Ricci flow and the determinant of the Laplacian on non-compact surfaces

On compact surfaces with or without boundary, Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak proved that the maximum of the determinant of the Laplacian within a conformal class of metrics with fixed area occurs at a metric of constant curvature and, for negative Euler characteristic, exhibited a flow from a given metric to a constant curvature metric along which the determinant increases. The aim of this paper is to perform a similar analysis for the determinant of the Laplacian on a non-compact surface whose ends are asymptotic to hyperbolic funnels or cusps. In that context, we show that the Ricci flow converges to a metric of constant curvature and that the determinant increases along this flow.

Asymptotics of relative heat traces and determinants on open surfaces of finite area

The goal of this paper is to prove that on surfaces with asymptotically cusp ends the relative determinant of pairs of Laplace operators is well defined. We consider a surface with cusps (M,g) and a metric h on the surface that is a conformal transformation of the initial metric g. We prove the existence of the relative determinant of the pair $(Δ_{h},Δ_{g})$ under suitable conditions on the conformal factor. The core of the paper is the proof of the existence of an asymptotic expansion of the relative heat trace for small times. We find the decay of the conformal factor at infinity for which this asymptotic expansion exists and the relative determinant is defined. Following the paper by B. Osgood, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak about extremal of determinants on compact surfaces, we prove Polyakov's formula for the relative determinant and discuss the extremal problem inside a conformal class. We discuss necessary conditions for the existence of a maximizer.

Compactness of relatively isospectral sets of surfaces via conformal surgeries

We introduce a notion of relative isospectrality for surfaces with boundary having possibly non-compact ends either conformally compact or asymptotic to cusps. We obtain a compactness result for such families via a conformal surgery that allows us to reduce to the case of surfaces hyperbolic near infinity recently studied by Borthwick and Perry, or to the closed case by Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak if there are only cusps.

Isoresonant conformal surfaces with cusps and boundedness of the relative determinant

We study the isoresonance problem on non-compact surfaces of finite area that are hyperbolic outside a compact set. Inverse resonance problems correspond to inverse spectral problems in the non-compact setting. We consider a conformal class of surfaces with hyperbolic cusps where the deformation takes place inside a fixed compact set. Inside this compactly supported conformal class we consider isoresonant metrics, i.e. metrics for which the set of resonances is the same, including multiplicities. We prove that sets of isoresonant metrics inside the conformal class are sequentially compact. We use relative determinants, splitting formulae for determinants and the result of B. Osgood, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak about compactness of sets of isospectral metrics on closed surfaces. In the second part, we study the relative determinant of the Laplace operator on a hyperbolic surface as function on the moduli space. We consider the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of fixed genus and fixed number of cusps. We consider the relative determinant of the Laplace operator and a model operator defined on the cusps. We prove that the relative determinant tends to zero as one approaches the boundary of the moduli space.
