Naturally Self-Tuned Low Mass Composite Scalars

Scalar bosons composed of a pair of chiral fermions in a non-confining potential have an effective Yukawa coupling, $g$, to free external chiral fermions. At large distance a Feynman loop of external fermions generates a scale invariant potential, $V_{loop}\propto -g^2/{r^{2}}$, which acts on valence fermions for separation $ρ=2r$. This generally forces the $s$-wave ground state to deform to a static, zero mass, configuration, and for slowly running, perturbative $g$, a large external "shroud" wave-function forms. This is related to old results of Landau and Lifshitz in quantum mechanics. The massless composite scalar boson ground state is then an extended object. Infra-red effects can generate a small mass for the system. This points to a perturbative BEH-boson composed of top and anti-top quarks and a novel dynamical mechanism for spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking.

Composite Higgs Bosons and Mini Black Holes

Pairs of standard model fermions can annihilate to produce mini black holes with gauge quantum numbers of the Higgs boson at $M_{Planck}$. This leads to a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at the Planck scale with strong coupling which binds fermion pairs into Higgs fields. At critical coupling the renormalization group dresses these objects, which then descend in scale to emerge as OBSERVABLE boundstate Higgs bosons at low energies, and we obtain the multi-Higgs spectrum of a "scalar democracy." The observed Higgs boson is a gravitationally bound $\bar{t}t$ composite. Sequential states may be seen at the LHC, and/or its upgrades.

Gravitational Contact Interactions and the Physical Equivalence of Weyl Transformations in Effective Field Theory

Theories of scalars and gravity, with non-minimal interactions, $\sim (M_P^2 +F(ϕ) )R +L(ϕ)$, have graviton exchange induced contact terms. These terms arise in single particle reducible diagrams with vertices $\propto q^2$ that cancel the Feynman propagator denominator $1/q^2$ and are familiar in various other physical contexts. In gravity these lead to additional terms in the action such as $\sim F(ϕ) T_μ^μ(ϕ)/M_P^2$ and $F(ϕ)\partial^2 F(ϕ)/M_P^2$. The contact terms are equivalent to induced operators obtained by a Weyl transformation that removes the non-minimal interactions, leaving a minimal Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action. This demonstrates explicitly the equivalence of different representations of the action under Weyl transformations, both classically and quantum mechanically. To avoid such "hidden contact terms" one is compelled to go to the minimal Einstein-Hilbert representation.

Is the Higgs Boson Composed of Neutrinos?

We show that conventional Higgs compositeness conditions can be achieved by the running of large Higgs-Yukawa couplings involving right-handed neutrinos that become active at $\sim 10^{13}- 10^{14}$ GeV. Together with a somewhat enhanced quartic coupling, arising by a Higgs portal interaction to a dark matter sector, we can obtain a Higgs boson composed of neutrinos. This is a "next-to-minimal" dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking scheme.

Natural Top-Bottom Mass Hierarchy in Composite Higgs Models

We consider composite two-Higgs doublet models based on gauge-Yukawa theories with strongly interacting fermions generating the top-bottom mass hierarchy. The model features a single "universal" Higgs-Yukawa coupling, $ g $, which is identified with the top quark $ g\equiv g_t \sim \mathcal{O}(1) $. The top-bottom mass hierarchy arises by soft breaking of a $ \mathbb{Z}_2 $ symmetry by a condensate of strongly interacting fermions. A mass splitting between vector-like masses of the confined techni-fermions controls this top-bottom mass hierarchy. This mechanism can be present in a variety of models based on vacuum misalignment. For concreteness, we demonstrate it in a composite two-Higgs scheme.

Sterile Neutrinos, Black Hole Vacuum and Holographic Principle

We construct an effective field theory (EFT) model that describes matter field interactions with Schwarzschild mini-black-holes (SBH's), treated as a scalar field, $B_0(x)$. Fermion interactions with SBH's require a random complex spurion field, $θ_{ij}$, which we interpret as the EFT description of "holographic information," which is correlated with the SBH as a composite system. We consider Hawking's virtual black hole vacuum (VBH) as a Higgs phase, $\langle B_0 \rangle =V$. Integrating sterile neutrino loops, the field $θ_{ij}$ is promoted to a dynamical field, necessarily developing a tachyonic instability and acquiring a VEV of order the Planck scale. For $N$ sterile neutrinos this breaks the vacuum to $SU(N)\times U(1)/SO(N)$ with $N$ degenerate Majorana masses, and $(1/2)N(N+1)$ Nambu-Goldstone neutrino-Majorons. The model suggests many scalars fields, corresponding to all fermion bilinears, may exist bound nonperturbatively by gravity.

Axion Induced Oscillating Electric Dipole Moment of the Electron

A cosmic axion, via the electromagnetic anomaly, induces an oscillating electric dipole for the electron of frequency $m_a$ and strength $\sim$(few)$\times 10^{-32}$ e-cm, two orders of magnitude above the nucleon, and within a few orders of magnitude of the present standard model constant limit. We give a detailed study of this phenomenon via the interaction of the cosmic axion, through the electromagnetic anomaly, with particular emphasis on the decoupling limit of the axion, $\partial_t a(t)\propto m_a \rightarrow 0$. The analysis is subtle, and we find the general form of the action involves a local contact interaction and a nonlocal contribution, analogous to the "transverse current" in QED, that enforces the decoupling limit. We carefully derive the effective action in the Pauli-Schroedinger non-relativistic formalism, and in Georgi's heavy quark formalism adapted to the "heavy electron" ($m_e>>m_a$). We compute the electric dipole radiation emitted by free electrons, magnets and currents, immersed in the cosmic axion field, and discuss experimental configurations that may yield a detectable signal.

Scale-Independent Inflation and Hierarchy Generation

We discuss models involving two scalar fields coupled to classical gravity that satisfy the general criteria: (i) the theory has no mass input parameters, (ii) classical scale symmetry is broken only through $-\frac{1}{12}ςϕ^2 R$ couplings where $ς$ departs from the special conformal value of $1$; (iii) the Planck mass is dynamically generated by the vacuum expectations values (VEVs) of the scalars (iv) there is a stage of viable inflation associated with slow roll in the two--scalar potential; (v) the final vacuum has a small to vanishing cosmological constant and an hierarchically small ratio of the VEVs and the ratio of the scalar masses to the Planck scale. This assumes the paradigm of classical scale symmetry as a custodial symmetry of large hierarchies.

Axion Induced Oscillating Electric Dipole Moments

The axion electromagnetic anomaly induces an oscillating electric dipole for {\em any} static magnetic dipole. Static electric dipoles do not produce oscillating magnetic moments. This is a low energy theorem which is a consequence of the space-time dependent cosmic background field of the axion in the limit that it is only locally time dependent $(\overrightarrowβ=0)$. The electron will acquire an oscillating electric dipole of frequency $m_a$ and strength $\sim 10^{-32}$ e-cm, three orders of magnitude above the nucleon, and within four orders of magnitude of the present standard model DC limit. This may suggest sensitive new experimental venues for the axion dark matter search.

An ultra-weak sector, the strong CP problem and the pseudo-Goldstone dilaton

In the context of a Coleman-Weinberg mechanism for the Higgs boson mass, we address the strong CP problem. We show that a DFSZ-like invisible axion model with a gauge-singlet complex scalar field S, whose couplings to the Standard Model are naturally ultra-weak, can solve the strong CP problem and simultaneously generate acceptable electroweak symmetry breaking. The ultra-weak couplings of the singlet S are associated with underlying approximate shift symmetries that act as custodial symmetries and maintain technical naturalness. The model also contains a very light pseudo-Goldstone dilaton that is consistent with cosmological Polonyi bounds, and the axion can be the dark matter of the universe. We further outline how a SUSY version of this model, which may be required in the context of Grand Unification, can avoid introducing a hierarchy problem.

Composite Vectorlike Fermions

We study a dynamical mechanism that generates a composite vectorlike fermion, formed by the binding of an $N$-tuplet of elementary chiral fermions to an $N$-tuplet of scalars. Deriving the properties of the composite fermion in the large $N$ limit, we show that its mass is much smaller than the compositeness scale when the binding coupling is near a critical value. We compute the contact interactions involving four composite fermions, and find that their coefficients scale as $1/N$. Physics beyond the Standard Model may include composite vectorlike fermions arising from this mechanism.

Is the Higgs Boson Associated with Coleman-Weinberg Dynamical Symmetry Breaking?

The Higgs mechanism may be a quantum phenomenon, i.e., a Coleman-Weinberg potential generated by the explicit breaking of scale symmetry in Feynman loops. We review the relationship of scale symmetry, trace anomalies, and emphasize the role of the renormalization group in determining Coleman- Weinberg potentials. We propose a simple phenomenological model with "maximal visibility" at the LHC containing a "dormant" Higgs doublet (no VEV, coupled to standard model gauge interactions $SU(2)\times U(1)$) with a mass of $\sim 380$ GeV. We discuss the LHC phenomenology and UV challenges of such a model. We also give a schematic model in which new heavy fermions, with masses $\sim 230$ GeV, can drive a Coleman-Weinberg potential at two-loops. The role of the "improved stress tensor" is emphasized, and we propose a non-gravitational term, analogous to the $θ$-term in QCD, which generates it from a scalar action.

preprint2014arXiv

Ultra-weak sector, Higgs boson mass, and the dilaton

The Higgs boson mass may arise from a portal coupling to a singlet field $σ$ which has a very large VEV $f \gg m_\text{Higgs}$. This requires a sector of "ultra-weak" couplings $ζ_i$, where $ζ_i \lesssim m_\text{Higgs}^2 / f^2$. Ultra-weak couplings are technically naturally small due to a custodial shift symmetry of $σ$ in the $ζ_i \rightarrow 0$ limit. The singlet field $σ$ has properties similar to a pseudo-dilaton. We engineer explicit breaking of scale invariance in the ultra-weak sector via a Coleman-Weinberg potential, which requires hierarchies amongst the ultra-weak couplings.

"Super"-Dilatation Symmetry of the Top-Higgs System

The top-Higgs system, consisting of top quark (LH doublet, RH singlet), and Higgs boson kinetic terms, with gauge fields set to zero, has an exact (modulo total divergences) symmetry where both fermion and Higgs fields are shifted and mixed in a supersymmetric fashion. The full Higgs-Yukawa interaction and Higgs-potential, including additional 1/Λ^2 N JL-like interactions, also has this symmetry to 0(1/Λ^4) up to null-operators. Thus the interaction lagrangian can be viewed as a power series in 1/Λ^2. The symmetry involves interplay of the Higgs quartic interaction with the Higgs-Yukawa interaction and implies the relationship, λ= \half g^2 between the top--Yukawa coupling, g, and Higgs quartic coupling, λ, at a high energy scale Λ= few TeV. We interpret this to be a new physics scale. The top quark is massless in the symmetric phase, satisfying the Nambu-Goldstone theorem. The fermionic shift part of the current is \propto (1-H^\dagger H/v^2), owing to the interplay of λand g, and vanishes in the broken phase. Hence the Nambu-Goldstone theorem is trivially evaded in the broken phase and the top quark becomes heavy (it is not a Goldstino). We have m_t=m_h,subject to radiative corrections that can in principle pull the Higgs into concordance with experiment.

The top-Higgs system, consisting of top quark (LH doublet, RH singlet) and Higgs boson kinetic terms, with gauge fields set to zero, has an exact (modulo total divergences) symmetry where both fermion and Higgs fields are shifted and mixed in a supersymmetric fashion. The full Higgs-Yukawa interaction and Higgs-potential, including additional \sim 1/Λ^2 NJL-like interactions, also has this symmetry to O(1/Λ^4), up to null-operators. Thus the interaction lagrangian can be viewed as a power series in 1/Λ^2. The symmetry involves interplay of the Higgs quartic interaction with the Higgs-Yukawa interaction and implies the relationship, λ= \half g^2 between the top--Yukawa coupling, g, and Higgs quartic coupling, λ, at a high energy scale Λ>= few TeV. Topological Interactions in Warped Extra Dimensions

Topological interactions will be generated in theories with compact extra dimensions where fermionic chiral zero modes have different localizations. This is the case in many warped extra dimension models where the right-handed top quark is typically localized away from the left-handed one. Using deconstruction techniques, we study the topological interactions in these models. These interactions appear as trilinear and quadrilinear gauge boson couplings in low energy effective theories with three or more sites, as well as in the continuum limit. We derive the form of these interactions for various cases, including examples of Abelian, non-Abelian and product gauge groups of phenomenological interest. The topological interactions provide a window into the more fundamental aspects of these theories and could result in unique signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, some of which we explore.

T-Parity Violation by Anomalies

Little Higgs theories often rely on an internal parity ("T-parity'') to suppress non-standard electroweak effects or to provide a dark matter candidate. We show that such a symmetry is generally broken by anomalies, as described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We study a simple SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3) Little Higgs scheme where we obtain a minimal form for the topological interactions of a single Higgs field. The results apply to more general models, including [SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3)]^4, SU(5)/SO(5), and SU(6)/Sp(6).

Strong Dynamics and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

The breaking of the electroweak symmetry, and origin of the associated ``weak scale,'' may be due to a new strong interaction. Theoretical developments over the past decade have led to viable models and mechanisms that are consistent with current experimental data. Many of these schemes feature a privileged role for the top quark, and third generation, and are natural in the context of theories of extra space dimensions at the weak scale. We review various models and their phenomenological implications which will be subject to definitive tests in future collider runs at the Tevatron, the LHC, and future linear electron-positron colliders, as well as sensitive studies of rare processes.

Electroweak symmetry breaking by extra dimensions

Electroweak symmetry breaking may be naturally induced by the observed quark and gauge fields in extra dimensions without a fundamental Higgs field. We show that a composite Higgs doublet can arise as a bound state of $(t, b)_L$ and a linear combination of the Kaluza-Klein states of $t_R$, due to QCD in extra dimensions. The top quark mass depends on the number of active $t_R$ Kaluza-Klein modes, and is consistent with the experimental value.

``Topcolor''; Invited talk presented at "Strongly Coupled Gauge Theories, 1996", Nagoya, Japan, Nov. 1996

We review a class of dynamical models in which top condensation occurs at the weak scale, giving rise to the large top quark mass and other phenomena. This typically requires a color embedding, $SU(3)_c \rightarrow SU(3)_1\times SU(3)_2$. These models imply many signatures addressable in near term experiments at colliders and in fixed target mode.

Topcolor Assisted Technicolor

A condensate, $\overline{t}t$, arising from $O(TeV)$ scale ``topcolor,'' in addition to technicolor (and ETC) may naturally explain the gauge hierarchy, the large top quark mass, and contains a rich system of testable consequences. A triplet of strongly coupled pseudo--Nambu--Goldstone bosons, ``top-pions,'' near the top mass scale is a generic prediction of the models. A new class of technicolor schemes and associated phenomenology is suggested in this approach.

Z -> b\bar{b} Versus Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking involving the Top Quark

In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking which sensitively involve the third generation, such as top quark condensation, the effects of the new dynamics can show up experimentally in Z->b\bar{b}. We compare the sensitivity of Z->b\bar{b} and top quark production at the Tevatron to models of the new physics. Z->b\bar{b} is a relatively more sensitive probe to new strongly coupled U(1) gauge bosons, while it is generally less sensitive a probe to new physics involving color octet gauge bosons as is top quark production itself. Nonetheless, to accomodate a significant excess in Z->b\bar{b} requires choosing model parameters that may be ruled out within run I(b) at the Tevatron.

B--Physics in Hadron Colliders

The possibility of exploring the systematics of the spectroscopy, strong dynamics, and the weak and rare decay modes of b--quark systems at hadron colliders such as Fermilab, LHC and SSC, is discussed. A copious yield of $10^{10}$ detected $B$--mesons is readily accessible in a dedicated Fermilab program, and implies a vast array of accessible decay modes, including second order weak processes and $CP$--violation, which will be unavailable elsewhere until the commissioning of LHC or SSC. Kinematic and flavor tagging, utilizing the ``daughter pions'' from resonances, is expected to play a major role in semileptonic weak decay studies and the search for $CP$--violation. Chiral Dynamics and Heavy Quark Symmetry in a Toy Field Theoretic Model

We study a solvable QCD--like toy theory, a generalization of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, which implements chiral symmetries of light quarks and heavy quark symmetry. The chiral symmetric and chiral broken phases can be dynamically tuned. This implies a parity doubled heavy--light meson system, corresponding to a $(0^-,1^-)$ multiplet and a $(0^+,1^+)$ heavy spin multiplet. Consequently the mass difference of the two multiplets is given by a Goldberger--Treiman relation and $g_A$ is found to be small. The Isgur--Wise function, $ξ(w)$, the decay constant, $f_B$, and other observables are studied.

Top Production: Sensitivity to New Physics

The production cross--section and distributions of the top quark are sensitive to new physics, e.g., the $t\overline{t}$ system can be a probe of new resonances or gauge bosons that are strongly coupled to the top quark, in analogy to Drell--Yan production. The existence of such new physics is expected in dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking schemes, and associated with the large mass of the top quark. The total top production cross--section can be more than doubled, and distributions significantly distorted with a chosen scale of new physics of $\sim 1 $ TeV in the vector color singlet or octet $s$--channel. New resonance physics is most readily discernible in the high--$p_T$ distributions of the single top quark and of the $W$ boson.
