Coexistence of low moment magnetism and superconductivity in tetragonal FeS and suppression of $T_\mathrm{c}$ under pressure

We report local probe ($μ$SR) measurements on the recently discovered tetragonal FeS superconductor which has been predicted to be electronically very similar to superconducting FeSe. Most remarkably, we find that low moment ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}μ_\mathrm{B})$ disordered magnetism with a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 20$ K microscopically coexists with bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{c}=4.3(1)$ K. From transverse field $μ$SR we obtain an in-plane penetration depth $λ_\mathrm{ab}(0)=223(2)$ nm for FeS. The temperature dependence of the corresponding superfluid density $λ_\mathrm{ab}^{-2}(T)$ indicates a fully gapped superconducting state and is consistent with a two gap s-wave model. Additionally, we find that the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}$ of FeS continuously decreases for hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa.

Role of heat and mechanical treatments in the fabrication of superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 ex-situ Powder-In-Tube tapes

Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the (K,Ba)Fe2As2 phase is attracting large interest within the scientific community interested in conductor developments. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities Jc of about 105 A/cm2 at fields up to more than 10 T have been obtained in powder in tube (PIT) processed wires and tapes. Here we explore the crucial points in the wire/tape fabrication by means of the ex-situ PIT method. We focus on scaling up processes which are crucial for the industrial fabrication. We analyzed the effects on the microstructure of the different heat and mechanical treatments. By an extensive microstructural analysis correlated with the transport properties we addressed the issues concerning the phase purity, the internal porosity and crack formation in the superconducting core region. Our best conductors with a filling factor of about 30 heat treated at 800 C exhibited Tc = 38 K the highest value measured in such kind of superconducting tape. The microstructure analysis shows clean and well connected grain boundaries but rather poor density: The measured Jc of about 3 x 10^4 A/cm2 in self-field is suppressed by less than a factor 7 at 7 T. Such not yet optimized Jc values can be accounted for by the reduced density while the moderate in-field suppression and a rather high n-factor confirm the high homogeneity and uniformity of these tapes.

Evidence for Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Broken Superconductivity in Locally Noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs

We report the magnetic and superconducting properties of locally noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs obtained by muon-spin-rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. Zero-field muSR reveals the occurrence of small spontaneous static magnetic fields with the onset of superconductivity. This finding suggests that the superconducting state of SrPtAs breaks time-reversal symmetry. The superfluid density as determined by transverse field muSR is nearly flat approaching T = 0 K proving the absence of extended nodes in the gap function. By symmetry, several superconducting states supporting time-reversal symmetry breaking in SrPtAs are allowed. Out of these, a dominantly d + id (chiral d-wave) order parameter is most consistent with our experimental data.

Multigap superconductivity in locally non-centrosymmetric SrPtAs: An As nuclear quadrupole resonance investigation

We report detailed $^{75}$As-NQR investigations of the locally non-centrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs. The spin-lattice relaxation studies prove weakly coupled multi-gap superconductivity. The Hebel-Slichter peak, a hallmark of conventional superconductivity, is strongly suppressed, which points to an unconventional superconducting state. The observed behavior excludes a superconducting order parameter with line nodes and is consistent with proposed $f$-wave and chiral $d$-wave order parameters.

Superconductivity and Crystal Structure of the Palladium-Iron-Arsenides Ca10(Fe1-xPdxAs)10Pd3As8

The palladium-iron-arsenides Ca10(Fe1-xPdxAs)10(Pd3As8) were synthesized by solid state methods and characterized by X-ray powder and single crystal diffraction. The triclinic crystal structure (space group P-1) is isotypic to the homologue platinum 1038 type superconductors with alternating FeAs4/4- and Pd3As8-layers, each separated by layers of calcium atoms. Iron is tetrahedral and palladium is planar coordinated by four arsenic atoms. As2-dimers (dAs-As = 250 pm) are present in the Pd3As8-layer. Even though each layer itself has a fourfold rotational symmetry, the shifted layer stacking causes the triclinic space group. Resistivity measurements of La-doped samples show the onset of superconductivity at 17 K and zero resistivity below 10 K. The magnetic shielding fraction is about 20 % at 3.5 K. 57Fe-Mössbauer spectra exhibit one absorption line and show no hint to magnetic ordering. The electronic structure is very similar to the known iron-arsenides with cylinder-like Fermi surfaces and partial nesting between hole- and electron-like sheets. Our results show that superconductivity in the palladium-iron-compounds is present but complicated by too high substitution of iron by palladium in the active FeAs-layers. Since the electronic preconditions are satisfied, we expect higher critical temperatures in Pd1038-compounds with lower or even without Pd-doping in the FeAs-layer.

Why $T_c$ of (CaFeAs)$_{10}$Pt$_{3.58}$As$_8$ is twice as high as (CaFe$_{0.95}$Pt$_{0.05}$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$

Recently discovered (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$ and (CaFeAs)$_{10}$Pt$_{4-y}$As$_8$ superconductors are very similar materials having the same elemental composition and structurally similar superconducting FeAs slabs. Yet the maximal critical temperature achieved by changing Pt concentration is approximately twice higher in the latter. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) we compare the electronic structure of their optimally doped compounds and find drastic differences. Our results highlight the sensitivity of critical temperature to the details of fermiology and point to the decisive role of band-edge singularities in the mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity.

Structural and magnetic phase transitions in triclinic Ca10(FeAs)10(Pt3As8)

We report the structural and magnetic phase transitions of triclinic Ca10(FeAs)10(Pt3As8). High-resolution X-ray powder diffraction reveals splitting of the in-plane (a,b) lattice parameters at Ts ~ 120 K. Platinum-doping weakens the distortion and shifts the transition temperature to 80 K in Ca10(Fe1-xPt_xAs)10(Pt3As8) with x = 0.03. muSR experiments show the onset of magnetic order near Ts and a broad magnetic phase transition. No symmetry breaking is associated to the structural transition in Ca10(FeAs)10(Pt3As8) in contrast to the other parent compounds of iron arsenide superconductors.

Local structural studies of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ using atomic pair distribution function analysis

Systematic local structural studies of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system are undertaken at room temperature using atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. The local structure of the Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is found to be well described by the long-range structure extracted from the diffraction experiments, but with anisotropic atomic vibrations of the constituent atoms ($U_{11}$ = $U_{22} \ne U_{33}$). The crystal unit cell parameters, the FeAs$_4$ tetrahedral angle and the pnictogen height above the Fe-plane are seen to show systematic evolution with K doping, underlining the importance of the structural changes, in addition to the charge doping, in determining the properties of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$.

Structural Phase Transitions in SrRh2As2

SrRh2As2 exhibits structural phase transitions reminiscent to those of BaFe2As2, but crystallizes with three polymorphs derived from the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure. The structure of α-SrRh2As2 is monoclinic with a = 421.2(1) pm, b = 1105.6(2) pm, c = 843.0(1) pm and β= 95° and was refined as a partially pseudo meroedric twin in the space group P21/c with R1 = 0.0928. β-SrRh2As2 crystallizes with a modulated structure in the (3+1) dimensional superspace group Fmmm(10γ)σ00 with the unit cell parameters a = 1114.4(3) pm, b = 574.4(2) pm and c = 611.5(2) pm and an incommensurable modulation vector q = (1, 0, 0.3311(4)). High temperature single crystal diffraction experiments confirm the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure for γ-SrRh2As2 above 350°C. Electronic band structure calculations indicate that the structural distortion in alpha-SrRh2As2 is caused by strong Rh-Rh bonding interactions and has no magnetic origin as suggested for isotypic BaFe2As2.

Correlation effects in Ni 3d states of LaNiPO

The electronic structure of the new superconducting material LaNiPO experimentally probed by soft X-ray spectroscopy and theoretically calculated by the combination of local density approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (LDA+DMFT) are compared herein. We have measured the Ni L2,3 X-ray emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectra which probe the occupied and unoccupied the Ni 3d states, respectively. In LaNiPO, the Ni 3d states are strongly renormalized by dynamical correlations and shifted about 1.5 eV lower in the valence band than the corresponding Fe 3d states in LaFeAsO. We further obtain a lower Hubbard band at -9 eV below the Fermi level in LaNiPO which bears striking resemblance to the lower Hubbard band in the correlated oxide NiO, while no such band is observed in LaFeAsO. These results are also supported by the intensity ratio between the transition metal L2 and L3 bands measured experimentally to be higher in LaNiPO than in LaFeAsO, indicating the presence of the stronger electron correlations in the Ni 3d states in LaNiPO in comparison with the Fe 3d states in LaFeAsO. These findings are in accordance with resonantly excited transition metal L3 X-ray emission spectra which probe occupied metal 3d-states and show the appearance of the lower Hubbard band in LaNiPO and NiO and its absence in LaFeAsO.

Electronic structure studies of BaFe2As2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the electronic structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is one of the parent compounds of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. ARPES measurements have been performed at 20 K and 300 K, corresponding to the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic phase and the tetragonal paramagnetic phase, respectively. Photon energies between 30 and 175 eV and polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the scattering plane have been used. Measurements of the Fermi surface yield two hole pockets at the $Γ$-point and an electron pocket at each of the X-points. The topology of the pockets has been concluded from the dispersion of the spectral weight as a function of binding energy. Changes in the spectral weight at the Fermi level upon variation of the polarization of the incident photons yield important information on the orbital character of the states near the Fermi level. No differences in the electronic structure between 20 and 300 K could be resolved. The results are compared with density functional theory band structure calculations for the tetragonal paramagnetic phase.

Magnetic and superconducting transitions in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ studied by specific heat

We report on specific heat measurements in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x\le 0.6$). For the underdoped sample with $x=0.2$ both the spin-density-wave transition at $T = 100$ K and the superconducting transition at 23 K can be identified. The electronic contribution to the specific heat in the superconducting state for concentrations in the vicinity of optimal doping $x=0.4$ can be well described by a full single-gap within the BCS limit.

New insight into the physics of iron pnictides from optical and penetration depth data

We report theoretical values for the unscreened plasma frequencies Omega_p of several Fe pnictides obtained from DFT based calculations within the LDA and compare them with experimental plasma frequencies obtained from reflectivity data. The sizable renormalization observed for all considered compounds points to the presence of many-body effects beyond the LDA. From the large empirical background dielectric constant of about 12-15, we estimate a large arsenic polarizability of about 9.5 +- 1.2 Angstroem^3 where the details depend on the polarizabilities of the remaining ions taken from the literature. This large polarizability can significantly reduce the value of the Coulomb repulsion U_d about 4 eV on iron known from iron oxides to a level of 2 eV or below. In general, this result points to rather strong polaronic effects as suggested by G.A. Sawatzky et al., in Refs. arXiv:0808.1390 and arXiv:0811.0214 (Berciu et al.). Possible consequences for the conditions of a formation of bipolarons are discussed, too. From the extrapolated muon spin rotation penetration depth data at T= 0 and the experimental Omega_p we estimate the total coupling constant lambda_tot for the el-boson interaction within the Eliashberg-theory adopting a single band approximation. For LaFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 a weak to intermediately strong coupling regime and a quasi-clean limit behaviour are found. For a pronounced multiband case we obtain a constraint for various intraband coupling constants which in principle allows for a sizable strong coupling in bands with either slow electrons or holes.

Phonon spectra in CaFe2As2 and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2: Measurement of the pressure and temperature dependence and comparison with ab-initio and shell model calculations

We report the pressure and temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=21 K) and the parent compound CaFe2As2, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe no significant change in the phonon spectrum for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 at 295 K up to pressures of 5 kbar. The phonon spectrum for CaFe2As2 shows softening of the low-energy modes by about 1 meV when decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 180 K. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states across the structural and anti-ferromagnetic phase transition at 172 K. These results, combined with our earlier temperature dependent phonon density of states measurements for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2, indicate that the softening of low-energy phonon modes in these compounds may be due to the interaction of phonons with electron or short-range spin fluctuations in the normal state of the superconducting compound as well as in the parent compound. The phonon spectra are analyzed with ab-initio and empirical model calculations giving partial densities of states and dispersion relations.
