Investigation of the Magnetic Model in Multiferroic NdFe3_{3}(BO3_{3})4_{4} by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of NdFe3_{3}(11^{11}BO3_{3})4_{4} to explore the magnetic excitations, to establish the underlying Hamiltonian, and to reveal the detailed nature of hybridization between the 4ff and 3dd magnetism. The observed spectra exhibiting a couple of key features, i.e., anti-crossing of Nd- and Fe-excitations and anisotropy gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center, are explained by the magnetic model including spin interaction in the framework of weakly-coupled Fe3+^{3+} chains, interaction between the Fe3+^{3+} and Nd3+^{3+} moments, and single-ion anisotropy derived from Nd3+^{3+} crystal field. The combination of the measurements and calculations reveals that the hybridization between 4ff and 3dd magnetism propagates the local magnetic anisotropy of the Nd3+^{3+} ion to the Fe3+^{3+} network, resulting in the bulk structure of multiferroics.

Experimental confirmation of spin gap in antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain substances RCrGeO5 (R = Y or 154Sm) by inelastic neutron scattering experiments

A spin-singlet ground state with a spin gap has been discovered in antiferromagnetic spin chain substances when the spin value is 1/2, 1 or 2. To find spin gap (singlet-triplet) excitations in spin-3/2 chain substances, we performed inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements on {\it R}CrGeO5_5 ({\it R} = Y or Sm) powders. As expected, we observed spin gap excitations and the dispersion relation of the lowest magnetic excitations. We proved that the spin system of Cr3+^{3+} was an antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain.

Neutron Brillouin scattering with pulsed spallation neutron source - spin-wave excitations from ferromagnetic powder samples -

Neutron Brillouin scattering (NBS) method was developed using a pulsed spallation neutron source, and the feasibility of NBS was demonstrated by observing ferromagnetic spin waves in La0.8_{0.8}Sr0.2_{0.2}MnO3_3 and SrRuO3_3 powders. Gapless spin-wave excitations were observed in La0.8_{0.8}Sr0.2_{0.2}MnO3_3, which were continuously extended to the lower scattering vector QQ from previous results using single crystals. The novel result is a well-defined quadratic QQ dependence in the spin-wave dispersion curve with a large energy gap in SrRuO3_3 indicating robust spin-orbit coupling.

Effect of cation size variance on spin and orbital order in Eu1−x_{1-x}(La0.254_{0.254}Y0.746_{0.746})x_{x}VO3_3

We have investigated the RR-ion (RR = rare earth or Y) size variance effect on spin/orbital order in Eu1−x_{1-x}(La0.254_{0.254}Y0.746_{0.746})x_{x}VO3_3. The size variance disturbs one-dimensional orbital correlation in CC-type spin/GG-type orbital ordered states and suppresses this spin/orbital order. In contrast, it stabilizes the other spin/orbital order. The results of neutron and resonant X-ray scattering denote that in the other ordered phase, the spin/orbital patterns are GG-type/CC-type, respectively.
