Optimal Gaussian concentration bounds for stochastic chains of unbounded memory

We obtain optimal Gaussian concentration bounds (GCBs) for stochastic chains of unbounded memory (SCUMs) on countable alphabets. These stochastic processes are also known as "chains with complete connections" or "$g$-measures". We consider two different conditions on the kernel: (1) when the sum of its oscillations is less than one, or (2) when the sum of its variations is finite, i.e., belongs to $\ell^1(\mathbb{N})$. We also obtain explicit constants as functions of the parameters of the model. The proof is based on maximal coupling. Our conditions are optimal in the sense that we exhibit examples of SCUMs that do not have GCB and for which the sum of oscillations is strictly larger than one, or the variation belongs to $\ell^{1+ε}(\mathbb{N})$ for any $ε> 0$. These examples are based on the existence of phase transitions. We also extend the validity of GCB to a class of functions which can depend on infinitely many coordinates. We illustrate our results by three applications. First, we derive a Dvoretzky-Kiefer-Wolfowitz type inequality which gives a uniform control on the fluctuations of the empirical measure. Second, in the finite-alphabet case, we obtain an upper bound on the $\bar{d}$-distance between two stationary SCUMs and, as a by-product, we obtain new (explicit) bounds on the speed of Markovian approximation in $\bar{d}$. Third, we obtain exponential rate of convergence for Birkhoff sums of a certain class of observables.

Multi-block/multi-core SSOR preconditioner for the QCD quark solver for K computer

We study the algorithmic optimization and performance tuning of the Lattice QCD clover-fermion solver for the K computer. We implement the Lüscher's SAP preconditioner with sub-blocking in which the lattice block in a node is further divided to several sub-blocks to extract enough parallelism for the 8-core CPU SPARC64$^{\mathrm{TM}}$ VIIIfx of the K computer. To achieve a better convergence property we use the symmetric successive over-relaxation (SSOR) iteration with {\it locally-lexicographical} ordering for the sub-blocks in obtaining the block inverse. The SAP preconditioner is included in the single precision BiCGStab solver of the nested BiCGStab solver. The single precision part of the computational kernel are solely written with the SIMD oriented intrinsics to achieve the best performance of the \SPARC on the K computer. We benchmark the single precision BiCGStab solver on the three lattice sizes: $12^3\times 24$, $24^3\times 48$ and $48^3\times 96$, with fixing the local lattice size in a node at $6^3\times 12$. We observe an ideal weak-scaling performance from 16 nodes to 4096 nodes. The performance of a computational kernel exceeds 50% efficiency, and the single precision BiCGstab has $\sim26% susutained efficiency.

Ac Susceptibility and Static Magnetization Measurements of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at Small Magnetic Fields and Ultra Low Temperatures

The magnetic properties of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ at microkelvin temperatures (down to 170 $μ$K) and ultra small magnetic fields ($0.02\sim6.21$ mT) are investigated experimentally for the first time. The simultaneously measured ac susceptibility and static magnetization show neither evidence of the magnetic ordering, superconductivity down to the lowest temperatures nor conventional Landau Fermi-Liquid behavior. The results imply the magnetic transition temperature in undoped CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ is very close to absolute 0 K. The possibility for proximity of CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ to the quantum critical point without any doping is discussed.

Design and Performance of the Wide-Field X-Ray Monitor on Board the High-Energy Transient Explorer 2

The Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) is one of the scientific instruments carried on the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) satellite launched on 2000 October 9. HETE-2 is an international mission consisting of a small satellite dedicated to provide broad-band observations and accurate localizations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). A unique feature of this mission is its capability to determine and transmit GRB coordinates in almost real-time through the burst alert network. The WXM consists of three elements: four identical Xe-filled one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counters, two sets of one-dimensional coded apertures, and the main electronics. The WXM counters are sensitive to X-rays between 2 keV and 25 keV within a field-of-view of about 1.5 sr, with a total detector area of about 350 cm$^2$. The in-flight triggering and localization capability can produce a real-time GRB location of several to 30 arcmin accuracy, with a limiting sensitivity of $10^{-7}$ erg cm$^{-2}$. In this report, the details of the mechanical structure, electronics, on-board software, ground and in-flight calibration, and in-flight performance of the WXM are discussed.
