Complementarity between one- and two-body visibilities

We study one- and two-body visibility measures under an optimization of common, i.e. global evolutions of a two-body system, and identify two different visibilities of two-body correlators, both behaving complementary to the usual onebody interference visibility. We show that only one of them satisfies the common inequality associated with a complementary relation, while the other one entails a contrary relation. This, however, can be understood in terms of entanglement between the constituents.

Exploring complex graphs using three-dimensional quantum walks of correlated photons

Graph representations are a powerful concept for solving complex problems across natural science, as patterns of connectivity can give rise to a multitude of emergent phenomena. Graph-based approaches have proven particularly fruitful in quantum communication and quantum search algorithms in highly branched quantum networks. Here we introduce a new paradigm for the direct experimental realization of excitation dynamics associated with three-dimensional networks by exploiting the hybrid action of spatial and polarization degrees of freedom of photon pairs in complex waveguide circuits with tailored birefringence. This novel testbed for the experimental exploration of multi-particle quantum walks on complex, highly connected graphs paves the way towards exploiting the applicative potential of fermionic dynamics in integrated quantum photonics.

Simulation of wave-particle duality in multi-path interferometers on a quantum computer

We present an architecture to investigate wave-particle duality in $N$-path interferometers on a universal quantum computer involving as low as $2\log N$ qubits and develop a measurement scheme which allows the efficient extraction of quantifiers of interference visibility and which-path information. We implement our algorithms for interferometers with up to $N=16$ paths in proof-of-principle experiments on a noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) device using down to $\mathcal{O}(\log N)$ gates and despite increasing noise consistently observe a complementary behavior between interference visibility and which-path information. Our results are in accordance with our current understanding of wave-particle duality and allow its investigation for interferometers with an exponentially growing number of paths on future quantum devices beyond the NISQ era.

Hybrid waveguide-bulk multi-path interferometer with switchable amplitude and phase

We design and realise a hybrid interferometer consisting of three paths based on integrated as well as on bulk optical components. This hybrid construction offers a good compromise between stability and footprint on one side and means of intervention on the other. As experimentally verified by the absence of higher-order interferences, amplitude and phase can be manipulated in all paths independently. In conjunction with single photons, the setup can, therefore, be applied for fundamental investigations on quantum mechanics.
