Vortical susceptibility of finite-density QCD matter

The susceptibility of finite-density QCD matter to vorticity is introduced, as an analog of magnetic susceptibility. It describes the spin polarization of quarks and antiquarks in finite-density QCD matter induced by rotation. We estimate this quantity in the chirally broken phase using the mixed gauge-gravity anomaly at finite baryon density. It is proposed that the vortical susceptibility of QCD matter is responsible for the polarization of $Λ$ and ${\bar Λ}$ hyperons observed recently in heavy ion collisions at RHIC by the STAR Collaboration.

Breakdown of the N=0 Quantum Hall State in graphene: two insulating regimes

We studied the unusual Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) near the charge neutrality point (CNP) in high-mobility graphene sample for magnetic fields up to 18 T. We observe breakdown of the delocalized QHE transport and strong increase in resistivities $ρ_{xx},|ρ_{xy}|$ with decreasing Landau level filling for $ν< 2$, where we identify two insulating regimes. For $1 \gtrsim |ν| \gtrsim 1/2$ we find an exponential increase of $ρ_{xx,xy} \sim e^{a(H-H_c)}$ within the range up to several resistance quanta $R_K$, while the Hall effect gradually disappears, consistent with the Hall insulator (HI) with local transport. Then, at $ν\approx 1/2$ a cusp in $ρ_{xx}(H)$ followed by an onset of even faster growth indicates transition to a collective insulator (CI) state. The likely candidate for this state is a pinned Wigner crystal.

Universal properties of bulk viscosity near the QCD phase transition

We extract the bulk viscosity of hot quark-gluon matter in the presence of light quarks from the recent lattice data on the QCD equation of state. For that purpose we extend the sum rule analysis by including the contribution of light quarks. We also discuss the universal properties of bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second order phase transition, as it might occur in the chiral limit of QCD at fixed strange quark mass and most likely does occur in two-flavor QCD. We point out that a chiral transition in the O(4) universality class at zero baryon density as well as the transition at the chiral critical point which belongs to the Z(2) universality class both lead to the critical behavior of bulk viscosity. In particular, the latter universality class implies the divergence of the bulk viscosity, which may be used as a signature of the critical point. We discuss the physical picture behind the dramatic increase of bulk viscosity seen in our analysis, and devise possible experimental tests of related phenomena.

Parity violation in hot QCD: why it can happen, and how to look for it

The arguments for the possibility of violation of P and CP symmetries of strong interactions at finite temperature are presented. A new way of observing these effects in heavy ion collisions is proposed -- it is shown that parity violation should manifest itself in the asymmetry between positive and negative pions with respect to the reaction plane. Basing on topological considerations, we derive a {\it lower} bound on the magnitude of the expected asymmetry, which may appear within the reach of the current and/or future heavy ion experiments.

Theoretical summary: The First International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

This is an attempt to summarize the theoretical talks given at the First International Conference "Hard Probes '04", dedicated to the study of the properties of quark-gluon matter and its diagnostics with the hard processes. The talk covers the following topics: the structure of quark-gluon matter at finite temperature; the theory of nuclear wave functions at small Bjorken x; the propagation of jets, heavy quarkonia and heavy quarks through the dense QCD matter.

Open charm production in heavy ion collisions and the Color Glass Condensate

We consider the production of open charm in heavy ion collisions in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. In the central rapidity region at RHIC, for the charm quark yield we expect N(coll) (number of collisions) scaling in the absence of final-state effects. At higher energies, or forward rapidities at RHIC, the saturation scale exceeds the charm quark mass; we find that this results in the approximate N(part) (number of participants) scaling of charm production in AA collisions and N(part)^A scaling in p(d)A collisions, similarly to the production of high pT gluons discussed earlier. We also show that the saturation phenomenon makes spectra harder as compared to the naive parton model approach. We then discuss the energy loss of charm quarks in hot and cold media and argue that the hardness of the spectrum implies very slow dependence of the quenching factor on pT.

Classical gluodynamics in curved space--time and the soft Pomeron

QCD at the classical level possesses scale invariance which is broken by quantum effects. This ``dimensional transmutation'' phenomenon can be mathematically described by formulating classical gluodynamics in a curved, conformally flat, space-time with non-vanishing cosmological constant. We study QCD high-energy scattering in this theory. We find that the properties of the scattering amplitude at small momentum transfer are determined by the energy density of vacuum fluctuations. The approach gives rise to the power growth of the total hadron-hadron cross section with energy, i.e. the Pomeron. The intercept of the Pomeron and the multiplicity of produced particles are evaluated. We also speculate about a possible link between conformal anomaly and TeV scale quantum gravity.

Parton saturation and N_part scaling of semi--hard processes in QCD

We argue that the suppression of high p_t hadrons discovered recently in heavy ion collisions at RHIC may be a consequence of saturation in the Color Glass Condensate. We qualitatively and semi-quantitatively describe the data, in particular, the dependence upon the number of nucleon participants. We show that if parton saturation sets in at sufficiently small energy, then in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies the cross sections of semi-hard processes should scale approximately with the number of participants, N_{part}. Our results provide a possible explanation of both the absence of apparent jet quenching at SPS energies and its presence at RHIC. Under the same assumption we predict that in semi--central and central pA (dA) collisions at collider energies the dependence of semi--hard processes on the number of participating nucleons of the nucleus will change to \sim (N_{part}^A)^{1/2}. The forthcoming data on dA collisions will provide a crucial test of this description.

$J/ψ$ Photoproduction and the Gluon Structure of the Nucleon

Using short distance QCD methods based on the operator product expansion, we calculate the $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross section in terms of the gluon distribution function of the nucleon. Comparing the result with data, we show that experimental behaviour of the cross section correctly reflects the $x$-dependence of the gluon distribution obtained from deep inelastic scattering.

Chi_2 production in polarized pp collisions at RHIC: measuring ΔG and testing the color octet model

We consider the production and decay of the $χ_2$ charmonium state in polarized and unpolarized $pp$ collisions at RHIC in the framework of an effective theory based on the QCD multipole expansion. We find that the angular distribution in the decay of the produced charmonium, $χ_2 \to J/ψ+ γ$, in the unpolarized case allows us to distinguish clearly between the color singlet and color octet production mechanisms. Once the production mechanism is known, the angular distribution in the polarized case can be used to measure the polarized gluon distribution in the proton, $ΔG(x)$.

Interactions of quarkonium at low energies

We present two examples of the short-distance QCD calculations for the quarkonium (Φ) interactions; 1) πΦelastic and πΦ-> πΦ' cross sections, and 2) the potential between two Φ's. The former is relevant for the Φsuppression in heavy ion collisions; we find that the corresponding cross sections are very small. For the latter we derive the sum rule which relates the strength of the potential to the energy density of the QCD vacuum. The key starting point in both cases is that the leading operator in the operator product expansion (OPE) for the low--energy scattering amplitude is the trace of the QCD stress tensor whose matrix elements are unambiguously fixed by the low energy theorem. The resonances in the two-pion scalar channel are taken into account as a formfactor.

Possibility of spontaneous parity violation in hot QCD

We suggest that for QCD in the limit of a large number of colors, N, the axial U(1) symmetry of massless quarks is effectively restored at the deconfining=chiral phase transition. If the deconfining transition is of second order, then the chiral transition is weakly first order. In this case, metastable states in which parity is spontaneously broken appear at temperatures below the phase transition. The production of these metastable states would have dramatic signatures, including enhanced production of eta and eta' mesons, which can decay through parity violating decay processes such as eta -> pi^0 pi^0, and global parity odd asymmetries for charged pions. Using a nonlinear sigma model, in QCD these metastable states only appear rather near the phase transition.

THE PROTON SPIN PUZZLE AND DEPOLARIZATION IN $\bar{p}p\to\barΛΛ$

We point out that the measurement of target spin depolarization $D_{nn}$ in the $\bar{p}p\to\barΛΛ$ reaction may test dynamical mechanisms invoked to explain the proton spin puzzle revealed by polarized deep--inelastic scattering experiments. In particular, models with {\it negatively} polarized $\bar{s}s$ pairs in the proton wave function predict $D_{nn}<0$, whereas models with {\it positively} polarized gluons would predict $D_{nn}>0$.
