Low-temperature crystal and magnetic structure of $α$-RuCl3

Single crystals of the Kitaev spin-liquid candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ have been studied to determine low-temperature bulk properties, structure and the magnetic ground state. Refinements of x-ray diffraction data show that the low temperature crystal structure is described by space group $C2/m$ with a nearly-perfect honeycomb lattice exhibiting less than 0.2 \% in-plane distortion. The as-grown single crystals exhibit only one sharp magnetic transition at $T_{N}$ = 7~K. The magnetic order below this temperature exhibits a propagation vector of $k$ = (0, 1, 1/3), which coincides with a 3-layer stacking of the $C2/m$ unit cells. Magnetic transitions at higher temperatures up to 14~K can be introduced by deformations of the crystal that result in regions in the crystal with a 2-layer stacking sequence. The best fit symmetry allowed magnetic structure of the as-grown crystals shows that the spins lie in the $ac$-plane, with a zigzag configuration in each honeycomb layer. The three layer repeat out-of-plane structure can be refined as a 120$^o$ spiral order or a collinear structure with spin direction 35$^o$ away from the $a$-axis. The collinear spin configuration yields a slightly better fit and also is physically preferred. The average ordered moment in either structure is less than 0.45(5) $μ_B$ per Ru$^{3+}$ ion.

Time-dependent correlations in quantum magnets at finite temperature

In this article we investigate the time dependence of the gap mode of copper nitrate at various temperatures. We combine state-of-the-art theoretical calculations with high precision neutron resonance spin-echo measurements to understand the anomalous decoherence effects found previously in this material. It is shown that the time domain offers a complementary view on this phenomenon, which allows us to directly compare experimental data and theoretical predictions without the need of further intensive data analysis, such as (de)convolution.

Analytical theory for proton correlations in common water ice $I_h$

We provide a fully analytical microscopic theory for the proton correlations in water ice $I_h$. We compute the full diffuse elastic neutron scattering structure factor, which we find to be in excellent quantitative agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. It is also in remarkable qualitative agreement with experiment, in the absence of any fitting parameters. Our theory thus provides a tractable analytical starting point to account for more delicate features of the proton correlations in water ice. In addition, it directly determines an effective field theory of water ice as a topological phase.

Investigations of the effect of nonmagnetic Ca substitution for magnetic Dy on spin-freezing in Dy2Ti2O7

Physical properties of partially Ca substituted hole-doped Dy2Ti2O7 have been investigated by ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H) and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements on Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7. The spin-ice system Dy2Ti2O7 exhibits a spin-glass type freezing behavior near 16 K. Our frequency dependent χ_ac(T) data of Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7 show that the spin-freezing behavior is significantly influenced by Ca substitution. The effect of partial nonmagnetic Ca2+ substitution for magnetic Dy3+ is similar to the previous study on nonmagnetic isovalent Y3+ substituted Dy2-xYxTi2O7 (for low levels of dilution), however the suppression of spin-freezing behavior is substantially stronger for Ca than Y. The Cole-Cole plot analysis reveals semicircular character and a single relaxation mode in Dy1.8Ca0.2Ti2O7 as for Dy2Ti2O7. No noticeable change in the insulating behavior of Dy2Ti2O7 results from the holes produced by 10% Ca2+ substitution for Dy3+ ions.

Proximate Kitaev Quantum Spin Liquid Behaviour in α-RuCl$_3$

Topological states of matter such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are of great interest because of their remarkable predicted properties including protection of quantum information and the emergence of Majorana fermions. Such QSLs, however, have proven difficult to identify experimentally. The most promising approach is to study their exotic nature via the wave-vector and intensity dependence of their dynamical response in neutron scattering. A major search has centered on iridate materials which are proposed to realize the celebrated Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice - a prototypical topological QSL system in two dimensions (2D). The difficulties of iridium for neutron measurements have, however, impeded progress significantly. Here we provide experimental evidence that a material based on ruthenium, α-RuCl$_3$ realizes the same Kitaev physics but is highly amenable to neutron investigation. Our measurements confirm the requisite strong spin-orbit coupling, and a low temperature magnetic order that matches the predicted phase proximate to the QSL. We also show that stacking faults, inherent to the highly 2D nature of the material, readily explain some puzzling results to date. Measurements of the dynamical response functions, especially at energies and temperatures above that where interlayer effects are manifest, are naturally accounted for in terms of deconfinement physics expected for QSLs. Via a comparison to the recently calculated dynamics from gauge flux excitations and Majorana fermions of the pure Kitaev model we propose α-RuCl$_3$ as the prime candidate for experimental realization of fractionalized Kitaev physics.

Luttinger-Liquid Behavior in the Alternating Spin-Chain System Copper Nitrate

We determine the phase diagram of copper nitrate Cu(NO$_3$)$_2\cdot$2.5D$_2$O in the context of quantum phase transitions and novel states of matter. We establish this compound as an ideal candidate to study quasi-1D Luttinger liquids, 3D Bose-Einstein-Condensation of triplons, and the crossover between 1D and 3D physics. Magnetocaloric effect, magnetization, and neutron scattering data provide clear evidence for transitions into a Luttinger liquid regime and a 3D long-range ordered phase as function of field and temperature. Theoretical simulations of this model material allow us to fully establish the phase diagram and to discuss it in the context of dimerized spin systems.

Lifetimes of antiferromagnetic magnons in two and three dimensions: experiment, theory, and numerics

A high-resolution neutron spectroscopic technique is used to measure momentum-resolved magnon lifetimes in the prototypical two- and three-dimensional antiferromagnets Rb2MnF4 and MnF2, over the full Brillouin zone and a wide range of temperatures. We rederived theories of the lifetime resulting from magnon-magnon scattering, thereby broadening their applicability beyond asymptotically small regions of wavevector and temperature. Corresponding computations, combined with a small contribution reflecting collisions with domain boundaries, yield excellent quantitative agreement with the data.

Magnon-mediated thermal transport in antiferromagnets: the link to momentum-resolved magnon lifetime data

Transport currents in solids decay through collisions of quasiparticles with each other and with defects or boundaries. Since information about collisional lifetimes is difficult to obtain, most calculations of transport properties rely on parameters that are not known independently. Here, we use magnon lifetime data for the two-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4 to calculate the magnon-mediated thermal conductivity without any adjustable parameters, thereby quantifying the influence of scattering from domain boundaries on transport. Related strategies have the potential to enhance our understanding of thermal transport by electronic and phononic quasiparticles greatly.

Multispinon continua at zero and finite temperature in a near-ideal Heisenberg chain

The space- and time-dependent response of many-body quantum systems is the most informative aspect of their emergent behaviour. The dynamical structure factor, experimentally measurable using neutron scattering, can map this response in wavevector and energy with great detail, allowing theories to be quantitatively tested to high accuracy. Here, we present a comparison between neutron scattering measurements on the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3, and recent state-of-the-art theoretical methods based on integrability and density matrix renormalization group simulations. The unprecedented quantitative agreement shows that precise descriptions of strongly correlated states at all distance, time and temperature scales are now possible, and highlights the need to apply these novel techniques to other problems in low-dimensional magnetism.

Quantum criticality in an Ising chain: experimental evidence for emergent E8 symmetry

Quantum phase transitions take place between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Near the transition point, exotic quantum symmetries can emerge that govern the excitation spectrum of the system. A symmetry described by the E8 Lie group with a spectrum of 8 particles was long predicted to appear near the critical point of an Ising chain. We realize this system experimentally by tuning the quasi-one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet CoNb2O6 through its critical point using strong transverse magnetic fields. The spin excitations are observed to change character from pairs of kinks in the ordered phase to spin-flips in the paramagnetic phase. Just below the critical field, the spin dynamics shows a fine structure with two sharp modes at low energies, in a ratio that approaches the golden mean as predicted for the first two meson particles of the E8 spectrum. Our results demonstrate the power of symmetry to describe complex quantum behaviours.

The dynamics of azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$ in a magnetic field as determined by neutron scattering

Azurite, a natural mineral made up of CuO chains, is also an intriguing spin-1/2 quantum magnet. There has been much debate as to the 1-dimensional (1D) nature of this material by theorists and experimentalists alike. The focus of this debate lies in the interactions between Cu-ions within the antiferromagnetically ordered state below 1.9 K. We present high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering data which highlight the complexity of the magnetic ground state of azurite. The application of magnetic fields and temperatures were used to probe the excitations revealing important information about the dynamics in this system. From this we are able to conclude that the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain model is not sufficient to describe the dynamics in azurite. Instead additional coupling including interchain interactions and an anisotropic staggered field are necessary to fully model the observed excitations.

The magnetic and crystal structure of azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$ as determined by neutron diffraction

Here we present neutron diffraction results on the mineral azurite. We have found that the crystal structure of azurite can be described in the space group $P2_1$ which is the next lower symmetric group of $P2_1/c$ as found in earlier work. This small change in symmetry does not greatly influence the lattice parameters or atomic fractional coordinates which are presented here for single crystal diffraction refinements. The ordered magnetic moment structure of this material has been determined and is comprised of two inequivalent magnetic moments on copper sites of magnitude 0.68(1) and 0.25(1) $μ_{B}$. This result is discussed in terms of the anisotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. It is found that the system is likely governed by one-dimensional behaviour despite the long-range ordered ground state. We also highlight the significance of strain in this material which is strongly coupled to the magnetism.

Dirac Strings and Magnetic Monopoles in Spin Ice Dy2Ti2O7

While sources of magnetic fields - magnetic monopoles - have so far proven elusive as elementary particles, several scenarios have been proposed recently in condensed matter physics of emergent quasiparticles resembling monopoles. A particularly simple proposition pertains to spin ice on the highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice. The spin ice state is argued to be well-described by networks of aligned dipoles resembling solenoidal tubes - classical, and observable, versions of a Dirac string. Where these tubes end, the resulting defect looks like a magnetic monopole. We demonstrate, by diffuse neutron scattering, the presence of such strings in the spin-ice Dy2Ti2O7. This is achieved by applying a symmetry-breaking magnetic field with which we can manipulate density and orientation of the strings. In turn, heat capacity is described by a gas of magnetic monopoles interacting via a magnetic Coulomb interaction.

Magnetoelastic and structural properties of azurite Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 from neutron scattering and muon spin rotation

Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, has been considered an ideal example of a one-dimensional (1D) diamond chain antiferromagnet. Early studies of this material imply the presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N \sim 1.9$ K while magnetization measurements have revealed a 1/3 magnetization plateau. Until now, no corroborating neutron scattering results have been published to confirm the ordered magnetic moment structure. We present recent neutron diffraction results which reveal the presence of commensurate magnetic order in azurite which coexists with significant magnetoelastic strain. The latter of these effects may indicate the presence of spin frustration in zero applied magnetic field. Muon spin rotation, $μ$SR, reveals an onset of short-range order below 3K and confirms long-range order below $T_N$.

Vertex corrections in the dynamic structure factor in spin ladders

We combine the results of perturbative continuous unitary transformations with a mean-field calculation to determine the evolution of the single-mode, i.e., one-triplon, contribution to the dynamic structure factor of a two-leg $S=1/2$ ladder on increasing temperature from zero to a finite value. The temperature dependence is induced by two effects: (i) no triplon can be excited on a rung where a thermally activated triplon is present; (ii) conditional excitation processes take place if a thermally activated triplon is present. Both effects diminish the one-triplon spectral weight upon heating. It is shown that the second effect is the dominant vertex correction in the calculation of the dynamic structure factor. The matrix elements describing the conditional triplon excitation in the two-leg Heisenberg ladder with additional four-spin ring exchange are calculated perturbatively up to order 9. The calculated results are compared to those of an inelastic neutron scattering experiment on the cuprate-ladder compound La$_{4}$Sr$_{10}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ showing convincing agreement for established values of the exchange constants.

Magnetic Excitation Spectrum of the Square Lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet K2V3O8

We have explored the magnetic excitation spectrum of the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, K2V3O8 using both triple-axis and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The long-wavelength spin waves are consistent with the previously determined Hamiltonian for this material. A small energy gap of 72+/-9 micro-eV is observed at the antiferromagnetic zone center and the near-neighbor exchange constant is determined to be 1.08+/-0.03 meV. A finite ferromagnetic interplanar coupling is observed along the crystallographic c-axis with a magnitude of Jc=-0.0036+/-0.006 meV. However, upon approaching the zone boundary, the observed excitation spectrum deviates significantly from the expectation of linear spin wave theory resulting in split modes at the (pi/2,pi/2) zone boundary point. The effects of magnon-phonon interaction, orbital degrees of freedom, multimagnon scattering, and dilution/site randomness are considered in the context of the mode splitting. Unfortunately, no fully satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon is found and further theoretical and experimental work is needed.

Magnetic excitations in {Mo72Fe30}

We report cold-neutron inelastic neutron scattering measurements on deuterated samples of the giant polyoxomolybdate magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}. The 30 s = 5/2 Fe+3 ions occupy the vertices of an icosidodecahedron, and interact via antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling. The measurements reveal a band of magnetic excitations near E ~ 0.6 meV. The spectrum broadens and shifts to lower energy as the temperature is increased, and also is strongly affected by magnetic fields. The results can be interpreted within the context of an effective three-sublattice spin Hamiltonian.

Quantum criticality and universal scaling of a quantum antiferromagnet

Quantum effects dominate the behaviour of many diverse materials. Of particular current interest are those systems in the vicinity of a quantum critical point (QCP). Their physical properties are predicted to reflect those of the nearby QCP with universal features independent of the microscopic details. The prototypical QCP is the Luttinger liquid (LL) which is of relevance to many quasi-one-dimensional materials. The magnetic material KCuF3 realizes an array of weakly-coupled spin chains (or LLs) and thus lies close to but not exactly at the Luttinger liquid quantum critical point. By using inelastic neutron scattering we have collected a complete data set of the magnetic correlations of KCuF3 as a function of momentum, energy, and temperature. The LL description is found to be valid over an extensive range of these parameters, and departures from this behaviour at high and low energies and temperatures have been identified and explained.

A neutron scattering study of two-magnon states in the quantum magnet copper nitrate

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O). Using inelastic neutron scattering we have measured the one and two magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal. The data are in excellent agreement with a perturbative expansion of the alternating Heisenberg Hamiltonian from the strongly dimerized limit. The expansion predicts a two-magnon bound state for q ~ (2n+1)pi*d which is consistent with the neutron scattering data.

Excitation Spectrum and Superexchange Pathways in the Spin Dimer VODPO_4 . 1/2 D_2O

Magnetic excitations have been investigated in the spin dimer material VODPO_4 \cdot 1/2 D_2O using inelastic neutron scattering. A dispersionless magnetic mode was observed at an energy of 7.81(4) meV. The wavevector dependence of the scattering intensityfrom this mode is consistent with the excitation of isolated V^{4+} spin dimers with a V-V separation of 4.43(7) Å. This result is unexpected since the V-V pair previously thought to constitute themagnetic dimer has a separation of 3.09 Å. We identify an alternative V-V pair as the likely magnetic dimer, which involves superexchange pathways through a covalently bonded PO_4 group. This surprising result casts doubt on the interpretation of (VO)_2P_2O_7 as a spin ladder.

Magnetic Excitations in the S=1/2 Alternating Chain Compound (VO)_2P_2O_7

Magnetic excitations in an array of (VO)_2P_2O_7 single crystals have been measured using inelastic neutron scattering. Until now, (VO)_2P_2O_7 has been thought of as a two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladder with chains running in the a-direction. The present results show unequivocally that (VO)_2P_2O_7 is best described as an alternating spin-chain directed along the crystallographic b-direction. In addition to the expected magnon with magnetic zone-center energy gap Δ= 3.1 meV, a second excitation is observed at an energy just below 2Δ. The higher mode may be a triplet two-magnon bound state.
