Magnon band structure of skyrmion crystals and stereographic projection approach

Using semiclassical method combined with stereographic projection approach, we investigate the magnetic dynamics of the skyrmion crystal (SkX), formed in planar ferromagnet with both Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and uniform magnetic field. The topologically non-trivial ground state of SkX is described in stereographic projection by the complex valued function with simple poles at skyrmions' positions. We use the earlier proposed ansatz for this ground state function in the form of the sum of individual skyrmions. The dynamics follows from the second variation of the classical action. Numerical analysis yields the magnon band structure of tight-binding form in accordance with previously known results. There are two sets of bands, one set with a flat dispersion, topologically trivial and rapidly evolving with magnetic field. Another set is robust to magnetic field, characterized by pronounced dispersion and with the Berry curvature which may be sign-reversal in the Brillouin zone. The developed theory can be straightforwardly generalized for the analysis of magnetic dynamics in topological spin structures of other types.

Triple helix vs. skyrmion lattice in two-dimensional non-centrosymmetric magnets

It is commonly assumed that a lattice of skyrmions, emerging in two-dimensional non-centrosymmetric magnets in external magnetic fields, can be represented as a sum of three magnetic helices. In order to test this assumption we compare two approaches to a description of regular skyrmion structure. We construct (i) a lattice of Belavin-Polyakov-like skyrmions within the stereographic projection method, and (ii) a deformed triple helix defined with the use of elliptic functions. The estimates for the energy density and magnetic profiles show that these two ansatzes are nearly identical at zero temperature for intermediate magnetic fields. However at higher magnetic fields, near the transition to topologically trivial uniform phase, the stereographic projection method is preferable, particularly, for the description of disordered skyrmion liquid phase. We suggest to explore the intensities of the secondary Bragg peaks to obtain the additional information about the magnetic profile of individual skyrmions. We estimate these intensities to be several percents of the main Bragg peak at high magnetic fields.

Tunneling into a Luttinger-liquid coupled to acoustic phonons out of equilibrium

The renormalization of conductances in a Y junction of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires additionally coupled to acoustic longitudinal phonons is investigated in fermionic representation. This system corresponds to geometry of a tunneling experiment and exhibits the interplay between the Coulomb repulsion and the attractive retarded interaction mediated by phonons. The retardation effects related to the propagation of phonons through the junction with arbitrary transmission and reflection amplitudes are taken into account. The appearing logarithmic corrections to conductances of the junction are treated in a renormalization group approach, and scaling exponents are calculated up to infinite order in the interaction after RPA-type summation. The fixed points and corresponding scaling exponents are considered in various non-equilibrium regimes. We show that the boundary exponent and the bulk anomalous dimension of fermion operator are characterized by two different Luttinger parameters, referring to the main wire, thanks to non-local character of phonon-mediated interaction. In the limiting case of the junction of only two wires, the scaling exponents found by our method are in exact correspondence with previous bosonization analysis.

Manipulation of Majorana states in X-junction geometries

We study quantum manipulation based on four Majorana bound states in X-junction geometry. The parameter space of this setup is bigger than of the previously studied Y-junction and is described by SO(4) symmetry group. In order for quantum computation to be dephasing free, two Majorana states have to stay degenerate at all times. We find a condition necessary for that and compute the Berry's phase, $2α$, accumulated during the manipulation. We construct simple protocols for the variety of values of $α$, including $π/8$ needed for the purposes of quantum computation. Although the manipulations in general X-junction geometry are not topologically protected, they may prove to be a feasible compromise for aims of quantum computation.

Stability of a skyrmion and interaction of magnons

The stability of a single Belavin-Polyakov (BP) skyrmion in isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet is studied. Such skyrmion is higher in energy than the uniform ferromagnetic state and is thus metastable. Starting from the lattice model in two spatial dimensions and using Maleyev-Dyson representation for spin operators, we examine the effects of magnon-magnon interaction for two quantities at $T=0$. First we discuss the self-energy corrections to magnon energy. Second we analyze the two-particle Green's function and possible bound states of two magnons. The simplicity of the model makes possible full analytic treatment of all relevant processes. We found that the magnons remain well-defined quasiparticles with a finite lifetime. The bound states of two magnons are suppressed near the skyrmion, although they are not excluded far away from it. A resonance for the magnons of dilational mode in the vicinity of BP skyrmion is also found, which leads to a redistribution of the spectral weight. We conclude that the BP skyrmion as the classical topological object is not destroyed by quantum fluctuations.

Tunneling into and between helical edge states - fermionic approach

We study four-terminal junction of spinless Luttinger liquid wires, which describes either a corner junction of two helical edges states of topological insulators or the tunneling from the spinful wire into the helical edge state. We use the fermionic representation and the scattering state formalism, in order to compute the renormalization group (RG) equations for the linear response conductances. We establish our approach by considering a junction between two possibly non-equivalent helical edge states and find an agreement with the earlier analysis of this situation. Tunneling from the tip of the spinful wire to the edge state is further analyzed which requires some modification of our formalism. In the latter case we demonstrate i) the existence of both fixed lines and conventional fixed points of RG equations, and ii) certain proportionality relations holding for conductances during renormalization. The scaling exponents and phase portraits are obtained in all cases.

Ambiguity in renormalization of X-junction between Luttinger liquid wires

We study four-lead junction of semi-infinite wires by using fermionic representation in the scattering state formalism. The model of spinless fermions with short-range Luttinger liquid type interaction is used. We find the renormalization group (RG) equations for the conductances of the system in the first order of fermionic interaction. In contrast to the well-known cases of two-lead and three-lead junctions, we show that the RG equations cannot be expressed solely in terms of conductances. The appearing ambiguity is resolved by choosing a certain sign defined at the level of S-matrix, but hidden in conductances. The origin of this Z_2 symmetry is traced back to the particle-hole symmetry of our Hamiltonian. We demonstrate two distinct RG flows from any point in the space of conductances. The scaling exponents at the fixed points are not affected by these observations.

Magnon spectrum in ferromagnets with a skyrmion

The analysis of the spin wave excitations in two-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet is performed with a single skyrmion in the ground state. We employ the ideas of semiclassical quantization method, duly modified for the use of the lattice model and Maleyev-Dyson boson representation of spin operators. The resulting Schrödinger equation for magnons describes the dispersion and wave functions of spin-wave excitations with strictly non-negative spectrum. In contrast to usual ferromagnet, we demonstrate the existence of three zero modes, corresponding to conformal symmetries spontaneously violated by the skyrmion configuration.

Transport properties of a two-lead Luttinger liquid junction out of equilibrium: fermionic representation

The electrical current through an arbitrary junction connecting quantum wires of spinless interacting fermions is calculated in fermionic representation. The wires are adiabatically attached to two reservoirs at chemical potentials differing by the applied voltage bias. The relevant scale-dependent contributions in perturbation theory in the interaction up to infinite order are evaluated and summed up. The result allows one to construct renormalization group equations for the conductance as a function of voltage (or temperature, wire length). There are two fixed points at which the conductance follows a power law in terms of a scaling variable $Λ$, which equals the bias voltage $V$, if $V$ is the largest energy scale compared to temperature $T$ and inverse wire length $L^{-1}$, and interpolates between these quantities in the crossover regimes.

Chiral Y-junction of Luttinger liquid wires at strong coupling: fermionic representation

We calculate the conductances of a three-terminal junction set-up of spinless Luttinger liquid wires threaded by a magnetic flux, allowing for different interaction strength g_3 != g in the third wire. We employ the fermionic representation in the scattering state picture, allowing for a direct calculation of the linear response conductances, without the need of introducing contact resistances at the connection points to the outer ideal leads. The matrix of conductances is parametrized by three variables. For these we derive coupled renormalization group (RG) equations, by summing up infinite classes of contributions in perturbation theory. The resulting general structure of the RG equations may be employed to describe junctions with an arbitrary number of wires and arbitrary interaction strength in each wire. The fixed point structure of these equations (for the chiral Y-junction) is analyzed in detail. For repulsive interaction (g,g_3>0) there is only one stable fixed point, corresponding to the complete separation of the wires. For attractive interaction (g<0 and/or g_3<0) four fixed points are found, the stability of which depends on the interaction strength. We confirm our previous weak-coupling result of lines of fixed points for special values of the interaction parameters reaching into the strong coupling domain. We find new fixed points not discussed before, even at the symmetric line g=g_3, at variance with the results of Oshikawa et al. The pair tunneling phenomenon conjectured by the latter authors is not found by us.

Chiral Y-junction of Luttinger liquid wires at weak coupling: lines of stable fixed points

We study the transport properties of a system of three Luttinger liquid wires (with different interaction strengths g, g_3), connected through a Y-junction (main wire and tunneling tip) threaded by magnetic flux, within the scattering state formalism. The scattering matrix and the matrix of conductances are parametrized by three variables. For these we derive coupled RG equations, up to second order in the interaction. The fixed point structure of these equations is analyzed in detail. For repulsive interaction (g, g_3>0) there is only one stable fixed point, corresponding to the complete separation of the wires. For attractive interaction (g<0 and/or g_3<0) four fixed points are found, whose stability depends on the interaction strength. For special values of the interaction parameters (a) g=0, g_3<0 or (b) g_3+g^2/2=0 and g<0 we find whole lines of stable fixed points. In certain regions of the g-g_3-plane the RG flow is towards a fixed point without chirality, implying that the effect of the magnetic flux is completely screened.

Transport through asymmetric two-lead junctions of Luttinger liquid wires

We calculate the conductance of a system of two spinless Luttinger liquid wires with different interaction strengths g_1, g_2, connected through a short junction, within the scattering state formalism. Following earlier work we formulate the problem in current algebra language, and calculate the scale dependent contribution to the conductance in perturbation theory keeping the leading universal contributions to all orders in the interaction strength. From that we derive a renormalization group (RG) equation for the conductance. The analytical solution of the RG-equation is discussed in dependence on g_1, g_2. The regions of stability of the two fixed points corresponding to conductance G=0 and G=1, respectively, are determined.

Constraints on conductances for Y-junction of quantum wires

We consider the Y-junction, connecting three quantum wires, in the scattering states formalism. In the absence of fermionic interaction we analyze the restrictions on the values of conductance matrix, imposed by the unitarity of scattering S-matrix. Using the combination of numerical and analytical results, we describe the four-dimensional body of values of reduced conductance matrix. We show that this body touches the unit sphere at six points only, in accordance with Birkhoff-von Neumann theorem. It implies that the Abelian bosonization analysis for the vanishing interaction strength can be performed only in the vicinity of these six points.

Y-junction connecting Luttinger liquids: fixed point structure and conductances

We study the transport properties of three Luttinger liquid wires (with possibly different interaction strength), connected through a Y-junction, within the scattering state formalism. We first formulate the problem in current algebra language and focus on the case of a symmetric set-up, for which the scattering matrix and the matrix of conductances is parametrized by two variables. For these we derive coupled RG equations, first in a ladder summation up to infinite order in the interaction. The fixed point structure and the implicit solution of these equations is presented. It is shown that higher order terms beyond the ladder approximation do not change the scaling behavior near the fixed points. For sufficiently strong attractive interaction a new fixed point with unusual properties is found.

Asymmetric spin-1/2 two-leg ladders

We consider asymmetric spin-1/2 two-leg ladders with non-equal antiferromagnetic (AF) couplings J_|| and κJ_|| along legs (κ<= 1) and ferromagnetic rung coupling, J_\perp. This model is characterized by a gap Δin the spectrum of spin excitations. We show that in the large J_\perp limit this gap is equivalent to the Haldane gap for the AF spin-1 chain, irrespective of the asymmetry of the ladder. The behavior of the gap at small rung coupling falls in two different universality classes. The first class, which is best understood from the case of the conventional symmetric ladder at κ=1, admits a linear scaling for the spin gap Δ~ J_\perp. The second class appears for a strong asymmetry of the coupling along legs, κJ_|| << J_\perp << J_|| and is characterized by two energy scales: the exponentially small spin gap Δ~ J_\perp \exp(-J_|| / J_\perp), and the bandwidth of the low-lying excitations induced by a Suhl-Nakamura indirect exchange ~ J_\perp^2 /J_|| . We report numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization, density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the spin gap and various spin correlation functions. Our data indicate that the behavior of the string order parameter, characterizing the hidden AF order in Haldane phase, is different in the limiting cases of weak and strong asymmetry. On the basis of the numerical data, we propose a low-energy theory of effective spin-1 variables, pertaining to large blocks on a decimated lattice.

Tunneling into a Luttinger liquid revisited

We study how electron-electron interactions renormalize tunneling into a Luttinger liquid beyond the lowest order of perturbation in the tunneling amplitude. We find that the conventional fixed point has a finite basin of attraction only in the point contact model, but a finite size of the contact makes it generically unstable to the tunneling-induced break up of the liquid into two independent parts. In the course of renormalization to the nonperturbative-in-tunneling fixed point, the tunneling conductance may show a nonmonotonic behavior with temperature or bias voltage.

Luttinger liquids with curvature: Density correlations and Coulomb drag effect

We consider the effect of the curvature in fermionic dispersion on the observable properties of Luttinger liquid (LL). We use the bosonization technique where the curvature is irrelevant perturbation, describing the decay of LL bosons (plasmon modes). When possible, we establish the correspondence between the bosonization and the fermionic approach. We analyze modifications in density correlation functions due to curvature at finite temperatures, T. The most important application of our approach is the analysis of the Coulomb drag by small momentum transfer between two LL, which is only possible due to curvature. Analyzing the a.c. transconductivity in the one-dimensional drag setup, we confirm the results by Pustilnik et al. for T-dependence of drag resistivity, R_{12} ~ T^2 at high and R_{12} ~ T^5 at low temperatures. The bosonization allows for treating both intra- and inter-wire electron-electron interactions in all orders, and we calculate exact prefactors in low-T drag regime. The crossover temperature between the two regimes is T_1 ~ E_F Δ, with Δrelative difference in plasmon velocities. We show that Δ\neq 0 even for identical wires, due to lifting of degeneracy by interwire interaction, U_{12}, leading to crossover from R_{12} ~ U_{12}^2 T^2 to R_{12} \~ T^5/U_{12} at T ~ U_{12}.

RKKY interaction in the nearly-nested Fermi liquid

We present the results of analytical evaluation of the indirect RKKY interaction in a layered metal with nearly nested (almost squared) Fermi surface. The final expressions are obtained in closed form as a combination of Bessel functions. We discuss the notion of the ``2k_F'' oscillations and show that they occur as the far asymptote of our expressions. We show the existence of the intermediate asymptote of the interaction which is of the sign-reversal antiferromagnetic type and is the only term surviving in the limit of exact nesting. A good accordance of our analytical formulas with numerical findings is demonstrated until the interatomic distances. The obtained expressions for the Green's functions extend the previous analytical results into the region of intermediate distances as well.

Quasiparticle damping in two-dimensional superconductors with unconventional pairing.

We calculate the damping of excitations due to four-fermionic interaction in the case of two-dimensional superconductor with nodes in the spectrum. At zero temperature and low frequencies it reveals gapless $ω^3$ behavior at the nodal points. With the frequency increasing the crossover to the normal-state regimes appears. At high frequencies the damping strongly depends on details of a normal-state spectrum parametrization. Two important particular cases such as the models of almost free and tight-binding electrons are studied explicitly and the characteristic scales are expressed through the model-free parameters of the spectrum at the nodal points. The possibility of crossover in temperature dependence of damping in the superconducting phase is discussed.
