GBCNs: Genetic Binary Convolutional Networks for Enhancing the Performance of 1-bit DCNNs

Training 1-bit deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision, because it is much easier to get trapped into local minima than conventional DCNNs. The reason lies in that the binarized kernels and activations of 1-bit DCNNs cause a significant accuracy loss and training inefficiency. To address this problem, we propose Genetic Binary Convolutional Networks (GBCNs) to optimize 1-bit DCNNs, by introducing a new balanced Genetic Algorithm (BGA) to improve the representational ability in an end-to-end framework. The BGA method is proposed to modify the binary process of GBCNs to alleviate the local minima problem, which can significantly improve the performance of 1-bit DCNNs. We develop a new BGA module that is generic and flexible, and can be easily incorporated into existing DCNNs, such asWideResNets and ResNets. Extensive experiments on the object classification tasks (CIFAR, ImageNet) validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. To highlight, our method shows strong generalization on the object recognition task, i.e., face recognition, facial and person re-identification.

The $p$-adic Riemann Hypothesis For Expnonential Sums

The $L$-function of exponential sums associated to the generic polynomial of degree $d$ in $n$ variables over a finite field of characteristic $p$ is studied. A polygon called the Frobenius polygon of the generic polynomial of degree $d$ in $n$ variables over a finite field of characteristic $p$ is defined. A $p$-adic Riemann hypothesis is formulated. It asserts that the Newton polygon of the $L$-function coincides with the Frobenius polygon when $p$ is large enough. This $p$-adic Riemann hypothesis is proved when $n=2$ and $p\equiv-1({\rm mod }\ d)$. In general, it is proved that the Newton polygon of the $L$-function lies above the Frobenius polygon with coincide endpoints when $p$ is large enough.

Incidence Matrices of Finite Quadratic Spaces

In this paper, we first prove the 2-rank of full incidence matrix of PG(n,q) with $q$ an odd prime power. Then by the quadratic form defined on PG(n,q), the points of it are classified as isotropic and anisotropic points. We divide the full incidence matrix into four sub-matrices. Then by using the software package Magma, we give a general conjecture for the 2-rank of sub-matrices of the full incidence matrix in PG(n,q) and prove it in the case of n=1, 2.

Incidence Matrices of Polarized Projective Spaces

In this paper, we first define a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form on Fq^4. Then we get an incidence matrix G of Fq^4 by the bilinear form. By its corresponding quadratic form Q, the lines of Fq^4 are classified as isotropic and anisotropic lines. Under this classification, we can get two sub-matrices of G and prove their 2-rank. Key words and phrases: finite field, quadratic form, incidence matrix.

Semileptonic Charm Decays: mini review

One important task in the field of flavor physics is to over-constrain the CKM matrix. To best extract CKM matrix elements, we need inputs from both experimental data and theoretical calculations. Latest knowledge about the CKM matrix shows our understanding about sin$2β$ is the best thanks to clean theory and large statistics from experiments. In contrast, our understanding of both mixing and $|V_{ub}|$ have limitations from theoretical predictions. In order to extract the value of $|V_{ub}|$ from the branching fraction measurement, we need information on the hadronic form factor $f_+(q^2)$. Our best understanding about $f_+(q^2)$ is from lattice QCD calculations. To validate improved lattice QCD calculations for the form factor in semi-leptonic B decays, we can use semi-leptonic $D$ decays as a test and calibration. Since the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cs(d)}|$ can be obtained precisely from unitarity, we have a reliable method to check the lattice QCD calculations. The experimental results of $D$ semi-leptonic decays can be summarized in two main categories: the exclusive decays and the inclusive decays. Latest measurements from the exclusive semi-leptonic $D$ decays are discussed here.

Review of D Semi-leptonic Decays

Semi-leptonic D decays continue to play an important role in the field of flavor physics. During this presentation, recent measurements from pseudo-scalar to pseudo-scalar modes, pseudo-scalar to vector modes, and rare modes will be discussed. These results are important for many purposes, such as validating the machinery of lattice QCD, extracting CKM matrix elements, and searching for new physics and new interactions.

Twisted exponential sums of polynomials in one variable

The twisted $T$-adic exponential sum associated to a polynomial in one variable is studied. An explicit arithmetic polygon in terms of the highest two exponents of the polynomial is proved to be a lower bound of the Newton polygon of the $C$-function of the twisted T-adic exponential sum. This bound gives lower bounds for the Newton polygon of the $L$-function of twisted $p$-power order exponential sums.
