Gauge-independent $\overline{MS}$ renormalization in the 2HDM

We present a consistent renormalization scheme for the CP-conserving Two-Higgs-Doublet Model based on $\overline{MS}$ renormalization of the mixing angles and the soft-$Z_2$-symmetry-breaking scale $M_{sb}$ in the Higgs sector. This scheme requires to treat tadpoles fully consistently in all steps of the calculation in order to provide gauge-independent $S$-matrix elements. We show how bare physical parameters have to be defined and verify the gauge independence of physical quantities by explicit calculations in a general $R_ξ$-gauge. The procedure is straightforward and applicable to other models with extended Higgs sectors. In contrast to the proposed scheme, the $\overline{MS}$ renormalization of the mixing angles combined with popular on-shell renormalization schemes gives rise to gauge-dependent results already at the one-loop level. We present explicit results for electroweak NLO corrections to selected processes in the appropriately renormalized Two-Higgs-Doublet Model and in particular discuss their scale dependence.

Massive Tadpoles: Techniques and Applications

A brief discussion of massive tadpole diagrams and their phenomenological consequences is presented. This includes predictions of the $ρ$ parameter and, as a consequence, the mass of the $W$ boson, implications on the charm and bottom quark masses from the moments, i.e. the derivatives of the current correlators, and the Higgs boson decay rate. A fairly consistent picture emerges, with $m_c(3 {GeV})=0.986\pm0.013$ GeV and $m_b(m_b)=3.610\pm0.016$ GeV. Furthermore, fairly stringent predictions for the Higgs decay rate into photons and gluons are obtained, which will be interesting in increasingly precise experiments.

Higher order QCD results for the fermionic contributions of the Higgs-boson decay into two photons and the decoupling function for the MSbar renormalized fine-structure constant

We compute the decoupling function of the MSbar renormalized fine-structure constant up to four-loop order in perturbative QCD. The results are used in order to determine the related top-quark contributions to the Higgs-boson decay into two photons in the heavy top-quark mass limit to order alpha_s^4.

Leptonic contributions to the effective electromagnetic coupling at four-loop order in QED

The running of the effective electromagnetic coupling is for many electroweak observables the dominant correction. It plays an important role for deriving constraints on the Standard Model in the context of electroweak precision measurements. We compute the four-loop QED corrections to the running of the effective electromagnetic coupling and perform a numerical evaluation of the different gauge invariant subsets.

Soft nuclear equation-of-state from heavy-ion data and implications for compact stars

Measurements of kaon production at subthreshold energies in heavy-ion collisions point to a soft nuclear equation-of-state for densities up to 2-3 times nuclear matter saturation density. We apply these results to study the implications on compact star properties, especially in the context of the recent measurement of the two solar mass pulsar PSR J1614-2230. The implications are two-fold: Firstly, the heavy-ion results constrain nuclear matter at densities relevant to light neutron stars. Hence, a radius measurement could provide information about the density dependence of the symmetry energy which is a crucial quantity in nuclear physics. Secondly, the information on the nucleon potential obtained from the analysis of the heavy-ion data can be combined with restrictions from causality on the nuclear equation-of-state. From this we can derive a limit for the highest allowed compact star mass of three solar masses.

Complete Electroweak Corrections to Higgs production in a Standard Model with four generations at the LHC

Complete electroweak two-loop corrections to the process $gg \to H$ are presented and discussed in a Standard Model with a fourth generation of heavy fermions. The latter is studied at the LHC to put exclusion limits on a fourth generation of heavy fermions. Therefore also a precise knowledge of the electroweak(EW) next-to-leading-order(NLO) corrections is important. The corrections due to the fourth generation are positive and large for a light Higgs boson, positive but relatively small around the $\bar{t}-t$ threshold and start to become negative for a Higgs boson mass around $M_H = 450 GeV$. Increasing further the value of the Higgs boson mass, the EW NLO effects tend to become huge and negative, ${\cal O}(-100%)$, around the heavy-fermion threshold, assumed at $1.2 TeV$, so that $gg$-fusion becomes non-perturbative. Above that threshold they start to grow again and become positive around $M_H= 1.75 TeV$. The behaviour at even larger values of $M_H$ shows a positive enhancement, ${\cal O}(+100%)$ at $M_H= 3 TeV$.

Matching factors for Delta S=1 four-quark operators in RI/SMOM schemes

The non-perturbative renormalization of four-quark operators plays a significant role in lattice studies of flavor physics. For this purpose, we define regularization-independent symmetric momentum-subtraction (RI/SMOM) schemes for Delta S=1 flavor-changing four-quark operators and provide one-loop matching factors to the MS-bar scheme in naive dimensional regularization. The mixing of two-quark operators is discussed in terms of two different classes of schemes. We provide a compact expression for the finite one-loop amplitudes which allows for a straightforward definition of further RI/SMOM schemes.

Two-loop matching factors for light quark masses and three-loop mass anomalous dimensions in the RI/SMOM schemes

Light quark masses can be determined through lattice simulations in regularization invariant momentum-subtraction(RI/MOM) schemes. Subsequently, matching factors, computed in continuum perturbation theory, are used in order to convert these quark masses from a RI/MOM scheme to the MS-bar scheme. We calculate the two-loop corrections in quantum chromodynamics(QCD) to these matching factors as well as the three-loop mass anomalous dimensions for the RI/SMOM and RI/SMOM_gamma_mu schemes. These two schemes are characterized by a symmetric subtraction point. Providing the conversion factors in the two different schemes allows for a better understanding of the systematic uncertainties. The two-loop expansion coefficients of the matching factors for both schemes turn out to be small compared to the traditional RI/MOM schemes. For nf=3 quark flavors they are about 0.6-0.7% and 2%, respectively, of the leading order result at scales of about 2 GeV. Therefore, they will allow for a significant reduction of the systematic uncertainty of light quark mass determinations obtained through this approach. The determination of these matching factors requires the computation of amputated Green's functions with the insertions of quark bilinear operators. As a by-product of our calculation we also provide the corresponding results for the tensor operator.

Two-Loop Virtual Corrections to Drell-Yan Production at order alpha_s alpha^3

The Drell-Yan mechanism for the production of lepton pairs is one of the most basic processes for physics studies at hadron colliders. It is therefore important to have accurate theoretical predictions. In this work we compute the two-loop virtual mixed QCD x QED corrections to Drell-Yan production. We evaluate the Feynman diagrams by decomposing the amplitudes into a set of known master integrals and their coefficients, which allows us to derive an analytical result. We also perform a detailed study of the ultraviolet and infrared structure of the two-loop amplitude and the corresponding poles in epsilon.

Higgs Pseudo-Observables, Second Riemann Sheet and All That

The relation between physical observables measured at LHC and Tevatron and standard model Higgs pseudo-observables (production cross section and partial decay widths) is revised by extensively using the notion of the Higgs complex pole on the second Riemann sheet of the $S $-matrix. The extension of their definition to higher orders is considered, confronting the problems that arise when QED(QCD) corrections are included in computing realistic observables. Numerical results are presented for pseudo-observables related to the standard model Higgs boson decay and production. The relevance of the result for exclusion plots of the standard model Higgs boson for high masses (up to $600 $GeV) is discussed. Furthermore, a recipe for the analytical continuation of Feynman loop integrals from real to complex internal masses and complex Mandelstam invariants is thoroughly discussed.
