Nucleon Transversity and Hyperon Polarization

We calculate the transverse polarizations of the produced hyperons in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of unpolarized lepton beam on transversely polarized nucleon, since these polarizations provide a potential method for extracting the transversity distribution h1(x) of the nucleon. In this calculation we use the SU(6) wavefunctions of the octet baryons and the spectator model for the distribution functions of nucleons and the fragmentation functions of hyperons. We find that that H1(z) of the Sigma hyperons are much larger than that of the Lambda hyperon. Therefore, when one tries to extract the transversity distribution h1(x) from the hyperon polarizations, measuring the polarizations of the Sigma hyperons is more efficient than Lambda.

Transverse Spin Polarization of $τ^-$ in ${\bar{B}}^0\rightarrow D^{+} τ^- {\barν}$ and Charged Higgs Boson

The spin of the $τ$ lepton in the semiletonic process ${\bar{B}}^0\rightarrow D^{+} τ^- {\barν}$ can be polarized in the direction which is normal to the reaction plane, if the charged Higgs boson exists and its coupling to quarks has a complex phase. We calculate this transverse polarization of the $τ$ lepton by using the experimentally measured $B$ to $D$ transition form factors.

A New Picture for the Formation and Decay of the Exotic $XY \! Z$ Mesons

We present a new dynamical picture that identifies the formation of the exotic $\bar c c$-containing states $XY \! Z$ with the confinement-induced hadronization of a rapidly separating pair of a compact diquark and antidiquark. This picture combines the advantages of diquark-based models, which can accommodate much of the known $XY \! Z$ spectrum, with the experimental fact that such states are both relatively narrow and are produced promptly. It also naturally explains the preference of some of the exotic states to decay to $ψ(2S)$, rather than $J/ψ$, in terms of a simple wave-function overlap effect.

Disentangling Higgs-Top Couplings in Associated Production

In the presence of CP violation, the Higgs-top coupling may have both scalar and pseudoscalar components, $κ_t$ and ${\tilde κ_t}$, which are bounded indirectly but only weakly by the present experimental constraints on the Higgs-gluon-gluon and Higgs-$γ$-$γ$ couplings, whereas upper limits on electric dipole moments provide strong additional indirect constraints on ${\tilde κ_t}$, if the Higgs-electron coupling is similar to that in the Standard Model and there are no cancellations with other contributions. We discuss methods to measure directly the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs-top couplings by measurements of Higgs production in association with ${\bar t} t$, single $t$ and single ${\bar t}$ at the LHC. Measurements of the total cross sections are very sensitive to variations in the Higgs-top couplings that are consistent with the present indirect constraints, as are invariant mass distributions in ${\bar t} t H$, $tH$ and ${\bar t} H$ final states. We also investigate the additional information on $κ_t$ and ${\tilde κ_t}$ that could be obtained from measurements of the longitudinal and transverse $t$ polarization in the different associated production channels, and the ${\bar t} t$ spin correlation in ${\bar t} t H$ events.

The concept of phenomenological light-front wave functions -- Regge improved diquark model predictions

We introduce a classification scheme for parton distribution models and we model generalized parton distributions (GPDs), their form factors, and parton distribution functions (PDFs), integrated and unintegrated ones, in terms of unintegrated double distributions that are obtained from the parton number conserved overlap of effective light-front wave functions. For a so-called "spherical" model we present general expressions for all twist-two related non-perturbative quantities in terms of one effective light-front wave function, including chiral-odd GPDs. We also discuss the Regge improvement of such quark models from the $s$-channel point of view and study the relations between zero-skewness GPDs and unintegrated PDFs on a more general ground. Finally, we provide a few phenomenological applications that emphasize the role of orbital angular momenta.

Single-Spin Asymmetries in Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering and Drell-Yan Processes

We examine in detail the diagrammatic mechanisms which provide the change of sign between the single transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and in the Drell-Yan process (DY). This asymmetry is known to arise due to the transverse spin dependence of the target proton combined with a T-odd complex phase. Using the discrete symmetry properties of transverse spinors, we show that the required complex phase originates in the denominators of rescattering diagrams and their respective cuts. For simplicity, we work in a model where the proton consists of a valence quark and a scalar diquark. We then show that the phases generated in SIDIS and in DY originate from distinctly different cuts in the amplitudes, which at first appears to obscure the relationship between the single-spin asymmetries in the two processes. Nevertheless, further analysis demonstrates that the contributions of these cuts are identical in the leading-twist Bjorken kinematics considered, resulting in the standard sign-flip relation between the Sivers functions in SIDIS and DY. Physically, this fundamental, but yet untested, prediction occurs because the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan reaction is modified by the initial-state "lensing" interactions of the annihilating antiquark, in contrast to the final-state lensing which produces the Sivers effect in deep inelastic scattering.

A Fast Track towards the `Higgs' Spin and Parity

The LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS have discovered a new boson that resembles the long-sought Higgs boson: it cannot have spin one, and has couplings to other particles that increase with their masses, but the spin and parity remain to be determined. We show here that the `Higgs' + gauge boson invariant-mass distribution in `Higgs'-strahlung events at the Tevatron or the LHC would be very different under the J^P = 0+, 0- and 2+ hypotheses, and could provide a fast-track indicator of the `Higgs' spin and parity. Our analysis is based on simulations of the experimental event selections and cuts using PYTHIA and Delphes, and incorporates statistical samples of `toy' experiments.

Distinguishing `Higgs' Spin Hypotheses using gamma gamma and WW* Decays

The new particle X recently discovered by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations in searches for the Higgs boson has been observed to decay into gamma gamma, ZZ* and WW*, but its spin and parity, J^P, remain a mystery, with J^P = 0^+ and 2^+ being open possibilities. We use PYTHIA and Delphes to simulate an analysis of the angular distribution of gg to X to gamma gamma decays in a full 2012 data set, including realistic background levels. We show that this angular distribution should provide strong discrimination between the possibilities of spin zero and spin two with graviton-like couplings: ~ 3 sigma if a conservative symmetric interpretation of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) test statistic is used, and ~ 6 sigma if a less conservative asymmetric interpretation is used. The WW and ZZ couplings of the Standard Model Higgs boson and of a 2^+ particle with graviton-like couplings are both expected to exhibit custodial symmetry. We simulate the present ATLAS and CMS search strategies for X to WW* using PYTHIA and Delphes, and show that their efficiencies in the case of a spin-two particle with graviton-like couplings are a factor ~ 1.9 smaller than in the spin-zero case. On the other hand, the ratio of X_{2^+} to WW* and ZZ* branching ratios is larger than that in the 0^+ case by a factor ~ 1.3. We find that the current ATLAS and CMS results for X to WW* and X to ZZ* decays are compatible with custodial symmetry under both the spin-zero and -two hypotheses, and that the data expected to become available during 2012 are unlikely to discriminate significantly between these possibilities.

Does the `Higgs' have Spin Zero?

The Higgs boson is predicted to have spin zero. The ATLAS and CMS experiments have recently reported of an excess of events with mass ~ 125 GeV that has some of the characteristics expected for a Higgs boson. We address the questions whether there is already any evidence that this excess has spin zero, and how this possibility could be confirmed in the near future. The excess observed in the gamma gamma final state could not have spin one, leaving zero and two as open possibilities. We calculate the angular distribution of gamma gamma pairs from the decays of a spin-two boson produced in gluon-gluon collisions, showing that is unique and distinct from the spin-zero case. We also calculate the distributions for lepton pairs that would be produced in the W W* decays of a spin-two boson, which are very different from those in Higgs decays, and note that the kinematics of the event selection used to produce the excess observed in the W W* final state have reduced efficiency for spin two.

Integrated and unintegrated PDFs and GPDs from effective two-body light-cone wave functions

We suggest a classification scheme for parton distribution models, clarify the geometrical origin of unintegrated parton distribution relations, which were observed in various models, present new model relations, and provide for a so-called "spherical" model the analogous constraints for generalized parton distributions. Our findings suggest that various classes of uPDF and GPD models can be obtained from effective two-body light-cone wave functions.

GPD and PDF modeling in terms of effective light-cone wave functions

We employ models from effective two-body light-cone wave functions (LCWFs) to provide a link between generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs). Since we utilize the underlying Lorentz symmetry, GPDs can be entirely obtained from the parton number conserved LCWF overlaps. This also allows us to derive model constraints among GPDs. We illustrate that transversity distributions may be rather sizeable.

Spin Correlations of Lambda anti-Lambda Pairs as a Probe of Quark-Antiquark Pair Production

The polarizations of Lambda and anti-Lambda are thought to retain memories of the spins of their parent s quarks and antiquarks, and are readily measurable via the angular distributions of their daughter protons and antiprotons. Correlations between the spins of Lambda and anti-Lambda produced at low relative momenta may therefore be used to probe the spin states of s anti-s pairs produced during hadronization. We consider the possibilities that they are produced in a 3P_0 state, as might result from fluctuations in the magnitude of <anti-s s>, a 1S_0 state, as might result from chiral fluctuations, or a 3S_1 or other spin state, as might result from production by a quark-antiquark or gluon pair. We provide templates for the p anti-p angular correlations that would be expected in each of these cases, and discuss how they might be used to distinguish s anti-s production mechanisms in pp and heavy-ion collisions.

Higher-twist contributions to large pT hadron production in hadronic collisions

The scaling behavior of large-pT hadron production in hadronic collisions is investigated. A significant deviation from the NLO QCD predictions is reported, especially at high values of xT=2pT/sqrt(s). In contrast, the prompt photon and jet production data prove in agreement with leading-twist expectations. These results are interpreted as coming from a non-negligible contribution of higher-twist processes, where the hadron is produced directly in the hard subprocess. Predictions for scaling exponents at RHIC are successfully compared to PHENIX preliminary measurements. We suggest to trigger on isolated large-pT hadron production to enhance higher-twist processes, and point that the use of isolated hadrons as a signal for new physics at colliders can be affected by the presence of direct hadron production processes.

Higher-Twist Dynamics in Large Transverse Momentum Hadron Production

A scaling law analysis of the world data on inclusive large-pT hadron production in hadronic collisions is carried out. A significant deviation from leading-twist perturbative QCD predictions at next-to-leading order is reported. The observed discrepancy is largest at high values of xT=2pT/sqrt(s). In contrast, the production of prompt photons and jets exhibits the scaling behavior which is close to the conformal limit, in agreement with the leading-twist expectation. These results bring evidence for a non-negligible contribution of higher-twist processes in large-pT hadron production in hadronic collisions, where the hadron is produced directly in the hard subprocess rather than by gluon or quark jet fragmentation. Predictions for scaling exponents at RHIC and LHC are given, and it is suggested to trigger the isolated large-pT hadron production to enhance higher-twist processes.

Light-Cone Wavefunction Representations of Sivers and Boer-Mulders Distribution Functions

We find the light-cone wavefunction representations of the Sivers and Boer-Mulders distribution functions. A necessary condition for the existence of these representations is that the light-cone wavefunctions have complex phases. We induce the complex phases by incorporating the final-state interactions into the light-cone wavefunctions. For the scalar and axial-vector diquark models for nucleon, we calculate explicitly the Sivers and Boer-Mulders distribution functions from the light-cone wavefunction representations. We obtain the results that the Sivers distribution function has the opposite signs with the factor 3 difference in magnitude for the two models, whereas the Boer-Mulders distribution function has the same sign and magnitude. We can understand these results from the properties of the light-cone wavefunction representations of the Sivers and Boer-Mulders distribution functions.

Decay Rate Ratios of Upsilon(5S) to B Bbar Reactions

We calculate the decay rate ratios for OZI allowed decays of Upsilon(5S) to two B mesons by using the decay amplitudes which incorporate the wave function of the Upsilon(5S) state. We obtain the results that the branching ratio of the Upsilon(5S) decay to Bs* Bs*bar is much larger than the branching ratio to Bs Bs*bar or Bsbar Bs*, in good agreement with recent experimental results of CLEO and BELLE. This agreement with the experimental results is made possible since the nodes of the Upsilon(5S) radial wave function induce the nodes of the decay amplitude. We find that the results for the Upsilon(5S) decays to Bu(*) Bu(*)bar or Bd(*) Bd(*)bar pairs are dependent on the parameter values used for the potential between heavy quarks.

Decay Constants of $D_{sJ}^*$(2317) and $D_{sJ}$(2460)

The resonances $D_{sJ}^*$(2317) and $D_{sJ}$(2460) which are considered to be the $(0^+,1^+)$ doublet composed of charm and strange quarks have been discovered recently. Using the method of Rosner which is based on the factorization hypothesis, we calculate the lower bounds of the decay constants of these states from the branching ratios of $B\to D D_{sJ}$ measured by Belle and Babar. Our result shows that the decay constant of $D_{sJ}$(2460) is about twice that of $D_{sJ}^*$(2317) on the contrary to the naive expectation of the heavy quark symmetry which gives their equality. We show that this big deviation originates from the large internal motion of quarks inside these $P$-wave states and that our result is in good accord with the relativistic quark model calculation.

Initial-State Interactions in the Unpolarized Drell-Yan Process

We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the $\cos 2 ϕ$ distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production $p p$ and $ p \bar p \to \ell^+ \ell^- X$, without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a product of chiral-odd distributions $h_1^\perp(x_1,\bm{p}_\perp^2)\times \bar h_1^\perp(x_2,\bm{k}_\perp^2) $, where the quark-transversity function $h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$ is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone momentum distribution of transversely polarized quarks in an {\it unpolarized} proton. We compute this (naive) $T$-odd and chiral-odd distribution function and the resulting $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry explicitly in a quark-scalar diquark model for the proton with initial-state gluon interaction. In this model the function $h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$ equals the $T$-odd (chiral-even) Sivers effect function $f^\perp_{1T}(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$. This suggests that the single-spin asymmetries in the SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process are closely related to the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry of the unpolarized Drell-Yan process, since all can arise from the same underlying mechanism. This provides new insight regarding the role of quark and gluon orbital angular momentum as well as that of initial- and final-state gluon exchange interactions in hard QCD processes.

Decay Constant Ratios $f_{η_c}/f_{J/ψ}$ and $f_{η_b}/f_Υ$

We calculate the decay constant ratios $f_{η_c}/f_{J/ψ}$ and $f_{η_b}/f_Υ$. In the calculation we take into account the mock meson structures of the mesons, as well as the difference of the wave functions at origin of the vector and pseudoscalar mesons studied by Ahmady and Mendel. We find that the different spin structures of the mesons much affect the ratios. We incorporate our results in the prediction of the branching ratios of $B\to K η_c$.

Average Kinetic Energy of Heavy Quark in Semileptonic B Decay

Within the ACCMM model the average kinetic energy of heavy quark in a heavy-light meson is calculated as $\langle {\bf p}^2 \rangle = {3 \over 2} {p_{_F}}^2$, solely from the fact that the Gaussian momentum probability distribution has been taken in the ACCMM model. Therefore, the Fermi momentum parameter $p_{_F}$ of the ACCMM model is not a truly free parameter, but is closely related to the average kinetic energy of heavy quark, which is theoretically calculable in principle. In this context, we determine $p_{_F}$ by comparing the theoretical prediction of the ACCMM model with the model independent lepton energy spectrum of $B \rightarrow e νX$ from the recent CLEO analysis, and find that $p_{_F}=0.54~\pm~^{0.16}_{0.15}$ GeV. We also calculate $p_{_F}$ in the relativistic quark model by applying the quantum mechanical variational method, and obtained $p_{_F}=0.5\sim 0.6$ GeV. We show the correspondences between the relativistic quark model and the heavy quark effective theory. We then clarify the importance of the value of $p_{_F}$ in the determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$.

Particle dynamics in a class of 2-dimensional gravity theories

We provide a method to determine the motion of a classical massive particle in a background geometry of 2-dimensional gravity theories, for which the Birkhoff theorem holds. In particular, we get the particle trajectory in a continuous class of 2-dimensional dilaton gravity theories that includes the Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) model, the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model, and the $d$-dimensional $s$-wave Einstein gravity. The explicit trajectory expressions for these theories are given along with the discussions on the results.

Dependence of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ on Fermi momentum $p_{_F}$ in ACCMM model

The Gaussian width of Fermi momentum, $p_{_F}$, is the most important parameter of the ACCMM model, and its value is essential in the determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ because the experimental analysis is allowed only at the end-point region of inclusive semileptonic $B$-decay spectrum. We extract the value of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ as a function of $p_{_F}$. We also calculate the parameter $p_{_F}$ in the relativistic quark model using the variational method, and obtain $p_{_F} = 0.54$ GeV which is much larger than the commonly used value, $\sim 0.3$ GeV, in experimental analyses. When we use $p_{_F} = 0.5$ GeV instead of 0.3 GeV, the value of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ from ACCMM model is increased by a factor 1.81, and can give a good agreement with Isgur {\it et al.} model.

Ratios of $B$ and $D$ Meson Decay Constants in Improved Mock Meson Model

We calculate the ratio $f_{B_s}/f_{B_d}$ by following the Oakes' method which is based on chiral symmetry breaking, but we improve his calculation by performing the calculation of the factor $<0|{\bar{b}}γ_5s|B_s>$/$<0|{\bar{b}}γ_5d|B_d>$ in the mock meson model. In this calculation we improved the mock meson model by using the value of the parameter $β$ which is obtained by the variational method in the relativistic quark model. We also calculate $f_{D_s}/f_{D_d}$, and then $(f_{B_s}/f_{B_d})\, /\, (f_{D_s}/f_{D_d})$. In this method we also obtain the ratio $f_{B_s}/f_{D_s}$ and $f_{B_d}/f_{D_d}$ which are important for the knowledge of CP violation and $B$-$\bar{B}$ mixing.
