Seesaw model in SO(10) with an upper limit on right-handed neutrino masses

In the framework of SO(10) gauge unification and the seesaw mechanism, we show that the upper bound on the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino MR3<3×1011M_{R_3} < 3 \times 10^{11} GeV, given by the Pati-Salam intermediate scale of B−LB-L spontaneous symmetry breaking, constrains the observables related to the left-handed light neutrino mass matrix. We assume such an upper limit on the masses of right-handed neutrinos and, as a first approximation, a Cabibbo form for the matrix VLV^L that diagonalizes the Dirac neutrino matrix mDm_D. Using the inverse seesaw formula, we show that our hypotheses imply a triangular relation in the complex plane of the light neutrino masses with the Majorana phases. We obtain normal hierarchy with an absolute scale for the light neutrino spectrum. Two regions are allowed for the lightest neutrino mass m1m_1 and for the Majorana phases, implying predictions for the neutrino mass measured in Tritium decay and for the double beta decay effective mass ∣<mee>∣|<m_{ee}>|.

Baryogenesis via leptogenesis from quark-lepton symmetry\par and a compact heavy NRN_R spectrum

By demanding a compact spectrum for the right-handed neutrinos and an approximate quark-lepton symmetry inspired from SO(10) gauge unification (assuming a Dirac neutrino mass matrix close to the up quark mass matrix), we construct a {\it fine tuning} scenario for baryogenesis via leptogenesis. We find two solutions with a normal hierarchy, with the lightest neutrino mass m1m_1 different from zero, providing an absolute scale for the spectrum. In the approximations of the model, there are three independent CP phases : δLδ_L (that we take of the order of the quark Kobayashi-Maskawa phase) and the two light neutrino Majorana phases αα and ββ. A main conclusion is that, although this general scheme is rather flexible, in some regions of parameter space we find that the necessary baryogenesis with its sign is given in terms of the δLδ_L phase alone. The light Majorana phases can also be computed and turn out to be close of π/2π/2 or small. Moreover, SO(10) breaks down to the Pati-Salam group SU(4)×SU(2)×SU(2)SU(4) \times SU(2) \times SU(2) at the expected natural intermediate scale of about 1010−1011 GeV10^{10}-10^{11}\ GeV. A prediction is done for the effective mass in (ββ)0ν(ββ)_{0ν} decay, the νeν_e mass and the sum of all light neutrino masses.

Seesaw and leptogenesis: a triangular ansatz

A triangular ansatz for the seesaw mechanism and baryogenesis via leptogenesis is explored. In a basis where both the charged lepton and the Majorana mass matrix are diagonal, the Dirac mass matrix can generally be written as the product of a unitary times a triangular matrix. We assume the unitary matrix to be the identity and then an upper triangular Dirac matrix. Constraints from bilarge lepton mixing and leptogenesis are studied.

Bounds for the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino in SO(10) theories

By relating the Dirac neutrino mass matrix to the mass of the charged fermions and assuming that the product of the masses of the two lightest left-handed neutrinos is of the order of Δmsol2Δm^2_{sol}, we derive, within a leptogenesis scenario, a range of values for the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino, centered around the scale of B−LB-L symmetry breaking in the SO(10) theory with Pati-Salam intermediate symmetry.

Quark mass matrices and observable quantities

A nearly historical account of quark mass matrix models is given, and the structure of quark mass matrices in the Standard Model is studied. For a minimal parameter basis suggested earlier, where MuM_u is diagonal and Md11M_{d11}, Md13M_{d13}, Md31M_{d31} are zero, the dependence of mass matrices on the CP violating phase δδ of VCKMV_{CKM} is reported: all parameters are almost independent, except Md22M_{d22} and Md23M_{d23}, and the equality ∣Md22∣=Md23|M_{d22}|=M_{d23} is obtained for a value of δδ very close to the value which is favoured by experiments. Moreover, on this basis, Md12≃Md21M_{d12} \simeq M_{d21} and Md33≃2Md32M_{d33} \simeq 2M_{d32}. Some comments on mass matrices in left-right symmetric models are added.

Relation between quark masses and weak mixings

Simple transformation formulas between fermion matrices and observables, and numerical values of quark matrices, are obtained on a particular weak basis with one quark matrix diagonal and the other with vanishing elements 1-1, 1-3 and 3-1, and with only the element 2-2 complex. When we choose MuM_u diagonal, then MdM_d shows intriguing numerical properties which suggest a four parameter description of it, which implies Vus≃md/msV_{us}\simeq \sqrt{m_d/m_s}, Vcb≃(3/5)(ms/mb)V_{cb}\simeq (3/\sqrt{5})(m_s/m_b) and Vub≃(1/5)(mdms/mb)V_{ub}\simeq (1/\sqrt{5})(\sqrt{m_d m_s}/m_b). Few comments on mass-mixing relations are added.

Fermion Mass Matrices in term of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix and Mass Eigenvalues

A parameter free, model independent analysis of quark mass matrices is carried out. We find a representation in terms of a diagonal mass matrix for the down (up) quarks and a suitable matrix for the up (down) quarks, such that the mass parameters only depend on the six quark masses and the three angles and phase appearing in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. The results found may also be applied to the Dirac mass matrices of the leptons.
