Doubling and Poincaré inequalities for uniformized measures on Gromov hyperbolic spaces

We generalize the recent results of Björn-Björn-Shanmugalingam \cite{BBS20} concerning how measures transform under the uniformization procedure of Bonk-Heinonen-Koskela for Gromov hyperbolic spaces \cite{BHK} by showing that these results also hold in the setting of uniformizing Gromov hyperbolic spaces by Busemann functions that we introduced in \cite{Bu20}. In particular uniformly local doubling and uniformly local Poincaré inequalities for the starting measure transform into global doubling and global Poincaré inequalities for the uniformized measure. We then show in the setting of uniformizations of universal covers of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds equipped with the Riemannian measure that one can obtain sharp ranges of exponents for the uniformized measure to be doubling and satisfy a $1$-Poincaré inequality. Lastly we introduce the procedure of uniform inversion for uniform metric spaces, and show that both the doubling property and the $p$-Poincaré inequality are preserved by uniform inversion for any $p \geq 1$.

Extension and trace theorems for noncompact doubling spaces

We generalize the extension and trace results of Björn-Björn-Shanmugalingam \cite{BBS21} to the setting of complete noncompact doubling metric measure spaces and their uniformized hyperbolic fillings. This is done through a uniformization procedure introduced by the author that uniformizes a Gromov hyperbolic space using a Busemann function instead of the distance functions considered in the work of Bonk-Heinonen-Koskela \cite{BHK}. We deduce several corollaries for the Besov spaces that arise as trace spaces in this fashion, including the existence of representatives that are quasicontinuous with respect to the Besov capacity, the existence of $L^p$-Lebesgue points quasieverywhere with respect to the Besov capacity, embeddings into Hölder spaces for appropriate exponents, and a stronger Lebesgue point result under an additional reverse doubling hypothesis on the measure. We also obtain several Poincaré-type inequalities relating integrals of Besov functions over balls to integrals of upper gradients of extension of these functions to a uniformized hyperbolic filling of the space.

Uniformization, $\partial$-biLipschitz maps, sphericalization, and inversion

We define $\partial$-biLipschitz homeomorphisms between uniform metric spaces and show that these maps are always quasimöbius. We also show that a homeomorphism being $\partial$-biLipschitz is equivalent to the map biLipschitz in the quasihyperbolic metrics on these spaces. The proofs of these claims require us to uniformize the quasihyperbolic metric. We further show that all admissible uniformizations of a Gromov hyperbolic space are quasimöbius to one another by the identity map, including those uniformizations that are based at a point of the Gromov boundary. Using the main results we then show that the sphericalization and inversion operations are compatible with uniformization of hyperbolic spaces in a natural sense.

Uniformizing Gromov hyperbolic spaces with Busemann functions

Given a complete Gromov hyperbolic space $X$ that is roughly starlike from a point $ω$ in its Gromov boundary $\partial_{G}X$, we use a Busemann function based at $ω$ to construct an incomplete unbounded uniform metric space $X_{\varepsilon}$ whose boundary $\partial X_{\varepsilon}$ can be canonically identified with the Gromov boundary $\partial_ωX$ of $X$ relative to $ω$. This uniformization construction generalizes the procedure used to obtain the Euclidean upper half plane from the hyperbolic plane. Furthermore we show, for an arbitrary metric space $Z$, that there is a hyperbolic filling $X$ of $Z$ that can be uniformized in such a way that the boundary $\partial X_{\varepsilon}$ has a biLipschitz identification with the completion $\bar{Z}$ of $Z$. We also prove that this uniformization procedure can be done at an exponent that is often optimal in the case of CAT$(-1)$ spaces.

Thermodynamic formalism of $GL_2(\mathbb{R})$-cocycles with canonical holonomies

We study singular value potentials of Hölder continuous $GL_2(\mathbb{R})$-cocycles over hyperbolic systems whose canonical holonomies converge and are Hölder continuous. Such cocycles include locally constant $GL_2(\mathbb{R})$-cocycles as well as fiber-bunched $GL_2(\mathbb{R})$-cocycles. We show that singular value potentials of irreducible such cocycles have unique equilibrium states. Among the reducible cocycles, we provide a characterization for cocycles whose singular value potentials have more than one equilibrium states.

Discontinuity of Lyapunov Exponents Near Fiber Bunched Cocycles

We give examples of locally constant $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycles over a Bernoulli shift which are discontinuity points for Lyapunov exponents in the Hölder topology and are arbitrarily close to satisfying the fiber bunching inequality. Backes, Brown, and the author have shown that the Lyapunov exponents vary continuously when restricted to the space of fiber bunched Hölder continuous cocycles. Our examples give evidence that this theorem is optimal within certain families of Hölder cocycles.

Rigidity of equality of Lyapunov exponents for geodesic flows

We study the relationship between the Lyapunov exponents of the geodesic flow of a closed negatively curved manifold and the geometry of the manifold. We show that if each periodic orbit of the geodesic flow has exactly one Lyapunov exponent on the unstable bundle then the manifold has constant negative curvature. We also show under a curvature pinching condition that equality of all Lyapunov exponents with respect to volume on the unstable bundle also implies that the manifold has constant negative curvature. We then study the degree to which one can emulate these rigidity theorems for the hyperbolic spaces of nonconstant negative curvature when the Lyapunov exponents with respect to volume match those of the appropriate symmetric space and obtain rigidity results under additional technical assumptions. The proofs use new results from hyperbolic dynamics including the nonlinear invariance principle of Avila and Viana and the approximation of Lyapunov exponents of invariant measures by Lyapunov exponents associated to periodic orbits which was developed by Kalinin in his proof of the Livsic theorem for matrix cocycles. We also employ rigidity results of Capogna and Pansu on quasiconformal mappings of certain nilpotent Lie groups.

A quasi-tree expansion of the Krushkal polynomial

We introduce a generalization of the Krushkal polynomial to nonorientable surfaces, and prove that this polynomial has a natural quasi-tree expansion. This generalized Krushkal polynomial contains the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial of a (possibly nonorientable) ribbon graph as a specialization. The quasi-tree expansion proven here then extends the recent quasi-tree expansions of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial deduced in the oriented case by A. Champanerkar et al. and in the more general unoriented case by E. Dewey and F. Vignes-Tourneret. The generalized Krushkal polynomial also contains the Las Vergnas polynomial of a cellulation of a surface as a specialization; we use this fact to deduce a quasi-tree expansion for the Las Vergnas polynomial.

Arrow ribbon graphs

We introduce an additional structure on ribbon graphs, arrow structure. We extend the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial to ribbon graph with this structure. The extended polynomial satisfies the contraction-deletion relations and naturally behaves with respect to the partial duality of ribbon graphs. We construct an arrow ribbon graph from a virtual link whose extended Bollobás-Riordan polynomial specializes to the arrow polynomial of the virtual link recently introduced by H.Dye and L.Kauffman. This result generalizes the classical Thistlethwaite theorem to the arrow polynomial of virtual links.

Bollobas-Riordan and relative Tutte polynomials

We establish a relation between the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial of a ribbon graph with the relative Tutte polynomial of a plane graph obtained from the ribbon graph using its projection to the plane in a nontrivial way. Also we give a duality formula for the relative Tutte polynomial of dual plane graphs and an expression of the Kauffman bracket of a virtual link as a specialization of the relative Tutte polynomial.
