Chiral Anomaly and Classical Negative Magnetoresistance of Weyl Metals

We consider the classical magnetoresistance of a Weyl metal in which the electron Fermi surface possess nonzero fluxes of the Berry curvature. Such a system may exhibit large negative magnetoresistance with unusual anisotropy as a function of the angle between the electric and magnetic fields. In this case the system can support a new type of plasma waves. These phenomena are consequences of chiral anomaly in electron transport theory.

Response of strongly-interacting matter to magnetic field: some exact results

We derive some exact results concerning the response of strongly-interacting matter to external magnetic fields. Our results come from consideration of triangle anomalies in medium. First, we define an "axial magnetic susceptibility," then we examine its beahvior in two flavor QCD via response theory. In the chirally restored phase, this quantity is proportional to the fermion chemical potential, while in the phase of broken chiral symmetry it can be related, through triangle anomalies, to an in-medium amplitude for the neutral pion to decay to two photons. We confirm the latter result by calculation in a linear sigma model, where this amplitude is already known in the literature.

Domain walls of relative phase in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a system of two interpenetrating Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms in two different hyperfine spin states. We show that in the presence of a small coupling drive between the two spin levels, there exist domain walls across which the relative phase of the two condensates changes by 2pi. We give the physical interpretation of such walls. We show that the wall tension determines the force between certain pairs of vortices at large distances. We also show that the probability of the spontaneous decay of the domain wall is exponentially suppressed, both at finite and at zero temperature, and determine the exponents in the regime of small Rabi frequency. We briefly discuss how such domain walls could be created in future experiments.

From AdS/CFT correspondence to hydrodynamics

We compute the correlation functions of R-charge currents and components of the stress-energy tensor in the strongly coupled large-N finite-temperature N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, following a recently formulated Minkowskian AdS/CFT prescription. We observe that in the long-distance, low-frequency limit, such correlators have the form dictated by hydrodynamics. We deduce from the calculations the R-charge diffusion constant and the shear viscosity. The value for the latter is in agreement with an earlier calculation based on the Kubo formula and absorption by black branes.

Magnetic permeability of near-critical 3d abelian Higgs model and duality

The three-dimensional abelian Higgs model has been argued to be dual to a scalar field theory with a global U(1) symmetry. We show that this duality, together with the scaling and universality hypotheses, implies a scaling law for the magnetic permeablity chi_m near the line of second order phase transition: chi_m ~ t^nu, where t is the deviation from the critical line and nu ~ 0.67 is a critical exponent of the O(2) universality class. We also show that exactly on the critical lines, the dependence of magnetic induction on external magnetic field is quadratic, with a proportionality coefficient depending only on the gauge coupling. These predictions provide a way for testing the duality conjecture on the lattice in the Coulomb phase and at the phase transion.

Shear viscosity of strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma

Using the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence, we relate the shear viscosity ηof the finite-temperature N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in the large N, strong-coupling regime with the absorption cross section of low-energy gravitons by a near-extremal black three-brane. We show that in the limit of zero frequency this cross section coincides with the area of the horizon. From this result we find η=π/8 N^2T^3. We conjecture that for finite 't Hooft coupling (g_YM)^2N the shear viscosity is η=f((g_YM)^2N) N^2T^3, where f(x) is a monotonic function that decreases from O(x^{-2}\ln^{-1}(1/x)) at small x to π/8 when x\to\infty.

On finite-density QCD at large Nc

Deryagin, Grigoriev, and Rubakov (DGR) have shown that in finite-density QCD at infinite Nc the Fermi surface is unstable with respect to the formation of chiral waves with wavenumber twice the Fermi momentum, while the BCS instability is suppressed. We show here that at large, but finite Nc, the DGR instability only occurs in a finite window of chemical potentials from above Lambda_QCD to mu_critical = exp(gamma ln^2 Nc + O(ln Nc ln ln Nc))Lambda_QCD, where gamma = 0.02173. Our analysis shows that, at least in the perturbative regime, the instability occurs only at extremely large Nc, Nc > 1000 Nf, where Nf is the number of flavors. We conclude that the DGR instability is not likely to occur in QCD with three colors, where the ground state is expected to be a color superconductor. We speculate on possible structure of the ground state of finite-density QCD with very large Nc.

Magnetohydrodynamics of the Early Universe and the Evolution of Primordial Magnetic Fields

We show that the decaying magnetohydrodynamic turbulence leads to a more rapid growth of the correlation length of a primordial magnetic field than that caused by the expansion of the Universe. As an example, we consider the magnetic fields created during the electroweak phase transition. The expansion of the universe alone would yield a correlation length at the present epoch of 1 AU, whereas we find that the correlation length is likely of order 100 AU, and cannot possibly be longer than $10^4$ AU for non-helical fields. If the primordial field is strongly helical, the correlation length can be much larger, but we show that even in this case it cannot exceed 100 pc. All these estimates make it hard to believe that the observed galactic magnetic fields can result from the amplification of seed fields generated at the electroweak phase transition by the standard galactic dynamo.

Superconductivity by long-range color magnetic interaction in high-density quark matter

We argue that in quark matter at high densities, the color magnetic field remains unscreened and leads to the phenomenon of color superconductivity. Using the renormalization group near the Fermi surface, we find that the long-range nature of the magnetic interaction changes the asymptotic behavior of the gap $Δ$ at large chemical potential $μ$ qualitatively. We find $Δ\simμg^{-5}\exp(-{3π^2\over\sqrt{2}}{1\over g})$, where $g$ is the small gauge coupling. We discuss the possibility of breaking rotational symmetry by the formation of a condensate with nonzero angular momentum, as well as interesting parallels to some condensed matter systems with long-range forces.

Exponentiation of multiparticle amplitudes in scalar theories. II. Universality of the exponent

It has been shown recently that the amplitude of the creation of $n$ real scalar particles by one virtual boson near $n$--particle threshold exhibits exponential behavior at $n\sim1/λ$. We extend this result to the processes of multiparticle production at threshold by two virtual bosons. We find that both the tree--level amplitude and leading--$n$ loop corrections have the same exponential behavior, with the common exponent for $1\to n$ and $2\to n$ processes, for various kinematics. This result strongly indicates that the exponent for multiparticle amplitudes is independent of the initial state and that there may exist a semiclassical approach to the study of multiparticle production.

Instanton - like transitions at high energies in (1+1) dimensional scalar models. II.Classically allowed induced vacuum decay

We consider classical Minkowskian solutions to the field equation in the (1+1) dimensional scalar model with the exponential interaction that describe the unsuppressed false vacuum decay induced by $n$ initial particles. We find that there is a critical value of $n$ below which there are no such solutions, i.e., the vacuum decay is always suppressed. For the number of initial particles larger than this value the vacuum decay is unsuppressed at high enough energies.

Examples of Semiclassical Instanton-Like Scattering: Massless $ϕ^4$ and SU(2) Gauge Theories

Two-parameter sets of solutions to the classical field equations in the massless $ϕ^4$ model and SU(2) gauge theory are found, each solution presumably describing a multi-particle instanton-like transition at high energy. In the limit of small number of initial particles, the probability of the transition is suppressed by $\exp(-2S_0)$, where $S_0$ is the instanton action.
