RangL: A Reinforcement Learning Competition Platform

The RangL project hosted by The Alan Turing Institute aims to encourage the wider uptake of reinforcement learning by supporting competitions relating to real-world dynamic decision problems. This article describes the reusable code repository developed by the RangL team and deployed for the 2022 Pathways to Net Zero Challenge, supported by the UK Net Zero Technology Centre. The winning solutions to this particular Challenge seek to optimize the UK's energy transition policy to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The RangL repository includes an OpenAI Gym reinforcement learning environment and code that supports both submission to, and evaluation in, a remote instance of the open source EvalAI platform as well as all winning learning agent strategies. The repository is an illustrative example of RangL's capability to provide a reusable structure for future challenges.

Monogamy of correlations and entropy inequalities in the Bloch picture

We investigate monogamy of correlations and entropy inequalities in the Bloch representation. Here, both can be understood as direct relations between different correlation tensor elements and thus appear intimately related. To that end we introduce the split Bloch basis, that is particularly useful for representing quantum states with low dimensional support and thus amenable to purification arguments. Furthermore, we find dimension dependent entropy inequalities for the Tsallis 2-entropy. In particular, we present an analogue of the strong subadditivity and a quadratic entropy inequality. These relations are shown to be stronger than subadditivity for finite dimensional cases.

Characterizing multipartite entanglement without shared reference frames

Multipartite entanglement constitutes one of the key resources in quantum information processing. We exploit correlation tensor norms to develop a framework for its experimental detection without the need for shared frames of reference. By bounding these norms for partially separable states and states of limited dimension we achieve an extensive characterization of entanglement in multipartite systems in an experimentally feasible way. Furthermore we show that both bi- and multipartite dimensionality of entanglement can be revealed by our methods.

Thermodynamic cost of creating correlations

We investigate the fundamental limitations imposed by thermodynamics for creating correlations. Considering a collection of initially uncorrelated thermal quantum systems, we ask how much classical and quantum correlations can be obtained via a cyclic Hamiltonian process. We derive bounds on both the mutual information and entanglement of formation, as a function of the temperature of the systems and the available energy. While for a finite number of systems there is a maximal temperature allowing for the creation of entanglement, we show that genuine multipartite entanglement---the strongest form of entanglement in multipartite systems---can be created at any temperature when sufficiently many systems are considered. This approach may find applications, e.g. in quantum information processing, for physical platforms in which thermodynamic considerations cannot be ignored.

Determining lower bounds on a measure of multipartite entanglement from few local observables

We introduce a method to lower bound an entropy-based measure of genuine multipartite entanglement via nonlinear entanglement witnesses. We show that some of these bounds are tight and explicitly work out their connection to a framework of nonlinear witnesses that were published recently. Furthermore we provide a detailed analysis of these lower bounds in the context of other possible bounds and measures. In exemplary cases we show that only a few local measurements are necessary to determine these lower bounds.
