The Special Tree Number

Define the special tree number, denoted st\mathfrak{st}, to be the least size of a tree of height ω1ω_1 which is neither special nor has a cofinal branch. This cardinal had previously been studied in the context of fragments of MA\mathsf{MA} but in this paper we look at its relation to other, more typical, cardinal characteristics. Classical facts imply that ℵ1≤st≤2ℵ0\aleph_1 \leq \mathfrak{st} \leq 2^{\aleph_0}, under Martin's Axiom st=2ℵ0\mathfrak{st} = 2^{\aleph_0} and that st=ℵ1\mathfrak{st} = \aleph_1 is consistent with MA(Knaster)+2ℵ0=κ\mathsf{MA}({\rm Knaster}) + 2^{\aleph_0} = κ for any regular κκ thus the value of st\mathfrak{st} is not decided by ZFC\mathsf{ZFC} and in fact can be strictly below essentially all well studied cardinal characteristics. We show that conversely it is consistent that st=2ℵ0=κ\mathfrak{st} = 2^{\aleph_0} = κ for any κκ of uncountable cofinality while non(M)=a=s=g=ℵ1{\rm non}(\mathcal M) = \mathfrak{a} = \mathfrak{s} = \mathfrak{g} = \aleph_1. In particular st\mathfrak{st} is independent of the lefthand side of Cichoń's diagram, amongst other things. The proof involves an in depth study of the standard ccc forcing notion to specialize (wide) Aronszajn trees, which may be of independent interest.

Cohen Preservation and Independence

We provide a general preservation theorem for preserving selective independent families along countable support iterations. The theorem gives a general framework for a number of results in the literature concerning models in which the independence number i\mathfrak{i} is strictly below c\mathfrak{c}, including iterations of Sacks forcing, Miller partition forcing, hh-perfect tree forcings, coding with perfect trees. Moreover, applying the theorem, we show that i=ℵ1\mathfrak{i} = \aleph_1 in the Miller Lite model. An important aspect of the preservation theorem is the notion of "Cohen preservation", which we discuss in detail.

Destructibility and Axiomatizability of Kaufmann Models

A Kaufmann model is an ω1ω_1-like, recursively saturated, rather classless model of PA\mathrm{PA} or ZF\mathrm{ZF}. Such models were constructed by Kaufmann under the combinatorial principle ♢ω1\diamondsuit_{ω_1} and Shelah showed they exist in ZFC\mathrm{ZFC} by an absoluteness argument. Kaufmann models are an important witness to the incompactness of ω1ω_1 similar to Aronszajn trees. In this paper we look at some set theoretic issues related to this motivated by the seemingly naïve question of whether such a model can be "killed" by forcing without collapsing ω1ω_1. We show that the answer to this question is independent of ZFC\mathrm{ZFC} and closely related to similar questions about Aronszajn trees. As an application of these methods we also show that it is independent of ZFC\mathrm{ZFC} whether or not Kaufmann models can be axiomatized in the logic Lω1,ω(Q)L_{ω_1, ω} (Q) where QQ is the quantifier "there exists uncountably many".

Filters and Ideal Independence

A family I⊆[ω]ω\mathscr{I} \subseteq [ω]^ω such that for all finite {Xi}i∈n⊆I\{X_i\}_{i\in n}\subseteq \mathcal I and A∈I∖{Xi}i∈nA \in \mathscr{I} \setminus \{X_i\}_{i\in n}, the set A∖⋃i<nXiA \setminus \bigcup_{i < n} X_i is infinite, is said to be ideal independent. An ideal independent family which is maximal under inclusion is said to be a maximal ideal independent family and the least cardinality of such family is denoted smm\mathfrak{s}_{mm}. We show that u≤smm\mathfrak{u}\leq\mathfrak{s}_{mm}, which in particular establishes the independence of smm\mathfrak{s}_{mm} and i\mathfrak{i}. Given an arbitrary set CC of uncountable cardinals, we show how to simultaneously adjoin via forcing maximal ideal independent families of cardinality λλ for each λ∈Cλ\in C, thus establishing the consistency of C⊆spec(smm)C\subseteq \hbox{spec}(\mathfrak{s}_{mm}). Assuming CH\mathsf{CH}, we construct a maximal ideal independent family, which remains maximal after forcing with any proper, ωω^ωω-bounding, pp-point preserving forcing notion and evaluate smm\mathfrak{s}_{mm} in several well studied forcing extensions.

Higher Dimensional Cardinal Characteristics for Sets of Functions II

We study the values of the higher dimensional cardinal characteristics for sets of functions f:ωω→ωωf:ω^ω\to ω^ω introduced by the second author. We prove that while the bounding numbers for these cardinals can be strictly less than the continuum, the dominating numbers cannot. We compute the bounding numbers for the higher dimensional relations in many well known models of ¬CH\neg\mathsf{CH} such as the Cohen, random and Sacks models and, as a byproduct show that, with possibly one exception, for the bounding numbers there are no ZFC\mathsf{ZFC} relations between them beyond those in the higher dimensional Cichoń diagram. In the case of the dominating numbers we show that in fact they collapse in the sense that modding out by the ideal does not change their values. Moreover, they are closely related to the dominating numbers dκλ\mathfrak{d}^λ_κ.

Projective well-orders and coanalytic witnesses

We further develop a forcing notion known as Coding with Perfect Trees and show that this poset preserves, in a strong sense, definable PP-points, definable tight MAD families and definable selective independent families. As a result, we obtain a model in which a=u=i=ℵ1<2ℵ0=ℵ2\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{u}=\mathfrak{i}=\aleph_1<2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_2, each of a\mathfrak{a}, u\mathfrak{u}, i\mathfrak{i} has a Π11Π^1_1 witness and there is a Δ31Δ^1_3 well-order of the reals. Note that both the complexity of the witnesses of the above combinatorial cardinal characteristics, as well as the complexity of the well-order are optimal. In addition, we show that the existence of a Δ31Δ^1_3 well-order of the reals is consistent with c=ℵ2\mathfrak{c}=\aleph_2 and each of the following: a=u<i\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{u}<\mathfrak{i}, a=i<u\mathfrak{a}=\mathfrak{i}<\mathfrak{u}, a<u=i\mathfrak{a}<\mathfrak{u}=\mathfrak{i}, where the smaller cardinal characteristics have co-analytic witnesses. Our methods allow the preservation of only sufficiently definable witnesses, which significantly differs from other preservation results of this type.

Selective Independence and hh-Perfect Tree Forcing Notions

Generalizing the proof for Sacks forcing, we show that the hh-perfect tree forcing notions introduced by Goldstern, Judah and Shelah preserve selective independent families even when iterated. As a result we obtain new proofs of the consistency of i=u<non(N)=cof(N)\mathfrak{i} = \mathfrak{u} < \mathrm{non} (\mathcal N) = \mathrm{cof} (\mathcal N) and i<u=non(N)=cof(N)\mathfrak{i} < \mathfrak{u} = \mathrm{non} (\mathcal N) = \mathrm{cof}( \mathcal N) as well as some related results.

Alternative Cichoń Diagrams and Forcing Axioms Compatible with CH

This dissertation surveys several topics in the general areas of iterated forcing, infinite combinatorics and set theory of the reals. There are two parts. In the first half I consider alternative versions of the Cichoń diagram. First I show that for a wide variety of reduction concepts there is a Cichoń diagram for effective cardinal characteristics relativized to that reduction. As an application I investigate in detail the Cichoń diagram for degrees of constructibility relative to a fixed inner model of ZFC. Then I study generalizations of cardinal characteristics to the space of functions f:ωω→ωωf:ω^ω\to ω^ω. I prove that these cardinals can be organized into two diagrams analogous to the standard Cichoń diagram, prove several independence results and investigate the relation between these cardinals and the standard cardinal invariants on omega. In the second half of the thesis I look at forcing axioms compatible with CH. First I consider Jensen's subcomplete and subproper forcing. I generalize these notions to larger classes which are (apparently) much more nicely behaved structurally. I prove iteration and preservation theorems for both classes and use these to produce many new models of the subcomplete forcing axiom. Finally I deal with dee-complete forcing and its associated axiom DCFA. Extending a well-known result of Shelah, I show that if a tree of height ω1ω_1 with no branch can be embedded into an ω1ω_1-tree, possibly with uncountable branches, then it can be specialized without adding reals. As a consequence I give a fleshed out proof that DCFA implies there are no Kurepa trees, even if CH fails.
