Effect of interactions and non-uniform magnetic states on the magnetization reversal of iron nanowire arrays

Ordered ferromagnetic nanowire arrays are widely studied due to the diversity of possible applications. However, there is still no complete understanding of the relation between the array's parameters and its magnetic behavior. The effect of vortex states on the magnetization reversal of large-diameter nanowires is of particular interest. Here, we compare analytical and micromagnetic models with experimental results for three arrays of iron nanowires with diameters of 33, 52 and 70 nm in order to find the balance between the number of approximations and resources used for the calculations. The influence of the vortex states and the effect of interwire interactions on the remagnetization curves is discussed. It has been found that 7 nanowires treated by a mean field model are able to reproduce well the reversal behaviour of the whole array in the case of large diameter nanowires. Vortex states tend to decrease the influence of the structural inhomogeneities on reversal process and thus lead to the increased predictability of the system.

Magnetic and electronic phases of U$_\mathbf{2}$Rh$_\mathbf{3}$Si$_\mathbf{5}$

We present a detailed study of the magnetic and electronic properties of U$_2$Rh$_3$Si$_5$, a material that has been demonstrated to exhibit a first order antiferromagnetic phase transition. From a high magnetic field study, together with extensive experiments in moderate fields, we establish the magnetic phase diagrams for all crystallographic directions. The possibility of an electronic phase in a narrow interval above the Néel temperature as a precursor of a magnetic phase is discussed.

Electronic ground state of MnB$_{4}$

Recent studies have dealt with the electronic and magnetic ground state properties of the tetraboride material MnB$_4$. So far, however, the ground state properties could not be established unambiguously. Therefore, here we present an experimental study on single-crystalline MnB$_4$ by means of resistivity and magnetization measurements. For this, we have developed a sample holder that allows four-point ac resistivity measurements on these very small ($\sim$\,100\,$μ$m) samples. With our data we establish that the electronic ground state of MnB$_4$ is intrinsically that of a pseudo-gap system, in agreement with recent band structure calculations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the material does neither show magnetic order nor a behavior arising from the vicinity to a magnetically ordered state, this way disproving previous claims.

Hidden quantum phase transition in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge: evidence brought by small-angle neutron scattering

The magnetic system of the Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge solid solution is ordered in a spiral spin structure in the whole concentration range of $x \in [0 ÷1]$. The close inspection of the small-angle neutron scattering data reveals the quantum phase transition from the long-range ordered (LRO) to short range ordered (SRO) helical structure upon increase of Fe-concentration at $x \in [0.25 ÷0.4]$. The SRO of the helical structure is identified as a Lorentzian contribution, while LRO is associated with the Gaussian contribution into the scattering profile function. The scenario of the quantum phase transition with $x$ as a driving parameter is similar to the thermal phase transition in pure MnGe. The quantum nature of the SRO is proved by the temperature independent correlation length of the helical structure at low and intermediate temperature ranges with remarkable decrease above certain temperature $T_Q$. We suggest the $x$-dependent modification of the effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida exchange interaction within the Heisenberg model of magnetism to explain the quantum critical regime in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge.

Structural disorder versus chiral magnetism in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$

The crystal structure of a disordered form of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ has been characterized using diffraction and inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation. In contrast to the previously reported symmetry (P6$_3$22), the crystal can be described by a regular twinning of an average P6$_3$ structure with three disordered positions of the Cr ions. Short-range correlations of the occupational disorder result in a quite intense and structured diffuse scattering; a static nature of the disorder was unambiguously attributed by the inelastic x-ray scattering. The diffuse scattering has been modeled using a reverse Monte-Carlo algorithm assuming a disorder of the Cr sub-lattice only. The observed correlated disorder of the Cr sub-lattice reduces the temperature of the magnetic ordering from 130 K to 88 K and drastically modifies the field dependence of the magnetization as it is evidenced by the SQUID magnetometery. We conclude, that in contrast to the helicoidal spin structure assumed for P6$_3$22 form, the compound under study is ferromagnetically ordered with a pronounced in-plane anisotropy.

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is under control: an orchestrated flip of the chiral link between structure and magnetism for Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si

Monosilicides of 3d-metals frequently show a chiral magnetic ordering with the absolute configuration defined by the chirality of the crystal structure and the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Structural and magnetic chiralities are probed here for Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si series and their mutual relationship is found to be dependent on the chemical composition. The chirality of crystal structure was previously shown to be governed by crystal growth, and the value of the DMI is nearly the same for all monosilicides of Fe, Co and Mn. Our findings indicate that the sign of the DMI in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si is controlled by the Co composition $x$, thus, opening a route towards controlled design of chiral spintronics devices.

Electron-phonon interaction and spectral weight transfer in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si

A comprehensive ellipsometric study was performed on Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si single crystals in the spectral range from 0.01 eV to 6.2 eV. Direct and indirect band gaps of 73 meV and 10 meV, respectively, were observed in FeSi at 7 K. One of four infrared-active phonons that is energetically close to the direct absorption edge is coupled both to the electrons and to the low-energy phonon. This is evident from asymmetry in the phonon line shape and a reduction of its frequency when the absorption edge shifts across the phonon energy due to the temperature dependence of the direct band gap. As the temperature increases, the indirect gap changes sign, which manifests as a transition from a semiconductor to a semimetal. The corresponding gain of the spectral weight at low energies was recovered within an energy range of several eV. The present findings strongly support the model indicating that Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si can be well described in an itinerant picture, taking into account self-energy corrections.
