Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid state. One of the front-runners is BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co$^{2+}$ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering studies of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type \JKG model and the \XXZ model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the \XXZ model but not by the \JKG model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

Magnetic Excitations and Interactions in the Kitaev Hyperhoneycomb Iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present a thorough experimental study of the three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), time-domain THz spectroscopy, and heat capacity measurements. The main results include a massive low-temperature reorganization of the INS spectral weight that evolves into a broad peak centered around 12 meV, and a distinctive peak in the THz data at 2.8(1) meV. A detailed comparison to powder-averaged spin-wave theory calculations reveals that the positions of these two features are controlled by the anisotropic $Γ$ coupling and the Heisenberg exchange $J$, respectively. The refined microscopic spin model places $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ in close proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Anisotropic effect of a magnetic field on the neutron spin resonance in FeSe

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the effect of a magnetic field on the neutron spin resonance (Er = 3.6 meV) of superconducting FeSe (Tc = 9 K). While a field aligned along the in-plane direction broadens and suppresses the resonance, a c-axis aligned field does so much more efficiently, consistent with the anisotropic field-induced suppression of the superfluid density from the heat capacity measurements. These results suggest that the resonance in FeSe is associated with the superconducting electrons arising from orbital selective quasi-particle excitations between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces.

Correlated impurities and intrinsic spin liquid physics in the kagome material Herbertsmithite

Low energy inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals of the kagome spin liquid compound ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (Herbertsmithite) reveals antiferromagnetic correlations between impurity spins for energy transfers E < 0.8 meV (~J/20). The momentum dependence differs significantly from higher energy scattering which arises from the intrinsic kagome spins. The low energy fluctuations are characterized by diffuse scattering near wavevectors (1 0 0) and (0 0 3/2), which is consistent with antiferromagnetic correlations between pairs of nearest neighbor Cu impurities on adjacent triangular (Zn) interlayers. The corresponding impurity lattice resembles a simple cubic lattice in the dilute limit below the percolation threshold. Such an impurity model can describe prior neutron, NMR, and specific heat data. The low energy neutron data are consistent with the presence of a small spin-gap (Delta ~ 0.7 meV) in the kagome layers, similar to that recently observed by NMR. The ability to distinguish the scattering due to Cu impurities from that of the planar kagome Cu spins provides a new avenue for probing intrinsic spin liquid physics.

Raman study of magnetic excitations and magneto-elastic coupling in alpha-SrCr2O4

Using Raman spectroscopy, we investigate the lattice phonons, magnetic excitations, and magneto-elastic coupling in the distorted triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet alpha-SrCr2O4, which develops helical magnetic order below 43 K. Temperature dependent phonon spectra are compared to predictions from density functional theory calculations which allows us to assign the observed modes and identify weak effects arising from coupled lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom. Raman scattering associated with two-magnon excitations is observed at 20 meV and 40 meV. These energies are in general agreement with our ab-initio calculations of exchange interactions and earlier theoretical predictions of the two-magnon Raman response of triangular-lattice antiferromagnets. The temperature dependence of the two-magnon excitations indicates that spin correlations persist well above the Néel temperature.

Spin Fluctuations from Hertz to Terahertz on a Triangular Lattice

The temporal magnetic correlations of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$ are examined through thirteen decades ($10^{-13}-1$~sec) using ultra-high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering, muon spin relaxation, AC and nonlinear susceptibility measurements. Unlike the short-ranged {\it spatial} correlations, the temperature dependence of the {\it temporal} correlations show distinct anomalies. The spin fluctuation rate decreases precipitously upon cooling towards $T^{\ast}=8.5$~K, but fluctuations on the microsecond time scale then persist in an anomalous dynamical regime for 4 K $<T\le T^{\ast}$. As this time scale exceeds that of single site dynamics by six orders of magnitude, these fluctuations bear evidence of emergent degrees of freedom within the short-range correlated incommensurate state of NiGa$_2$S$_4$.

Magnetic structure of the conductive triangular-lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO2

We performed neutron single crystal and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments in order to investigate the magnetic and crystal structures of the conductive layered triangular-lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO2 with a putative spin chirality, which contributes to an unconventional anomalous Hall effect. We revealed that the ground-state magnetic structure is a commensurate and nearly-coplanar 120-degrees spin structure. The 120-degrees plane in different Cr layers seem to tilt with one another, leading to a small noncoplanarity. Such a small but finite non-coplanar stacking of the 120-degrees planes gives rise to a finite scalar spin chirality, which may be responsible for the unconventional nature of the Hall effect of PdCrO2.

Fractionalized excitations in the spin liquid state of a kagomé lattice antiferromagnet

New physics can emerge in magnetic materials where quantum fluctuations are enhanced due to reduced dimensionality and strong frustration. One long sought example is the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state, where atomic magnetic moments are strongly correlated but do not order or freeze even in the limit of T -> 0. The RVB ground state does not break conventional symmetries, such as lattice translation or spin-rotation. The realization of such a quantum spin liquid in two-dimensions would represent a new state of matter. It is believed that spin liquid physics plays a role in the phenomenon of high-Tc superconductivity, and the topological properties of the spin liquid state may have applications in the field of quantum information. We present neutron scattering measurements of the spin excitations on single crystal samples of the spin-1/2 kagomé lattice antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 (also called herbertsmithite). Our observation of a spinon continuum in a two-dimensional magnet is remarkable first. The results serve as a key fingerprint of the quantum spin liquid state in herbertsmithite.

Incommensurate Magnetism in FeAs Strips: Neutron Scattering from CaFe$_4$As$_3$

Magnetism in the orthorhombic metal CaFe$_4$As$_3$ was examined through neutron diffraction for powder and single crystalline samples. Incommensurate (${\bm q}_{\rm m}\approx (0.37-0.39)\times{\bm b}^{\ast}$) and predominantly longitudinally ($\parallel b$) modulated order develops through a 2nd order phase transition at $T_{\rm N}=89.63(6)$ K with a 3D Heisenberg-like critical exponent $β=0.365(6)$. A 1st order transition at $T_2=25.6(9)$ K is associated with the development of a transverse component, locking ${\bm q}_{\rm m}$ to $0.375(2){\bm b}^{\ast}$, and increasing the moments from 2.1(1) to 2.2(3) $μ_{\rm B}$ for Fe$^{2+}$ and from 1.3(3) to 2.4(4) $μ_{\rm B}$ for Fe$^+$. The {\it ab-initio} Fermi surface is consistent with a nesting instability in cross-linked FeAs strips.

Incommensurate itinerant antiferromagnetic excitations and spin resonance in the FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ superconductor

We report on inelastic neutron scattering measurements that find incommensurate itinerant like magnetic excitations in the normal state of superconducting FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ (\Tc=14K) at wave-vector $\mathbf{Q}_{inc}=(1/2\pmε,1/2\mpε)$ with $ε$=0.09(1). In the superconducting state only the lower energy part of the spectrum shows significant changes by the formation of a gap and a magnetic resonance that follows the dispersion of the normal state excitations. We use a four band model to describe the Fermi surface topology of iron-based superconductors with the extended $s(\pm)$ symmetry and find that it qualitatively captures the salient features of these data.

Successive phase transitions and phase diagrams of the quasi-two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet Rb4Mn(MoO4)3

Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic, thermal and neutron measurements have clarified that Rb4Mn(MoO4)3 is a model system of a quasi-2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an easy-axis anisotropy, exhibiting successive transitions across an intermediate collinear phase. As a rare case for geometrically frustrated magnetism, quantitative agreement between experiment and theory is found for complete, anisotropic phase diagrams as well as magnetic properties.
