Blockclique: scaling blockchains through transaction sharding in a multithreaded block graph

Decentralized crypto-currencies based on the blockchain architecture under-utilize available network bandwidth, making them unable to scale to thousands of transactions per second. We define the Blockclique architecture, that addresses this limitation by sharding transactions in a block graph with a fixed number of threads. The architecture allows the creation of intrinsically compatible blocks in parallel, where each block references one previous block of each thread. The consistency of the Blockclique protocol is formally established in presence of attackers. An experimental evaluation of the architecture's performance in large realistic networks demonstrates an efficient use of available bandwidth and a throughput of thousands of transactions per second.

Designing large arrays of interacting spin-torque nano-oscillators for microwave information processing

Arrays of spin-torque nano-oscillators are promising for broadband microwave signal detection and processing, as well as for neuromorphic computing. In many of these applications, the oscillators should be engineered to have equally-spaced frequencies and equal sensitivity to microwave inputs. Here we design spin-torque nano-oscillator arrays with these rules and estimate their optimum size for a given sensitivity, as well as the frequency range that they cover. For this purpose, we explore analytically and numerically conditions to obtain vortex spin-torque nano-oscillators with equally-spaced gyrotropic oscillation frequencies and having all similar synchronization bandwidths to input microwave signals. We show that arrays of hundreds of oscillators covering ranges of several hundred MHz can be built taking into account nanofabrication constraints.

Synchronization Detection in Networks of Coupled Oscillators for Pattern Recognition

Coupled oscillator-based networks are an attractive approach for implementing hardware neural networks based on emerging nanotechnologies. However, the readout of the state of a coupled oscillator network is a difficult challenge in hardware implementations, as it necessitates complex signal processing to evaluate the degree of synchronization between oscillators, possibly more complicated than the coupled oscillator network itself. In this work, we focus on a coupled oscillator network particularly adapted to emerging technologies, and evaluate two schemes for reading synchronization patterns that can be readily implemented with basic CMOS circuits. Through simulation of a simple generic coupled oscillator network, we compare the operation of these readout techniques with a previously proposed full statistics evaluation scheme. Our approaches provide results nearly identical to the mathematical method, but also show better resilience to moderate noise, which is a major concern for hardware implementations. These results open the door to widespread realization of hardware coupled oscillator-based neural systems.
