Basal-plane anisotropy of field-induced multipolar order in tetragonal CeRh$_2$As$_2$

Unconventional superconductivity in Ce-based Kondo-lattice materials emerges almost exclusively in the vicinity of weak dipolar magnetic orders, while higher multipolar orders are only known to occur in a few Pr-based unconventional superconductors and possibly URu$_2$Si$_2$. The multiphase superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$ appears to be a notable exception from this trend. Showing clear signatures of magnetism, this tetragonal system is suspected to host a concomitant quadrupolar order, which could be causing the strong enhancement of the ordering temperature when a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the fourfold ($c$) axis of the lattice. In this work, we show that the field-temperature phase diagram of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ has a remarkable basal-plane anisotropy. This finding supports the scenario of coupled magnetic and multipolar ordering, which may have implications for the pairing mechanism of the superconductivity, and guides the development of the next iteration of theoretical models.

High density of states in the pseudogap phase of the cuprate superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$

The specific heat $C$ of the single-layer cuprate superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ was measured in an underdoped crystal with $T_{\rm c} = 72$ K at temperatures down to $2$ K in magnetic fields up to $35$ T, a field large enough to suppress superconductivity at that doping ($p \simeq 0.09$). In the normal state at $H = 35$ T, a residual linear term of magnitude $γ= 12 \pm 2$ mJ/K$^2$mol is observed in $C/T$ as $T \to 0$, a direct measure of the electronic density of states. This high value of $γ$ has two major implications. First, it is significantly larger than the value measured in overdoped cuprates outside the pseudogap phase ($p >p^\star$), such as La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6 + δ}$ at $p \simeq 0.3$, where $γ\simeq 7$ mJ/K$^2$mol. Given that the pseudogap causes a loss of density of states, and assuming that HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ has the same $γ$ value as other cuprates at $p \simeq 0.3$, this implies that $γ$ in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ must peak between $p \simeq 0.09$ and $p \simeq 0.3$, namely at (or near) the critical doping $p^\star$ where the pseudogap phase is expected to end ($p^\star\simeq 0.2$). Secondly, the high $γ$ value implies that the Fermi surface must consist of more than the single electron-like pocket detected by quantum oscillations in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4 + δ}$ at $p \simeq 0.09$, whose effective mass $m^\star= 2.7\times m_0$ yields only $γ= 4.0$ mJ/K$^2$mol. This missing mass imposes a revision of the current scenario for how pseudogap and charge order respectively transform and reconstruct the Fermi surface of cuprates.

Silicon Superconducting Quantum Interference Device

We have studied a Superconducting Quantum Interference SQUID device made from a single layer thin film of superconducting silicon. The superconducting layer is obtained by heavily doping a silicon wafer with boron atoms using the Gas Immersion Laser Doping (GILD) technique. The SQUID device is composed of two nano-bridges (Dayem bridges) in a loop and shows magnetic flux modulation at low temperature and low magnetic field. The overall behavior shows very good agreement with numerical simulations based on the Ginzburg-Landau equations.

S-wave superconductivity probed by measuring magnetic penetration depth and lower critical field of MgCNi$_{3}$ single crystals

The magnetic penetration depth $λ$ has been measured in MgCNi$_{3}$ single crystals using both a high precision Tunnel Diode Oscillator technique (TDO) and Hall probe magnetization (HPM). In striking contrast to previous measurements in powders, $δλ$(T) deduced from TDO measurements increases exponentially at low temperature, clearly showing that the superconducting gap is fully open over the whole Fermi surface. An absolute value at zero temperature $λ(0)=230 $nm is found from the lower critical field measured by HPM. We also discuss the observed difference of the superfluid density deduced from both techniques. A possible explanation could be due to a systematic decrease of the critical temperature at the sample surface.

AC Heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect measurements for pulsed magnetic fields

A new calorimeter for measurements of the AC heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect of small samples in pulsed magnetic fields is discussed for the exploration of thermal and thermodynamic properties at temperatures down to 2 K. We tested the method up to μ0H = 50 Tesla, but it could be extended to higher fields. For these measurements we used carefully calibrated bare chip Cernox\textregistered and RuO2 thermometers, and we present a comparison of their performance. The monotonic temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magneto resistance of RuO2 allow us to carry on precise thermometry with a precision as good as \pm 1mK at T = 2 K. To test the performance of our calorimeter, AC heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect for the spin-dimer compound Sr3Cr2O8 and the triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 are presented.
