Consistency Conditions for Non-Perturbative Completions of JT Gravity

This is a careful examination of the key components of a large $N$ random matrix model method for going beyond ordinary JT gravity's topological expansion to define non-perturbative physics. It is offered as a simple and (hopefully) clear framework within which any proposed non-perturbative definition should fit, and hence be readily compared to others. Some minimal requirements for constructing consistent non-perturbative formulations are emphasized. A family of non-perturbative completions emerges from this, which includes an earlier construction. End-of-the-World branes, or simply D-branes, emerge straightforwardly in this framework and play a natural role. The many-body fermion picture of the matrix model is a key organizing motif, with many features highly analogous to a quantum black hole system, including a size that grows with the number of its microscopic constituents and a locus (the Fermi surface) beyond which quantities are traced over in order to define the physics. A formula for the thermal density matrix is proposed that allows a von Neumann form for the entropy to be written in matrix model terms.

The Distribution of Ground State Energies in JT Gravity

It is shown that the distribution of the lowest energy eigenvalue of the quantum completions of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity is completely described by a non-linear ordinary differential equation (ODE) arising from a non-perturbative treatment of a special random Hermitian matrix model. Its solution matches the result recently obtained by computing a Fredholm determinant using quadrature methods. The new ODE approach allows for analytical expressions for the asymptotic behaviour to be extracted. The results are highly analogous to the well-known Tracy-Widom distribution for the lowest eigenvalue of Gaussian random Hermitian matrices, which appears in a very diverse set of physical and mathematical contexts. Similarly, it is expected that the new distribution characterizes a type of universality that can arise in various gravity settings, including black hole physics in various dimensions, and perhaps beyond. It has an association to a special multicritical generalization of the Gross-Witten-Wadia phase transition.

The Microstate Physics of JT Gravity and Supergravity

It is proposed that a complete understanding of two-dimensional quantum gravity and its emergence in random matrix models requires fully embracing {\it both} Wigner (statistics) and 't Hooft (geometry). Using non-perturbative definitions of random matrix models that yield various JT gravity and JT supergravity models on Euclidean surfaces of arbitrary topology, Fredholm determinants are used to extract precise information about the spectra of discrete microstates that underlie the physics. A core result of the computations is that in each case, the (super) Schwarzian spectrum seen at leading order is only an approximation to a new kind of spectrum that is fundamentally discrete. It is further argued that the matrix models point to a {\it single} distinguished copy of the discrete spectrum that characterizes the holographic dual of the Lorentzian (super) gravity theory. These facts suggest that the factorization puzzle is entirely resolved since the discrete spectrum underlying the Schwarzian can have a sensible quantum mechanical origin in a single theory, without an appeal to an ensemble. It is argued that more generally, double-scaled matrix models contain information about both the Lorentzian and Euclidean approaches to quantum gravity. The former comes from the Wignerian approach while the latter from the 't Hooftian 1/N topological expansion.

Explorations of Non-Perturbative JT Gravity and Supergravity

Some recently proposed definitions of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and supergravities in terms of combinations of minimal string models are explored, with a focus on physics beyond the perturbative expansion in spacetime topology. While this formally involves solving infinite order non-linear differential equations, it is shown that the physics can be extracted to arbitrarily high accuracy in a simple controlled truncation scheme, using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. The non-perturbative spectral densities are explicitly computed and exhibited. The full spectral form factors, involving crucial non-perturbative contributions from wormhole geometries, are also computed and displayed, showing the non-perturbative details of the characteristic `slope', `dip', `ramp' and `plateau' features. It is emphasized that results of this kind can most likely be readily extracted for other types of JT gravity using the same methods.

JT Supergravity, Minimal Strings, and Matrix Models

It is proposed that a family of Jackiw-Teitelboim supergravites, recently discussed in connection with matrix models by Stanford and Witten, can be given a complete definition, to all orders in the topological expansion and beyond, in terms of a specific combination of minimal string theories. This construction defines non-perturbative physics for the supergravity that is well-defined and stable. The minimal models come from double-scaled complex matrix models and correspond to the cases $(2Γ{+}1,2)$ in the Altland-Zirnbauer $(\boldsymbolα,\boldsymbolβ)$ classification of random matrix ensembles, where $Γ$ is a parameter. A central role is played by a non-linear `string equation' that naturally incorporates $Γ$, usually taken to be an integer, counting e.g., D-branes in the minimal models. Here, half-integer $Γ$ also has an interpretation. In fact, $Γ{=}{\pm}\frac12$ yields the cases $(0,2)$ and $(2,2)$ that were shown by Stanford and Witten to have very special properties. These features are manifest in this definition because the relevant solutions of the string equation have special properties for $Γ{=}{\pm}\frac12$. Additional special features for other half-integer $Γ$ suggest new surprises in the supergravity models.

Non-Perturbative JT Gravity

Recently, Saad, Shenker and Stanford showed how to define the genus expansion of Jackiw-Teitelboim quantum gravity in terms of a double-scaled Hermitian matrix model. However, the model's non-perturbative sector has fatal instabilities at low energy that they cured by procedures that render the physics non-unique. This might not be a desirable property for a system that is supposed to capture key features of quantum black holes. Presented here is a model with identical perturbative physics at high energy that instead has a stable and unambiguous non-perturbative completion of the physics at low energy. An explicit examination of the full spectral density function shows how this is achieved. The new model, which is based on complex matrix models, also allows for the straightforward inclusion of spacetime features analogous to Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Intriguingly, there is a deformation parameter that connects this non-perturbative formulation of JT gravity to one which, at low energy, has features of a super JT gravity.

A Microscopic Description of Thermodynamic Volume in Extended Black Hole Thermodynamics

Using the fact that theories of gravity with asymptotically three-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries have dual descriptions as two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), we present the first study in field theory of the thermodynamic volume of various black hole solutions. We explain in general two-dimensional CFT terms why the presence of a thermodynamic volume can render certain black hole solutions "super-entropic". Super-entropicity simply results from the fact that the Cardy formula, which gives the gravitational Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, can over-count the CFT entropy. The examples of charged Banados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes and generalized exotic BTZ black holes are described. These observations help explain why the specific heat at constant volume can signal the instability of such solutions, as recently conjectured.

Holographic Heat Engines as Quantum Heat Engines

Certain solutions of Einstein's equations in anti-de Sitter spacetime can be engineered, using extended gravitational thermodynamics, to yield `holographic heat engines', devices that turn heat into useful mechanical work. On the other hand, there are constructions (both experimental and theoretical) where a series of operations is performed on a small quantum system, defining what are known as `quantum heat engines'. We propose that certain holographic heat engines can be considered models of quantum heat engines, and the possible fruitfulness of this connection is discussed. Motivated by features of quantum heat engines that take a quantum system through analogues of certain classic thermodynamic cycles, some black hole Otto and Diesel cycles are presented and explored for the first time. In the expected regime of overlap, our Otto efficiency formulae are of the form exhibited by quantum and classical heat engines.

Instability of Super-Entropic Black Holes in Extended Thermodynamics

The charged black hole of Banados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli is studied in extended gravitational thermodynamics where there is a dynamical pressure and volume. It is a simple example of a super-entropic black hole, violating the reverse isoperimetric inequality. It is proven that this property implies that its specific heat at constant volume is negative, signalling a new kind of fundamental instability for black holes. It is conjectured that this instability is present for other super-entropic black holes, and this is demonstrated numerically for a large family of known solutions.

Specific Heats and Schottky Peaks for Black Holes in Extended Thermodynamics

In the extended thermodynamics of black holes, there is a dynamical pressure and its conjugate volume. The phase structure of many of these black holes has been studied a great deal and shown to give close analogues of the phase structure of various ordinary matter systems. However, we point out that the most studied black holes in this framework, such as Schwarzschild-AdS and Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS, and various analogues in higher-derivative gravity, do not have the type of elementary degrees of freedom that play a central role in the classic models of matter. This is because they have vanishing specific heat at constant volume, C_V. As examples with non-vanishing C_V, the Kerr-AdS and STU-AdS black holes do have such degrees of freedom, and a study of C_V(T) reveals Schottky-like behaviour suggestive of a finite window of energy excitations. This intriguing physics may have useful applications in fields such as holographic duality, quantum information, and beyond.

An Exact Efficiency Formula for Holographic Heat Engines

Further consideration is given to the efficiency of black hole heat engines that perform mechanical work via the pdV terms present in the First Law of extended gravitational thermodynamics. It is noted that when the engine cycle is a rectangle with sides parallel to the (p,V) axes, the efficiency can be written simply in terms of the mass of the black hole evaluated at the corners. Since an arbitrary cycle can be approximated to any desired accuracy by a tiling of rectangles, a general geometrical algorithm for computing the efficiency follows. A simple generalization of the algorithm renders it applicable to more general classes of heat engine, beyond the black hole context.

Born-Infeld AdS Black Holes as Heat Engines

We study the efficiency of heat engines that perform mechanical work via the pdV terms present in the First Law in extended gravitational thermodynamics. We use charged black holes as the working substance, for a particular choice of engine cycle. The context is Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant and a Born-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics sector. We compare the results for these `holographic' heat engines to previous results obtained for Einstein-Maxwell black holes, and for the case where there is a Gauss-Bonnet sector.

Gauss-Bonnet Black Holes and Holographic Heat Engines Beyond Large N

Working in the extended black hole thermodynamics where a dynamical cosmological constant defines a thermodynamic pressure p, we study the efficiency of heat engines that perform mechanical work via the pdV terms now present in the First Law. Here the black hole itself is the working substance, and we focus on a judiciously chosen engine cycle. We work in Gauss-Bonnet-Einstein-Maxwell gravity with negative cosmological constant and, using a high temperature expansion, compare the results for these `holographic' heat engines to that of previously studied cases with no Gauss-Bonnet sector. From the dual holographic large N field theory perspective, this amounts to studying the effects of a class of 1/N corrections to the efficiency of the cycle.

Entanglement Entropy of Magnetic Electron Stars

We study the behavior of the entanglement entropy in $(2+1)$--dimensional strongly coupled theories via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider theories at a finite charge density with a magnetic field, with their holographic dual being Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory in four dimensional anti--de Sitter gravity. Restricting to black hole and electron star solutions at zero temperature in the presence of a background magnetic field, we compute their holographic entanglement entropy using the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription for both strip and disk geometries. In the case of the electric or magnetic zero temperature black holes, we are able to confirm that the entanglement entropy is invariant under electric-magnetic duality. In the case of the electron star with a finite magnetic field, for the strip geometry, we find a discontinuity in the first derivative of the entanglement entropy as the strip width is increased.

The Extended Thermodynamic Phase Structure of Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt

We study aspects of the extended gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime, where the cosmological constant is treated as a dynamical pressure. Attention is paid to the phase structure in the (p,T) plane, which has a line of first order phase transitions extending from the origin. We argue for a dynamical interpretation of the unstable physics in the negative specific heat region. A deformation corresponding to a dyonic Taub-NUT/Bolt system is also explored, and the effect of the deformation on the phase diagram is characterised.

Holographic Heat Engines

It is shown that in theories of gravity where the cosmological constant is considered a thermodynamic variable, it is natural to use black holes as heat engines. Two examples are presented in detail using AdS charged black holes as the working substance. We notice that for static black holes, the maximally efficient traditional Carnot engine is also a Stirling engine. The case of negative cosmological constant supplies a natural realization of these engines in terms of the field theory description of the fluids to which they are holographically dual. We first propose a precise picture of how the traditional thermodynamic dictionary of holography is extended when the cosmological constant is dynamical and then conjecture that the engine cycles can be performed by using renormalization group flow. We speculate about the existence of a natural dual field theory counterpart to the gravitational thermodynamic volume.

Thermodynamic Volumes for AdS-Taub-NUT and AdS-Taub-Bolt

In theories of semi-classical quantum gravity where the cosmological constant is considered a thermodynamic variable, the gravitational mass of a black hole has been shown to correspond to the enthalpy of the thermodynamic system, rather than the energy. We propose that this should be extended to all spacetime solutions, and consider the meaning of this extension of gravitational thermodynamics for the Taub-NUT and Taub-Bolt geometries in four dimensional locally anti-de Sitter spacetime. We present formulae for their thermodynamic volumes. Surprisingly, Taub-NUT has negative volume, for which there is a natural dynamical explanation in terms of the process of formation of the spacetime. A special case corresponds to pure AdS_4 with an S^3 slicing. The same dynamical setting can explain the negative entropy known to exist for these solutions for a range of parameters.

Large N Phase Transitions, Finite Volume, and Entanglement Entropy

Holographic studies of the entanglement entropy of field theories dual to charged and neutral black holes in asymptotically global AdS4 spacetimes are presented. The goal is to elucidate various properties of the quantity that are peculiar to working in finite volume, and to gain access to the behaviour of the entanglement entropy in the rich thermodynamic phase structure that is present at finite volume and large N. The entropy is followed through various first order phase transitions, and also a novel second order phase transition. Properties of a specific heat in the neighbourhood of the critical point are computed. Behaviour is found that contrasts interestingly with an earlier holographic study of a second order phase transition dual to an holographic superconductor.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy and Renormalization Group Flow

Using holography, we study the entanglement entropy of strongly coupled field theories perturbed by operators that trigger an RG flow from a conformal field theory in the ultraviolet (UV) to a new theory in the infrared (IR). The holographic duals of such flows involve a geometry that has the UV and IR regions separated by a transitional structure in the form of a domain wall. We address the question of how the geometric approach to computing the entanglement entropy organizes the field theory data, exposing key features as the change in degrees of freedom across the flow, how the domain wall acts as a UV region for the IR theory, and a new area law controlled by the domain wall. Using a simple but robust model we uncover this organization, and expect much of it to persist in a wide range of holographic RG flow examples. We test our formulae in two known examples of RG flow in 3+1 and 2+1 dimensions that connect non-trivial fixed points.

Holographic Studies of Entanglement Entropy in Superconductors

We present the results of our studies of the entanglement entropy of a superconducting system described holographically as a fully back-reacted gravity system, with a stable ground state. We use the holographic prescription for the entanglement entropy. We uncover the behavior of the entropy across the superconducting phase transition, showing the reorganization of the degrees of freedom of the system. We exhibit the behaviour of the entanglement entropy from the superconducting transition all the way down to the ground state at T=0. In some cases, we also observe a novel transition in the entanglement entropy at intermediate temperatures, resulting from the detection of an additional length scale.

Holography, Fractionalization and Magnetic Fields

Four dimensional gravity with a U(1) gauge field, coupled to various fields in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime, provides a rich arena for the holographic study of the strongly coupled (2+1)-dimensional dynamics of finite density matter charged under a global U(1). As a first step in furthering the study of the properties of fractionalized and partially fractionalized degrees of freedom in the strongly coupled theory, we construct electron star solutions at zero temperature in the presence of a background magnetic field. We work in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. In all cases we construct, the magnetic source is cloaked by an event horizon. A key ingredient of our solutions is our observation that starting with the standard Landau level structure for the density of states, the electron star limits reduce the charge density and energy density to that of the free fermion result. Using this result we construct three types of solution: One has a star in the infra-red with an electrically neutral horizon, another has a star that begins at an electrically charged event horizon, and another has the star begin a finite distance from an electrically charged horizon.

Dynamics of Fundamental Matter in N=2* Yang-Mills Theory

We study the dynamics of quenched fundamental matter in $\mathcal{N}=2^\ast$ supersymmetric large $N$ SU(N) Yang-Mills theory at zero temperature. Our tools for this study are probe D7-branes in the holographically dual $\mathcal{N}=2^\ast$ Pilch-Warner gravitational background. Previous work using D3-brane probes of this geometry has shown that it captures the physics of a special slice of the Coulomb branch moduli space of the gauge theory, where the $N$ constituent D3-branes form a dense one dimensional locus known as the enhancon, located deep in the infrared. Our present work shows how this physics is supplemented by the physics of dynamical flavours, revealed by the D7-branes embeddings we find. The Pilch-Warner background introduces new divergences into the D7-branes free energy, which we are able to remove with a single counterterm. We find a family of D7-brane embeddings in the geometry and discuss their properties. We study the physics of the quark condensate, constituent quark mass, and part of the meson spectrum. Notably, there is a special zero mass embedding that ends on the enhancon, which shows that while the geometry acts repulsively on the D7-branes, it does not do so in a way that produces spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.

Evolution of Holographic Entanglement Entropy after Thermal and Electromagnetic Quenches

We study the evolution and scaling of the entanglement entropy after two types of quenches for a 2+1 field theory, using holographic techniques. We study a thermal quench, dual to the addition of a shell of uncharged matter to four dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS_4) spacetime, and study the subsequent formation of a Schwarzschild black hole. We also study an electromagnetic quench, dual to the addition of a shell of charged sources to AdS_4, following the subsequent formation of an extremal dyonic black hole. In these backgrounds we consider the entanglement entropy of two types of geometries, the infinite strip and the round disc, and find distinct behavior for each. Some of our findings naturally supply results analogous to observations made in the literature for lower dimensions, but we also uncover several new phenomena, such as (in some cases) a discontinuity in the time derivative of the entanglement entropy as it nears saturation, and for the electromagnetic quench, a logarithmic growth in the entanglement entropy with time for both the disc and strip, before settling to saturation.

Global Currents, Phase Transitions, and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Large N_c Gauge Theory

We study, using a gravity dual, the finite temperature dynamics of $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory for large $N_c$, with fundamental quark flavours in a quenched approximation, in the presence of a fixed R--charge under a global R--current. We observe several notable phenomena. There is a first order phase transition where the quark condensate jumps discontinuously at finite quark mass, generalizing similar transitions seen at zero charge. Our tool in these studies is holography, the string dual of the gauge theory being the geometry of $N_c$ spinning D3--branes at finite temperature, probed by a D7--brane.

Thermal Dynamics of Quarks and Mesons in N=2* Yang-Mills Theory

We study the dynamics of quenched fundamental matter in $\mathcal{N}=2^\ast$ supersymmetric large $N_c$ $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills theory, extending our earlier work to finite temperature. We use probe D7-branes in the holographically dual thermalized generalization of the $\mathcal{N}=2^\ast$ Pilch-Warner gravitational background found by Buchel and Liu. Such a system provides an opportunity to study how key features of the dynamics are affected by being in a non-conformal setting where there is an intrinsic scale, set here by the mass, $m_H$, of a hypermultiplet. Such studies are motivated by connections to experimental studies of the quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC, where the microscopic theory of the constituents, QCD, has a scale, $Λ_{\rm QCD}$. We show that the binding energy of mesons in the $\mathcal{N}=2^\ast$ theory is increased in the presence of the scale $m_H$, and that subsequently the meson-melting temperature is higher than for the conformal case.

Holographic Aspects of Fermi Liquids in a Background Magnetic Field

We study the effects of an external magnetic field on the properties of the quasiparticle spectrum of the class of 2+1 dimensional strongly coupled theories holographically dual to charged AdS$_4$ black holes at zero temperature. We uncover several interesting features. At certain values of the magnetic field, there are multiple quasiparticle peaks representing a novel level structure of the associated Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, increasing magnetic field deforms the dispersion characteristics of the quasiparticle peaks from non-Landau toward Landau behaviour. At a certain value of the magnetic field, just at the onset of Landau-like behaviour of the Fermi liquid, the quasiparticles and Fermi surface disappear.

Landau Levels, Magnetic Fields and Holographic Fermi Liquids

We further consider a probe fermion in a dyonic black hole background in anti-de Sitter spacetime, at zero temperature, comparing and contrasting two distinct classes of solution that have previously appeared in the literature. Each class has members labeled by an integer n, corresponding to the n-th Landau level for the fermion. Our interest is the study of the spectral function of the fermion, interpreting poles in it as indicative of quasiparticles associated with the edge of a Fermi surface in the holographically dual strongly coupled theory in a background magnetic field H at finite chemical potential. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we explicitly show how one class of solutions naturally leads to an infinite family of quasiparticle peaks, signaling the presence of a Fermi surface for each level n. We present some of the properties of these peaks, which fall into a well behaved pattern at large n, extracting the scaling of Fermi energy with n and H, as well as the dispersion of the quasiparticles.

Non-perturbative String Theory from Water Waves

We use a combination of a 't Hooft limit and numerical methods to find non-perturbative solutions of exactly solvable string theories, showing that perturbative solutions in different asymptotic regimes are connected by smooth interpolating functions. Our earlier perturbative work showed that a large class of minimal string theories arise as special limits of a Painleve IV hierarchy of string equations that can be derived by a similarity reduction of the dispersive water wave hierarchy of differential equations. The hierarchy of string equations contains new perturbative solutions, some of which were conjectured to be the type IIA and IIB string theories coupled to (4,4k-2) superconformal minimal models of type (A,D). Our present paper shows that these new theories have smooth non-perturbative extensions. We also find evidence for putative new string theories that were not apparent in the perturbative analysis.

String Theory and Water Waves

We uncover a remarkable role that an infinite hierarchy of non-linear differential equations plays in organizing and connecting certain {hat c}<1 string theories non-perturbatively. We are able to embed the type 0A and 0B (A,A) minimal string theories into this single framework. The string theories arise as special limits of a rich system of equations underpinned by an integrable system known as the dispersive water wave hierarchy. We observe that there are several other string-like limits of the system, and conjecture that some of them are type IIA and IIB (A,D) minimal string backgrounds. We explain how these and several string-like special points arise and are connected. In some cases, the framework endows the theories with a non-perturbative definition for the first time. Notably, we discover that the Painleve IV equation plays a key role in organizing the string theory physics, joining its siblings, Painleve I and II, whose roles have previously been identified in this minimal string context.

D-Branes and Fluxes in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

Type 0A string theory in the (2,4k) superconformal minimal model backgrounds, with background ZZ D-branes or R-R fluxes can be formulated non-perturbatively. The branes and fluxes have a description as threshold bound states in an associated one-dimensional quantum mechanics which has a supersymmetric structure, familiar from studies of the generalized KdV system. The relevant bound state wavefunctions in this problem have unusual asymptotics (they are not normalizable in general, and break supersymmetry) which are consistent with the underlying description in terms of open and closed string sectors. The overall organization of the physics is very pleasing: The physics of the closed strings in the background of branes or fluxes is captured by the generalized KdV system and non-perturbative string equations obtained by reduction of that system (the hierarchy of equations found by Dalley, Johnson, Morris and Watterstam). Meanwhile, the bound states wavefunctions, which describe the physics of the ZZ D-brane (or flux) background in interaction with probe FZZT D-branes, are captured by the generalized mKdV system, and non-perturbative string equations obtained by reduction of that system (the Painleve II hierachy found by Periwal and Shevitz in this context).

Tachyon Condensation, Open-Closed Duality, Resolvents, and Minimal Bosonic and Type 0 Strings

Type 0A string theory in the (2,4k) superconformal minimal model backgrounds and the bosonic string in the (2,2k-1) conformal minimal models, while perturbatively identical in some regimes, may be distinguished non-perturbatively using double scaled matrix models. The resolvent of an associated Schrodinger operator plays three very important interconnected roles, which we explore perturbatively and non-perturbatively. On one hand, it acts as a source for placing D-branes and fluxes into the background, while on the other, it acts as a probe of the background, its first integral yielding the effective force on a scaled eigenvalue. We study this probe at disc, torus and annulus order in perturbation theory, in order to characterize the effects of D-branes and fluxes on the matrix eigenvalues. On a third hand, the integrated resolvent forms a representation of a twisted boson in an associated conformal field theory. The entire content of the closed string theory can be expressed in terms of Virasoro constraints on the partition function, which is realized as wavefunction in a coherent state of the boson. Remarkably, the D-brane or flux background is simply prepared by acting with a vertex operator of the twisted boson. This generates a number of sharp examples of open-closed duality, both old and new. We discuss whether the twisted boson conformal field theory can usefully be thought of as another holographic dual of the non-critical string theory.

Unoriented Minimal Type 0 Strings

We define a family of string equations with perturbative expansions that admit an interpretation as an unoriented minimal string theory with background D-branes and R-R fluxes. The theory also has a well-defined non-perturbative sector and we expect it to have a continuum interpretation as an orientifold projection of the non-critical type~0A string for \hat{c}=0, the (2,4) model. There is a second perturbative region which is consistent with an interpretation in terms of background R-R fluxes. We identify a natural parameter in the formulation that we speculate may have an interpretation as characterizing the contribution of a new type of background D-brane. There is a non-perturbative map to a family of string equations which we expect to be the \hat{c}=0 type 0B string. The map exchanges D-branes and R-R fluxes. We present the general structure of the string equations for the (2,4k) type 0A models.

Clearing the Throat: Irrelevant Operators and Finite Temperature in Large n Gauge Theory

We study the addition of an irrelevant operator to the N=4 supersymmetric large n SU(n) gauge theory, in the presence of finite temperature, T. In the supergravity dual, the effect of the operator is known to correspond to a deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 ``throat'' which restores the asymptotic ten dimensional Minkowski region of spacetime, completing the full D3-brane solution. The system at non-zero T is interesting, since at the extremes of some of the geometrical parameters the geometry interpolates between a seven dimensional spherical Minkowskian Schwarzschild black hole (times R^3) and a five dimensional flat AdS Schwarzschild black hole (times S^5). We observe that when the coupling of the operator reaches a critical value, the deconfined phase, which is represented by the geometry with horizon, disappears for all temperatures, returning the system to a confined phase which is represented by the thermalised extremal geometry.

Penrose Limits, Deformed pp-Waves and the String Duals of N=1 Large n Gauge Theory

A certain conformally invariant N=1 supersymmetric SU(n) gauge theory has a description as an infra-red fixed point obtained by deforming the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory by giving a mass to one of its N=1 chiral multiplets. We study the Penrose limit of the supergravity dual of the large n limit of this N=1 gauge theory. The limit gives a pp-wave with R-R five-form flux and both R-R and NS-NS three-form flux. We discover that this new solution preserves twenty supercharges and that, in the light-cone gauge, string theory on this background is exactly solvable. Correspondingly, this latter is the stringy dual of a particular large charge limit of the large n gauge theory. We are able to identify which operators in the field theory survive the limit to form the string's ground state and some of the spacetime excitations. The full string model, which we exhibit, contains a family of non-trivial predictions for the properties of the gauge theory operators which survive the limit.

Probing Some N=1 AdS/CFT RG Flows

We present the results of probing the ten dimensional type IIB supergravity solution corresponding to a renormalisation group flow of supersymmetric SU(n) Yang-Mills theory from pure gauge N=4 to N=1 with two massless adjoint flavours. The endpoint of the flow is an infrared fixed point theory, and because of this simplicity of the theory, the effective Lagrangian for the probe is very well-behaved, having no zeros or singularities in the tension, and a smooth potential, all of which we exhibit. Specialising to the locus of points where the potential vanishes, we also characterise a part of the Coulomb branch of the N=1 theory. The simplicity of the gauge theory physics allows us to isolate and emphasise a key holographic feature of brane probe physics which has wider applications in the study of geometry/gauge theory duals.

The Kahler Structure of Supersymmetric Holographic RG Flows

We study the metrics on the families of moduli spaces arising from probing with a brane the ten and eleven dimensional supergravity solutions corresponding to renormalisation group flows of supersymmetric large n gauge theory. In comparing the geometry to the physics of the dual gauge theory, it is important to identify appropriate coordinates, and starting with the case of SU(n) gauge theories flowing from N=4 to N=1 via a mass term, we demonstrate that the metric is Kahler, and solve for the Kahler potential everywhere along the flow. We show that the asymptotic form of the Kahler potential, and hence the peculiar conical form of the metric, follows from special properties of the gauge theory. Furthermore, we find the analogous Kahler structure for the N=4 preserving Coulomb branch flows, and for an N=2 flow. In addition, we establish similar properties for two eleven dimensional flow geometries recently presented in the literature, one of which has a deformation of the conifold as its moduli space. In all of these cases, we notice that the Kahler potential appears to satisfy a simple universal differential equation. We prove that this equation arises for all purely Coulomb branch flows dual to both ten and eleven dimensional geometries, and conjecture that the equation holds much more generally.

However both parts appeared on the online proceedings, and are also included in this document. The first part concerns an exploration of the connection between the physics of the `enhancon' geometry arising from wrapping N D6-branes on the K3 manifold in Type IIA string theory and that of a charge N BPS multi-monopole. This also relates to the physics of 2+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with eight supercharges. The main results uncovered by this exploration are: a) better insight into the non-perturbative geometry of the enhancon; b) the structure of the moduli space geometry, and its characterisation in terms of generalisations of an Atiyah-Hitchin-like manifold; c) the use of Nahm data to describe aspects of the geometry, showing that the enhancon locus itself has a description as a fuzzy sphere. Part two discusses the addition of extra D2-branes into the geometry. Two probe computations show the difference between the geometry as seen by D2-branes and that seen by wrapped D6-branes, and the accompanying gauge theory interpretations are discussed.

Holography, Thermodynamics and Fluctuations of Charged AdS Black Holes

The physical properties of Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in (n+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime are related, by a holographic map, to the physics of a class of n-dimensional field theories coupled to a background global current. Motivated by that fact, and the recent observations of the striking similarity between the thermodynamic phase structure of these black holes (in the canonical ensemble) and that of the van der Waals-Maxwell liquid-gas system, we explore the physics in more detail. We study fluctuations and stability within the equilibrium thermodynamics, examining the specific heats and electrical permittivity of the holes, and consider the analogue of the Clayperon equation at the phase boundaries. Consequently, we refine the phase diagrams in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. We study the interesting physics in the neighbourhood of the critical point in the canonical ensemble. There is a second order phase transition found there, and that region is characterized by a Landau-Ginzburg model with A_3 potential. The holographically dual field theories provide the description of the microscopic degrees of freedom which underlie all of the thermodynamics, as can be seen by examining the form of the microscopic fluctuations.

Surface Terms as Counterterms in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We examine the recently proposed technique of adding boundary counterterms to the gravitational action for spacetimes which are locally asymptotic to anti-de Sitter. In particular, we explicitly identify higher order counterterms, which allow us to consider spacetimes of dimensions d<=7. As the counterterms eliminate the need of ``background subtraction'' in calculating the action, we apply this technique to study examples where the appropriate background was ambiguous or unknown: topological black holes, Taub-NUT-AdS and Taub-Bolt-AdS. We also identify certain cases where the covariant counterterms fail to render the action finite, and we comment on the dual field theory interpretation of this result. In some examples, the case of vanishing cosmological constant may be recovered in a limit, which allows us to check results and resolve ambiguities in certain asymptotically flat spacetime computations in the literature.

Large N Phases, Gravitational Instantons and the Nuts and Bolts of AdS Holography

Recent results in the literature concerning holography indicate that the thermodynamics of quantum gravity (at least with a negative cosmological constant) can be modeled by the large N thermodynamics of quantum field theory. We emphasize that this suggests a completely unitary evolution of processes in quantum gravity, including black hole formation and decay; and even more extreme examples involving topology change. As concrete examples which show that this correspondence holds even when the space-time is only locally asymptotically AdS, we compute the thermodynamical phase structure of the AdS-Taub-NUT and AdS-Taub-Bolt spacetimes, and compare them to a 2+1 dimensional conformal field theory (at large N) compactified on a squashed three sphere, and on the twisted plane.

K3 Orientifolds

We study string theory propagating on R^6 times K3 by constructing orientifolds of Type IIB string theory compactified on the T^4/Z_N orbifold limits of the K3 surface. This generalises the Z_2 case studied previously. The orientifold models studied may be divided into two broad categories, sometimes related by T-duality. Models in category A require either both D5- and D9-branes, or only D9-branes, for consistency. Models in category B require either only D5-branes, or no D-branes at all. This latter case is an example of a consistent purely closed unoriented string theory. The spectra of the resulting six dimensional N=1 supergravity theories are presented. Precise statements are made about the relation of the Z_N ALE spaces and D5-branes to instantons in the dual heterotic string theory.

A Conformal Field Theory of a Rotating Dyon

A conformal field theory representing a four-dimensional classical solution of heterotic string theory is presented. The low-energy limit of this solution has U(1) electric and magnetic charges, and also nontrivial axion and dilaton fields. The low-energy metric contains mass, NUT and rotation parameters. We demonstrate that this solution corresponds to part of an extremal limit of the Kerr-Taub-NUT dyon solution. This limit displays interesting `remnant' behaviour, in that asymptotically far away from the dyon the angular momentum vanishes, but far down the infinite throat in the neighbourhood of the horizon (described by our CFT) there is a non-zero angular velocity. A further natural generalization of the CFT to include an additional parameter is presented, but the full physical interpretation of its role in the resulting low energy solution is unclear.

Is string theory a theory of strings?

Recently a great deal of evidence has been found indicating that type IIA string theory compactified on K3 is equivalent to heterotic string theory compactified on T^4. Under the transformation which relates the two theories, the roles of fundamental and solitonic string solutions are interchanged. In this letter we show that there exists a solitonic membrane solution of the heterotic string theory which becomes a singular solution of the type IIA theory, and should therefore be interpreted as a fundamental membrane in the latter theory. We speculate upon the implications that the complete type IIA theory is a theory of membranes, as well as strings.

Taub--NUT Dyons in Heterotic String Theory

Starting with the Taub--NUT solution to Einstein's equations, together with a constant dilaton, a dyonic Taub--NUT solution of low energy heterotic string theory with non--trivial dilaton, axion and $U(1)$ gauge fields is constructed by employing $O(1,1)$ transformations. The electromagnetic dual of this solution is constructed, using $SL(2,\rline)$ transformations. By an appropriate change to scaled variables, the extremal limit of the dual solution is shown to correspond to the low energy limit of an exact conformal field theory presented previously.

On Integrable c<1 Open--Closed String Theory

The integrable structure of open--closed string theories in the $(p,q)$ conformal minimal model backgrounds is presented. The relation between the $τ$--function of the closed string theory and that of the open--closed string theory is uncovered. The resulting description of the open--closed string theory is shown to fit very naturally into the framework of the $sl(q,{\rm C})$ KdV hierarchies. In particular, the twisted bosons which underlie and organise the structure of the closed string theory play a similar role here and may be employed to derive loop equations and correlation function recursion relations for the open--closed strings in a simple way.

Global KdV Flows and Stable 2D Quantum Gravity

The string equation for the $[{\tilde P},Q]=Q$ formulation of non--perturbatively stable 2D quantum gravity coupled to the $(2m-1,2)$ models is studied. Global KdV flows between the appropriate solutions are considered as deformations of two compatible linear problems. It is demonstrated that the necessary conditions for such flows to exist are satisfied. A numerical study reveals such flows between the pole--free solutions of pure gravity ($m=2$), the Lee--Yang edge model ($m=3$) and topological gravity ($m=1$). We conjecture that this is the case for all of the $m$--critical models. As the $m=1$ solution is unique these global flows define a {\sl unique} solution for each $m$--critical model.
