Completely Bounded Representations Into Von Neumann Algebras And Connes Embedding Problem

In this paper, we prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital separable $C^*$-algebra, $\mathcal{M}$ is a von Neumann algebra which has the Kirchberg's quotient weak expectation property (QWEP), and $ϕ:\, \mathcal{A}\rightarrow \mathcal{M}$ is a unital completely bounded representation, then there is an invertible operator $S\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $Sϕ(\cdot) S^{-1}$ is a $\ast$-representation. On the other hand, Gilles Pisier proved the following result: a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is nuclear if and only if for every unital completely bounded representation $ϕ$ of $\mathcal{A}$ into an arbitrary von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ there is an invertible operator $S\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $Sϕ(\cdot) S^{-1}$ is a $\ast$-representation. This implies that there exist von Neumann algebras which are not QWEP. Eberhard Kirchberg showed that every von Neumann algebra has QWEP if and only if every tracial von Neumann algebra embeds into the ultrapower $\mathcal{R}^w$ of the hyperfinite type ${\rm II}_1$ factor $\mathcal{R}$. This provides a negative answer to the Connes Embedding Problem. This paper relies on previous work of Gilles Pisier and Florin Pop.

On the third problem of Halmos on Banach spaces

Assume that $X$ is a complex separable infinite dimensional Banach space and $\mathcal{B}(X)$ denotes the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators from $X$ to itself. In 1970, P.R. Halmos raised ten open problems in Hilbert spaces. The third one is the following: If an intransitive operator $T$ has an inverse, is its inverse also intransitive? This question is closely related to the invariant subspace problem. Ever since Enflo's celebrated counterexample on $\ell_1$ answered the invariant subspace problem in negative, the Banach space setting of the third question of Halmos has become more interesting. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this problem under certain spectral conditions. As an application, we show that for an invertible operator $T$ with Dunford's Property ($C$), if $T^{-1}$ is intransitive and there exists a connected component $Ω$ of $intσ(T^{-1})^\land$ which is off the origin such that $Ω\capρ_F(T^{-1})\neq \emptyset$, then $T$ is also intransitive. In the end of the paper, we show that a sufficient and necessary condition for that there exists a bounded linear operator without non-trivial invariant subspaces on the infinite dimensional space $L_1(Ω,\sum,μ)$ (resp., $C(K)$, the space of bounded continuous functions on a complete metric space $K$) is that $(Ω,\sum,μ)$ is $σ$-finite (resp., $K$ is compact).

Geometric Similarity invariants of Cowen-Douglas Operators

In 1978, M. J. Cowen and R.G. Douglas introduce a class of operators (known as Cowen-Douglas class of operators) and associates a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle to such an operator in a very influential paper. They give a complete set of unitary invariants in terms of involving the curvature and its covariant partial derivatives. At the same time they ask: can one use geometric ideas to characterize completely the similarity invariants of Cowen-Douglas operators? We give a partial answer to this question. In this paper, we show that the curvature and the second fundamental form completely characterize the similarity invariants for a norm dense class of Cowen-Douglas operators.

Curvature and the Second fundamental form in classifying quasi-homogeneous holomorphic curves and operators in the Cowen-Douglas class

In this paper we study quasi-homogeneous operators, which include the homogeneous operators, in the Cowen-Douglas class. We give two separate theorems describing canonical models (with respect to equivalence under unitary and invertible operators, respectively) for these operators using techniques from complex geometry. This considerably extends the similarity and unitary classification of homogeneous operators in the Cowen-Douglas class obtained recently by the last author and A. Korányi. Specifically, the complex geometric invariants used for our classification are the curvature and the second fundamental forms inherent in the definition of a quasi-homogeneous operator. We show that these operators are irreducible and determine when they are strongly irreducible. Applications include the equality of the topological and algebraic K-group of a quasi-homogeneous operator and an affirmative answer to a well-known question of Halmos on similarity for these operators.

Flag structure for operators in the Cowen-Douglas class

The explicit description of homogeneous operators and localization of a Hilbert module naturally leads to the definition of a class of Cowen-Douglas operators possessing a flag structure. These operators are irreducible. We show that the flag structure is rigid in the sense that the unitary equivalence class of the operator and the flag structure determine each other. We obtain a complete set of unitary invariants which are somewhat more tractable than those of an arbitrary operator in the Cowen-Douglas class.

Noncommutative Uncertainty Principles

The classical uncertainty principles deal with functions on abelian groups. In this paper, we discuss the uncertainty principles for finite index subfactors which include the cases for finite groups and finite dimensional Kac algebras. We prove the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality, the Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. We characterize the minimizers of the uncertainty principles. We also prove that the minimizer is uniquely determined by the supports of itself and its Fourier transform. The proofs take the advantage of the analytic and the categorial perspectives of subfactor planar algebras. Our method to prove the uncertainty principles also works for more general cases, such as Popa's $λ$-lattices, modular tensor categories etc.

Rigidity of the flag structure for a class of Cowen-Douglas operators

The explicit description of irreducible homogeneous operators in the Cowen-Douglas class and the localization of Hilbert modules naturally leads to the definition of a smaller class of Cowen-Douglas operators possessing a flag structure. These operators are shown to be irreducible. It is also shown that the flag structure is rigid, that is, the unitary equivalence class of the operator and the flag structure determine each other. A complete set of unitary invariants, which are somewhat more tractable than those of an arbitrary operator in the Cowen-Douglas class, are obtained.

A similarity invariant of a class of n-normal operators in terms of K-theory

In this paper, we prove an analogue of the Jordan canonical form theorem for a class of $n$-normal operators on complex separable Hilbert spaces in terms of von Neumann's reduction theory. This is a continuation of our study of bounded linear operators, the commutants of which contain bounded maximal abelian set of idempotents. Furthermore, we give a complete similarity invariant for this class of operators by $K$-theory for Banach algebras.

Direct integrals of strongly irreducible operators

Strongly irreducible operators can be considered as building blocks for bounded linear operators on complex separable Hilbert spaces. Many bounded linear operators can be written as direct sums of at most countably many strongly irreducible operators. In this paper, we show that a bounded linear operator A is similar to a direct integral of strongly irreducible operators if its commutant contains a bounded maximal abelian set of idempotents. We find that bounded linear operators which are similar to direct integrals of strongly irreducible operators form a dense subset of L(H) in the operator norm.

On generalized universal irrational rotation algebras and the operator $u+v$

We introduce a class of generalized universal irrational rotation $C^*$-algebras $A_{θ,γ}=C^*(x,w)$ which is characterized by the relations $w^*w=ww^*=1$, $x^*x=γ(w)$, $xx^*=γ(e^{-2πiθ}w)$, and $xw=e^{-2πiθ}wx$, where $θ$ is an irrational number and $γ(z)\in C(\mathbb{T})$ is a positive function. We characterize tracial linear functionals, simplicity, and $K$-groups of $A_{θ,γ}$ in terms of zero points of $γ(z)$. We show that if $A_{θ,γ}$ is simple then $A_{θ,γ}$ is an $A{\mathbb T}$-algebra of real rank zero. We classify $A_{θ,γ}$ in terms of $θ$ and zero points of $γ(z)$. Let $A_θ=C^*(u,v)$ be the universal irrational rotation $C^*$-algebra with $vu=e^{2πiθ}uv$. Then $C^*(u+v)\cong A_{θ,|1+z|^2}$. As an application, we show that $C^*(u+v)$ is a proper simple $C^*$-subalgebra of $A_θ$ which has a unique trace, $K_1(C^*(u+v))\cong \mathbb{Z}$, and there is an order isomorphism of $K_0(C^*(u+v))$ onto $\mathbb{Z}+\mathbb{Z}θ$. {Moreover, $C^*(u+v)$ is a unital simple $A{\mathbb T}$-algebra of real rank zero.} We also calculate the spectrum and the Brown measure of $u+v$.
