Einstein, Planck and Vera Rubin: relevant encounters between the Cosmological and the Quantum Worlds

In Cosmology and in Fundamental Physics there is a crucial question like: where the elusive substance that we call Dark Matter is hidden in the Universe and what is it made of?, that, even after 40 years from the Vera Rubin seminal discovery does not have a proper answer. Actually, the more we have investigated, the more this issue has become strongly entangled with aspects that go beyond the established Quantum Physics, the Standard Model of Elementary particles and the General Relativity and related to processes like the Inflation, the accelerated expansion of the Universe and High Energy Phenomena around compact objects. Even Quantum Gravity and very exotic DM particle candidates may play a role in framing the Dark Matter mystery that seems to be accomplice of new unknown Physics. Observations and experiments have clearly indicated that the above phenomenon cannot be considered as already theoretically framed, as hoped for decades. The Special Topic to which this review belongs wants to penetrate this newly realized mystery from different angles, including that of a contamination of different fields of Physics apparently unrelated. We show with the works of this ST that this contamination is able to guide us into the required new Physics. This review wants to provide a good number of these "paths or contamination" beyond/among the three worlds above; in most of the cases, the results presented here open a direct link with the multi-scale dark matter phenomenon, enlightening some of its important aspects. Also in the remaining cases, possible interesting contacts emerges.

Archimedes: a feasibility study of an experiment to weigh the electromagnetic vacuum

Archimedes is a feasibility study of a future experiment to ascertain the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. The experiment should measure the force that the earth's gravitational field exerts on a Casimir cavity by using a small force detector. Here we analyse the main parameters of the experiment and we present its conceptual scheme, which overcomes in principle the most critical problems.

The Archimedes experiment

Archimedes is an INFN-funded pathfinder experiment aimed at verifying the feasibility of measuring the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. The final experiment will measure the force exerted by the gravitational field on a Casimir cavity whose vacuum energy is modulated with a superconductive transition, by using a balance as a small force detector. Archimedes is a two-year project devoted to test the most critical experimental aspects, in particular the balance resonance frequency and quality factor, the thermal modulation efficiency and the superconductive sample realization.

Deformations of three-dimensional metrics

We examine three-dimensional metric deformations based on a tetrad transformation through the action the matrices of scalar fields. We describe by this approach to deformation the results obtained by Coll et al. in [1], where it is stated that any three--dimensional metric was locally obtained as a deformation of a constant curvature metric parameterized by a 2--form.To this aim, we construct the corresponding deforming matrices and provide their classification according to the properties of the scalar $σ$ and of the vector $\mathbf{s}$ used in [1] to deform the initial metric. The resulting causal structure of the deformed geometries is examined, too. Finally we apply our results to a spherically symmetric three geometry and to a space sector of Kerr metric.

The Archimedes project: a feasibility study for weighing the vacuum energy

Archimedes is a feasibility study to a future experiment to ascertain the interaction of vacuum fluctuations with gravity. The future experiment should measure the force that the Earth's gravitational field exerts on a Casimir cavity by using a balance as the small force detector. The Archimedes experiment analyses the important parameters in view of the final measurement and experimentally explores solutions to the most critical problems.

Quantization of Black Holes entropy and its cosmological consequences

Starting from a quantization relation for primordial extremal black holes with electric and magnetic charges, it is shown that their entropy is quantized. Furthermore the energy levels spacing for such black holes is derived as a function of the level number $n$, appearing in the quantization relation. Some interesting cosmological consequences are presented for small values of $n$. By producing a mismatch between the mass and the charge the black hole temperature is derived and its behavior investigated. Finally extending the quantum relation to Schwarzschild black holes their temperature is found to be in agreement with the Hawking temperature and a simple interpretation of the microscopic degrees of freedom of the black holes is given.

A square-torsion modification of Einstein-Cartan theory

In the present paper we consider a theory of gravity in which not only curvature but also torsion is explicitly present in the Lagrangian, both with their own coupling constant. In particular, we discuss the couplings to Dirac fields and spin fluids: in the case of Dirac fields, we discuss how in our approach, the Dirac self-interactions depend on the coupling constant as a parameter that may even make these non-linearities manifest at subatomic scales, showing different applications according to the value of the parameter we have assigned; in the case of spin fluids, we discuss FLRW cosmological models arising from the proposed theory.

Peierls Brackets in Field Theory

Peierls brackets are part of the space-time approach to quantum field theory, and provide a Poisson bracket which, being defined for pairs of observables which are group invariant, is group invariant by construction. It is therefore well suited for combining the use of Poisson brackets and the full diffeomorphism group in general relativity. The present paper provides an introduction to the topic, with applications to gauge field theory.

Cosmological Black Holes

In this paper we propose a model for the formation of the cosmological voids. We show that cosmological voids can form directly after the collapse of extremely large wavelength perturbations into low-density black holes or cosmological black holes (CBH). Consequently the voids are formed by the comoving expansion of the matter that surrounds the collapsed perturbation. It follows that the universe evolves, in first approximation, according to the Einstein-Straus cosmological model. We discuss finally the possibility to detect the presence of these black holes through their weak and strong lensing effects and their influence on the cosmic background radiation.

New Supplementary Conditions for a Non-Linear Field Theory: General Relativity

The Einstein theory of general relativity provides a peculiar example of classical field theory ruled by non-linear partial differential equations. A number of supplementary conditions (more frequently called gauge conditions) have also been considered in the literature. In the present paper, starting from the de Donder gauge, which is not conformally invariant but is the gravitational counterpart of the Lorenz gauge, we consider, led by geometric structures on vector bundles, a new family of gauges in general relativity, which involve fifth-order covariant derivatives of metric perturbations. A review of recent results by the authors is presented: restrictions on the general form of the metric on the vector bundle of symmetric rank-two tensor fields over space-time; admissibility of such gauges in the case of linearized theory about flat Euclidean space; generalization to a suitable class of curved Riemannian backgrounds, by solving an integral equation. Eventually, the applications to Euclidean quantum gravity are discussed.

Boundary Terms in Complex General Relativity

A recent analysis of real general relativity based on multisymplectic techniques has shown that boundary terms may occur in the constraint equations, unless some boundary conditions are imposed. This paper studies the corresponding form of such boundary terms in complex general relativity, where space-time is a four-complex-dimensional complex-Riemannian manifold. A complex Ricci-flat space-time is recovered providing some boundary conditions are imposed on two-complex-dimensional surfaces. One then finds that the holomorphic multimomenta should vanish on an arbitrary three-complex-dimensional surface, to avoid having restrictions at this surface on the spinor fields which express the invariance of the theory under holomorphic coordinate transformations. The Hamiltonian constraint of real general relativity is then replaced by a geometric structure linear in the holomorphic multimomenta, and a link with twistor theory is found. Moreover, a deep relation emerges between complex space-times which are not anti-self-dual and two-complex-dimensional surfaces which are not totally null.
