Frames and outer frames for Hilbert C^*-modules

The goal of the present paper is to extend the theory of frames for countably generated Hilbert $C^*$ -modules over arbitrary $C^*$ -algebras. In investigating the non-unital case we introduce the concept of outer frame as a sequence in the multiplier module $M(X)$ that has the standard frame property when applied to elements of the ambient module $X$ . Given a Hilbert $\A$-module $X$ , we prove that there is a bijective correspondence of the set of all adjointable surjections from the generalized Hilbert space $\ell^2(\A)$ to $X$ and the set consisting of all both frames and outer frames for $X$ . Building on a unified approach to frames and outer frames we then obtain new results on dual frames, frame perturbations, tight approximations of frames and finite extensions of Bessel sequences.

Finite extensions of Bessel sequences

The paper studies finite extensions of Bessel sequences in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. We provide a characterization of Bessel sequences that can be extended to frames by adding finitely many vectors. We also characterize frames that can be converted to Parseval frames by finite-dimensional perturbations. Finally, some results on excesses of frames and near-Riesz bases are derived.

On excesses of frames

We show that any two frames in a separable Hilbert space that are dual to each other have the same excess. Some new relations for the analysis resp. synthesis operators of dual frames are also derived. We then prove that pseudo-dual frames and, in particular, approximately dual frames have the same excess. We also discuss various results on frames in which excesses of frames play an important role.
