Elliptic curves, ACM bundles and Ulrich bundles on prime Fano threefolds

Let $X$ be any smooth prime Fano threefold of degree $2g-2$ in $\mathbb{P}^{g+1}$, with $g \in \{3,\ldots,10,12\}$. We prove that for any integer $d$ satisfying $\left\lfloor \frac{g+3}{2} \right\rfloor \leq d \leq g+3$ the Hilbert scheme parametrizing smooth irreducible elliptic curves of degree $d$ in $X$ is nonempty and has a component of dimension $d$, which is furthermore reduced except for the case when $(g,d)=(4,3)$ and $X$ is contained in a singular quadric. Consequently, we deduce that the moduli space of rank--two slope--stable $ACM$ bundles $\mathcal{F}_d$ on $X$ such that $\det(\mathcal{F}_d)=\mathcal{O}_X(1)$, $c_2(\mathcal{F}_d)\cdot \mathcal{O}_X(1)=d$ and $h^0(\mathcal{F}_d(-1))=0$ is nonempty and has a component of dimension $2d-g-2$, which is furthermore reduced except for the case when $(g,d)=(4,3)$ and $X$ is contained in a singular quadric. This completes the classification of rank-two $ACM$ bundles on prime Fano threefolds. Secondly, we prove that for every $h \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ the moduli space of stable Ulrich bundles $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $2h$ and determinant $\mathcal{O}_X(3h)$ on $X$ is nonempty and has a reduced component of dimension $h^2(g+3)+1$; this result is optimal in the sense that there are no other Ulrich bundles occurring on $X$. This in particular shows that any prime Fano threefold is Ulrich wild.

Ulrich bundles on a general blow--up of the plane

We prove that on $X_n$, the plane blown--up at $n$ general points, there are Ulrich line bundles with respect to a line bundle corresponding to curves of degree $m$ passing simply through the $n$ blown--up points, with $m\leq 2\sqrt{n}$ and such that the line bundle in question is very ample on $X_n$. We prove that the number of these Ulrich line bundles tends to infinity with $n$. We also prove the existence of slope--stable rank--$r$ Ulrich vector bundles on $X_n$, for $n\geq 2$ and any $r \geq 1$ and we compute the dimensions of their moduli spaces. These computations imply that $X_n$ is {Ulrich wild}.

Brill-Noether general K3 surfaces with the maximal number of elliptic pencils of minimal degree

We explicitly construct Brill--Noether general $K3$ surfaces of genus $4,6$ and $8$ having the maximal number of elliptic pencils of degrees $3, 4$ and $5$, respectively, and study their moduli spaces and moduli maps to the moduli space of curves. As an application we prove the existence of Brill--Noether general $K3$ surfaces of genus $4$ and $6$ without stable Lazarsfeld--Mukai bundles of minimal $c_2$.

Genus two curves on abelian surfaces

This paper deals with singularities of genus 2 curves on a general (d_1,d_2)-polarized abelian surface (S,L). In analogy with Chen's results concerning rational curves on K3 surfaces [Ch1,Ch2], it is natural to ask whether all such curves are nodal. We prove that this holds true if and only if d_2 is not divisible by 4. In the cases where d_2 is a multiple of 4, we exhibit genus 2 curves in |L| that have a triple, 4-tuple or 6-tuple point. We show that these are the only possible types of unnodal singularities of a genus 2 curve in |L|. Furthermore, with no assumption on d_1 and d_2, we prove the existence of at least a nodal curve in |L|. As a corollary, we obtain nonemptiness of all Severi varieties on general abelian surfaces and hence generalize [KLM, Thm 1.1] to nonprimitive polarizations.

On moduli spaces of polarized Enriques surfaces

We prove that, for any $g \geq 2$, the étale double cover $ρ_g:\mathcal{E}_{g} \to \widehat{\mathcal{E}}_{g}$ from the moduli space $\mathcal{E}_{g}$ of complex polarized genus $g$ Enriques surfaces to the moduli space $\widehat{\mathcal{E}}_{g}$ of numerically polarized genus $g$ Enriques surfaces is disconnected precisely over irreducible components of $\widehat{\mathcal{E}}_{g}$ parametrizing $2$-divisible classes, answering a question of Gritsenko and Hulek. We characterize all irreducible components of $\mathcal{E}_{g}$ in terms of a new invariant of line bundles on Enriques surfaces that generalizes the $ϕ$-invariant introduced by Cossec. In particular, we get a one-to-one correspondence between the irreducible components of $\mathcal{E}_g$ and $11$-tuples of integers satisfying particular conditions. This makes it possible, in principle, to list all irreducible components of $\mathcal{E}_g$ for each $g \geq 2$.

A few questions about curves on surfaces

In this note we address the following kind of question: let X be a smooth, irreducible, projective surface and D a divisor on X$satisfying some sort of positivity hypothesis, then is there some multiple of D depending only on X which is effective or movable? We describe some examples, discuss some conjectures and prove some results that suggest that the answer should in general be negative, unless one puts some really strong hypotheses either on D or on X.

Curves and line bundles on Del Pezzo surfaces

We extend the results of Pareschi on the constancy of the gonality and Clifford index of smooth curves in a complete linear system on Del Pezzo surfaces of degrees $\geq 2$ to the case of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1, where we explicitly classify the cases where the gonality and Clifford index are not constant. We also classify all cases of exceptional curves on Del Pezzo surfaces, which turn out to be the smooth plane curves and some other cases with Clifford dimension 3. Moreover, the property of being exceptional holds for all curves in the complete linear system. Furthermore, we relate the Clifford index and gonality of smooth curves in $|L|$ to the higher order embedding properties of $|L+K_S|$. More precisely, we show that for a nef line bundle $L$ on a Del Pezzo surface, $L+K_S$ is birationally $k$-very ample if and only if all the smooth curves in $|L|$ have gonality $\geq k+2$, and we also find numerical criteria for birational $k$-very ampleness.

Severi Varieties and Brill-Noether theory of curves on abelian surfaces

Severi varieties and Brill-Noether theory of curves on K3 surfaces are well understood. Yet, quite little is known for curves on abelian surfaces. Given a general abelian surface $S$ with polarization $L$ of type $(1,n)$, we prove nonemptiness and regularity of the Severi variety parametrizing $δ$-nodal curves in the linear system $|L|$ for $0\leq δ\leq n-1=p-2$ (here $p$ is the arithmetic genus of any curve in $|L|$). We also show that a general genus $g$ curve having as nodal model a hyperplane section of some $(1,n)$-polarized abelian surface admits only finitely many such models up to translation; moreover, any such model lies on finitely many $(1,n)$-polarized abelian surfaces. Under certain assumptions, a conjecture of Dedieu and Sernesi is proved concerning the possibility of deforming a genus $g$ curve in $S$ equigenerically to a nodal curve. The rest of the paper deals with the Brill-Noether theory of curves in $|L|$. It turns out that a general curve in $|L|$ is Brill-Noether general. However, as soon as the Brill-Noether number is negative and some other inequalities are satisfied, the locus $|L|^r_d$ of smooth curves in $|L|$ possessing a $g^r_d$ is nonempty and has a component of the expected dimension. As an application, we obtain the existence of a component of the Brill-Noether locus $\mathcal{M}^r_{p,d}$ having the expected codimension in the moduli space of curves $\mathcal{M}_p$. For $r=1$, the results are generalized to nodal curves.

Wall divisors and algebraically coisotropic subvarieties of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds

Rational curves on Hilbert schemes of points on $K3$ surfaces and generalised Kummer manifolds are constructed by using Brill-Noether theory on nodal curves on the underlying surface. It turns out that all wall divisors can be obtained, up to isometry, as dual divisors to such rational curves. The locus covered by the rational curves is then described, thus exhibiting algebraically coisotropic subvarieties that deform to general small deformations of the manifold. This provides strong evidence for a conjecture by Voisin concerning the Chow ring of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds. Some general results concerning the birational geometry of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds are also proved, such as a non-projective contractibility criterion for wall divisors.

On the existence of curves with $A_k$-singularities on $K3$-surfaces

Let $(S,H)$ be a general primitively polarized $K3$ surface. We prove the existence of curves in $|\mathcal O_S(nH)|$ with $A_k$-singularities and corresponding to regular points of the equisingular deformation locus. Our result is optimal for $n=1$. As a corollary, we get the existence of elliptic curves in $|\mathcal O_S(nH)|$ with a cusp and nodes or a simple tacnode and nodes. We obtain our result by studying the versal deformation family of the $m$-tacnode. Finally, we give a regularity condition for families of curves with only $A_k$-singularities in $|\mathcal O_S(nH)|.$

On $k$-gonal loci in Severi varieties on general $K3$ surfaces and rational curves on hyperkähler manifolds

In this paper we study the gonality of the normalizations of curves in the linear system $|H|$ of a general primitively polarized complex $K3$ surface $(S,H)$ of genus $p$. We prove two main results. First we give a necessary condition on $p, g, r, d$ for the existence of a curve in $ |H|$ with geometric genus $g$ whose normalization has a $g^ r_d$. Secondly we prove that for all numerical cases compatible with the above necessary condition, there is a family of \emph{nodal} curves in $|H|$ of genus $g$ carrying a $g^1_k$ and of dimension equal to the \emph{expected dimension} $\min\{2(k-1),g\}$. Relations with the Mori cone of the hyperkähler manifold $\Hilb^ k(S)$ are discussed.

On $k$-gonal loci in Severi varieties on general $K3$ surfaces and rational curves on hyperkähler manifolds (first version, superseded by arXiv:1204.4838)

In this paper we study the gonality of the normalizations of curves in the linear system $|H|$ of a general primitively polarized $K3$ surface $(S,H)$ of genus $p$. We prove two main results. First we give a necessary condition on $p, g, k$ for the existence of a curve in $|H|$ with geometric genus $g$ whose normalization has a $g^ 1_k$. Secondly we prove that for $p$ even and all numerical cases compatible with the above necessary condition, there is a family of \emph{nodal} curves $|H|$ with the given $g,k$ and of dimension equal to the \emph{expected dimension} $\min\{2(k-1),g\}$. For odd $p$ the result is only slightly less sharp. Relations with the Mori cone of the hyperkähler manifold $\Hilb^ k(S)$ and with conjectures by Hassett-Tschinkel and by Huybrechts-Sawon are discussed. This version is superseded by the new submission arXiv:1204.4838 where Theorem 0.1 is improved to include the missing case and the degeneration argument in its proof is made considerably simpler. Since the degeneration argument in the present version is of a different type, and may be useful for other purposes, we choose to keep this submission as well.

Projective normality and the generation of the ideal of an Enriques surface

We give necessary and sufficient criteria for a smooth Enriques surface S in P^r to be scheme-theoretically an intersection of quadrics. Moreover we prove in many cases that, when S contains plane cubic curves, the intersection of the quadrics containing S is the union of S and the 2-planes spanned by the plane cubic curves. We also give a new (very quick) proof of the projective normality of S if the degree of S is at least 12.

Smooth, isolated curves in families of Calabi-Yau threefolds in homogeneous spaces

We show the existence of smooth isolated curves of different degrees and genera in Calabi-Yau threefolds that are complete intersections in homogeneous spaces. Along the way, we classify all degrees and genera of smooth curves on BN general K3 surfaces of low genera. By results of Mukai, these are the K3 surfaces that can be realised as complete intersections in certain homogeneous spaces.

Geometry of rays-positive manifolds

Let M be a smooth complex projective variety and let L be a line bundle on it. Rays-positive manifolds, namely pairs (M,L) such that L is numerically effective and L\cdotR > 0 for all extremal rays R on M, are studied. Several illustrative examples and some applications are provided. In particular, projective varieties with crepant singularities and of small degree with respect to the codimension are classified, and the non-negativity of the sectional genus g(M,L) is proven, describing as well the pairs with g(M,L) = 0,1.

On the birationality of the adjunction mapping of projective varieties

Let $X$ be a smooth projective $n$-fold such that $q(X)=0$ and $L$ a globally generated, big line bundle on $X$ such that $h^0(K_X+(n-2)L) >0$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the adjoint systems $|K_X+kL|$ to be birational for $k \geq n-1$. In particular, for Calabi-Yau $n$-folds we generalize and prove parts of a conjecture of Gallego and Purnaprajna.

Recent developments and open problems in linear series

In the week 3--9, October 2010, the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach hosted a mini workshop Linear Series on Algebraic Varieties. These notes contain a variety of interesting problems which motivated the participants prior to the event, and examples, results and further problems which grew out of discussions during and shortly after the workshop. A lot of arguments presented here are scattered in the literature or constitute folklore. It was one of our aims to have a usable and easily accessible collection of examples and results.

A primer on Seshadri constants

Seshadri constants express the so called local positivity of a line bundle on a projective variety. They were introduced by Demailly. The original idea of using them towards a proof of the Fujita conjecture failed but they quickly became a subject of intensive study quite in their own right. Lazarsfeld's book "Positivity in Algebraic Geometry" contains a whole chapter devoted to local positivity and serves as a very enjoyable introduction to Seshadri constants. Since this book has appeared, the subject witnessed quite a bit of development. It is the aim of these notes to give an account of recent progress as well as to discuss many open questions and provide some examples.

On isolated smooth curves of low genera in Calabi-Yau complete intersection threefolds

Building on results of Clemens and Kley, we find criteria for a continuous family of curves in a nodal $K$-trivial threefold $Y_0$ to deform to a scheme of finitely many smooth isolated curves in a general deformation $Y_t$ of $Y_0$. As an application, we show the existence of smooth isolated curves of bounded genera and unbounded degrees in Calabi-Yau complete intersections threefolds.
