Transfer matrices for discrete Hermitian operators and absolutely continuous spectrum

We introduce a transfer matrix method for the spectral analysis of discrete Hermitian operators with locally finite hopping. Such operators can be associated with a locally finite graph structure and the method works in principle on any such graph. The key result is a spectral averaging formula well known for Jacobi or 1-channel operators giving the spectral measure at a root vector by a weak limit of products of transfer matrices. Here, we assume an increase in the rank for the connections between spherical shells which is a typical situation and true on finite dimensional lattices Zd\mathbb{Z}^d. The product of transfer matrices are considered as a transformation of the relations of 'boundary resolvent data' along the shells. The trade off is that at each level or shell with more forward then backward connections (rank-increase) we have a set of transfer matrices at a fixed spectral parameter. Still, considering these products we can relate the minimal norm growth over the set of all products with the spectral measure at the root and obtain several criteria for absolutely continuous spectrum. Finally, we give some example of operators on stair-like graphs (increasing width) which has absolutely continuous spectrum with a sufficiently fast decaying random shell-matrix-potential.

Anderson transition at 2 dimensional growth rate on antitrees and spectral theory for operators with one propagating channel

We show that the Anderson model has a transition from localization to delocalization at exactly 2 dimensional growth rate on antitrees with normalized edge weights which are certain discrete graphs. The kinetic part has a one-dimensional structure allowing a description through transfer matrices which involve some Schur complement. For such operators we introduce the notion of having one propagating channel and extend theorems from the theory of one-dimensional Jacobi operators that relate the behavior of transfer matrices with the spectrum. These theorems are then applied to the considered model. In essence, in a certain energy region the kinetic part averages the random potentials along shells and the transfer matrices behave similar as for a one-dimensional operator with random potential of decaying variance. At dd dimensional growth for d>2d>2 this effective decay is strong enough to obtain absolutely continuous spectrum, whereas for some uniform dd dimensional growth with d<2d<2 one has pure point spectrum in this energy region. At exactly uniform 22 dimensional growth also some singular continuous spectrum appears, at least at small disorder. As a corollary we also obtain a change from singular spectrum (d≤2d\leq 2) to absolutely continuous spectrum (d≥3)d\geq 3) for random operators of the type PrΔdPr+λV\mathcal{P}_r Δ_d \mathcal{P}_r+λ\mathcal{V} on Zd\mathbb{Z}^d, where Pr\mathcal{P}_r is an orthogonal radial projection, ΔdΔ_d the discrete adjacency operator (Laplacian) on Zd\mathbb{Z}^d and λVλ\mathcal{V} a random potential.

A Herman-Avila-Bochi formula for higher dimensional pseudo-unitary and hermitian-symplectic cocycles

A Herman-Avila-Bochi type formula is obtained for the average sum of the top d Lyapunov exponents over a one-parameter family of G-cocycles, where G is the group that leaves a certain, non-degenerate hermitian form of signature (c,d) invariant. The generic example of such a group is the pseudo-unitary group U(c,d) or in the case c=d, the hermitian-symplectic group HSp(2d) which naturally appears for cocycles related to Schrödinger operators. In the case d=1, the formula for HSp(2d) cocycles reduces to the Herman-Avila-Bochi formula for SL(2,R) cocycles.

Absolutely Continuous Spectrum for Random Schroedinger Operators on the Bethe Strip

The Bethe Strip of width mm is the cartesian product $\B\times\{1,...,m\}$, where $\B$ is the Bethe lattice (Cayley tree). We prove that Anderson models on the Bethe strip have "extended states" for small disorder. More precisely, we consider Anderson-like Hamiltonians $\;H_λ=\frac12 Δ\otimes 1 + 1 \otimes A + λ\Vv$ on a Bethe strip with connectivity K≥2K \geq 2, where AA is an m×mm\times m symmetric matrix, $\Vv$ is a random matrix potential, and λλ is the disorder parameter. Given any closed interval I⊂(−K+amax,K+amin)I\subset (-\sqrt{K}+a_{\mathrm{max}},\sqrt{K}+a_{\mathrm{min}}), where amina_{\mathrm{min}} and amaxa_{\mathrm{max}} are the smallest and largest eigenvalues of the matrix AA, we prove that for λλ small the random Schrödinger operator   Hλ\;H_λ has purely absolutely continuous spectrum in II with probability one and its integrated density of states is continuously differentiable on the interval II.

Relations between Transfer and Scattering Matrices in the presence of Hyperbolic Channels

We consider a cable described by a discrete, space-homogeneous, quasi one-dimensional Schrödinger operator H0H_0. We study the scattering by a finite disordered piece (the scatterer) inserted inside this cable. For energies EE where H0H_0 has only elliptic channels we use the Lippmann-Schwinger equations to show that the scattering matrix and the transfer matrix, written in an appropriate basis, are related by a certain polar decomposition. For energies EE where H0H_0 has hyperbolic channels we show that the scattering matrix is related to a reduced transfer matrix and both are of smaller dimension than the transfer matrix. Moreover, in this case the scattering matrix is determined from a limit of larger dimensional scattering matrices, as follows: We take a piece of the cable of length mm, followed by the scatterer and another piece of the cable of length mm, consider the scattering matrix of these three joined pieces inserted inside an ideal lead at energy EE (ideal means only elliptic channels), and take the limit m→∞m\to\infty.

Ballistic Behavior for Random Schrödinger Operators on the Bethe Strip

The Bethe Strip of width mm is the cartesian product $\B\times\{1,...,m\}$, where $\B$ is the Bethe lattice (Cayley tree). We consider Anderson-like Hamiltonians $H_λ=\frac12 Δ\otimes 1 + 1 \otimes A+λ\Vv$ on a Bethe strip with connectivity K≥2K \geq 2, where AA is an m×mm\times m symmetric matrix, $\Vv$ is a random matrix potential, and λλ is the disorder parameter. Under certain conditions on AA and KK, for which we previously proved the existence of absolutely continuous spectrum for small λλ, we now obtain ballistic behavior for the spreading of wave packets evolving under HλH_λ for small λλ.

Dissipative dynamics in semiconductors at low temperature

A mathematical model is introduced which describes the dissipation of electrons in lightly doped semi-conductors. The dissipation operator is proved to be densely defined and positive and to generate a Markov semigroup of operators. The spectrum of the dissipation operator is studied and it is shown that zero is a simple eigenvalue, which makes the equilibrium state unique. Also it is shown that there is a gap between zero and the rest of its spectrum which makes the return to equilibrium exponentially fast in time.

Random Lie group actions on compact manifolds: A perturbative analysis

A random Lie group action on a compact manifold generates a discrete time Markov process. The main object of this paper is the evaluation of associated Birkhoff sums in a regime of weak, but sufficiently effective coupling of the randomness. This effectiveness is expressed in terms of random Lie algebra elements and replaces the transience or Furstenberg's irreducibility hypothesis in related problems. The Birkhoff sum of any given smooth function then turns out to be equal to its integral w.r.t. a unique smooth measure on the manifold up to errors of the order of the coupling constant. Applications to the theory of products of random matrices and a model of a disordered quantum wire are presented.

Random Dirac operators with time-reversal symmetry

Quasi-one-dimensional stochastic Dirac operators with an odd number of channels, time reversal symmetry but otherwise efficiently coupled randomness are shown to have one conducting channel and absolutely continuous spectrum of multiplicity two. This follows by adapting the criteria of Guivarch-Raugi and Goldsheid-Margulis to the analysis of random products of matrices in the group SO∗(2L)^*(2L), and then a version of Kotani theory for these operators. Absence of singular spectrum can be shown by adapting an argument of Jaksic-Last if the potential contains random Dirac peaks with absolutely continuous distribution.

Positive Lyapunov exponents and localization bounds for strongly mixing potentials

For a one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with a weakly coupled potential given by a strongly mixing dynamical system with power law decay of correlations, we derive for all energies including the band edges and the band center a perturbative formula for the Lyapunov exponent. Under adequate hypothesis, this shows that the Lyapunov exponent is positive on the whole spectrum. This in turn implies that the Hausdorff dimension of the spectral measure is zero and that the associated quantum dynamics grows at most logarithmically in time.
