Universal lepton universality violation in exclusive processes

In high energy exclusive processes involving leptons, QED corrections can be sensitive to infrared scales like the lepton mass and the soft photon energy cut, resulting in large logarithms that need to be resummed to all order in $α$. When considering the ratio of the exclusive processes between two different lepton flavors, the ratio $R$ can be expressed in terms of factorized functions in the decoupled leptonic sectors. While some of the functional terms cancel, there remain the large logarithms due to the lepton mass difference and the energy cut. This factorization process can be universally applied to the exclusive processes such as $Z\to l^+l^-$ and $B^-\to l^-\barν_l$, where the resummed result in the ratio gives significant deviations from the naive expectation from lepton universality.

End-point resummation in squark decays

We study soft and collinear gluon emission in squark decays to quark--neutralino pair, at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy in the end-point region, using Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), and at next-to-leading (NLO) fixed order in the rest of the phase space. As a phenomenological case study we discuss the impact of radiative corrections on the simultaneous measurements of squark and neutralino masses at a linear $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider based on $\sqrt{s} = 3$ TeV Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). Since the majority of mass measurement techniques are based on edges in kinematic distributions, and these change appreciably when there is additional QCD radiation in the final state, the knowledge of higher-order QCD effects is required for precise mass determinations.

Effective field theory approach to heavy quark fragmentation

Using an approach based on Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) and Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) we determine the $b$-quark fragmentation function from electron-positron annihilation data at the $Z$-boson peak at next-to-next-to leading order, with next-to-next-to leading log resummation of DGLAP logarithms, and next-to-next-to-next-to leading log resummation of endpoint logarithms. This analysis improves, by one order, the previous extraction of the $b$-quark fragmentation function. We find that while the addition of the next order in the calculation does not much shift the extracted form of the fragmentation function, it does reduce theoretical errors indicating that the expansion is converging. Using an approach based on effective field theory allows us to systematically control theoretical errors. While the fits of theory to data are generally good, the fits seem to be hinting that higher order correction from HQET may be needed to explain the $b$-quark fragmentation function at smaller values of momentum fraction.

Fragmentation of a Jet with Small Radius

In this paper we consider the fragmentation of a parton into a jet with small jet radius $R$. Perturbatively, logarithms of $R$ can appear, which for narrow jets can lead to large corrections. Using soft-collinear effective theory, we introduce the fragmentation function to a jet (FFJ), which describes the fragmentation of a parton into a jet. We discuss how these objects are related to the standard jet functions. Calculating the FFJ to next-to-leading order, we show that these objects satisfy the standard Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations, with a natural scale that depends upon $R$. By using the standard renormalization group evolution, we can therefore resum logarithms of $R$. We further use the soft-collinear effective theory to prove a factorization theorem where the FFJs naturally appear, for the fragmentation of a hadron within a jet with small $R$. Finally, we also show how this formalism can be used to resum the ratio of jet radii for a subjet to be emitted from within a fat jet.

Analysis of exclusive $k_T$ jet algorithms in electron-positron annihilation

We study the factorization of the dijet cross section in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation using the generalized exclusive jet algorithm which includes the cone-type, the JADE, the $k_T$, the anti-$k_T$ and the Cambridge/Aachen jet algorithms as special cases. In order to probe the characteristics of the jet algorithms in a unified way, we consider the generalized $k_T$ jet algorithm with an arbitrary weight of the energies, in which various types of the $k_T$-type algorithms are included for specific values of the parameter. We show that the jet algorithm respects the factorization property for the parameter $α<2$. The factorized jet function and the soft function are well defined and infrared safe for all the jet algorithms except the $k_T$ algorithm. The $k_T$ algorithm ($α=2$) breaks the factorization since the jet and the soft functions are infrared divergent and are not defined for $α=2$, though the dijet cross section is infrared finite. In the jet algorithms which enable factorization, we give a phenomenological analysis using the resummed and the fixed-order results.

Factorization of the dijet cross section in electron-positron annihilation with jet algorithms

We analyze the effects of jet algorithms on each factorized part of the dijet cross sections in $e^+ e^-$ scattering using the soft-collinear effective theory. The jet function and the soft function with a cone-type jet algorithm and the Sterman-Weinberg jet algorithm are computed to next-to-leading order in $α_s$, and are shown to be infrared finite using the dimensional regularization. The integrated and unintegrated jet functions are presented, and compared with other types of jet functions.

Production of Stoponium at the LHC

Although the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has not observed supersymmetric (SUSY) partners of the Standard Model particles, their existence is not ruled out yet. One recently explored scenario in which there are light SUSY partners that have evaded current bounds from the LHC is that of a light long-lived stop quark. In this paper we consider light stop pair production at the LHC when the stop mass is between 200 and 400 GeV. If the stops are long-lived they can form a bound state, stoponium, which then undergoes two-body decays to Standard Model particles. By considering the near-threshold production of such a pair through the gluon-gluon fusion process and taking into account the strong Coulombic interactions responsible for the formation of this bound state, we obtain factorization theorems for the stop pair inclusive and differential production cross sections. We also perform a resummation of large threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using well-established renormalization group equations in an effective field theory methodology. These results are used to calculate the invariant mass distributions of two photons or two Z bosons coming from the decay of the stoponium at the LHC. For our choices of SUSY model parameters, the stoponium is not detectable above Standard Model backgrounds in γγor ZZ at 8 TeV, but will be visible with 400 fb^(-1) of accumulated data if its mass is below 500 GeV when the LHC runs at 14 TeV.

Factorization theorem for high-energy scattering near the endpoint

A consistent factorization theorem is presented in the framework of effective field theories. Conventional factorization suffers from infrared divergences in the soft and collinear parts. We present a factorization theorem in which the infrared divergences appear only in the parton distribution functions by carefully reorganizing collinear and soft parts. The central idea is extracting the soft contributions from the collinear part to avoid double counting. Combining it with the original soft part, an infrared-finite kernel is obtained. This factorization procedure can be applied to various high-energy scattering processes.

Proper factorization theorems in high-energy scattering near the endpoint

Consistent factorization theorems in high-energy scattering near the threshold are presented in the framework of the soft-collinear effective theory. Traditional factorization theorem separates the soft and collinear parts successfully, but a final step should be supplemented if each part encounters infrared divergence. We present factorization theorems in which the infrared divergences appear only in the parton distribution functions and the infrared divergence is removed by carefully separating and reorganizing collinear and soft parts. The underlying physical idea is to isolate and remove the soft contributions systematically from the collinear part in loop corrections order by order. After this procedure, each factorized term in the scattering cross sections is free of infrared divergence, and can be safely computed using perturbation theory. This factorization procedure can be applied to various high-energy scattering processes. We show factorization theorems in Drell-Yan processes, deep inelastic scattering and Higgs production near the endpoint.

Structure of divergences in Drell-Yan process with small transverse momentum

We consider the structure of divergences in Drell-Yan process with small transverse momentum. The factorization proof is not trivial because various kinds of divergences are intertwined in the collinear and soft parts at high orders. We prescribe a method to disentangle the divergences in the framework of the soft-collinear effective theory. The rapidity divergence is handled by introducing the $δ$ regulator in the collinear Wilson lines. The collinear part, which consists of the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF), is free of the rapidity divergence after the soft zero-bin subtraction. There still remains the problem of mixing between the ultraviolet and infrared divergences, which forbids the renormalization group description. We show that the mixing is cancelled by the soft function. This suggests that the collinear and soft parts should be treated as a whole in constructing a consistent factorization theorem. The renormalization group behavior of the combined collinear and soft parts is presented explicitly at one loop. We also show that the integrated PDF can be obtained by integrating the TMDPDF over the transverse momentum.

Chiral orbital-angular-momentum in the surface states of Bi2Se3

Locking of the spin of a quasi-particle to its momentum in split bands of on the surfaces of metals and topological insulators (TIs) is understood in terms of Rashba effect where a free electron in the surface states feels an effective magnetic field. On the other hand, the orbital part of the angular momentum (OAM) is usually neglected. We performed angle resolved photoemission experiments with circularly polarized lights and first principles density functional calculation with spin-orbit coupling on a TI, Bi2Se3, to study the local OAM of the surface states. We show from the results that OAM in the surface states of Bi2Se3 is significant and locked to the electron momentum in opposite direction to the spin, forming chiral OAM states. Our finding opens a new possibility to have strong light-induced spin-polarized current in the surface states.

Electronic Structure Studies of Detwinned BaFe$_2$As$_2$ by Photoemission

We performed angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on mechanically detwinned BaFe2As2. We observe clear band dispersions and the shapes and characters of the Fermi surfaces are identified. Shapes of the two hole pockets around the Γ-point are found to be consistent with the Fermi surface topology predicted in the orbital ordered states. Dirac-cone like band dispersions near the Γ-point are clearly identified as theoretically predicted. At the X-point, split bands remain intact in spite of detwinning, barring twinning origin of the bands. The observed band dispersions are compared with calculated band structures. With a magnetic moment of 0.2 ?B per iron atom, there is a good agreement between the calculation and experiment.

Observation of warping effects in the band and angular momentum structures of topological insulator Bi2Te3

We performed angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments on Bi2Te3 with circularly polarized light. ARPES data show very strong circular dichroism, indicating existence of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Moreover, the alignment of OAM is found to have a strong binding energy dependence. Such energy dependence comes from a relatively strong band warping effect in Bi2Te3 compared to Bi2Se3. OAM close to Dirac point has an ideal chiral structure (sin ?) without out-of-plane component. Warping effect comes in as the binding energy decreases and circular dichroism along a constant energy contour can no longer be explained by a simple sin? function but requires a sin3? term. When the warping effect becomes even stronger near the Fermi energy, circular dichroism gains an additional sin6? term. Such behavior is found to be compatible with the theoretically predicted OAM structure.

Endpoint behavior of high-energy scattering cross sections

In high-energy processes near the endpoint, there emerge new contributions associated with spectator interactions. Away from the endpoint region, these new contributions are suppressed compared to the leading contribution, but the leading contribution becomes suppressed as we approach the endpoint and the new contributions become comparable. We present how the new contributions scale as we reach the endpoint and show that they are comparable to the suppressed leading contributions in deep-inelastic scattering by employing a power counting analysis. The hadronic tensor in deep-inelastic scattering is shown to factorize including the spectator interactions, and it can be expressed in terms of the lightcone distribution amplitudes of initial hadrons. We also consider the contribution of the spectator contributions in Drell-Yan processes. Here the spectator interactions are suppressed compared to double parton annihilation according to the power counting.

Pair Production of Color-Octet Scalars at the LHC

Heavy colored scalar particles, which exist in many models of new physics, can be pair produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via gluon-gluon fusion and possibly form quarkonium-like bound states. If the scalars are also charged under the electroweak gauge group, these bound states can then decay into electroweak bosons. This yields a resonant cross section for final states such as gamma gamma that can exceed Standard Model backgrounds. This paper studies this process in the Manohar-Wise model of color-octet scalars (COS). Important threshold logarithms and final state Coulomb-like QCD interactions are resummed using effective field theory. We compute the resummed cross section for gluon-gluon fusion to COS pairs at the LHC as well as the resonant cross section for octetonium decaying to gamma gamma. The latter cross section exceeds the Standard Model di-photon cross section when the COS mass is less than 500 (350) GeV for sqrt{s} = 14 (7) TeV. Nonobservation of resonances below these energies can significantly improve existing bounds on COS masses.

Octetonium at the LHC

Several models of new physics, such as grand unified theories, Pati-Salam models, chiral color models, etc., predict the existence of an $SU(2)_L$ doublet of color-octet scalars (COS). In the Manohar-Wise model, the Yukawa couplings of the COS are assumed to be consistent with Minimal Flavor Violation ensuring constraints from flavor physics are satisfied even for relatively light scalars. In this simple model we consider the production of color singlet bound states of COS that we call octetonium. Octetonium are mainly produced via gluon-gluon fusion and have significant production cross sections at the LHC. They can decay to pairs of gluons or electroweak gauge bosons. If the masses of the octetonia are 1 TeV or less, these states will be visible as resonances in $γγ, W^+W^-, ZZ$, and $ γZ$.

Quasi-particle scattering and protected nature of topological states in a parent topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$

We report on angle resolved photoemission spectroscopic studies on a parent topological insulator (TI), Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The line width of the spectral function (inverse of the quasi-particle lifetime) of the topological metallic (TM) states shows an anomalous behavior. This behavior can be reasonably accounted for by assuming decay of the quasi-particles predominantly into bulk electronic states through electron-electron interaction and defect scattering. Studies on aged surfaces reveal that topological metallic states are very much unaffected by the potentials created by adsorbed atoms or molecules on the surface, indicating that topological states could be indeed protected against weak perturbations.

SCET sum rules for heavy-to-light form factors

We consider a sum rule for heavy-to-light form factors in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). Using the correlation function given by the time-ordered product of a heavy-to-light current and its hermitian conjugate, the heavy-to-light soft form factor zeta_P can be related to the leading-order B meson shape function. Using the scaling behavior of the heavy-to-light form factor in Lambda_QCD/m_b, we put a constraint on the behavior of the $B$ meson shape function near the endpoint. We employ the sum rule to estimate the size of zeta_P with the model for the shape function and find that it ranges from 0.01 to 0.07.

Collinear effective theory at subleading order and its application to heavy-light currents

We consider a collinear effective theory of highly energetic quarks with energy E, interacting with collinear and soft gluons by integrating out collinear degrees of freedom to subleading order. The collinear effective theory offers a systematic expansion in power series of a small parameter lambda ~ p_{\perp}/E, where p_{\perp} is the transverse momentum of a collinear particle. We construct the effective Lagrangian to first order in $λ$, and discuss its features including additional symmetries such as collinear gauge invariance and reparameterization invariance. Heavy-light currents can be matched from the full theory onto the operators in the collinear effective theory at one loop and to order lambda. We obtain heavy-light current operators in the effective theory, calculate their Wilson coefficients at this order, and the renormalization group equations for the Wilson coefficients are solved. As an application, we calculate the form factors for decays of B mesons to light energetic mesons to order lambda and at leading-logarithmic order in alpha_s.
