Spectral analysis of Jacobi operators and asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials

We find and discuss asymptotic formulas for orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ with recurrence coefficients $a_{n}, b_{n}$. Our main goal is to consider the case where off-diagonal elements $a_{n}\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$. Formulas obtained are essentially different for relatively small and large diagonal elements $b_{n}$. Our analysis is intimately linked with spectral theory of Jacobi operators $J$ with coefficients $a_{n}, b_{n}$ and a study of the corresponding second order difference equations. We introduce the Jost solutions $f_{n}(z)$, $n\geq -1$, of such equations by a condition for $n\to\infty$ and suggest an Ansatz for them playing the role of the semiclassical Liouville-Green Ansatz for solutions of the Schrödinger equation. This allows us to study the spectral structure of Jacobi operators and their eigenfunctions $P_{n}(z)$ by traditional methods of spectral theory developed for differential equations. In particular, we express all coefficients in asymptotic formulas for $P_{n}(z)$ as $n \to\infty$ in terms of the Wronskian of the solutions $ P_{n} (z) $ and $ f_{n} (z)$. The formulas obtained for $P_{n}(z)$ generalize the asymptotic formulas for the classical Hermite polynomials where $a_{n}=\sqrt{(n+1)/2}$ and $b_{n}=0$.

Asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials. Singular critical case

Our goal is to find an asymptotic behavior as $n\to\infty$ of the orthogonal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ defined by Jacobi recurrence coefficients $a_{n}$ (off-diagonal terms) and $ b_{n}$ (diagonal terms). We consider the case $a_{n}\to\infty$, $b_{n}\to\infty$ in such a way that $\sum a_{n}^{-1}<\infty$ $($that is, the Carleman condition is violated$)$ and $γ_{n}:=2^{-1}b_{n} (a_{n}a_{n-1})^{-1/2} \to γ$ as $n\to\infty$. In the case $|γ| \neq 1$ asymptotic formulas for $P_{n}(z)$ are known; they depend crucially on the sign of $| γ|-1$. We study the critical case $| γ|=1$. The formulas obtained are qualitatively different in the cases $|γ_{n}| \to 1-0$ and $|γ_{n}| \to 1+0$. Another goal of the paper is to advocate an approach to a study of asymptotic behavior of $P_{n}(z)$ based on a close analogy of the Jacobi difference equations and differential equations of Schrödinger type.

Scattering theory for Laguerre operators

We study Jacobi operators $J_{p}$, $p> -1$, whose eigenfunctions are Laguerre polynomials. All operators $J_{p}$ have absolutely continuous simple spectra coinciding with the positive half-axis. This fact, however, by no means imply that the wave operators for the pairs $J_{p}$, $J_{q}$ where $p\neq q$ exist. Our goal is to show that, nevertheless, this is true and to find explicit expressions for these wave operators. We also study the time evolution of $(e^{-J t} f)_{n}$ as $|t|\to\infty$ for Jacobi operators $J$ whose eigenfunctions are different classical polynomials. For Laguerre polynomials, it turns out that the evolution $(e^{-J_{p} t} f)_{n}$ is concentrated in the region where $n\sim t^2$ instead of $n\sim |t |$ as happens in standard situations. As a by-product of our considerations, we obtain universal relations between amplitudes and phases in asymptotic formulas for general orthogonal polynomials.

Semiclassical asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials

Our goal is to find asymptotic formulas for orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ with the recurrence coefficients slowly stabilizing as $n\to\infty$. To that end, we develop spectral theory of Jacobi operators with long-range coefficients and study the corresponding second order difference equation. We suggest an Ansatz for its solutions playing the role of the semiclassical Green-Liouville Ansatz for solutions of the Schrödinger equation. The formulas obtained for $P_{n}(z)$ as $n\to\infty$ generalize the classical Bernstein-Szegö asymptotic formulas.

Hankel and Toeplitz operators: continuous and discrete representations

We find a relation guaranteeing that Hankel operators realized in the space of sequences $\ell^2 ({\Bbb Z}_{+}) $ and in the space of functions $L^2 ({\Bbb R}_{+}) $ are unitarily equivalent. This allows us to obtain exhaustive spectral results for two classes of unbounded Hankel operators in the space $\ell^2 ({\Bbb Z}_{+}) $ generalizing in different directions the classical Hilbert matrix. We also discuss a link between representations of Toeplitz operators in the spaces $\ell^2 ({\Bbb Z}_{+}) $ and $L^2 ({\Bbb R}_{+}) $.

Passage through a potential barrier and multiple wells

Consider the semiclassical limit, as the Planck constant $\hbar\ri 0$, of bound states of a one-dimensional quantum particle in multiple potential wells separated by barriers. We show that, for each eigenvalue of the Schrödinger operator, the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition is satisfied at least for one potential well. The proof of this result relies on a study of real wave functions in a neighborhood of a potential barrier. We show that, at least from one side, the barrier fixes the phase of wave functions in the same way as a potential barrier of infinite width. On the other hand, it turns out that for each well there exists an eigenvalue in a small neighborhood of every point satisfying the Bohr-Sommerfeld condition.

Quasi-Carleman operators and their spectral properties

The Carleman operator is defined as integral operator with kernel $(t+s)^{-1}$ in the space $L^2 ({\Bbb R}_{+}) $. This is the simplest example of a Hankel operator which can be explicitly diagonalized. Here we study a class of self-adjoint Hankel operators (we call them quasi-Carleman operators) generalizing the Carleman operator in various directions. We find explicit formulas for the total number of negative eigenvalues of quasi-Carleman operators and, in particular, necessary and sufficient conditions for their positivity. Our approach relies on the concepts of the sigma-function and of the quasi-diagonalization of Hankel operators introduced in the preceding paper of the author.

Quasi-diagonalization of Hankel operators

We show that all Hankel operators $H$ realized as integral operators with kernels $h(t+s)$ in $L^2 ({\Bbb R}_{+}) $ can be quasi-diagonalized as $H= {\sf L}^* Σ{\sf L} $. Here ${\sf L}$ is the Laplace transform, $Σ$ is the operator of multiplication by a function (distribution) $σ(λ)$, $λ\in {\Bbb R}$. We find a scale of spaces of test functions where ${\sf L} $ acts as an isomorphism. Then ${\sf L}^*$ is an isomorphism of the corresponding spaces of distributions. We show that $h= {\sf L}^* σ$ which yields a one-to-one correspondence between kernels $h(t)$ and sigma-functions $σ(λ)$ of Hankel operators. The sigma-function of a self-adjoint Hankel operator $H$ contains substantial information about its spectral properties. Thus we show that the operators $H$ and $Σ$ have the same numbers of positive and negatives eigenvalues. In particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for sign-definiteness of Hankel operators. These results are illustrated at examples of quasi-Carleman operators generalizing the classical Carleman operator with kernel $h(t)=t^{-1}$ in various directions. The concept of the sigma-function directly leads to a criterion (equivalent of course to the classical Nehari theorem) for boundedness of Hankel operators. Our construction also shows that every Hankel operator is unitarily equivalent by the Mellin transform to a pseudo-differential operator with amplitude which is a product of functions of one variable only (of $x\in{\Bbb R}$ and of its dual variable).

Criteria for Hankel operators to be sign-definite

We show that total multiplicities of negative and positive spectra of a self-adjoint Hankel operator $H$ with kernel $h(t)$ and of an operator of multiplication by some real function $s(x)$ coincide. In particular, $\pm H\geq 0$ if and only if $\pm s(x)\geq 0$. The kernel $h(t)$ and its "sign-function" $s(x)$ are related by an explicit formula. An expression of $h(t)$ in terms of $s(x)$ leads to an exponential representation of $h(t)$. Our approach directly applies to various classes of Hankel operators. In particular, for Hankel operators of finite rank, we find an explicit formula for the total multiplicity of their negative and positive spectra.

Diagonalizations of two classes of unbounded Hankel operators

We show that every Hankel operator $H$ is unitarily equivalent to a pseudo-differential operator $A$ of a special structure acting in the space $L^2 ({\Bbb R}) $. As an example, we consider integral operators $H$ in the space $L^2 ({\Bbb R}_{+}) $ with kernels $P (\ln (t+s)) (t+s)^{-1}$ where $P(x)$ is an arbitrary real polynomial of degree $K$. In this case, $A$ is a differential operator of the same order $K$. This allows us to study spectral properties of Hankel operators $H$ with such kernels. In particular, we show that the essential spectrum of $H$ coincides with the whole axis for $K$ odd, and it coincides with the positive half-axis for $K$ even. In the latter case we additionally find necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of $H$. We also consider Hankel operators whose kernels have a strong singularity at some positive point. We show that spectra of such operators consist of the zero eigenvalue of infinite multiplicity and eigenvalues accumulating to $+\infty$ and $-\infty$. We find the asymptotics of these eigenvalues.

Spectral and scattering theory for perturbations of the Carleman operator

We study spectral properties of the Carleman operator (the Hankel operator with kernel $h_{0}(t)=t^{-1}$) and, in particular, find an explicit formula for its resolvent. Then we consider perturbations of the Carleman operator $H_{0}$ by Hankel operators $V$ with kernels $v(t)$ decaying sufficiently rapidly as $t\to\infty$ and not too singular at t=0. Our goal is to develop scattering theory for the pair $H_{0}$, $H=H_{0} +V $ and to construct an expansion in eigenfunctions of the continuous spectrum of the Hankel operator $H$. We also prove that under general assumptions the singular continuous spectrum of the operator $H$ is empty and that its eigenvalues may accumulate only to the edge points 0 and $π$ in the spectrum of $H_{0}$. We find simple conditions for the finiteness of the total number of eigenvalues of the operator $H$ lying above the (continuous) spectrum of the Carleman operator $H_{0}$ and obtain an explicit estimate of this number. The theory constructed is somewhat analogous to the theory of one-dimensional differential operators.

A trace formula for differential operators of arbitrary order

An operator $H=H_{0}+V$ where $H_{0}=i^{-N} \partial^{N}$ ($N$ is arbitrary) and $V$ is a differential operator of order $N-1$ with coefficients decaying sufficiently rapidly at infinity is considered in the space $L^2(\Bbb R)$. The goal of the paper is to find an expression for the trace of the difference of the resolvents $(H-z)^{-1}$ and $(H_{0}-z)^{-1}$ in terms of the Wronskian of appropriate solutions to the differential equation $Hu=zu$. This also leads to a representation for the perturbation determinant of the pair $H_{0}, H$.
