Physics at a 100 TeV pp collider: Standard Model processes

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

Parton-shower effects on Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion in association with three jets

We present an implementation of Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion in association with three jets at hadron colliders in the POWHEG-BOX, a framework for the matching of NLO-QCD calculations with parton-shower programs. Our work provides the means to precisely describe the properties of extra jet activity in vector-boson fusion reactions that are used for the suppression of QCD backgrounds by central jet veto techniques. For a representative setup at the CERN LHC we verify that uncertainties related to parton-shower effects are mild for distributions related to the third jet, in contrast to what has been observed in calculations based on vector-boson fusion induced Higgs production in association with two jets.

Release Note - VBFNLO 2.7.0

VBFNLO is a flexible parton level Monte Carlo program for the simulation of vector boson fusion (VBF), double and triple vector boson (plus jet) production as well as QCD-induced single and double vector boson production plus two jets in hadronic collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant. Furthermore, Higgs boson plus two jet production via gluon fusion at the one-loop level is included. This note briefly describes the main additional features and processes that have been added in the new release -- VBFNLO Version 2.7.0. At NLO QCD several new processes are available. These are $W^\pmγ$ and $HH$ production in VBF, the QCD-induced single and double vector boson plus two jets processes $W^\pm jj$, $W^\pm Zjj$, $W^\pmγjj$, same-sign $W^\pm W^\pm jj$, and the Higgs-strahlung process $W^\pm H$ (plus jet) production. Anomalous couplings are now available for all VBF, diboson and triboson (plus jet) processes including the new VBF $W^\pmγjj$ implementation, as well as in the Higgs-strahlung (plus jet) process. Semi-leptonic decay modes are supported for the following diboson, triboson and VBF processes: $VV$, $VVV$, $VVγ$ production and $VV$ production via VBF, where $V$ denotes a massive gauge boson, i.e. $W^\pm$ or $Z$. Additionally, the VBF-Higgs production process with decay into $WW$ or $ZZ$ supports semi-leptonic decays of the gauge bosons. All these semi-leptonic processes contain the possibility to include anomalous gauge boson couplings.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to W+W+jj and W-W-jj production via weak-boson fusion

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for e+ nu_e mu+ nu_mu jj and e- nubar_e mu- nubar_mu jj production via weak boson fusion at a hadron collider in the form of a fully-flexible parton-level Monte Carlo program, which allows for the calculation of experimentally accessible observables within realistic selection cuts. The QCD corrections to the integrated cross sections are found to be modest, while the shapes of some kinematical distributions change appreciably compared to leading order. The residual scale uncertainties of the next-to-leading order results are at the few-percent level.

Release Note -- Vbfnlo-2.6.0

Vbfnlo is a flexible parton level Monte Carlo program for the simulation of vector boson fusion (VBF), double and triple vector boson (plus jet) production in hadronic collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant, as well as Higgs boson plus two jet production via gluon fusion at the one-loop level. This note briefly describes the main additional features and processes that have been added in the new release -- Vbfnlo Version 2.6.0. At NLO QCD diboson production (Wγ, WZ, ZZ, Zγand γγ), same-sign W pair production via vector boson fusion and the process Wγγj have been implemented (for which one-loop tensor integrals up to six-point functions are included). In addition, gluon induced diboson production can be studied separately at the leading order (one-loop) level. The diboson processes WW, WZ and Wγcan be run with anomalous gauge boson couplings, and anomalous couplings between a Higgs and a pair of gauge bosons is included in WW, ZZ, Zγand γγdiboson production. The code has also been extended to include anomalous gauge boson couplings for single vector boson production via VBF, and a spin-2 model has been implemented for diboson pair production via vector boson fusion.

Wγγproduction with leptonic decays at NLO QCD

The computation of the NLO-QCD corrections to the cross sections for W γγproduction in hadronic collisions is presented. We consider the case of real photons in the final state, but include full leptonic decays of the W. Numerical results for the LHC and the Tevatron are obtained through a parton level Monte Carlo based on the structure of the VBFNLO program, allowing an easy implementation of general cuts and distributions. We show the dependence on scale variations of the integrated cross sections and provide evidence of the fact that NLO QCD corrections strongly modify the LO predictions for observables at the LHC both in magnitude and in shape.

Zγγproduction with leptonic decays and triple photon production at NLO QCD

We present a calculation of the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to the production of a Z boson in association with two photons and to triple photon production at hadron colliders. All final-state photons are taken as real. For the Z boson, we consider the decays both into charged leptons and into neutrinos including all off-shell effects. Numerical results are obtained via a Monte Carlo program based on the structure of the VBFNLO program package. This allows us to implement general cuts and distributions of the final-state particles. We find that the NLO QCD corrections are sizable and significantly exceed the expectations from a scale variation of the leading-order result. In addition, differential distributions of important observables change considerably. The prediction of two-photon-associated Z production with Z decays into neutrinos from the charged-lepton rate works well, once we use an additional cut on the invariant mass of the charged-lepton pair.

NLO QCD corrections to $W^\pm Zγ$ production with leptonic decays

We present a computation of the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to W^\pm Z γproduction at the Large Hadron Collider. The photon is considered as real, and we include full leptonic decays for the W and Z bosons. Based on the structure of the VBFNLO program package, we obtain numerical results through a fully flexible Monte Carlo program, which allows to implement general cuts and distributions of the final-state particles. The NLO QCD corrections are sizable and strongly exceed the theory error obtained by a scale variation of the leading-order result. Also, the shapes of relevant observables are significantly altered.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

Weak boson scattering at the Large Hadron Collider

Weak boson scattering processes provide particularly promising means for gaining insight into the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking at hadron colliders. Being very sensitive to interactions in the weak gauge boson sector, they will help to distinguish the Standard Model from various new physics scenarios such as extra-dimensional Higgsless models. To unambiguously identify signatures of new physics, precise predictions for experimentally accessible observables within realistic selection cuts are crucial, including next-to-leading order QCD corrections. Here, we review how flexible Monte-Carlo methods can be employed for precision analyses of weak boson scattering reactions within the Standard Model and beyond.

NLO QCD corrections to W+W- gamma and Z Z gamma production with leptonic decays

The computation of the NLO QCD corrections to the cross sections for W+W- gamma and ZZgamma production in hadronic collisions is presented. We consider the case of a real photon in the final state, but include full leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons. Numerical results for the LHC and the Tevatron are obtained through a fully flexible parton level Monte Carlo based on the structure of the VBFNLO program, allowing an easy implementation of arbitrary cuts and distributions. We show the dependence on scale variations of the integrated cross sections and provide evidence that NLO QCD corrections strongly modify the LO predictions for observables at the LHC both in magnitude and in shape.

Higgs plus two jet production via gluon fusion as a signal at the CERN LHC

Higgs boson production in association with two tagging jets will be mediated by electroweak vector boson fusion and by gluon fusion processes at the CERN LHC. The characteristic distributions for the gluon fusion process are analyzed for the $H\to W^+W^-$ signal at $m_H=160$ GeV, with subsequent leptonic decay of the $W$-pair. The dominant backgrounds from top-quark pair production, $WWjj$ production and vector boson fusion processes can be suppressed to a level of $S/B\approx 1/4$, yielding a highly significant gluon fusion signal with 30 fb$^{-1}$. Analysis of the azimuthal angle correlations of the two jets provides for a direct measurement of the CP-nature of the $Htt$ Yukawa coupling which is responsible for the effective $Hgg$ vertex.

Gluon-fusion contributions to Higgs plus two-jet production

Real emission corrections to Higgs production via gluon fusion, at order alpha_s^4, lead to a Higgs plus two-jet final state. We present the calculation of these scattering amplitudes, as induced by top-quark triangle-, box- and pentagon-loop diagrams. These diagrams are evaluated analytically for arbitrary top mass m_t. We study the renormalization and factorization scale-dependence of the resulting H + 2 jet cross section, and discuss phenomenologically important distributions at the LHC. The gluon fusion results are compared to expectations for weak-boson fusion cross sections.

A method for identifying H -> tau tau -> e mu pTmiss at the CERN LHC

Weak boson fusion promises to be a copious source of intermediate mass Higgs bosons at the LHC. The additional very energetic forward jets in these events provide for powerful background suppression tools. We analyze the subsequent H -> tau tau -> e mu pTmiss decay for Higgs boson masses in the 100-150 GeV range. A parton level analysis of the dominant backgrounds demonstrates that this channel allows the observation of H -> tau tau in a low-background environment, yielding a significant Higgs boson signal with an integrated luminosity of order 60 fb^-1 or less, over most of the mass range. We also restate a No-Lose Theorem for observation of at least one of the CP-even neutral Higgs bosons in the MSSM, which requires an integrated luminosity of only 40 fb^-1.

H-->WW as the discovery mode for a light Higgs boson

The production cross section for a m_H=115 GeV, SM Higgs boson in weak boson fusion at the LHC is sizable. However, the branching fraction for H-->WW is expected to be relatively small. The signal, with its two forward jets, is sufficiently different from the main backgrounds that a signal to background ratio of better than 1:1 can nevertheless be obtained, with large enough rate to allow for a 5 sigma signal with 35 fb^{-1} of data. The H-->WW signal in weak boson fusion may thus prove to be the discovery mode for the Higgs boson at the LHC.

Drell-Yan plus missing energy as a signal for extra dimensions

We explore the search sensitivity for signals of large extra dimensions at hadron colliders via the Drell-Yan process pp -> l+ l- + E_T(miss) X (l = e,mu) where the missing transverse energy is the result of escaping Kaluza-Klein gravitons. We find that one is able to place exclusion limits on the gravity scale up to 560 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, and to 4.0 (3.3) TeV at the CERN LHC, for n = 3 (4) extra dimensions.

NLO QCD predictions for internal jet shapes in DIS at HERA

The transverse momentum flow inside jets is a sensitive measure of internal jet structure. For the current jets in deep inelastic scattering this jet shape measure is determined at order alpha_s^2, i.e. with up to three partons inside a single jet. The scale dependence of jet shapes in various jet algorithms is discussed. Results agree well with recent measurements by the ZEUS Collaboration, without introducing the hadronization parameter R_sep.

Observing H -> W*W* -> e mu pT(miss) in weak boson fusion with dual forward jet tagging at the LHC

Weak boson fusion promises to be a copious source of intermediate mass Standard Model Higgs bosons at the LHC. The additional very energetic forward jets in these events provide for powerful background suppression tools. We analyze the H -> W^(*)W^(*) -> e mu pTmiss decay mode for a Higgs boson mass in the 130-200 GeV range. A parton level analysis of the dominant backgrounds (production of W pairs, tt~ and Z -> tau tau in association with jets) demonstrates that this channel allows the observation of H -> W^(*)W^(*) in a virtually background-free environment, yielding a significant Higgs boson signal with an integrated luminosity of 5 fb^-1 or less. Weak boson fusion achieves a much better signal to background ratio than inclusive H -> e mu pTmiss and is therefore the most promising search channel in the 130-200 GeV mass range.

Searching for H --> tau tau in weak boson fusion at the LHC

Weak boson fusion is a copious source of intermediate mass Higgs bosons at the LHC. The additional very energetic forward jets in these events provide for powerful background suppression tools. We analyze the $H \to ττ$ decay mode for the Standard Model Higgs boson. A parton level analysis of the dominant physics backgrounds (mainly $Z \to ττ$ and Drell-Yan production of $τ$'s) and of reducible backgrounds (from $W+$ jet and $b\bar{b}$ production in association with two jets and subsequent leptonic decays) demonstrates that this channel allows the observation of $H \to ττ$ in a low background environment, yielding a significant Higgs signal with an integrated luminosity of about 30 fb$^{-1}$. The weak boson fusion process thus allows direct measurement of the $Hττ$ coupling.

Unitarization of Gluon Exchange Amplitudes and Rapidity Gaps at the Tevatron

Rapidity gaps between two hard jets at the Tevatron have been interpreted as being due to the exchange of two gluons which are in an overall color-singlet state. We show that this simple picture involves unitarity violating amplitudes. Unitarizing the gluon exchange amplitude leads to qualitatively different predictions for the fraction of $t$-channel color singlet exchange events in forward $qq$, $qg$ or $gg$ scattering, which better fit Tevatron data.

Contact Interactions and high-Q2 events in e^+ p collisions at HERA

We consider $e e q q$ contact interactions as a possible origin of an excess of events above Standard Model predictions in $e^+ p \to e^+ jet$ at high $Q^2$ observed by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA. The HERA data prefer chirality RL or LR contact terms and atomic physics parity violation measurements severely limit parity-odd contact terms. With equal left-right and right-left chirality interactions at an effective scale of order 3 TeV we are able to reproduce the main features of the HERA data and still be consistent with Drell-Yan pair production at the Tevatron and hadron production at LEP 2 and TRISTAN.

Searching for a heavy Higgs boson via the H --> l nu jj decay mode at the CERN LHC

The discovery of a heavy Higgs boson with mass up to m_H = 1 TeV at the CERN LHC is possible in the H--> W^+W^- --> l nu jj decay mode. The weak boson scattering signal and backgrounds from t\bar tjj and from W+jets production are analyzed with parton level Monte Carlo programs which are built on full tree level amplitudes for all subprocesses. The use of double jet tagging and the reconstruction of the W invariant mass reduce the combined backgrounds to the same level as the Higgs signal. A central mini-jet veto, which distinguishes the different gluon radiation patterns of the hard processes, further improves the signal to background ratio to about 2.5:1, with a signal cross section of 1 fb. The jet energy asymmetry of the W --> jj decay will give a clear signature of the longitudinal polarization of the W's in the final event sample.

Searching for H -> gamma gamma in weak boson fusion at the LHC

Weak boson fusion is a copious source of intermediate mass Higgs bosons at the LHC, with a rate sigma*B(H -> gamma gamma) of up to 9 fb. The additional very energetic forward jets in these events provide for a unique signature. A parton level analysis of the dominant backgrounds demonstrates that this channel allows the observation of H -> gamma gamma in a low background environment, with modest luminosity.

ANOMALOUS GAUGE BOSON INTERACTIONS

We discuss the direct measurement of the trilinear vector boson couplings in present and future collider experiments. The major goals of such experiments will be the confirmation of the Standard Model (SM) predictions and the search for signals of new physics. We review our current theoretical understanding of anomalous trilinear gauge boson self-interactions. If the energy scale of the new physics is $\sim 1$ TeV, these low energy anomalous couplings are expected to be no larger than ${\cal O}(10^{-2})$. Constraints from high precision measurements at LEP and low energy charged and neutral current processes are critically reviewed.

Finite Width Effects and Gauge Invariance in Radiative $W$ Production and Decay

The naive implementation of finite width effects in processes involving unstable particles can violate gauge invariance. For the example of radiative $W$ production and decay, $q\bar q' \to \ellνγ$, at tree level, it is demonstrated how gauge invariance is restored by including the imaginary part of triangle graphs in addition to resumming the imaginary contributions to the $W$ vacuum polarization. Monte Carlo results are presented for the Fermilab Tevatron.

Finding the Leptonic $WW$ Decay Mode of a Heavy Higgs Boson

We reanalyze the extraction of the heavy Higgs boson signal $H\rightarrow W^+W^-\rightarrow \bar\ellν,\ell\barν$ $(\ell=e\hbox{ or }μ)$ from the Standard Model background at hadron supercolliders, taking into account revised estimates of the top quark background. With new acceptance criteria the detection of the signal remains viable. Requiring a forward jet-tag, a central jet-veto, and a large relative transverse momentum of the two charged leptons yields $S/\sqrt B>6$ for one year of running at the SSC or LHC.
