Detecting Heavy Higgs Bosons from Natural SUSY at a 100 TeV Hadron Collider

Supersymmetric models with radiatively-driven naturalness (RNS) enjoy low electroweak fine-tuning whilst respecting LHC search limits on gluinos and top squarks and allowing for $m_h\simeq 125$ GeV. While the heavier Higgs bosons $H,\ A$ may have TeV-scale masses, the SUSY conserving $μ$ parameter must lie in the few hundred GeV range. Thus, in natural SUSY models there should occur large heavy Higgs boson branching fractions to electroweakinos, with Higgs boson decays to higgsino plus gaugino dominating when they are kinematically accessible. These SUSY decays can open up new avenues for discovery. We investigate the prospects of discovering heavy neutral Higgs bosons $H$ and $A$ decaying into light plus heavy chargino pairs which can yield a four isolated lepton plus missing transverse energy signature at the LHC and at a future 100 TeV $pp$ collider. We find that discovery of heavy Higgs decay to electroweakinos via its $4\ell$ decay mode is very difficult at HL-LHC. For FCC-hh or SPPC, we study the $H,\ A \to $ SUSY reaction along with dominant physics backgrounds from the Standard Model and devise suitable selection requirements to extract a clean signal for FCC-hh or SPPC with $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV, assuming an integrated luminosity of 15 $ab^{-1}$. We find that while a conventional cut-and-count analysis yields a signal statistical significance greater than $5σ$ for $m_{A,H}\sim 1.1-1.65$ TeV, a boosted-decision-tree analysis allows for heavy Higgs signal discovery at FCC-hh or SPPC for $m_{A,H}\sim 1-2$ TeV.

Self Coupling of the Higgs boson in the processes $p\,p\,\rightarrow\,ZHHH+X$ and $p\,p\,\rightarrow\,WHHH+X$

To gain some sense about the likelihood of measuring the Higgs boson quartic coupling, we calculate the contribution to the triple Higgs production cross section from the subprocesses $q\bar{q}\to ZHHH$ and $q\bar{q}'\to WHHH$. Our results illustrate that determining this coupling, or even providing experimental evidence that it exists, will be very difficult.

Flavor Changing Heavy Higgs Interactions at the LHC

A general two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) is adopted to study the signature of flavor changing neutral Higgs (FCNH) decay $ϕ^0 \to t\bar{c}+\bar{t}c$, where $ϕ^0$ could be a CP-even scalar ($H^0$) or a CP-odd pseudoscalar ($A^0$). Measurement of the light 125 GeV neutral Higgs boson ($h^0$) couplings at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) favor the decoupling limit or the alignment limit of a 2HDM, in which gauge boson and diagonal fermion couplings of $h^0$ approach Standard Model values. In such limit, FCNH couplings of $h^0$ are naturally suppressed by a small mixing parameter $\cos(β-α)$, while the off-diagonal couplings of heavier neutral scalars $ϕ^0$ are sustained by $\sin(β-α) \sim 1$. We study physics background from dominant processes with realistic acceptance cuts and tagging efficiencies. Promising results are found for the LHC running at 13 or 14 TeV collision energies.

Interference effects and the use of Higgs boson pair production to study the Higgs trilinear self coupling

We show that the dominant channel proposed for the determination of the Higgs boson trilinear coupling, $pp\to HH+X$ via gluon fusion, exhibits an interference structure that is independent of the collider energy for collider energies in the range $8\,{\rm TeV}\leq \sqrt{s}\leq 100\,{\rm TeV}$ and is almost maximally destructive. This insensitivity to the collider energy remains approximately true for a variety of other two Higgs production mechanisms although the magnitude of the interference varies widely.

Comparison of $H\to\ell\bar{\ell}γ$ and $H\toγ\,Z, Z\to\ell\bar{\ell}$ including the ATLAS cuts

A precise comparison is made between the Dalitz decay $H\to\ell\bar{\ell}γ$ and the two body decay $H\toγZ,Z\to\ell\bar{\ell}$ for electrons and for muons including experimental cuts appropriate for the ATLAS detector. The widths for these two processes differ by 8% for electrons and 3% for muons. Given that there remain QCD radiative corrections of this order that are not included, this suggests that the isolation of the Dalitz decay will be challenging.

Unveiling the MSSM Neutral Higgs Bosons with Leptons and a Bottom Quark

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons produced with a bottom quark where the Higgs decays into a pair of tau leptons and the taus decay into an electron-muon pair, i.e. $bg \to bϕ^0 \to bτ^+τ^- \to be^\pmμ^\mp + E\!\!\!/_T$, $ϕ^0 = h^0, H^0, A^0$. Our study has been done within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider the dominant physics backgrounds including the production of Drell-Yan processes ($bτ^+τ^-$ and $jτ^+τ^-, j = q, g$), top quark pair ($t\bar{t}$), $tW$ and $jWW$ with realistic acceptance cuts and efficiencies. We present $5σ$ discovery contours for the neutral Higgs bosons in the ($M_A,\tanβ$) plane as well as the region with a favored light Higgs mass (123 GeV $\le m_h\le$ 129 GeV). Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar ($A^0$) and the heavier CP-even scalar ($H^0$) Higgs bosons with masses up to 800 GeV and $\tanβ\simeq 50$ at the LHC with a center of mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity ($L$) of 300 fb$^{-1}$. With $\sqrt{s} =$ 14 TeV and $L =$ 3000 fb$^{-1}$, LHC will be able to discover the Higgs pseudoscalar and the heavier Higgs scalar beyond $M_A = 1000$ GeV.

When the Higgs meets the Top: Search for t --> ch^0 at the LHC

The newly discovered "Higgs" boson h^0, being lighter than the top quark t, opens up new probes for flavor and mass generation. In the general two Higgs doublet model, new ct, cc and tt Yukawa couplings could modify h^0 properties. If t --> ch^0 occurs at the percent level, the observed ZZ^* and γγsignal events may have accompanying cbW activity coming from t\bar{t} feeddown. We suggest that t --> ch^0 can be searched for via h^0 --> ZZ^*, γγ, WW^* and b\bar{b}, perhaps even τ^+τ^- modes in t\bar{t} events. Existing data might be able to reveal some clues for t --> ch^0 signature, or push the branching ratio B(t --> ch^0) down to below the percent level.

Top Decays with Flavor Changing Neutral Higgs Interactions at the LHC

We investigate the prospects for discovering a top quark decaying into one light Higgs boson along with a charm quark in top quark pair production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A general two Higgs doublet model is adopted to study the signature of flavor changing neutral Higgs decay $t \to cϕ^0$, %or $\bar{t} \to \bar{c}ϕ^0$ where $ϕ^0$ could be CP-even ($H^0$) or CP-odd ($A^0$). The dominant physics background is evaluated with realistic acceptance cuts as well as tagging and mistagging efficiencies. For a reasonably large top-charm-Higgs coupling ($λ_{tc}/λ_{t} \agt 0.09$), the abundance of signal events and the %that our acceptance cuts reduction in physics background allow us to establish a $5σ$ signal for $M_ϕ\sim 125$ GeV at the LHC with a center of mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 8 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$. The discovery potential will be greatly enhanced with the full energy of $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV.

Exploring neutralino dark matter resonance annihilation via bA,bH -> b mu^+ mu^- at the LHC

One of the main channels which allows for a large rate of neutralino dark matter annihilation in the early Universe is via the pseudoscalar Higgs A-resonance. In this case, the measured dark matter abundance can be obtained in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model when tan(beta)\sim 50 and 2m_{\tz_1}\sim m_A. We investigate the reaction pp\to bϕ\to bμ^+μ^- +X (where ϕ=A or H) at the CERN LHC where requiring the tag of a single b-jet allows for amplification of the signal-to-background ratio. The rare but observable Higgs decay to muon pairs allows for a precise measurement of the Higgs boson mass and decay width. We evaluate signal and background using CalcHEP, with muon energy smearing according to the CMS detector. We find that the Higgs width (Γ_A) can typically be determined with the accuracy up to \sim 8% (\sim 17%) for m_A\sim 400 (600) GeV assuming 10^3 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. Therefore, the pp\to bϕ\to bμ^+μ^- +X process provides a unique possibility for direct Γ_A measurement at the LHC. While the Higgs width is correlated with the parameter \tanβfor a given value of m_A, extracting \tanβis complicated by an overlap of the A and H peaks, radiative corrections to the b and τYukawa couplings, and the possibility that SUSY decay modes of the Higgs may be open. In the case where a dilepton mass edge from \tz_2\to\ell^+\ell^-\tz_1 is visible, it should be possible to test the relation that 2m_{\tz_1}\sim m_A.

Prospects for Higgs Searches with the Tri-bottom Channel in Unified SUSY Models

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of a neutral Higgs boson produced in association with a $b$ quark, followed by the Higgs decay into a pair of bottom quarks, $pp \to bϕ^0 \to b b\bar{b} +X$, at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) within the framework of unified supersymmetric models. The Higgs boson $ϕ^0$ can be a heavy scalar $H^0$ or a pseudoscalar $A^0$. Furthermore, this direct discovery channel is compared with the indirect Higgs searches in the rare decay $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ at hadron colliders. Promising results are found for the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model, the anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model, and the gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) model. We find that the indirect search for $B(B_s \to μ^+μ^-) \ge 5\times 10^{-9}$ is complementary to the direct search for $bϕ^0 \to bb\bar{b}$ with $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV and an integrated luminosity ($L$) of 300 fb$^{-1}$. In the AMSB and GMSB models, $bϕ^0 \to bb\bar{b}$ with $L = 300$ fb$^{-1}$ covers a larger area in the parameter space than $B(B_s \to μ^+μ^-) \ge 5\times 10^{-9}$. In addition, we present constraints from $b \to sγ$ and muon anomalous dipole moment ($Δa_μ$) on the parameter space.

Searching for Colorons at the Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive color-octet vector bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (colorons, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pions, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g,7g1q, 6g2q$, and $5g3q$, and determine the masses of $\tildeπ$ and $\tildeρ$ where discovery is possible. For example, we find that a 5$σ$ signal can be established for $M_{\tildeπ} \alt 495$ GeV ($M_{\tildeρ} \alt 1650$ GeV). More generally we give the reach of this process for a selection of possible cuts and integrated luminosities.

Discovering Colorons at the Early Stage LHC

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive hyper-gluons using data from the early runs of the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (coloron, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pion, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g$, $7g1q$, $6g2q$, and $5g3q$. We find an abundance of signal events and that realistic cuts reduce the background enough to establish a $5σ$ signal for $m_{\tildeπ} \alt 220$ GeV or $m_{\tildeρ} \alt 733$ GeV.

Detecting a Higgs Pseudoscalar with a Z Boson Produced in Bottom Quark Fusion

We investigate the prospects of detecting a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$) in association with a $Z$ gauge boson produced from bottom quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A general two Higgs doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model are adopted to study the discovery potential of $pp \to ZA^0 \to \ell \bar{\ell} b\bar{b} +X (\ell = e, μ)$, via $b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$ with physics backgrounds and realistic cuts. Promising results are found for $m_A \alt 400$ GeV in a general two Higgs doublet model when the heavier Higgs scalar ($H^0$) can decay into a $Z$ boson and a Higgs pseudoscalar ($H^0 \to ZA^0$). We compare the production rates from bottom quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$) and gluon fusion ($gg \to ZA^0$) and find that they are complementary processes to produce $ZA^0$ in hadron collisions. While gluon fusion is the major source for producing a Higgs pseudoscalar associated with a $Z$ boson at the LHC for $\tanβ\alt 10$, bottom quark fusion can make dominant contributions for $\tanβ\agt 10$.

Detecting a Higgs Pseudoscalar with a $Z$ Boson at the LHC

We have adopted two Higgs doublet models to study the production of a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$) in association with a $Z$ gauge boson from gluon fusion ($gg \to ZA^0$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The prospects for the discovery of $ZA^0 \to \ell \bar{\ell} b\bar{b}$ are investigated with physics backgrounds and realistic cuts. Promising results are found for $m_A \alt 260$ GeV in two Higgs doublet models when the heavier Higgs scalar ($H^0$) can decay into a $Z$ boson and a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$). Although the cross section of $gg \to ZA^0$ is usually small in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, it can be significantly enhanced in general two Higgs doublet models. This discovery channel might provide an opportunity to search for a Higgs scalar and a Higgs pseudoscalar simultaneously at the LHC and could lead to new physics beyond the Standard Model and the minimal supersymmetric model.

Searching for the Higgs Bosons of Minimal Supersymmetry with Muon Pairs and Bottom Quarks

The prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons (phi^0 = H^0, h^0, A^0) produced with bottom quarks via Higgs decays into muon pairs (pp --> b b-bar phi^0 --> b b-bar mu mu-bar +X) at the CERN LHC are investigated in the minimal supersymmetric model. The complete physics background from the production of b b-bar mu mu-bar, b b-bar W^+ W^- (including t t-bar) and jj mu mu-bar, j = g, u, d, s, c in the Standard Model is calculated with realistic acceptance cuts. This discovery mode has a simple production mechanism from gg --> b b-bar phi^0 with its cross section proportional to 1/cos^2(beta) and could provide an opportunity to measure tan(beta) and the b b-bar phi^0 couplings. In addition, we compare the associated discovery mode above with the inclusive discovery channel pp --> phi^0 --> mu mu-bar +X. Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar (A^0) and the heavier CP-even scalar (H^0) Higgs bosons for tan(beta) equivalent to v_2/v_1 >~ 14 and m_A,m_H <~ 325 GeV.

Constraints on extra dimensions from cosmological and terrestrial measurements

If quantum fields exist in extra compact dimensions, they will give rise to a quantum vacuum or Casimir energy. That vacuum energy will manifest itself as a cosmological constant. The fact that supernova and cosmic microwave background data indicate that the cosmological constant is of the same order as the critical mass density to close the universe supplies a lower bound on the size of the extra dimensions. Recent laboratory constraints on deviations from Newton's law place an upper limit. The allowed region is so small as to suggest that either extra compact dimensions do not exist, or their properties are about to be tightly constrained by experimental data.

Production of Z Boson Pairs via Gluon Fusion in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model

We present the full one-loop calculation for $gg \to ZZ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM) including nonresonant contributions from the squark loop diagrams and provide analytical expressions for the helicity amplitudes. The one-loop process $gg \to ZZ$ via quark loops has been calculated in the Standard Model. In supersymmetric models, additional contributions arise from squark loops. In some regions of the MSSM parameter space, the top and bottom squark loops can make important contributions to the diagrams involving Higgs bosons. The heavy Higgs scalar (H) might be detected at the Large Hadron Collider via $gg \to H \to ZZ$ for $\tanβ\alt 5$.

Parity Violation in Bottom Quark Pair Production at Polarized Hadron Colliders

Parity violation induced by the chromo-anapole form factor of the bottom quark, generated from weak corrections, is studied in polarized hadron collisions. The forward-backward asymmetry in the bottom quark pair production at polarized $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ colliders is evaluated in the Standard Model and in a Two Higgs Doublet Model to examine the effects of parity violation. In the models studied, promising results are found for polarized $p\bar{p}$ colliders.

Relic Density of Neutralino Dark Matter in Supergravity Models

We calculate the relic density ($Ω_{χ^0_1} h^2$) of neutralino dark matter in supergravity models with radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, for values of the Higgs sector parameter $\tanβ\equiv v_2/v_1$ between the two infrared fixed points of the top quark Yukawa coupling, $\tanβ\simeq 1.8$ and $\tanβ\simeq 56$. For $\tanβ\alt 10$, the CP-odd Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$) and the heavier CP-even Higgs scalar ($H^0$) are much heavier than the lightest neutralino ($χ^0_1$), and the annihilation cross section of $χ^0_1$ pairs is significantly enhanced only in the vicinity of the lighter CP-even Higgs boson ($h^0$) and the $Z$ boson poles. For $\tanβ\agt 40$, $m_A$ and $m_H$ become comparable to $2m_{χ^0_1}$, and the neutralino annihilation cross section can be significantly enhanced by the poles of the $H^0$ and the $A^0$ as well. For a cosmologically interesting relic density, $0.1 \alt Ω_{χ^0_1} h^2 \alt 0.5$, we find that the supergravity parameter space is tightly constrained. The mass spectra for supersymmetric particles are presented for unification mass parameters in the cosmologically interesting region.

The Muon Electric Dipole Moment

The electric dipole moment of the muon ($d_μ$) is evaluated in a two Higgs doublet model with a softly broken discrete symmetry. For $\tanβ\equiv |v_2|/|v_1| \sim 1$, contributions from two loop diagrams involving the $t$ quark and the $W$ boson dominate; while for $\tanβ\gsim 10$, contributions from two loop diagrams involving the $b$ quark and the $τ$ lepton are dominant. For $8 \gsim \tanβ\gsim 4$, significant cancellation occurs among the contributions from two loop diagrams and the one loop contribution dominates for $\tanβ\sim 7$. For $\tanβ\gsim 15$, the calculated $d_μ$ can be close to the reach of a recently proposed experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Production of CP-Odd Higgs Bosons with Large Transverse Momentum at Hadron Supercolliders

A two Higgs doublet model is employed to study the production of a CP-odd Higgs boson ($A$) associated with a large transverse momentum jet ($j$) at hadron supercolliders. The cross section of $pp \to jA+X$ is evaluated with four subprocesses: $gg \to gA$, $gq \to qA$, $g\bar{q} \to \bar{q}A$ and $q\bar{q} \to gA$. We find that $pp \to jA+X$ is a significant source of CP-odd Higgs bosons at future hadron supercolliders.
