RIS-Assisted Quasi-Static Broad Coverage for Wideband mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can establish favorable wireless environments to combat the severe attenuation and blockages in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. However, to achieve the optimal enhancement of performance, the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) needs to be estimated at the cost of a large overhead that scales with the number of RIS elements and the number of users. In this paper, we design a quasi-static broad coverage at the RIS with the reduced overhead based on the statistical CSI. We propose a design framework to synthesize the power pattern reflected by the RIS that meets the customized requirements of broad coverage. For the communication of broadcast channels, we generalize the broad coverage of the single transmit stream to the scenario of multiple streams. Moreover, we employ the quasi-static broad coverage for a multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) system, and derive the analytical expression of the downlink rate, which is proved to increase logarithmically with the power gain reflected by the RIS. By taking into account the overhead of channel estimation, the proposed quasi-static broad coverage even outperforms the design method that optimizes the RIS phases using the instantaneous CSI. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify these observations.

Deep Learning Based Equalizer for MIMO-OFDM Systems with Insufficient Cyclic Prefix

In this paper, we study the equalization design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with insufficient cyclic prefix (CP). In particular, the signal detection performance is severely impaired by inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) when the multipath delay spread exceeding the length of CP. To tackle this problem, a deep learning-based equalizer is proposed for approximating the maximum likelihood detection. Inspired by the dependency between the adjacent subcarriers, a computationally efficient joint detection scheme is developed. Employing the proposed equalizer, an iterative receiver is also constructed and the detection performance is evaluated through simulations over measured multipath channels. Our results reveal that the proposed receiver can achieve significant performance improvement compared to two traditional baseline schemes.

Entropy Minimization vs. Diversity Maximization for Domain Adaptation

Entropy minimization has been widely used in unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA). However, existing works reveal that entropy minimization only may result into collapsed trivial solutions. In this paper, we propose to avoid trivial solutions by further introducing diversity maximization. In order to achieve the possible minimum target risk for UDA, we show that diversity maximization should be elaborately balanced with entropy minimization, the degree of which can be finely controlled with the use of deep embedded validation in an unsupervised manner. The proposed minimal-entropy diversity maximization (MEDM) can be directly implemented by stochastic gradient descent without use of adversarial learning. Empirical evidence demonstrates that MEDM outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on four popular domain adaptation datasets.

Secrecy Rate Maximization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Multi-Antenna Communications

We investigate transmission optimization for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna systems from the physical-layer security perspective. The design goal is to maximize the system secrecy rate subject to the source transmit power constraint and the unit modulus constraints imposed on phase shifts at the IRS. To solve this complicated non-convex problem, we develop an efficient alternating algorithm where the solutions to the transmit covariance of the source and the phase shift matrix of the IRS are achieved in closed form and semi-closed forms, respectively. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is guaranteed theoretically. Simulations results validate the performance advantage of the proposed optimized design.

Optimal Parisian-type dividends payments discounted by the number of claims for the perturbed classical risk process

In this paper we consider a classical risk process perturbed by a Brownian motion. We analyze the value function describing the mean of the cumulative discounted dividend payments paid up to Parisian ruin time and further discounted by the number of claims appeared up to this ruin time. We identify this value function for the barrier strategy and find the sufficient conditions for this strategy to be optimal. We also consider few particular examples.

Performance of a Free Space Optical Relay-Assisted Hybrid RF/FSO System in Generalized M-Distributed Channels

This paper investigates the average symbol error rate (ASER) performance of a dual-hop hybrid relaying system relying on both radio frequency (RF) and free space optical (FSO) links. Specifically, the RF link is used for supporting mobile communication, while the FSO link is adopted as the backhaul of the cellular infrastructure. Considering non-line-of-sight (NLoS) RF transmissions and a generalized atmospheric turbulence (AT) channel, the associated statistical features constituted of both the exact and the asymptotic moment generating functions (MGF) are derived in closed form. They are then used for calculating the ASER of M-ary phase shift keying (PSK), differentially encoded non-coherent PSK (DPSK) and non-coherent frequency-shift keying (FSK). A range of additional asymptotic expressions are also derived for all the modulation schemes under high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). It is observed from the asymptotic analysis that the ASERs of all the modulation schemes are dominated by the average SNR of the RF link in the hybrid relaying system using a fixed relay gain, while in the relaying system using a dynamic channel dependent relay gain, the ASERs of all the modulation schemes depend both on the average SNR and on the AT condition of the FSO path. We also find that the fixed-gain relaying strategy achieves twice the diversity order of the channel-dependent relaying strategy albeit at the cost of requiring a high power amplifier (PA) dynamic range at the relay node. Furthermore, by comparing the asymptotic ASERs, we calculate the SNR differences between the different modulation schemes in both the fixed-gain and the channel-dependent relaying system. Finally, simulation results are presented for confirming the accuracy of our expressions and observations.

Joint LDPC and Physical-layer Network Coding for Asynchronous Bi-directional Relaying

In practical asynchronous bi-directional relaying, symbols transmitted by two sources cannot arrive at the relay with perfect frame and symbol alignments and the asynchronous multiple-access channel (MAC) should be seriously considered. Recently, Lu et al. proposed a Tanner-graph representation of the symbol-asynchronous MAC with rectangular-pulse shaping and further developed the message-passing algorithm for optimal decoding of the symbol-asynchronous physical-layer network coding. In this paper, we present a general channel model for the asynchronous MAC with arbitrary pulse-shaping. Then, the Bahl, Cocke, Jelinek, and Raviv (BCJR) algorithm is developed for optimal decoding of the asynchronous MAC channel. For Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC)-coded BPSK signalling over the symbol-asynchronous MAC, we present a formal log-domain generalized sum-product-algorithm (Log-G-SPA) for efficient decoding. Furthermore, we propose to use cyclic codes for combating the frame-asynchronism and the resolution of the relative delay inherent in this approach can be achieved by employing the simple cyclic-redundancy-check (CRC) coding technique. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Joint Network and LDPC Coding for Bi-directional Relaying

In this paper, we consider joint network and LDPC coding for practically implementing the denosie-and-forward protocol over bi-directional relaying. the closed-form expressions for computing the log-likelihood ratios of the network-coded codewords have been derived for both real and complex multiple-access channels. It is revealed that the equivalent channel observed at the relay is an asymmetrical channel, where the channel input is the XOR form of the two source nodes.

On the BCJR Algorithm for Asynchronous Physical-layer Network Coding

In practical asynchronous bi-directional relaying, symbols transmitted by two source nodes cannot arrive at the relay with perfect symbol alignment and the symbol-asynchronous multiple-access channel (MAC) should be seriously considered. Recently, Lu et al. proposed a Tanner-graph representation of symbol-asynchronous MAC with rectangular-pulse shaping and further developed the message-passing algorithm for optimal decoding of the asynchronous physical-layer network coding. In this paper, we present a general channel model for the asynchronous multiple-access channel with arbitrary pulse-shaping. Then, the Bahl, Cocke, Jelinek, and Raviv (BCJR) algorithm is developed for optimal decoding of asynchronous MAC channel. This formulation can be well employed to develop various low-complexity algorithms, such as Log-MAP algorithm, Max-Log-MAP algorithm, which are favorable in practice.

Closed-Form Expressions for Relay Selection with Secrecy Constraints

An opportunistic relay selection based on instantaneous knowledge of channels is considered to increase security against eavesdroppers. The closed-form expressions are derived for the average secrecy rates and the outage probability when the cooperative networks use Decode-and-Forward (DF) or Amplify-and-Forward (AF) strategy. These techniques are demonstrated analytically and with simulation results.
