Turbulent characteristics within roughness sublayer over spanwise homogeneous transversal bars

Turbulent characteristics within shear layer have been studied, recently, within vegetative canopy, buildings, dunes. Kevin-Helmholtz instability triggered hairpin vortex shedding has been widely concluded as the "signature" of mixing layer analogy. However, convoluted roughness types complicate the observing practice of turbulent evolving progress. To simplify that, spanwise homogeneous roughness has been adopted in this work to capture the streamwise flow alternations under different streamwise roughness element distances. Streamwise successive object distance $λ_x$ is used to show the roughness element distance. The transitional trends from turbulent channel flow to canopy flow have been observed from Case 1 to Case 4. However, when $λ_x/h<1.0$, as successive distance decreases, the evidences indicate turbulent flow is transferring from canopy flow into channel flow from Case 4 to Case 6. Instantaneous results verifies the enhancement of turbulent mixing and decreasing turbulent coherency. The attached-eddy hypothesis (AEH) becomes valid in $λ_x/h<1.0$ Cases. Meanwhile, Reynolds-averaged flow results show the roughness shear "curve" effectiveness will decrease when $λ_x$ keeps decreasing after $λ_x/h<1.0$. The probability density function (PDF) of three fluctuating variables on a sampling point over element display the "increasing-decreasing" trend of decreasing spacing effect on upper region, wherein the maximal effect emerges in Case 2 and 3. And the swirling structural visualizations also demonstrate the progress of turbulent structure changing in roughness sublayer at different streamwise successive object distances. Finally, the instantaneous results show wall-normal momentum flux transports and turbulence swirling structures are correlated to the element spacing.

Enhanced Magnetization and Conductivity in NiFe2O4

Different configurations of magnetic orders and cation distributions for NiFe2O4 are studied by the density functional based methods with the possible inclusion of the on-site Coulomb interaction U. The lowest energy state is an inverse spinel structure of tetragonal space group P4322 with Ni locating at the octahedral site (B site) while the Fe distributing equally at the tetrahedral (A site) and octahedral site and with antiparallel moments between cations at A and B sites. However, a quadruple enhanced magnetization is obtained for a structure with the same cation distribution as that of the lowest energy state, i.e. still an inverse spinel structure, but with antiparallel moments between Ni and Fe cations. Its energy is higher than that of the ground state by about 0.4eV/fomula. Both phases are insulating. Another phase with enhanced magnetization is a normal spinel structure with Ni and Fe locating at A and B site respectively, i.e. corresponding to a structure of cation inversion. Its electronic structure displays a conductive and nearly half-metallic behavior. These two phases could be the possible candidates for the experimentally observed NiFe2O4 thin films possessing considerably enhanced magnetization but different electric properties, i.e. one insulating and the other conductive with spin-polarized current.

Atomic and magnetic structures of (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ and (CuBr)LaNb$_2$O$_7$: Density functional calculations

The atomic and magnetic structures of (Cu$X$)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ ($X$=Cl and Br) are investigated using the density-functional calculations. Among several dozens of examined structures, an orthorhombic distorted $2\times 2$ structure, in which the displacement pattern of $X$ halogens resembles the model conjectured previously based on the empirical information is identified as the most stable one. The displacements of $X$ halogens, together with those of Cu ions, result in the formation of $X$-Cu-$X$-Cu-$X$ zigzag chains in the two materials. The nearest-neighbor interaction within the zigzag chains are determined to be antiferromagnetic (AFM) for (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ but ferromagnetic (FM) for (CuBr)LaNb$_2$O$_7$. On the other hand, the first two neighboring interactions between the Cu cations from adjacent chains are found to be AFM and FM respectively for both compounds. The magnitudes of all these in-plane exchange couplings in (CuBr)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ are evaluated to be about three times those in (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$. In addition, a sizable AFM inter-plane interaction is found between the Cu ions separated by two NbO$_6$ octahedra. The present study strongly suggests the necessity to go beyond the square $J_1-J_2$ model in order to correctly account for the magnetic property of (Cu$X)$LaNb$_2$O$_7$.

Magnetism in 2D BN$_{1-x}$O$_x$ and B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$N: polarized itinerant and local electrons

We use density functional theory based first-principles methods to study the magnetism in a 2D hexagonal BN sheet induced by the different concentrations of oxygen and silicon atoms substituting for nitrogen (O$_\mathrm{N}$) and boron (Si$_\mathrm{B}$) respectively. We demonstrate the possible formation of three distinct phases based on the magnetization energy calculated self-consistently for the ferromagnetic (ME$_{\mathrm{FM}}$) and antiferromagnetic (ME$_{\mathrm{AFM}}$) states, i.e. the paramagnetic phase with ME$_{\mathrm{FM}}$=ME$_{\mathrm{AFM}}$, the ferromagnetic phase with ME$_{\mathrm{FM}}$$>$ME$_{\mathrm{AFM}}$ and finally the polarized itinerant electrons with finite ME$_{\mathrm{FM}}$ but zero ME$_{\mathrm{AFM}}$. While the O$_\mathrm{N}$ system was found to exist in all three phases, no tendency towards the formation of the polarized itinerant electrons was observed for the Si$_\mathrm{B}$ system though the existence of the other two phases was ascertained. The different behavior of these two systems is associated with the diverse features in the magnetization energy as a function of the oxygen and silicon concentrations. Finally, the robustness of the polarized itinerant electron phase is also discussed with respect to the O substitute atom distributions and the applied strains to the system.
