Azimuthal correlations in photoproduction and deep inelastic ep\boldsymbol{ep} scattering at HERA

Collective behaviour of final-state hadrons, and multiparton interactions are studied in high-multiplicity epep scattering at a centre-of-mass energy s=318\sqrt{s}=318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations, as well as multiplicity, transverse momentum, and pseudorapidity distributions for charged-particle multiplicities Nch≥20N_{\textrm ch} \geq 20 are measured. The dependence of two-particle correlations on the virtuality of the exchanged photon shows a clear transition from photoproduction to neutral current deep inelastic scattering. For the multiplicities studied, neither the measurements in photoproduction processes nor those in neutral current deep inelastic scattering indicate significant collective behaviour of the kind observed in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Comparisons of PYTHIA predictions with the measurements in photoproduction strongly indicate the presence of multiparton interactions from hadronic fluctuations of the exchanged photon.

Exclusive J/ψψ Detection and Physics with ECCE

Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution MaM_{a}. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/ψψ and ΥΥ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/ψψ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S)σ_{ψ(2S )}/σ_{J/ψ(1S )} in exclusive photoproduction at HERA

The exclusive photoproduction reactions γp→J/ψ(1S)pγp \to J/ψ(1S) p and γp→ψ(2S)pγp \to ψ(2S) p have been measured at an epep centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373 pb−1^{-1}. The measurement was made in the kinematic range 30<W<18030 < W < 180 GeV, Q2<1Q^2 < 1 GeV2^2 and ∣t∣<1|t| < 1 GeV2^2, where WW is the photon--proton centre-of-mass energy, Q2Q^2 is the photon virtuality and tt is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were J/ψ(1S)→μ+μ−J/ψ(1S) \to μ^+ μ^-, ψ(2S)→μ+μ−ψ(2S) \to μ^+ μ^- and ψ(2S)→J/ψ(1S)π+π−ψ(2S) \to J/ψ(1S) π^+ π^- with subsequent decay J/ψ(1S)→μ+μ−J/ψ(1S) \to μ^+ μ^-. The ratio of the production cross sections, R=σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S)R = σ_{ψ(2S)} / σ_{J/ψ(1S)}, has been measured as a function of WW and ∣t∣|t| and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.
