A modular functor from state sums for finite tensor categories and their bimodules

We construct a modular functor which takes its values in the monoidal bicategory of finite categories, left exact functors and natural transformations. The modular functor is defined on bordisms that are 2-framed. Accordingly we do not need to require that the finite categories appearing in our construction are semisimple, nor that the finite tensor categories that are assigned to two-dimensional strata are endowed with a pivotal structure. Our prescription can be understood as a state-sum construction. The state-sum variables are assigned to one-dimensional strata and take values in bimodule categories over finite tensor categories, whereby we also account for the presence of boundaries and defects. Our construction allows us to explicitly compute functors associated to surfaces and representations of mapping class groups acting on them.

The Hochschild Complex of a Finite Tensor Category

Modular functors, i.e. consistent systems of projective representations of mapping class groups of surfaces, have been constructed for non-semisimple modular categories already decades ago. Concepts from homological algebra have not been used in this construction although it is an obvious question how they should enter in the non-semisimple case. In the present paper, we elucidate the interplay between the structures from topological field theory and from homological algebra by constructing a homotopy coherent projective action of the mapping class group $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of the torus on the Hochschild complex of a modular category. This is a further step towards understanding the Hochschild complex of a modular category as a differential graded conformal block for the torus. Moreover, we describe a differential graded version of the Verlinde algebra.

Matrix product operator symmetries and intertwiners in string-nets with domain walls

We provide a description of virtual non-local matrix product operator (MPO) symmetries in projected entangled pair state (PEPS) representations of string-net models. Given such a PEPS representation, we show that the consistency conditions of its MPO symmetries amount to a set of six coupled equations that can be identified with the pentagon equations of a bimodule category. This allows us to classify all equivalent PEPS representations and build MPO intertwiners between them, synthesising and generalising the wide variety of tensor network representations of topological phases. Furthermore, we use this generalisation to build explicit PEPS realisations of domain walls between different topological phases as constructed by Kitaev and Kong [Commun. Math. Phys. 313 (2012) 351-373]. While the prevailing abstract categorical approach is sufficient to describe the structure of topological phases, explicit tensor network representations are required to simulate these systems on a computer, such as needed for calculating thresholds of quantum error-correcting codes based on string-nets with boundaries. Finally, we show that all these string-net PEPS representations can be understood as specific instances of Turaev-Viro state-sum models of topological field theory on three-manifolds with a physical boundary, thereby putting these tensor network constructions on a mathematically rigorous footing.

Internal natural transformations and Frobenius algebras in the Drinfeld center

For M and N finite module categories over a finite tensor category C, the category Rex_C(M,N) of right exact module functors is a finite module category over the Drinfeld center Z(C). We study the internal Homs of this module category, which we call internal natural transformations. With the help of certain integration functors that map C-C-bimodule functors to objects of Z(C), we express them as ends over internal Homs and define horizontal and vertical compositions. We show that if M and N are exact C-modules and C is pivotal, then the Z(C)-module Rex_C(M,N) is exact. We compute its relative Serre functor and show that if M and N are even pivotal module categories, then Rex_C(M,N) is pivotal as well. Its internal Ends are then a rich source for Frobenius algebras in Z(C).

Module Eilenberg-Watts calculus

The categorical formulation of the Eilenberg-Watts calculus relates, for any pair of finite categories M and N, the finite categories Fun^{le}(N,M) and Fun^{re}(N,M) of linear left or right exact functors and the Deligne product \bar N \boxtimes M by adjoint equivalences. We establish a variant of this calculus for the case that the finite categories M and N are module categories over a finite tensor category. This provides in particular canonical and explicitly computable equivalences between categories of left or right exact module functors (or, more generally, balanced functors) and certain twisted centers of bimodule categories.

A trace for bimodule categories

We study a 2-functor that assigns to a bimodule category over a finite k-linear tensor category a k-linear abelian category. This 2-functor can be regarded as a category-valued trace for 1-morphisms in the tricategory of finite tensor categories. It is defined by a universal property that is a categorification of Hochschild homology of bimodules over an algebra. We present several equivalent realizations of this 2-functor and show that it has a coherent cyclic invariance. Our results have applications to categories associated to circles in three-dimensional topological field theories with defects. This is made explicit for the subclass of Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories.

Coends in conformal field theory

The idea of "summing over all intermediate states" that is central for implementing locality in quantum systems can be realized by coend constructions. In the concrete case of systems of conformal blocks for a certain class of conformal vertex algebras, one deals with coends in functor categories. Working with these coends involves quite a few subtleties which, even though they have in principle already been understood twenty years ago, have not been sufficiently appreciated by the conformal field theory community.

Low-dimensional topology, low-dimensional field theory and representation theory

Structures in low-dimensional topology and low-dimensional geometry -- often combined with ideas from (quantum) field theory -- can explain and inspire concepts in algebra and in representation theory and their categorified versions. We present a personal view on some of these instances which have appeared within the Research Priority Programme SPP 1388 ``Representation theory''.

On the Brauer groups of symmetries of abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten theories

Symmetries of three-dimensional topological field theories are naturally defined in terms of invertible topological surface defects. Symmetry groups are thus Brauer-Picard groups. We present a gauge theoretic realization of all symmetries of abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten theories. The symmetry group for a Dijkgraaf-Witten theory with gauge group a finite abelian group $A$, and with vanishing 3-cocycle, is generated by group automorphisms of $A$, by automorphisms of the trivial Chern-Simons 2-gerbe on the stack of $A$-bundles, and by partial e-m dualities. We show that transmission functors naturally extracted from extended topological field theories with surface defects give a physical realization of the bijection between invertible bimodule categories of a fusion category and braided auto-equivalences of its Drinfeld center. The latter provides the labels for bulk Wilson lines; it follows that a symmetry is completely characterized by its action on bulk Wilson lines.

Symmetries and defects in three-dimensional topological field theory

Boundary conditions and defects of any codimension are natural parts of any quantum field theory. Surface defects in three-dimensional topological field theories of Turaev-Reshetikhin type have applications to two-dimensional conformal field theories, in solid state physics and in quantum computing. We explain an obstruction to the existence of surface defects that takes values in a Witt group. We then turn to surface defects in Dijkgraaf-Witten theories and their construction in terms of relative bundles; this allows one to exhibit Brauer-Picard groups as symmetry groups of three-dimensional topological field theories.

A geometric approach to boundaries and surface defects in Dijkgraaf-Witten theories

Dijkgraaf-Witten theories are extended three-dimensional topological field theories of Turaev-Viro type. They can be constructed geometrically from categories of bundles via linearization. Boundaries and surface defects or interfaces in quantum field theories are of interest in various applications and provide structural insight. We perform a geometric study of boundary conditions and surface defects in Dijkgraaf-Witten theories. A crucial tool is the linearization of categories of relative bundles. We present the categories of generalized Wilson lines produced by such a linearization procedure. We establish that they agree with the Wilson line categories that are predicted by the general formalism for boundary conditions and surface defects in three-dimensional topological field theories that has been developed in arXive:1203.4568.

A Serre-Swan theorem for gerbe modules on étale Lie groupoids

Given a bundle gerbe on a compact smooth manifold or, more generally, on a compact étale Lie groupoid $M$, we show that the corresponding category of gerbe modules, if it is non-trivial, is equivalent to the category of finitely generated projective modules over an Azumaya algebra on $M$. This result can be seen as an equivariant Serre-Swan theorem for twisted vector bundles.

Partially dualized Hopf algebras have equivalent Yetter-Drinfel'd modules

Given a Hopf algebra $H$ and a projection $H\to A$ to a Hopf subalgebra, we construct a Hopf algebra $r(H)$, called the partial dualization of $H$, with a projection to the Hopf algebra dual to $A$. This construction provides powerful techniques in the general setting of braided monoidal categories. The construction comprises in particular the reflections of generalized quantum groups, arxiv:1111.4673 . We prove a braided equivalence between the Yetter-Drinfel'd modules over a Hopf algebra and its partial dualization.

Bicategories for boundary conditions and for surface defects in 3-d TFT

We analyze topological boundary conditions and topological surface defects in three-dimensional topological field theories of Reshetikhin-Turaev type based on arbitrary modular tensor categories. Boundary conditions are described by central functors that lift to trivializations in the Witt group of modular tensor categories. The bicategory of boundary conditions can be described through the bicategory of module categories over any such trivialization. A similar description is obtained for topological surface defects. Using string diagrams for bicategories we also establish a precise relation between special symmetric Frobenius algebras and Wilson lines involving special defects. We compare our results with previous work of Kapustin-Saulina and of Kitaev-Kong on boundary conditions and surface defects in abelian Chern-Simons theories and in Turaev-Viro type TFTs, respectively.

From non-semisimple Hopf algebras to correlation functions for logarithmic CFT

We use factorizable finite tensor categories, and specifically the representation categories of factorizable ribbon Hopf algebras H, as a laboratory for exploring bulk correlation functions in local logarithmic conformal field theories. For any ribbon Hopf algebra automorphism omega of H we present a candidate for the space of bulk fields and endow it with a natural structure of a commutative symmetric Frobenius algebra. We derive an expression for the corresponding bulk partition functions as bilinear combinations of irreducible characters; as a crucial ingredient this involves the Cartan matrix of the category. We also show how for any candidate bulk state space of the type we consider, correlation functions of bulk fields for closed oriented world sheets of any genus can be constructed that are invariant under the natural action of the relevant mapping class group.

Partition functions, mapping class groups and Drinfeld doubles

Higher genus partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories have to be invariants under linear actions of mapping class groups. We illustrate recent results [4,6] on the construction of such invariants by concrete expressions obtained for the case of Drinfeld doubles of finite groups. The results for doubles are independent of the characteristic of the underlying field, and the general results do not require any assumptions of semisimplicity.

Higher genus mapping class group invariants from factorizable Hopf algebras

Lyubashenko's construction associates representations of mapping class groups Map_{g,n} of Riemann surfaces of any genus g with any number n of holes to a factorizable ribbon category. We consider this construction as applied to the category of bimodules over a finite-dimensional factorizable ribbon Hopf algebra H. For any such Hopf algebra we find an invariant of Map_{g,n} for all values of g and n. More generally, we obtain such invariants for any pair (H,omega), where omega is a ribbon automorphism of H. Our results are motivated by the quest to understand correlation functions of bulk fields in two-dimensional conformal field theories with chiral algebras that are not necessarily semisimple, so-called logarithmic conformal field theories.

Modular invariant Frobenius algebras from ribbon Hopf algebra automorphisms

For any finite-dimensional factorizable ribbon Hopf algebra H and any ribbon automorphism omega of H, we establish the existence of the following structure: an H-bimodule F_omega and a bimodule morphism Z_omega from Lyubashenko's Hopf algebra object K for the bimodule category to F_omega. This morphism is invariant under the natural action of the mapping class group of the one-punctured torus on the space of bimodule morphisms from K to F_omega. We further show that the bimodule F_omega can be endowed with a natural structure of a commutative symmetric Frobenius algebra in the monoidal category of H-bimodules, and that it is a special Frobenius algebra iff H is semisimple. The bimodules K and F_omega can both be characterized as coends of suitable bifunctors. The morphism Z_omega is obtained by applying a monodromy operation to the coproduct of F_omega; a similar construction for the product of F_omega exists as well. Our results are motivated by the quest to understand the bulk state space and the bulk partition function in two-dimensional conformal field theories with chiral algebras that are not necessarily semisimple.

Strictification of weakly equivariant Hopf algebras

A weakly equivariant Hopf algebra is a Hopf algebra A with an action of a finite group G up to inner automorphisms. We show that each weakly equivariant Hopf algebra can be replaced by a Morita equivalent algebra B with a strict action of G and with a coalgebra structure that leads to a tensor equivalent representation category. However, the coproduct of this strictification cannot, in general, be chosen to be unital, so that a strictification of the G-action can only be found on a weak Hopf algebra B.

Equivariance In Higher Geometry

We study (pre-)sheaves in bicategories on geometric categories: smooth manifolds, manifolds with a Lie group action and Lie groupoids. We present three main results: we describe equivariant descent, we generalize the plus construction to our setting and show that the plus construction yields a 2-stackification for 2-prestacks. Finally we show that, for a 2-stack, the pullback functor along a Morita-equivalence of Lie groupoids is an equivalence of bicategories. Our results have direct applications to gerbes and 2-vector bundles. For instance, they allow to construct equivariant gerbes from local data and can be used to simplify the description of the local data. We illustrate the usefulness of our results in a systematic discussion of holonomies for unoriented surfaces.

Equivariant Modular Categories via Dijkgraaf-Witten Theory

Based on a weak action of a finite group J on a finite group G, we present a geometric construction of J-equivariant Dijkgraaf-Witten theory as an extended topological field theory. The construction yields an explicitly accessible class of equivariant modular tensor categories. For the action of a group J on a group G, the category is described as the representation category of a J-ribbon algebra that generalizes the Drinfel'd double of the finite group G.

Hopf algebras and finite tensor categories in conformal field theory

In conformal field theory the understanding of correlation functions can be divided into two distinct conceptual levels: The analytic properties of the correlators endow the representation categories of the underlying chiral symmetry algebras with additional structure, which in suitable cases is the one of a finite tensor category. The problem of specifying the correlators can then be encoded in algebraic structure internal to those categories. After reviewing results for conformal field theories for which these representation categories are semisimple, we explain what is known about representation categories of chiral symmetry algebras that are not semisimple. We focus on generalizations of the Verlinde formula, for which certain finite-dimensional complex Hopf algebras are used as a tool, and on the structural importance of the presence of a Hopf algebra internal to finite tensor categories.

A Geometric Construction for Permutation Equivariant Categories from Modular Functors

Let G be a finite group. Given a finite G-set X and a modular tensor category C, we construct a weak G-equivariant fusion category, called the permutation equivariant tensor category. The construction is geometric and uses the formalism of modular functors. As an application, we concretely work out a complete set of structure morphisms for Z/2-permutation equivariant categories, finishing thereby a program we initiated in an earlier paper arXiv:0812.0986 [math.CT].

Hopf algebras and Frobenius algebras in finite tensor categories

We discuss algebraic and representation theoretic structures in braided tensor categories C which obey certain finiteness conditions. Much interesting structure of such a category is encoded in a Hopf algebra H in C. In particular, the Hopf algebra H gives rise to representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) on various morphism spaces. We also explain how every symmetric special Frobenius algebra in a semisimple modular category provides additional structure related to these representations.

Module categories for permutation modular invariants

We show that a braided monoidal category C can be endowed with the structure of a right (and left) module category over C \times C. In fact, there is a family of such module category structures, and they are mutually isomorphic if and only if C allows for a twist. For the case that C is premodular we compute the internal End of the tensor unit of C, and we show that it is an Azumaya algebra if C is modular. As an application to two-dimensional rational conformal field theory, we show that the module categories describe the permutation modular invariant for models based on the product of two identical chiral algebras. It follows in particular that all permutation modular invariants are physical.

The classifying algebra for defects

We demonstrate that topological defects in a rational conformal field theory can be described by a classifying algebra for defects - a finite-dimensional semisimple unital commutative associative algebra whose irreducible representations give the defect transmission coefficients. We show in particular that the structure constants of the classifying algebra are traces of operators on spaces of conformal blocks and that the defect transmission coefficients determine the defect partition functions.

Unoriented WZW Models and Holonomy of Bundle Gerbes

The Wess-Zumino term in two-dimensional conformal field theory is best understood as a surface holonomy of a bundle gerbe. We define additional structure for a bundle gerbe that allows to extend the notion of surface holonomy to unoriented surfaces. This provides a candidate for the Wess-Zumino term for WZW models on unoriented surfaces. Our ansatz reproduces some results known from the algebraic approach to WZW models.

TFT construction of RCFT correlators IV: Structure constants and correlation functions

We compute the fundamental correlation functions in two-dimensional rational conformal field theory, from which all other correlators can be obtained by sewing: the correlators of three bulk fields on the sphere, one bulk and one boundary field on the disk, three boundary fields on the disk, and one bulk field on the cross cap. We also consider conformal defects and calculate the correlators of three defect fields on the sphere and of one defect field on the cross cap. Each of these correlators is presented as the product of a structure constant and the appropriate conformal two- or three-point block. The structure constants are expressed as invariants of ribbon graphs in three-manifolds.

TFT construction of RCFT correlators III: Simple currents

We use simple currents to construct symmetric special Frobenius algebras in modular tensor categories. We classify such simple current type algebras with the help of abelian group cohomology. We show that they lead to the modular invariant torus partition functions that have been studied by Kreuzer and Schellekens. We also classify boundary conditions in the associated conformal field theories and show that the boundary states are given by the formula proposed in hep-th/0007174. Finally, we investigate conformal defects in these theories.

Algebras in tensor categories and coset conformal field theories

The coset construction is the most important tool to construct rational conformal field theories with known chiral data. For some cosets at small level, so-called maverick cosets, the familiar analysis using selection and identification rules breaks down. Intriguingly, this phenomenon is linked to the existence of exceptional modular invariants. Recent progress in CFT, based on studying algebras in tensor categories, allows for a universal construction of the chiral data of coset theories which in particular also applies to maverick cosets.

TFT construction of RCFT correlators II: Unoriented world sheets

A full rational CFT, consistent on all orientable world sheets, can be constructed from the underlying chiral CFT, i.e. a vertex algebra, its representation category C, and the system of chiral blocks, once we select a symmetric special Frobenius algebra A in the category C [I]. Here we show that the construction of [I] can be extended to unoriented world sheets by specifying one additional datum: a reversion on A - an isomorphism from the opposed algebra of A to A that squares to the twist. A given full CFT on oriented surfaces can admit inequivalent reversions, which give rise to different amplitudes on unoriented surfaces, in particular to different Klein bottle amplitudes. We study the classification of reversions, work out the construction of the annulus, Moebius strip and Klein bottle partition functions, and discuss properties of defect lines on non-orientable world sheets. As an illustration, the Ising model is treated in detail.

ON THE EXTENDED POINCARE POLYNOMIAL

We show that the numbers of generations and anti-generations of a (2,2) string compactification with diagonal internal theory can be expressed in terms of certain specifications of the elliptic genus of the untwisted internal theory which can be computed from the Poincare polynomial. To establish this result we show that there are no cancellations of positive and negative contributions to the Euler characteristic within a fixed twisted sector. For our considerations we recast the orbifolding procedure into an algebraic language using simple currents. Turning the argument around, this allows us to define the `extended Poincare polynomial' P(t,x), which encodes information on the orbits of the spinor current under fusion, for non-diagonal N=2 superconformal field theories. As an application, we derive an explicit formula for P(t,x) for general Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds.

Non-Hermitian Symmetric N=2 Coset Models, Poincare Polynomials, and String Compactification

The field identification problem, including fixed point resolution, is solved for the non-hermitian symmetric $N=2$ superconformal coset theories. Thereby these models are finally identified as well-defined modular invariant CFTs. As an application, the theories are used as subtheories in tensor products with $c=9$, which in turn are taken as the inner sector of heterotic superstring compactifications. All string theories of this type are classified, and the chiral ring as well as the number of massless generations and anti-generations are computed with the help of the extended Poincare polynomial. Several equivalences between a priori different non-hermitian cosets show up; in particular there is a level-rank duality for an infinite series based on $C$ type Lie algebras. Further, some general results for generic $N=2$ cosets are proven: a simple formula for the number of identification currents is found, and it is shown that the set of Ramond ground states of any $N=2$ coset model is invariant under charge conjugation.
