The NEVOD-EAS air-shower array

The Experimental complex NEVOD includes several different setups for studying various components of extensive air showers (EAS) in the energy range from 10^10 to 10^18 eV. The NEVOD-EAS array for detection of the EAS electron-photon component began its data taking in 2018. It is a distributed system of scintillation detectors installed over an area of about 10^4 m^2. A distinctive feature of this array is its cluster organization with different-altitude layout of the detecting elements. The main goal of the NEVOD-EAS array is to obtain an estimation of the primary particle energy for events measured by various detectors of the Experimental complex NEVOD. This paper describes the design, operation principles and data processing of the NEVOD-EAS array. The criteria for the event selection and the accuracy of the EAS parameters reconstruction obtained on the simulated events are discussed. The results of the preliminary analysis of experimental data obtained during a half-year operation are presented.

Barometric pumping effect for radon-due neutron flux in underground laboratories

It is known that neutron background is a big problem for low-background experiments in underground Laboratories. Our global net of en-detectors sensitive to thermal neutrons includes the detectors running both on the surface and at different depths underground. We present here results obtained with the en-detector of 0.75 m^2 which is running more than 3 years in underground room at a depth of 25 m of water equivalent in Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Moscow. Spontaneous increases in thermal neutron flux up to a factor of 3 were observed in delayed anti-correlation with barometric pressure. The phenomenon can be explained by a radon barometric pumping effect resulting in similar effect in neutron flux produced in (alpha,n)-reactions by alpha-decays of radon and its daughters in surrounding rock

Characteristics of EAS neutron component obtained with PRISMA-32 array

The paper is devoted to the results of the EAS neutron component investigations by means of the PRISMA-32 array. The array consists of 32 en-detectors and enables to record delayed thermal neutrons accompanying showers. For registration of thermal neutrons, the scintillator based on $^{6}Li$ isotope as a target is used in the detectors. Some results of the processing of data accumulated over a long period of time are presented: the lateral distribution function of neutrons in EAS and preliminary results on EAS neutron multiplicity spectrum and distribution of showers in e/n ratio.

New detectors of the Experimental complex NEVOD for multicomponent EAS detection

Experimental complex (EC) NEVOD includes a number of unique experimental facilities for studies of main components of cosmic rays on the Earth's surface. The complex is used for the basic research of CR flux characteristics and their interactions in the energy range 10^15 - 10^19 eV, and for applied investigations directed to the development of methods of the muon diagnostics of the atmosphere and the Earth's magnetosphere and near-terrestrial space. To extend the experimental capabilities and raising the status of the installation to the Mega Science level, nowadays new large-scale detectors: array for the EAS registration - NEVOD-EAS, detector of atmospheric neutrons - URAN, and large-area coordinate-tracking detector - TREK, are being deployed around EC NEVOD. The description of new detectors and a common trigger system to ensure the joint operation together with other detectors of EC NEVOD are presented.

EAS thermal neutron lateral and temporal distributions

A novel type of EAS array (PRISMA-32) has been constructed on the base of NEVOD-DECOR experiment (MEPhI,Moscow) and is now taking data. It consists of 32 specially designed scintillator en-detectors able to measure two main EAS components: hadrons (n) and electrons (e). First results on thermal neutron lateral as well as temporal distributions are presented. Obtained exponential neutron lateral distributions are consistent with that expected for normal hadron production with exponential transverse momentum distribution. As there are no other experimental data on thermal neutron distributions and so, to compare results with other measurements, we additionally obtained electron lateral distribution function (using the same detectors) and compared it with NKG - function. Recorded neutron temporal distributions are very close to that obtained with data of our previous prototypes.

Thermal neutron flux produced by EAS at various altitudes

The results of Monte-Carlo simulations of Extensive Air Shower are presented to show the difference of hadronic component content at various altitudes with the aim to choose an optimal altitude for the PRISMA-like experiment. CORSIKA program for EAS simulations with QGSJET and GHEISHA models was used to calculate the number of hadrons reaching the observational level inside a ring of 50 m radius around the EAS axis. Then the number of neutrons produced by the hadronic component was calculated using an empirical relationship between the two components. We have tested the results with the ProtoPRISMA array at sea level, and recorded neutrons are close to the simulation results.
