Duality for Evolutionary Equations with Applications to Null Controllability

We study evolutionary equations in exponentially weighted $\mathrm{L}^{2}$-spaces as introduced by Picard in 2009. First, for a given evolutionary equation, we explicitly describe the $ν$-adjoint system, which turns out to describe a system backwards in time. We prove well-posedness for the $ν$-adjoint system. We then apply the thus obtained duality to introduce and study notions of null-controllability for evolutionary equations.

Final State Observability in Banach spaces with applications to Subordination and Semigroups induced by L{é}vy processes

This paper generalizes the abstract method of proving an observability estimate by combining an uncertainty principle and a dissipation estimate. In these estimates we allow for a large class of growth/decay rates satisfying an integrability condition. In contrast to previous results, we use an iterative argument which enables us to give an asymptotically sharp estimate for the observation constant and which is explicit in the model parameters. We give two types of applications where the extension of the growth/decay rates naturally appear. By exploiting subordination techniques we show how the dissipation estimate of a semigroup transfers to subordinated semigroups. Furthermore, we apply our results to semigroups related to L{é}vy processes.

On eigenvalue bounds for a general class of Sturm-Liouville operators

We consider Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued weight and potential, and positive, bounded diffusion coefficient which is bounded away from zero. By means of a local periodicity condition, which can be seen as a quantitative Gordon condition, we prove a bound on eigenvalues for the corresponding operator in $L_p$, for $1\leq p<\infty$. We also explain the sharpness of our quantitative bound, and provide an example for quasiperiodic operators.

On the spectrum of operator families on discrete groups over minimal dynamical systems

It is well known that, given an equivariant and continuous (in a suitable sense) family of selfadjoint operators in a Hilbert space over a minimal dynamical system, the spectrum of all operators from that family coincides. As shown recently similar results also hold for suitable families of non-selfadjoint operators in $\ell^p (\ZM)$. Here, we generalize this to a large class of bounded linear operator families on Banach-space valued $\ell^p$-spaces over countable discrete groups. We also provide equality of the pseudospectra for operators in such a family. A main tool for our analysis are techniques from limit operator theory.

Perturbations of positive semigroups on $L_p$-spaces

We give a characterization of a variation of constants type estimate relating two positive semigroups on (possibly different) $L_p$-spaces to one another in terms of corresponding estimates for the respective generators and of estimates for the respective resolvents. The results have applications to kernel estimates for semigroups induced by accretive and non-local forms on $σ$-finite measure spaces.

Note on spectra of non-selfadjoint operators over dynamical systems

We consider equivariant continuous families of discrete one-dimensional operators over arbitrary dynamical systems. We introduce the concept of a pseudo-ergodic element of a dynamical system. We then show that all operators associated to pseudo-ergodic elements have the same spectrum and that this spectrum agrees with their essential spectrum. As a consequence we obtain that the spectrum is constant and agrees with the essential spectrum for all elements in the dynamical system if minimality holds.

Uniform existence of the integrated density of states on metric Cayley graphs

Given a finitely generated amenable group we consider ergodic random Schrödinger operators on a Cayley graph with random potentials and random boundary conditions. We show that the normalised eigenvalue counting functions of finite volume parts converge uniformly. The integrated density of states as the limit can be expressed by a Pastur-Shubin formula. The spectrum supports the corresponding measure and discontinuities correspond to the existence of compactly supported eigenfunctions.

Absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for the Kirchhoff Laplacian on radial trees

In this paper we prove that the existence of absolutely continuous spectrum of the Kirchhoff Laplacian on a radial metric tree graph together with a finite complexity of the geometry of the tree implies that the tree is in fact eventually periodic. This complements the results by Breuer and Frank in \cite{BreuerFrank2009} in the discrete case as well as for sparse trees in the metric case.

Boundary systems and (skew-)self-adjoint operators on infinite metric graphs

We generalize the notion of Lagrangian subspaces to self-orthogonal subspaces with respect to a (skew-)symmetric form, thus characterizing (skew-)self-adjoint and unitary operators by means of self-ortho-gonal subspaces. By orthogonality preserving mappings, these characterizations can be transferred to abstract boundary value spaces of (skew-)symmetric operators. Introducing the notion of boundary systems we then present a unified treatment of different versions of boundary triples and related concepts treated in the literature. The application of the abstract results yields a description of all (skew-)self-adjoint realizations of Laplace and first derivative operators on graphs.

Zero measure Cantor spectra for continuum one-dimensional quasicrystals

We study Schrödinger operators on $\R$ with measures as potentials. Choosing a suitable subset of measures we can work with a dynamical system consisting of measures. We then relate properties of this dynamical system with spectral properties of the associated operators. The constant spectrum in the strictly ergodic case coincides with the union of the zeros of the Lyapunov exponent and the set of non-uniformities of the transfer matrices. This result enables us to prove Cantor spectra of zero Lebesgue measure for a large class of operator families, including many operator families generated by aperiodic subshifts.
