Differential entropy per particle as a probe of van Hove singularities and flat bands

In the present paper we derive the general expressions for the differential entropy per particle near van Hove singularities (vHs) in the density of states. The dependence of entropy per particle on chemical potential and temperature demonstrates different behavior depending on the type of vHs, and distinguishes high-order vHs with different divergence exponents and flat bands. In addition, it allows one to test the ``flatness" of the band in experiment. We compare the analytic predictions with the numerical calculation of the differential entropy for tight-binding models of graphene, Lieb lattice and square-octagon lattice. Our results show that the obtained analytic expressions capture the main features of the differential entropy, thus serving as a good probe for details of the density of states structure.

Half-integer charge injection by a Josephson junction without excess noise

A Josephson junction in a topological superconductor can inject a charge e/2 into a normal-metal contact, carried by chiral Majorana edge modes. Here we address the question whether this half-integer charge is a sharp observable, without quantum fluctuations. Because the Majorana modes are gapless, they support charge fluctuations in equilibrium at zero temperature. But we find that the excess noise introduced out of equilibrium by the e/2 charge transfer vanishes. We discuss a strategy to reduce the equilibrium fluctuations, by means of a heavy-tailed time-dependent detection efficiency, to achieve a nearly noiseless half-integer charge transfer.

Plasmon Resonances and Tachyon Ghost Modes in Highly Conducting Sheets

Plasmon-polariton modes in two-dimensional electron gases have a dual field-matter nature that endows them with unusual properties when electrical conductivity exceeds a certain threshold set by the speed of light. In this regime plasmons display an interesting relation with tachyons, the hypothetical faster-than-light particles. While not directly observable, tachyons directly impact properties of plasmon modes. Namely, in the ``tachyon'' regime, plasmon resonances remain sharp even when the carrier collision rate γγ exceeds plasmon resonance frequency. Resonances feature a recurrent behavior as γγ increases, first broadening and then narrowing and acquiring asymmetric non-Lorentzian lineshapes with power-law tails extending into the tachyon continuum ω>ckω>ck. This unusual behavior can be linked to the properties of tachyon poles located beneath ω>ckω>ck branch cuts in the complex ωω plane: as γγ grows, tachyon poles approach the light cone and hybridize with plasmons. Narrow resonances persisting for γ>ωγ>ω, along with the unusual density and temperature dependence of resonance frequencies, provide clear signatures of the tachyon regime.

RKKY interaction in a doped pseudospin-1 fermion system at finite temperature

We study the RKKY interaction of magnetic impurities in the α−T3α-\mathcal{T}_3 model which hosts pseudospin-1 fermions with two dispersive and one flat bands. By using the effective low-energy Hamiltonian we calculate the RKKY coupling for impurities placed on the same or different sublattices. We find that there are three types of interaction, which depend on the model parameter defining the relative strength of hoppings between sublattices, two of them can be reduced to graphene case while the third one is new and is due to the presence of a flat zero-energy band. We derive general analytical expressions for the RKKY interaction in terms of Mellin-Barnes type integrals and analyze different limiting cases. The cases of finite chemical potential and temperature, as well as asymptotic at large distances are considered. We show that the interaction between impurities located at different rim sites displays a very strong temperature dependence at small doping being a direct consequence of the flat band. The subtleties of the theorem for signs of the RKKY interaction at zero doping, as applied to the T3\mathcal{T}_3 lattice, related to the existence of a dispersionless flat band are discussed.
