Exploring Fresnel diffraction at a straight edge with a neural network

We describe a research project carried out with a group of undergraduate physics students and aimed at exploring the use of a neural network to study a classical problem in wave optics whose analytical solution is well known: the diffraction of light by the straight edge of an opaque semi-infinite screen. Through this exposure to machine learning, the students were able to appreciate the basic steps involved in a machine-learning process.

Ideal Four Wave Mixing Dynamics in a Nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger Equation Fibre System

Near-ideal four wave mixing dynamics are observed in a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation system using a new experimental technique associated with iterated sequential initial conditions in optical fiber. This novel approach mitigates against unwanted sideband generation and optical loss, extending the effective propagation distance by two orders of magnitude, allowing Kerr-driven coupling dynamics to be seen over 50 km of optical fiber using only one short fiber segment of 500 m. Our experiments reveal the full dynamical phase space topology in amplitude and phase, showing characteristic features of multiple Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence cycles, stationary wave existence, and the system separatrix boundary. Experiments are shown to be in excellent quantitative agreement with numerical solutions of the canonical differential equation system describing the wave evolution.

Artificial neural networks for nonlinear pulse shaping in optical fibers

We use a supervised machine-learning model based on a neural network to predict the temporal and spectral intensity profiles of the pulses that form upon nonlinear propagation in optical fibers with both normal and anomalous second-order dispersion. We also show that the model is able to retrieve the parameters of the nonlinear propagation from the pulses observed at the output of the fiber. Various initial pulse shapes as well as initially chirped pulses are investigated.

Temporal Fresnel diffraction induced by phase jumps in linear and nonlinear optical fibres

We analytically and numerically study the temporal intensity pattern emerging from the linear or nonlinear evolutions of a single or double phase jump in an optical fiber. The results are interpreted in terms of interferences of the well-known diffractive patterns of a straight edge, strip and slit and a complete analytical framework is provided in terms of Fresnel integrals for the case of purely dispersive evolution. When Kerr nonlinearity affects the propagation, various coherent nonlinear structures emerge according to the regime of dispersion.

Temporal optical besselon waves

We analyse the temporal properties of the optical pulse wave that is obtained by applying a set of spectral $π/2$ phase shifts to continuous-wave light that is phase-modulated by a temporal sinusoidal wave. We develop an analytical model to describe this new optical waveform that we name 'besselon'. We also discuss the reduction of sidelobes in the wave intensity profile by means of an additional spectral $π$ phase shift, and show that the resulting pulses can be efficiently time-interleaved. The various predicted properties of the besselon are confirmed by experiments demonstrating the generation of low-duty cycle, high-quality pulses at repetition rates up to 28 GHz.

Ultrashort pulse generation from binary temporal phase modulation

We propose and numerically validate an all-optical scheme to generate a train of optical pulses. Modulation of a continuous wave with a periodic binary temporal phase pattern followed by a spectral phase shaping enables us to obtain ultrashort pulse trains. An ideal step phase profile as well as a profile arisen from a bandwidth-limited device are investigated. Analytical guidelines describing pulse trains formation and their characteristics are provided.

Arago spot formation in the time domain

Using the space-time duality we theoretically and experimentally revisit the Arago spot formation in the time domain and explore the temporal emergence of a bright spot in the time shadow of an initial waveform. We describe the linear regime of propagation using Fresnel's integrals and show that in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity the Arago spot formation is affected depending on the sign of the dispersion. We finally confirm experimentally the Arago spot formation in the time domain using a telecommunication optical fiber platform.

Linear and nonlinear fiber propagation of partially coherent fields exhibiting temporal correlations

Using ultrafast photonic first-order differentiator applied on a partially coherent field, we report the generation of two correlated temporal waveforms and study their correlation properties upon linear and nonlinear propagation along the two orthogonal polarization axis of a dispersive optical fiber. Temporal correlations are maintained in linear propagation whereas Kerr nonlinearity generates anti-correlated temporal intensity patterns for both partially and uncorrelated fields. Experiments are in close agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Optical pulse doublet resulting from the nonlinear splitting of a super-Gaussian pulse

We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a temporal pulse doublet from the propagation of an initial super-Gaussian waveform in a nonlinear focusing medium. The picosecond structures are characterized both in amplitude and phase and their close-to-Gaussian Fourier-transform limited shape is found in excellent agreement with numerical simulations. This nonlinear fiber-based single-stage reshaping scheme is energy efficient, can sustain GHz repetition rates and temporal compression factors around 10 are demonstrated.

40-GHz pulse source based on XPM-induced focusing in normally dispersive optical fibers

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the design of a high-repetition rate source delivering well-separated picosecond pulses thanks to the nonlinear compression of a dual-frequency beat signal within a cavity-less normally dispersive fiber-based setup. This system is well described by a set of two coupled NLS equations for which the usual normally dispersive defocusing regime is turned in a focusing temporal lens through a degenerated cross-phase modulation effect. More precisely, the temporal compression of the initial beating is performed by the combined effects of normal GVD and XPM-induced nonlinear phase shift yield by an intense beat-signal on its weak out-of-phase replica copropagating with orthogonal polarizations. This adiabatic reshaping process allows us to generate a 40GHz well-separated 3.3ps pulse train at 1550nm in a 5km long normally dispersive fiber.

Shallow water rogue wavetrains in nonlinear optical fibers

In addition to deep-water rogue waves which develop from the modulation instability of an optical CW, wave propagation in optical fibers may also produce shallow water rogue waves. These extreme wave events are generated in the modulationally stable normal dispersion regime. A suitable phase or frequency modulation of a CW laser leads to chirp-free and flat-top pulses or flaticons which exhibit a stable self-similar evolution. Upon collision, flaticons at different carrier frequencies, which may also occur in wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems, merge into a single, high-intensity, temporally and spatially localized rogue pulse.
