Flux Compactifications, dS Vacua and the Swampland

One of the main goals of the field of string phenomenology is to describe the properties of our spacetime in low-energy effective models related to and consistent with string theory. It is known that our universe undergoes accelerated expansion, which can be described in Einstein's theory of general relativity as a positive cosmological constant. Within string theory descriptions, this is realized by a scalar field with a positive value of its potential. Oftentimes, this is modeled by having the scalar at a stable, positive minimum. One then obtains a de Sitter spacetime. Constructions of de Sitter spaces from string theory are not straightforward and face many criticisms. In this thesis, we address several aspects related to this topic. We investigate the description of general branes in supergravity and in particular describe the uplifting anti-D3-brane of the KKLT model, including all world-volume fields. Additionally, we translate the type IIB based KKLT model into type IIA and introduce a mechanism that allows for the rapid construction of many de Sitter solutions. Related to this, we investigate models based on twisted 7-tori from M-theory and their relation to type II supergravity. These setups can also yield de Sitter solutions using the same mass production mechanism. One of the more recent and serious claims against the construction of de Sitter spaces in string theory, the de Sitter swampland conjecture, is also addressed here. We highlight the difficulty of obtaining a stable, positive vacuum energy in classical type IIA flux compactifications and their reliance on O-plane sources. Then, we turn our attention to the conjecture itself. Contrary to the initial claim, we find many unstable de Sitter points in numerical searches and go on to present our own refined conjecture that differs in several key aspects from the refined version of the original conjecture.

de Sitter Minima from M theory and String theory

We study M-theory compactification on ${\mathbb{T}^7/ \mathbb{Z}_2^3}$ in the presence of a seven-flux, metric fluxes and KK monopoles. The effective four-dimensional supergravity has seven chiral multiplets whose couplings are specified by the $G_2$-structure of the internal manifold. We supplement the corresponding superpotential by a KKLT type non-perturbative exponential contribution for all, or for some of the seven moduli, and find a discrete set of supersymmetric Minkowski minima. We also study type IIA and type IIB string theory compactified on ${\mathbb{T}^6/ \mathbb{Z}_2^2}$. In type IIA, we use a six-flux, geometric fluxes and non-perturbative exponents. In type IIB theory, we use F and H fluxes, and non-geometric Q and P fluxes, corresponding to consistently gauged supergravity with certain embedding tensor components, \emph{without non-perturbative exponents}. Also in these situations, we produce discrete Minkowski minima. Finally, to construct dS vacua starting from these Minkowski progenitors, we follow the procedure of mass production of dS vacua.

Mass Production of IIA and IIB dS Vacua

We describe several applications of the recently proposed mass production procedure, where multiple moduli are stabilized in a dS vacuum, in supergravity models inspired by string theory. The construction involves a small downshift of an initial supersymmetric Minkowski minimum to a supersymmetric AdS minimum, and a consequent small uplift to a dS minimum. Our type IIA examples include dS stabilization in a 7-moduli model with $[SL(2, \mathbb{R})]^7$ tree level symmetry, and its simplified version, a 3-moduli STU model. In these models, we use uplifting anti-D6 branes. In type IIB models, we present 2- and 3-moduli examples of stable dS vacua in CY three-folds, with an uplifting anti-D3 brane. These include K3 fibration models, a CICY model and a multi-hole Swiss cheese model. We also address the issue whether this procedure is limited to a very small parameter range or if large deviations from the progenitor Minkowski vacuum are possible.

Non-supersymmetric branes

We discuss how to incorporate non-supersymmetric branes in compactifications of type II string theories. We particularly focus on flux compactifications on $SU(3)\times SU(3)$ structure manifolds to four dimensions, so that a linear $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by spacetime filling Dp-branes. Anti-Dp-branes are a very special subset of such branes but our analysis is generic. We show that the backreaction of non-supersymmetric branes can be incorporated into the standard 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity by including a nilpotent chiral multiplet. Supersymmetry in such setups is always spontaneously broken and non-linearly realized. In particular this means that, contrary to what was previously thought, brane supersymmetry breaking cannot be simply described by a D-term in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity theories.
