Interpolatory pointwise estimates for convex polynomial approximation

This paper deals with approximation of smooth convex functions ff on an interval by convex algebraic polynomials which interpolate ff at the endpoints of this interval. We call such estimates "interpolatory". One important corollary of our main theorem is the following result on approximation of f∈Δ(2)f\in Δ^{(2)}, the set of convex functions, from WrW^r, the space of functions on [−1,1][-1,1] for which f(r−1)f^{(r-1)} is absolutely continuous and ∥f(r)∥∞:=ess supx∈[−1,1]∣f(r)(x)∣<∞\|f^{(r)}\|_{\infty} := ess\,sup_{x\in[-1,1]} |f^{(r)}(x)| < \infty: For any f∈Wr∩Δ(2)f\in W^r \capΔ^{(2)}, r∈Nr\in {\mathbb N}, there exists a number N=N(f,r){\mathcal N}={\mathcal N}(f,r), such that for every n≥Nn\ge {\mathcal N}, there is an algebraic polynomial of degree ≤n\le n which is in Δ(2)Δ^{(2)} and such that ∥f−Pnφr∥∞≤c(r)nr∥f(r)∥∞, \left\| \frac{f-P_n}{φ^r} \right\|_{\infty} \leq \frac{c(r)}{n^r} \left\| f^{(r)}\right\|_{\infty} , where φ(x):=1−x2φ(x):= \sqrt{1-x^2}. For r=1r=1 and r=2r=2, the above result holds with N=1{\mathcal N}=1 and is well known. For r≥3r\ge 3, it is not true, in general, with N{\mathcal N} independent of ff.

Yet another look at positive linear operators, qq-monotonicity and applications

For each q∈N0q\in{\mathbb{N}}_0, we construct positive linear polynomial approximation operators MnM_n that simultaneously preserve kk-monotonicity for all 0≤k≤q0\leq k\leq q and yield the estimate ∣f(x)−Mn(f,x)∣≤cω2φλ(f,n−1φ1−λ/2(x)(φ(x)+1/n)−λ/2), |f(x)-M_n(f, x)| \leq c ω_2^{φ^λ} \left(f, n^{-1} φ^{1-λ/2}(x) \left(φ(x) + 1/n \right)^{-λ/2} \right) , for x∈[0,1]x\in [0,1] and λ∈[0,2)λ\in [0, 2), where φ(x):=x(1−x)φ(x) := \sqrt{x(1-x)} and ω2ψω_2^ψ is the second Ditzian-Totik modulus of smoothness corresponding to the "step-weight function" ψψ. In particular, this implies that the rate of best uniform qq-monotone polynomial approximation can be estimated in terms of ω2φ(f,1/n)ω_2^φ \left(f, 1/n \right).

Constrained Spline Smoothing

Several results on constrained spline smoothing are obtained. In particular, we establish a general result, showing how one can constructively smooth any monotone or convex piecewise polynomial function (ppf) (or any qq-monotone ppf, q≥3q\geq 3, with one additional degree of smoothness) to be of minimal defect while keeping it close to the original function in the Lp{\mathbb L}_p-(quasi)norm. It is well known that approximating a function by ppf's of minimal defect (splines) avoids introduction of artifacts which may be unrelated to the original function, thus it is always preferable. On the other hand, it is usually easier to construct constrained ppf's with as little requirements on smoothness as possible. Our results allow to obtain shape-preserving splines of minimal defect with equidistant or Chebyshev knots. The validity of the corresponding Jackson-type estimates for shape-preserving spline approximation is summarized, in particular we show, that the Lp{\mathbb L}_p-estimates, p≥1p\ge1, can be immediately derived from the L∞{\mathbb L}_\infty-estimates.

New moduli of smoothness

In this paper, we discuss various properties of the new modulus of smoothness ωk,rφ(f(r),t)p:=sup⁡0<h≤t∥Wkhr(⋅)Δhφ(⋅)k(f(r),⋅)∥Lp[−1,1], ω^φ_{k,r}(f^{(r)},t)_p := \sup_{0 < h\leq t}\|\mathcal W^r_{kh}(\cdot) Δ_{hφ(\cdot)}^k (f^{(r)},\cdot)\|_{L_p[-1,1]}, where Wδ(x)=((1−x−δφ(x)/2)(1+x−δφ(x)/2))1/2.\mathcal W_δ(x) = \bigl((1-x-δφ(x)/2) (1+x-δφ(x)/2)\bigr)^{1/2}. Related moduli with more general weights are also considered.

New moduli of smoothness: weighted DT moduli revisited and applied

We introduce new moduli of smoothness for functions f∈Lp[−1,1]∩Cr−1(−1,1)f\in L_p[-1,1]\cap C^{r-1}(-1,1), 1≤p≤∞1\le p\le\infty, r≥1r\ge1, that have an (r−1)(r-1)st locally absolutely continuous derivative in (−1,1)(-1,1), and such that φrf(r)φ^rf^{(r)} is in Lp[−1,1]L_p[-1,1], where φ(x)=(1−x2)1/2φ(x)=(1-x^2)^{1/2}. These moduli are equivalent to certain weighted DT moduli, but our definition is more transparent and simpler. In addition, instead of applying these weighted moduli to weighted approximation, which was the purpose of the original DT moduli, we apply these moduli to obtain Jackson-type estimates on the approximation of functions in Lp[−1,1]L_p[-1,1] (no weight), by means of algebraic polynomials. Moreover, we also prove matching inverse theorems thus obtaining constructive characterization of various smoothness classes of functions via the degree of their approximation by algebraic polynomials.

Uniform and Pointwise Shape Preserving Approximation by Algebraic Polynomials

We survey developments, over the last thirty years, in the theory of Shape Preserving Approximation (SPA) by algebraic polynomials on a finite interval. In this article, "shape" refers to (finitely many changes of) monotonicity, convexity, or q-monotonicity of a function (for definition, see Section 4). It is rather well known that it is possible to approximate a function by algebraic polynomials that preserve its shape (i.e., the Weierstrass approximation theorem is valid for SPA). At the same time, the degree of SPA is much worse than the degree of best unconstrained approximation in some cases, and it is "about the same" in others. Numerous results quantifying this difference in degrees of SPA and unconstrained approximation have been obtained in recent years, and the main purpose of this article is to provide a "bird's-eye view" on this area, and discuss various approaches used. In particular, we present results on the validity and invalidity of uniform and pointwise estimates in terms of various moduli of smoothness. We compare various constrained and unconstrained approximation spaces as well as orders of unconstrained and shape preserving approximation of particular functions, etc. There are quite a few interesting phenomena and several open questions.
