Excited Heavy Baryons and Their Symmetries II: Effective Theory

We develop an effective theory for heavy baryons and their excited states. The approach is based on the contracted O(8) symmetry recently shown to emerge from QCD for these states in the combined large N_c and heavy quark limits. The effective theory is based on perturbations about this limit; a power counting scheme is developed in which the small parameter is lambda^{1/2} where lambda ~ 1/N_c, Lambda /m_Q (with Lambda being a typical strong interaction scale). We derive the effective Hamiltonian for strong interactions at next-to-leading order. The next-to-leading order effective Hamiltonian depends on only two parameters beyond the known masses of the nucleon and heavy meson. We also show that the effective operators for certain electroweak transitions can be obtained with no unknown parameters at next-to-leading order.

Excited Heavy Baryons and Their Symmetries III: Phenomenology

Phenomenological applications of an effective theory of low-lying excited states of charm and bottom isoscalar baryons are discussed at leading and next-to-leading order in the combined heavy quark and large NcN_c expansion. The combined expansion is formulated in terms of the counting parameter λ∼1/mQ,1/Ncλ\sim 1/m_Q, 1/N_c; the combined expansion is in powers of λ1/2λ^{1/2}. We work up to next-to-leading order. We obtain model-independent predictions for the excitation energies, the semileptonic form factors and electromagnetic decay rates. The spin-averaged mass of the doublet of the first orbitally excited sate of ΛbΛ_b is predicted to be approximately 5920MeV5920 MeV. It is shown that in the combined limit at leading and next-to-leading order there is only one independent form factor describing Λb→ΛcℓνˉΛ_b \to Λ_c \ell \barν; similarly, Λb→Λc∗ℓνˉΛ_b \to Λ_{c}^{*} \ell \barν and Λb→Λc1ℓνˉΛ_b \to Λ_{c1} \ell \barν decays are described by a single independent form factor. These form factors are calculated at leading and next-to-leading order in the combined expansion. The electromagnetic decay rates of the first excited states of ΛcΛ_c and ΛbΛ_b are determined at leading and next-to leading order. The ratio of radiative decay rates Γ(Λc∗→Λcγ)/Γ(Λb1→Λbγ)Γ(Λ_{c}^{*} \to Λ_c γ) / Γ(Λ_{b1} \to Λ_b γ) is predicted to be approximately 0.2, greatly different from the heavy quark effective theory value of unity.

Discretization Errors and Rotational Symmetry: The Laplacian Operator on Non-Hypercubical Lattices

Discretizations of the Laplacian operator on non-hypercubical lattices are discussed in a systematic approach. It is shown that order a2a^2 errors always exist for discretizations involving only nearest neighbors. Among all lattices with the same density of lattice sites, the hypercubical lattices always have errors smaller than other lattices with the same number of spacetime dimensions. On the other hand, the four dimensional checkerboard lattice (also known as the Celmaster lattice) is the only lattice which is isotropic at order a2a^2. Explicit forms of the discretized Laplacian operators on root lattices are presented, and different ways of eliminating order a2a^2 errors are discussed.

Hybrid Baryons in Large-N_c QCD

We study the properties and couplings of hybrid baryons in the large-NcN_c expansion. These are color-neutral baryon states which contain in addition to NcN_c quarks also one constituent gluon. Hybrid baryons with both symmetric and mixed symmetric orbital wave functions are considered. We introduce a Hartree description for these states, similar to the one used by Witten for ordinary baryons. It is shown that the Hartree equations for Nc(Nc−1)N_c (N_c-1) quarks for symmetric (mixed symmetric) states in these states coincide with those in ordinary baryons in the large-NcN_c limit. The energy due to the gluon field is of order ΛQCDΛ_{QCD}. Under the assumption of color confinement, our results prove the existence of hybrid baryons made up of heavy quarks in the large NcN_c limit and provides a justification for the constituent gluon picture of these states. The couplings of the hybrid baryons to mesons of arbitrary spin are computed in the quark model. Using constraints from the large NcN_c scaling laws for the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes, we write down consistency conditions for the meson couplings of the hybrid baryons. These consistency conditions are solved explicitly with results in agreement with those in the quark model for the respective couplings.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for Tensor Mesons

Interactions of a2,K2∗,f2a_2, K^*_2, f_2 and f2′f_2' tensor-mesons with low-energy π,K,η,η′π, K, η, η' pseudo-scalar mesons are constrained by chiral symmetry. We derive a chiral Lagrangian of tensor mesons in which the tensor mesons are treated as heavy non-relativistic matter fields. Using 1/Nc1/N_c counting, we derive relations among unknown couplings of the chiral Lagrangian. Chiral perturbation theory is applied to the tensor-meson mass matrix. At one-loop there are large corrections to the individual tensor meson masses, but the singlet-octet mixing angle remains almost unchanged. We argue that all heavy mesons of spin ≥1\ge 1 share common feature of chiral dynamics.

More Conservation Laws and Sum Rules in the Heavy Quark Limit

This is the continuation of a previous article, in which the Bjorken and Voloshin sum rules were interpreted as statements of conservation of probability and energy. Here the formalism is extended to higher moments of the Hamiltonian operator. From the conservation of the second moment of the Hamiltonian operator one can derive a sum rule which, in the small velocity limit, reduces to the Bigi--Grozin--Shifman--Uraltsev--Vainshtein (BGSUV) sum rule. On the other hand, the conservation of the third moment of the Hamiltonian operator gives a new sum rule, which is related to the matrix element of the heavy quark counterpart of the Darwin term in atomic physics. The general case of the higher order moments is also discussed.

From Tetraquark to Hexaquark: A Systematic Study of Heavy Exotics in the Large NcN_c Limit

A systematic study of multiquark exotics with one or Nc−1N_c-1 heavy quarks in the large NcN_c limit is presented. By binding a chiral soliton to a heavy meson, either a normal NcN_c-quark baryon or an exotic (Nc+2)(N_c+2)-quark baryon is obtained. By replacing the heavy quark with Nc−1N_c-1 heavy antiquarks, exotic (2Nc−2)(2N_c-2)-quark and 2Nc2N_c-quark mesons are obtained. When Nc=3N_c = 3, they are just the normal triquark baryon QqqQqq, the exotic pentaquark baryon QqˉqˉqˉqˉQ\bar q\bar q\bar q\bar q, tetraquark di-meson QˉQˉqq\bar Q \bar Q qq and the hexaquark di-baryon QˉQˉqˉqˉ barqqˉ\bar Q \bar Q \bar q \bar q\ bar q \bar q respectively. Their stabilities and decays are also discussed. In particular, it is shown that the ``heavy to heavy'' semileptonic decays are described by the Isgur--Wise form factors of the normal baryons.
