Electronic structure and physical properties of EuAuAs single crystal

High-quality single crystals of EuAuAs were studied by means of powder x-ray diffraction, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements. The compound crystallizes with a hexagonal structure of the ZrSiBe type (space group $P6_3/mmc$). It orders antiferromagnetically below 6 K due to the magnetic moments of divalent Eu ions. The electrical resistivity exhibits metallic behavior down to 40 K, followed by a sharp increase at low temperatures. The magnetotransport isotherms show a distinct metamagnetic-like transition in concert with the magnetization data. The antiferromagnetic ground state in \mbox{EuAuAs} was corroborated in the \textit{ab initio} electronic band structure calculations. Most remarkably, the calculations revealed the presence of nodal line without spin-orbit coupling and Dirac point with inclusion of spin-orbit coupling. The \textit{Z}$_2$ invariants under the effective time reversal and inversion symmetries make this system nontrivial topological material. Our findings, combined with experimental analysis, makes EuAuAs a plausible candidate for an antiferromagnetic topological nodal-line semimetal.

Tuning the Parity Mixing of Singlet-Septet Pairing in a Half-Heusler Superconductor

In superconductors, electrons with spin ${s=1/2}$ form Cooper pairs whose spin structure is usually singlet (${S=0}$) or triplet (${S=1}$). When the electronic structure near the Fermi level is characterized by fermions with angular momentum ${j=3/2}$ due to strong spin-orbit interactions, novel pairing states such as even-parity quintet (${J=2}$) and odd-parity septet (${J=3}$) states become allowed. Prime candidates for such exotic states are half-Heusler superconductors, which exhibit unconventional superconducting properties, but their pairing nature remains unsettled. Here we show that the superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric half-Heusler LuPdBi can be consistently described by the admixture of isotropic even-parity singlet and anisotropic odd-parity septet pairing, whose ratio can be tuned by electron irradiation. From magnetotransport and penetration depth measurements, we find that carrier concentrations and impurity scattering both increase with irradiation, resulting in a nonmonotonic change of the superconducting gap structure. Our findings shed new light on our fundamental understanding of unconventional superconducting states in topological materials.

Synthesis and properties of A$_x$V$_2$Al$_{20}$ (A = Th, U, Np, Pu) ternary actinide aluminides

Polycrystalline samples of A$_x$V$_2$Al$_{20}$ (A = Ce, Th, U, Np, Pu; 0.7 =< x =< 1.0) actinide intermetallics were synthesized using the arc-melting method. Crystal structure studies were performed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement method. All studied compounds crystallize in the CeCr$_{2}$Al$_{20}$-type structure (space group Fd-3m, no. 227) with the actinide or Ce atom located in the oversized cage formed by Al atoms. Comparison of the crystallographic results with the reported data for LnV$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ (Ln = lanthanoids) counterparts reveals distinctly different behavior of the lanthanide- and actinide-bearing compounds. This difference is suggested to be caused by fairly localized character of the 4f electrons, whereas itinerant character of the 5f electrons is likely seen for U- and Np-containing phases. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements did not reveal any magnetic ordering in U$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, Np$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ and Pu$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ down to 2.5 K. A small anomaly in low-temperature specific heat of Ce$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, U$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, and Np$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ is observed, likely arising from a low-energy Einstein mode.

Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces of the heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$

We report low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in magnetic fields up to 35 T of the heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$. The comparison of the experimental results with band-structure calculations implies that the 4$f$ electrons are itinerant rather than localized. The cyclotron masses estimated at high field are only moderately enhanced, 8 and 14 $m_0$, but are substantially larger than the corresponding band masses. The observed angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies suggests quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces in agreement with band-structure calculations. However, the deviation from ideal two dimensionality is larger than in CeCoIn$_5$, with which Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$ bears a lot of similarities. This subtle distinction accounts for the different superconducting critical temperatures of the two compounds.

Evidence of momentum dependent hybridization in Ce2Co0.8Si3.2

We studied the electronic structure of the Kondo lattice system Ce2Co0.8Si3.2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The spectra obtained below the coherence temperature consist of a Kondo resonance, its spin-orbit partner and a number of dispersing bands. The quasiparticle weight related to the Kondo peak depends strongly on Fermi vectors associated with bulk bands. This indicates a highly anisotropic hybridization between conduction band and 4f electrons - V_{cf} in Ce2Co0.8Si3.2.

Anomalous superfluid density in quantum critical superconductors

When a second-order magnetic phase transition is tuned to zero temperature by a non-thermal parameter, quantum fluctuations are critically enhanced, often leading to the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. In these `quantum critical' superconductors it has been widely reported that the normal-state properties above the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ often exhibit anomalous non-Fermi liquid behaviors and enhanced electron correlations. However, the effect of these strong critical fluctuations on the superconducting condensate below $T_c$ is less well established. Here we report measurements of the magnetic penetration depth in heavy-fermion, iron-pnictide, and organic superconductors located close to antiferromagnetic quantum critical points showing that the superfluid density in these nodal superconductors universally exhibit, unlike the expected $T$-linear dependence, an anomalous 3/2 power-law temperature dependence over a wide temperature range. We propose that this non-integer power-law can be explained if a strong renormalization of effective Fermi velocity due to quantum fluctuations occurs only for momenta $\bm{k}$ close to the nodes in the superconducting energy gap $Δ(\bm{k})$. We suggest that such `nodal criticality' may have an impact on low-energy properties of quantum critical superconductors.

Quantum criticality near the upper critical field of Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$

We report low-temperature specific heat measurements in magnetic fields up to 12 T applied parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis of the heavy fermion superconductor Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$. In contrast to its quasi-two-dimensional (2D) relative CeCoIn$_5$, the system displays an almost isotropic upper critical field. While there is no indication for a FFLO phase in Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$, the data suggest a smeared weak first-order superconducting transition close to $H_{c2}\approx 2$ T. The normal state electronic specific heat coefficient displays logarithmically divergent behavior, comparable to CeCoIn$_5$ and in agreement with 2D quantum criticality of spin-density-wave type.

Nodal superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in Ce2PdIn8 studied by 115In nuclear quadrupole resonance

Nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements were performed on the heavy fermion superconductor Ce2PdIn8. Above the Kondo coherence temperature T_coh \simeq 30K, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 is temperature independent, whereas at lower temperatures, down to the onset of superconductivity at T_c = 0.64K, it is nearly proportional to T^{1/2}. Below T_c, 1/T_1 shows no coherence peak and decreases as T^3 down to 75mK. All these findings indicate that Ce2PdIn8 is close to the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, and the superconducting state has an unconventional character with line nodes in the superconducting gap.

Search for quantum criticality in a ferromagnetic system UNi1-xCoxSi2

Polycrystalline samples of the isostructural alloys UNi1-xCoxSi2 (0 <= x <= 1) were studied by means of x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements, at temperatures down to 2 K and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The experimental data revealed an evolution from strongly anisotropic ferromagnetism with pronounced Kondo effect, observed for the alloys with x < 0.98 and being gradually suppressed with rising Co-content, to spin-glass-like states with dominant spin fluctuations, seen for the sample with x = 0.98. Extrapolation of the value of TC(x) yields a critical concentration xc = 1, at which the magnetic ordering entirely disappears. This finding is in line with preliminary data collected for stoichiometric UCoSi2.

Evolution from localized to intermediate valence regime in Ce2Cu2-xNixIn

Polycrystalline samples of the solid solution Ce2Cu2-xNixIn were studied by means of x-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements performed in a wide temperature range. Partial substitution of copper atoms by nickel atoms results in quasi-linear decrease of the lattice parameters and the unit cell volume of the system. The lattice compression leads to an increase in the exchange integral and yields a reversal in the order of the magnetic 4f1 and nonmagnetic 4f0 states, being in line with the Doniach phase diagram. In the localized regime, where an interplay of the Kondo scattering and the crystalline electric field effect takes place, the rise in the hybridization strength is accompanied with relative reduction in the scattering conduction electrons on excited crystal field levels. Field-induced quantum critical point and nodal superconductivity in the heavy-fermion superconductor Ce2PdIn8

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity has been a central issue in unconventional superconductors. While the dynamic magnetism could be the source of electron pairing, the static magnetism is generally believed to compete with superconductivity. In this sense, the observation of Q phase, the coupled spin-density wave order and superconductivity, in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is very puzzling. Whether this Q phase origins from the novel Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is under hot debate. Here we report the resistivity and thermal conductivity study of a newly discovered heavy-fermion superconductor Ce2PdIn8 down to 50 mK. We find an unusual field-induced quantum critical point at the upper critical field Hc2 and unconventional nodal superconductivity in Ce2PdIn8. The jump of thermal conductivity k(H)/T near Hc2 suggests a first-order-like phase transition at low temperatures. These results mimic the features of the Q phase in CeCoIn5, implying that Ce2PdIn8 is another promising compound to investigate the exotic Q phase and FFLO state. The comparison between CeCoIn5 and Ce2PdIn8 may help to clarify the origin of the Q phase.

Magnetic and transport properties of rare-earth-based half-Heusler phases RPdBi: prospective systems for topological quantum phenomena

RPdBi (R = Er, Ho, Gd, Dy, Y, Nd) compounds were studied by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistivity, thermoelectric power and Hall effect measurements, performed in the temperature range 1.5-300 K and in magnetic fields up to 12 T. These ternaries, except diamagnetic YPdBi, exhibit localized magnetism of $R^{3+}$ ions, and order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures ($T_{N}$ = 2-13 K). The transport measurements revealed behavior characteristic of semimetals or narrow-band semiconductors. Both, electrons and holes contribute to the conductivity with dominant role of p-type carriers. The Hall effect of ErPdBi is strongly temperature and magnetic field dependent, reflecting complex character of the underlying electronic structures with multiple electron and hole bands. RPdBi, and especially DyPdBi, exhibit very good thermoelectric properties with a power factor coefficient $PF$ ranging from 6 to 20 $μ$Wcm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$.

Giant crystal-electric-field effect and complex magnetic behavior in single-crystalline CeRh3Si2

Single-crystalline CeRh3Si2 was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements carried out in wide temperature and magnetic field ranges. Moreover, the electronic structure of the compound was studied at room temperature by cerium core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The physical properties were analyzed in terms of crystalline electric field and compared with results of ab-initio band structure calculations performed within the density functional theory approach. The compound was found to crystallize in the orthorhombic unit cell of the ErRh3Si2 type (space group Imma -- No.74, Pearson symbol: oI24) with the lattice parameters: a = 7.1330(14) A, b = 9.7340(19) A, and c = 5.6040(11) A. Analysis of the magnetic and XPS data revealed the presence of well localized magnetic moments of trivalent cerium ions. All physical properties were found to be highly anisotropic over the whole temperature range studied, and influenced by exceptionally strong crystalline electric field with the overall splitting of the 4f1 ground multiplet exceeding 5700 K. Antiferromagnetic order of the cerium magnetic moments at TN = 4.70(1)K and their subsequent spin rearrangement at Tt = 4.48(1) K manifest themselves as distinct anomalies in the temperature characteristics of all investigated physical properties and exhibit complex evolution in an external magnetic field. A tentative magnetic B-T phase diagram, constructed for B parallel to the b-axis being the easy magnetization direction, shows very complex magnetic behavior of CeRh3Si2, similar to that recently reported for an isostructural compound CeIr3Si2. The electronic band structure calculations corroborated the antiferromagnetic ordering of the cerium magnetic moments and well reproduced the experimental XPS valence band spectrum.

Heavy-fermion superconductivity in Ce2PdIn8

The compound Ce2PdIn8 is a recently discovered novel member of the series Ce(n)TIn(3n+2), where T = d-electron transition metal, and n = 1 or 2. So far, only the phases with T = Co, Rh and Ir have been intensively studied for their unconventional superconducting behaviors at low temperatures. By means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements we provide evidence that also Ce2PdIn8 has a superconducting ground state with strong heavy-fermion character. The clean-limit superconductivity sets in at Tc = 0.7 K at ambient pressure, likely at a verge of a quantum phase transition that manifests itself in a form of distinct non-Fermi liquid features in the bulk normal state characteristics.

Magnetic properties and electronic structures of intermediate valence systems CeRhSi2 and Ce2Rh3Si5

The crystal structures and the physical (magnetic, electrical transport and thermodynamic) properties of the ternary compounds CeRhSi2 and Ce2Rh3Si5 (orthorhombic CeNiSi2- and U2Co3Si5-type structures, respectively) were studied in wide ranges of temperature and magnetic field strength. The results revealed that both materials are valence fluctuating systems, in line with previous literature reports. Direct evidence for valence fluctuations was obtained by means of Ce LIII-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and Ce 3d core-level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental data were confronted with the results of ab initio calculations of the electronic band structures in both compounds.

Incipient superconductivity in TaB$_{2}$

Magnetic properties of TaB$_{2}$ were studied by means of DC and AC susceptibility measurements. It has been found that the compound becomes superconducting at T$_{c}$ = 9.5 K. From upper critical field measurements the superconducting parameters have been evaluated, which indicated that TaB$_{2}$ is a hard type-II superconductor. Possible reasons why superconductivity has not been discovered in previous studies are briefly discussed.
