Growth of perturbations to the peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation,

Peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation are revisited. Linearized evolution equations are derived for perturbations to the peaked periodic waves and linearized instability is proven both in $H^1$ and $W^{1,\infty}$ norms. Dynamics of perturbations in $H^1$ is related to the existence of two conserved quantities and is bounded in the full nonlinear system due to these conserved quantities. On the other hand, perturbations to the peaked periodic wave grow in $W^{1,\infty}$ norm and may blow up in a finite time in the nonlinear evolution of the Camassa-Holm equation.

Dimer with gain and loss: Integrability and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry restoration

A $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger dimer is a two-site discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with one site losing and the other one gaining energy at the same rate. In this paper, two four-parameter families of cubic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimers are constructed as gain-loss extensions of their conservative, Hamiltonian, counterparts. We prove that all these damped-driven equations define completely integrable Hamiltonian systems. The second aim of our study is to identify nonlinearities that give rise to the spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry restoration. When the symmetry of the underlying linear dimer is broken and an unstable small perturbation starts to grow, the nonlinear coupling of the required type diverts progressively large amounts of energy from the gaining to the losing site. As a result, the exponential growth is saturated and all trajectories remain trapped in a finite part of the phase space regardless of the value of the gain-loss coefficient.

When Does Linear Stability Not Exclude Nonlinear Instability ?

We describe a mechanism that results in the nonlinear instability of stationary states even in the case where the stationary states are linearly stable. This instability is due to the nonlinearity-induced coupling of the linearization's internal modes of negative energy with the wave continuum. In a broad class of nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equations considered, the presence of such internal modes guarantees the nonlinear instability of the stationary states in the evolution dynamics. To corroborate this idea, we explore three prototypical case examples: (a) an anti-symmetric soliton in a double-well potential, (b) a twisted localized mode in a one-dimensional lattice with cubic nonlinearity, and (c) a discrete vortex in a two-dimensional saturable lattice. In all cases, we observe a weak nonlinear instability, despite the linear stability of the respective states.

Finite-time singularities in the dynamical evolution of contact lines

We study finite-time singularities in the linear advection-diffusion equation with a variable speed on a semi-infinite line. The variable speed is determined by an additional condition at the boundary, which models the dynamics of a contact line of a hydrodynamic flow at a 180 contact angle. Using apriori energy estimates, we derive conditions on variable speed that guarantee that a sufficiently smooth solution of the linear advection--diffusion equation blows up in a finite time. Using the class of self-similar solutions to the linear advection-diffusion equation, we find the blow-up rate of singularity formation. This blow-up rate does not agree with previous numerical simulations of the model problem.

Short-wave transverse instabilities of line solitons of the 2-D hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We prove that line solitons of the two-dimensional hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger equation are unstable with respect to transverse perturbations of arbitrarily small periods, {\em i.e.}, short waves. The analysis is based on the construction of Jost functions for the continuous spectrum of Schrödinger operators, the Sommerfeld radiation conditions, and the Lyapunov--Schmidt decomposition. Precise asymptotic expressions for the instability growth rate are derived in the limit of short periods.

Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution of the Cauchy problem for the Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation

We consider the initial-value problem for the regularized Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation in the class of periodic functions. Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution, given in terms of two counter-propagating waves satisfying the uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, is examined. We prove analytically and illustrate numerically that the improved accuracy of the solution can be achieved at the time scales of the Ostrovsky equation if solutions of the linearized Ostrovsky equations are incorporated into the asymptotic solution. Compared to the previous literature, we show that the approximation error can be controlled in the energy space of periodic functions and the nonzero mean values of the periodic functions can be naturally incorporated in the justification analysis.

Discrete solitons in PT-symmetric lattices

We prove existence of discrete solitons in infinite parity-time (PT-) symmetric lattices by means of analytical continuation from the anticontinuum limit. The energy balance between dissipation and gain implies that in the anticontinuum limit the solitons are constructed from elementary PT-symmetric blocks such as dimers, quadrimers, or more general oligomers. We consider in detail a chain of coupled dimers, analyze bifurcations of discrete solitons from the anticontinuum limit and show that the solitons are stable in a sufficiently large region of the lattice parameters. The generalization of the approach is illustrated on two examples of networks of quadrimers, for which stable discrete solitons are also found.

Matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with attractive interatomic interactions. We use a multiscale expansion method to identify solution families for chemical potentials in the semi-infinite gap of the linear energy spectrum. Depending on the linear and spin-orbit coupling strengths, the solitons may resemble either standard bright nonlinear Schrödinger solitons or exhibit a modulated density profile, reminiscent of the stripe phase of SO-coupled repulsive BECs. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with our analytical findings, and demonstrate the potential robustness of such solitons for experimentally relevant conditions through stability analysis and direct numerical simulations.

PT-symmetric lattices with spatially extended gain/loss are generically unstable

We illustrate, through a series of prototypical examples, that linear parity-time (PT) symmetric lattices with extended gain/loss profiles are generically unstable, for any non-zero value of the gain/loss coefficient. Our examples include a parabolic real potential with a linear imaginary part and the cases of no real and constant or linear imaginary potentials. On the other hand, this instability can be avoided and the spectrum can be real for localized or compact PT-symmetric potentials. The linear lattices are analyzed through discrete Fourier transform techniques complemented by numerical computations.

Symmetry-breaking bifurcation in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with symmetric potentials

We consider the focusing (attractive) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an external, symmetric potential which vanishes at infinity and supports a linear bound state. We prove that the symmetric, nonlinear ground states must undergo a symmetry breaking bifurcation if the potential has a non-degenerate local maxima at zero. Under a generic assumption we show that the bifurcation is either subcritical or supercritical pitchfork. In the particular case of double-well potentials with large separation, the power of nonlinearity determines the subcritical or supercritical character of the bifurcation. The results are obtained from a careful analysis of the spectral properties of the ground states at both small and large values for the corresponding eigenvalue parameter. We employ a novel technique combining concentration--compactness and spectral properties of linearized Schrödinger type operators to show that the symmetric ground states can either be uniquely continued for the entire interval of the eigenvalue parameter or they undergo a symmetry--breaking pitchfork bifurcation due to the second eigenvalue of the linearized operator crossing zero. In addition we prove the appropriate scaling for the stationary states in the limit of large values of the eigenvalue parameter. The scaling and our novel technique imply that all ground states at large eigenvalues must be localized near a critical point of the potential and bifurcate from the soliton of the focusing NLS equation without potential localized at the same point. The theoretical results are illustrated numerically for a double-well potential obtained after the splitting of a single-well potential. We compare the cases before and after the splitting, and numerically investigate bifurcation and stability properties of the ground states which are beyond the reach of our theoretical tools.

Distribution of eigenfrequencies for oscillations of the ground state in the Thomas--Fermi limit

In this work, we present a systematic derivation of the distribution of eigenfrequencies for oscillations of the ground state of a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit. Our calculations are performed in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional settings. Connections with the earlier work of Stringari, with numerical computations, and with theoretical expectations for invariant frequencies based on symmetry principles are also given.

Excited states in the Thomas-Fermi limit: a variational approach

Excited states of Bose--Einstein condensates are considered in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with repulsive inter-atomic interactions and a harmonic potential. The relative dynamics of dark solitons (density dips on the localized condensate) with respect to the harmonic potential and to each other is approximated using the averaged Lagrangian method. This permits a complete characterization of the equilibrium positions of the dark solitons as a function of the chemical potential parameter. It also yields an analytical handle on the oscillation frequencies of dark solitons around such equilibria. The asymptotic predictions are generalized for an arbitrary number of dark solitons and are corroborated by numerical computations for 2- and 3-soliton configurations.
