An Overview of Machine Learning Techniques for Radiowave Propagation Modeling

We give an overview of recent developments in the modeling of radiowave propagation, based on machine learning algorithms. We identify the input and output specification and the architecture of the model as the main challenges associated with machine learning-driven propagation models. Relevant papers are discussed and categorized based on their approach to each of these challenges. Emphasis is given on presenting the prospects and open problems in this promising and rapidly evolving area.

FDTD Modeling of Periodic Structures: A Review

This paper reviews the state of the art of periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) in Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations. The mathematical principles and 3D FDTD implementation details are systematically outlined. Techniques for extracting scattering parameters, Brillouin diagrams and attenuation constants are presented, along with the Array Scanning Method (ASM) used to model the interaction of non-periodic sources with periodic structures. Through these techniques, the robustness, utility and efficiency of PBCs are demonstrated and a unified view of the various approaches to the FDTD implementation of PBCs is presented.

Structure-Preserving Reduction of Finite-Difference Time-Domain Equations with Controllable Stability Beyond the CFL Limit

The timestep of the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD) is constrained by the stability limit known as the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition. This limit can make FDTD simulations quite time consuming for structures containing small geometrical details. Several methods have been proposed in the literature to extend the CFL limit, including implicit FDTD methods and filtering techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which combines model order reduction and a perturbation algorithm to accelerate FDTD simulations beyond the CFL barrier. We compare the proposed algorithm against existing implicit and explicit CFL extension techniques, demonstrating increased accuracy and performance on a large number of test cases, including resonant cavities, a waveguide structure, a focusing metascreen and a microstrip filter.
