Color-Singlet and Color-Octet Quark Matters

Quarks and antiquarks carry color and electric charges and belong to the color-triplet $3$ group and the color-antitriplet $\bar 3$ group respectively. The product groups of $3$ and $\bar 3$ consist of the color-singlet $1$ and the color-octet $8$ subgroups. Therefore, quarks and antiquarks combine to form color-singlet $[q \bar q]^1$ quark matter and color-octet $[q \bar q]^8$ quark matter. The color-octet quark matter corresponds to the $q\bar q$ quark matter as envisaged in the realm of present knowledge but the color-singlet quark matter is as yet unexplored and now submitted for exploration. The color-singlet quark matter with two flavors can be separated into charged and neutral color-singlet quark matters. In the neutral color-singlet quark matter, the quark and the antiquark interacting only in the QED interaction may form stable and confined colorless QED mesons non-perturbatively at about 17 MeV and 38 MeV (PRC81,064903(2010) and JHEP(2020(8),165). It is proposed that the possible existence of the QED mesons may be a signature of the neutral color-singlet quark matter at $T=0$. The observations of the anomalous soft photons at CERN, and the anomalous bosons with mass about 17 MeV at ATOMKI, DUBNA, and HUS, and mass about 38 MeV at DUBNA hold promising experimental evidence for the existence of such QED mesons, pending further confirmations.

On the stability of the open-string QED neutron and dark matter

We study the stability of a hypothetical QED neutron, which consists of a color-singlet system of two $d$ quarks and a $u$ quark interacting with the QED interaction. As a quark cannot be isolated, the intrinsic motion of the three quarks in the lowest-energy state may lie predominantly in 1+1 dimensions, as in a $d$-$u$-$d$ open string. The attractive $d$-$u$ and $u$-$d$ QED interactions may overcome the weaker repulsive $d$-$d$ QED interaction to bind the three quarks together. We examine the QED neutron in a phenomenological three-body problem in 1+1 dimensions with an effective interaction extracted from Schwinger's exact QED solution in 1+1 dimensions. The phenomenological model in a variational calculation yields a stable QED neutron at 44.5 MeV. The analogous QED proton with two $u$ quarks and a $d$ quark has been found to be too repulsive to be stable and does not have a bound or continuum state, onto which the QED neutron can decay via the weak interaction. Consequently, the QED neutron is stable against the weak decay, has a long lifetime, and is in fact a QED dark neutron. It may be produced following the deconfinement-to-confinement phase transition of the quark gluon plasma in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Because of the long lifetime of the QED dark neutron, self-gravitating assemblies of QED dark neutrons or dark antineutrons may be good candidates for a part of the primordial dark matter produced during the phase transition of the quark gluon plasma in the evolution of the early Universe.

QED Mesons, the QED Neutron, and the Dark Matter

Schwinger's boson solution for massless fermions in QED in 1+1D has been applied and generalized to quarks interacting in QED and QCD interactions, leading to stable and confined open-string QED and QCD boson excitations of the quark-QCD-QED system in 1+1D. Just as the open-string QCD excitations in 1+1D can be the idealization of QCD mesons with a flux tube in 3+1D, so the open-string QED excitations in 1+1D may likewise be the idealization of QED mesons with masses in the tens of MeV region, corresponding possibly to the anomalous X17 and E38 particles observed recently. A further search for bound states of quarks interacting in the QED interaction alone leads to the examination on the stability of the QED neutron, consisting of two $d$ quarks and one $u$ quark. Theoretically, the QED neutron has been found to be stable and estimated to have a mass of 44.5 MeV, whereas the analogous QED proton is unstable, leading to a long-lived QED neutron that may be a good candidate for the dark matter.

On the clustering properties of produced particles in high-energy $pp$ collisions

Minijets provide useful information on parton interactions in the low transverse-momentum (low-$p_T$) region. Because minijets produce clusters, we study the clustering properties of produced particles in high-energy $pp$ collisions as a first step to identify minijets. We develop an algorithm to find clusters by using the k-means clustering method, in conjunction with a k-number (cluster number) selection principle in the space of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angles. We test the clustering algorithm using events generated by PYTHIA 8.1, for $pp$ collision at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. We find that clustering of low-$p_T$ hadrons occurs in high multiplicity events. However similar clustering properties are also present for particles produced randomly in a finite pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle space. To distinguish the dynamics from random generations of events, it is necessary to examine the correlation between particles and between clusters. We find that the correlations between clusters may provide a useful tool to distinguish the underlying dynamics of the reaction mechanism.

Open string QED meson description of the X17 particle and dark matter

As a quark and an antiquark cannot be isolated, the intrinsic motion of a composite $q \bar q$ system in its lowest-energy states lies predominantly in 1+1 dimensions, as in an open string with the quark and the antiquark at its two ends. Accordingly, we study the lowest-energy states of an open string $q\bar q$ system in QCD and QED in 1+1 dimensions. We show that $π^0, η$, and $η'$ can be adequately described as open string $q\bar q$ QCD mesons. By extrapolating into the $q\bar q$ QED sector in which a quark and an antiquark interact with the QED interaction, we find an open string isoscalar $I(J^π)$=$0(0^-)$ QED meson state at 17.9$\pm$1.5 MeV and an isovector $(I(J^π)$=$1(0^-), I_3$=0) QED meson state at 36.4$\pm$3.8 MeV. The predicted masses of the isoscalar and isovector QED mesons are close to the masses of the hypothetical X17 and E38 particles observed recently, making them good candidates for these particles. The decay products of QED mesons may show up as excess $e^+e^-$ and $γγ$ pairs in the anomalous soft photon phenomenon associated with hadron productions in high-energy hadron-proton collisions and $e^+$-$e^-$ annihilations. Measurements of the invariant masses of excess $e^+e^-$ and $γγ$ pairs will provide tests for the existence of the open string $q\bar q$ QED mesons. An assembly of gravitating QED mesons are expected to emit electron-positron pairs and/or gamma rays and their decay energies and lifetimes will be modified by their gravitational binding energies. Consequently, a self-gravitating isoscalar QED meson assembly whose mass $M$ and radius $R$ satisfy $(M/M_\odot)/(R/R_\odot) \gtrsim 4.71 \times 10^5$ will not produce electron-positron pairs nor gamma rays and may be a good candidate for the primordial dark matter.

Toroidal States of the $^{12}$C Nucleus

Among the states of $^{12}$C, there is an important subset of $K$=0 and $K$=$I$ planar intrinsic states in which the intrinsic motion of the nucleons are confined in the planar region defined by the three-alpha cluster or by their generated toroid. The intrinsic nuclear densities of these states are toroidal in nature. We study these $^{12}$C toroidal states from the generator-coordinate viewpoints in both the alpha cluster model and the toroidal shell model. Numerical solutions in the toroidal mean field approximation are examined to pave the way for future extensions and refinements.

Nuclear annihilation by antinucleons

We examine the momentum dependence of $\bar p$$p$ and $\bar n$$p$ annihilation cross sections by considering the transmission through a nuclear potential and the $\bar p p$ Coulomb interaction. Compared to the $\bar n p$ annihilation cross section, the $\bar p p$ annihilation cross section is significantly enhanced by the Coulomb interaction for projectile momenta below $p_{\rm lab} <$ 500 MeV/$c$, and the two annihilation cross sections approach the Pomeranchuk's equality limit [JETP Lett. {\bb 30}, 423 (1956)] at $p_{\rm lab}\sim 500$ MeV/$c$. Using these elementary cross sections as the basic input data, the extended Glauber model is employed to evaluate the annihilation cross sections for $\bar n$ and $\bar p$ interaction with nuclei and the results compare well with experimental data.

Analytical Expressions for the Hard-Scattering Production of Massive Partons

We obtain explicit expressions for the two-particle differential cross section and the two-particle angular correlation function in the hard-scattering production of massive partons in order to exhibit the ``ridge" structure on the away side in the hard-scattering process. The single-particle production cross section is also obtained and compared with the ALICE experimental data for charm production in pp collisions at 7 TeV at LHC.

Chaoticity and Coherence in Bose-Einstein Condensation and Correlations

We review the properties of chaoticity and coherence in Bose-Einstein condensation and correlations, for a dense boson system in its mean-field represented approximately by a harmonic oscillator potential. The order parameter and the nature of the phase transition from the chaotic to the condensate states are studied for different fixed numbers of bosons. The two-particle correlation function in momentum space is calculated to investigate how the Bose-Einstein correlation depends on the degree of condensation and other momentum variables. We generalize the Bose-Einstein correlation analysis to three-particle correlations to show its dependence on the degree of condensation.

From QCD-based hard-scattering to nonextensive statistical mechanical descriptions of transverse momentum spectra in high-energy $pp$ and $p\bar p$ collisions

Transverse spectra of both jets and hadrons obtained in high-energy $pp$ and $p\bar p $ collisions at central rapidity exhibit power-law behavior of $1/p_T^n$ at high $p_T$. The power index $n$ is 4-5 for jet production and is 6-10 for hadron production. Furthermore, the hadron spectra spanning over 14 orders of magnitude down to the lowest $p_T$ region in $pp$ collisions at LHC can be adequately described by a single nonextensive statistical mechanical distribution that is widely used in other branches of science. This suggests indirectly the possible dominance of the hard-scattering process over essentially the whole $p_T$ region at central rapidity in high-energy $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions. We show here direct evidences of such a dominance of the hard-scattering process by investigating the power indices of UA1 and ATLAS jet spectra over an extended $p_T$ region and the two-particle correlation data of the STAR and PHENIX Collaborations in high-energy $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at central rapidity. We then study how the showering of the hard-scattering product partons alters the power index of the hadron spectra and leads to a hadron distribution that may be cast into a single-particle nonextensive statistical mechanical distribution. Because of such a connection, the nonextensive statistical mechanical distribution may be considered as a lowest-order approximation of the hard-scattering of partons followed by the subsequent process of parton showering that turns the jets into hadrons, in high energy $pp$ and $p\bar p$ collisions.

Longitudinal hydrodynamics from event-by-event Landau initial conditions

We investigate three-dimensional ideal hydrodynamic evolution, with Landau initial conditions, incorporating event-by-event variation with many events and transverse density inhomogeneities. We show that the transition to boost-invariant flow occurs too late for realistic setups, with corrections of $\order{20-30\%}$ expected at freezeout for most scenarios. Moreover, the deviation from boost-invariance is correlated with both transverse flow and elliptic flow, with the more highly transversely flowing regions also showing the most violation of boost invariance. Therefore, if longitudinal flow is not fully developed at the early stages of heavy ion collisions, hydrodynamics where boost-invariance holds at mid-rapidity is inadequate to extract transport coefficients of the quark-gluon plasma. We conclude by arguing that developing experimental probes of boost invariance is necessary, and suggest some promising directions in this regard.

Particle-hole nature of the light high-spin toroidal isomers

Nuclei under non-collective rotation with a large angular momentum above some threshold can assume a toroidal shape. In our previous work, we showed by using cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach that even-even, N=Z, high-K, toroidal isomeric states may have general occurrences for light nuclei with 28<=A<=52. We present here some additional results and systematics on the particle-hole nature of these high-spin toroidal isomers.

Signature of the Fragmentation of a Color Flux Tube

The production of quark-antiquark pairs along a color flux tube precedes the fragmentation of the tube. Because of local conservation laws, the production of a $q$-$\bar q$ pair will lead to correlations of adjacently produced mesons (mostly pions). Adjacently produced mesons however can be signalled by their rapidity difference $Δy$ falling within the window of $|Δy | $$\lesssim$$ 1/(dN/dy)$, on account of the space-time-rapidity ordering of produced mesons in a flux tube fragmentation. Therefore, the local conservation laws of momentum, charge, and flavor will lead to a suppression of angular correlation function $dN/(dΔϕ\, dΔy)$ for two mesons with opposite charges or strangeness on the near side at $(Δϕ, Δy)$$ \sim$0, but an enhanced correlation on the back-to-back, away side at $Δϕ$$\sim$$ π$, within the window of $|Δy |$$\lesssim$$ 1/(dN/dy)$. These properties can be used as signatures for the fragmentation of a color flux tube. The gross features of the signature of flux tube fragmentation for two oppositely charged mesons are qualitatively consistent with the STAR and NA61/SHINE angular correlation data for two hadrons with opposite charges in the low-$p_T$ region in high-energy $pp$ collisions.

Toroidal high-spin isomers in light nuclei with N not equal to Z

The combined considerations of both the bulk liquid-drop-type behavior and the quantized aligned rotation with cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach revealed previously [Phys. Lett. B 738 (2014) 401] that even-even, N=Z, toroidal high-spin isomeric states have general occurrences for light nuclei with A between 28 and 52. We find that in this mass region there are in addition N not equal to Z toroidal high-spin isomers when the single-particle shells for neutrons and protons occur at the same cranked frequency $\hbar ω$. Examples of N not equal to Z toroidal high-spin isomers, $^{36}_{16}$S$_{20}$($I$=74$\hbar$) and $^{40}_{18}$Ar$_{22}$($I$=80,102$\hbar$), are located and examined. The systematic properties of these N not equal to Z toroidal high-spin isomers fall into the same regular (muti-particle)-(muti-hole) patterns as other N=Z toroidal high-spin isomers.

An Overview of the Anomalous Soft Photons in Hadron Production

Productions of soft photon with low transverse momenta in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions and $e^+$-$e^-$ annihilations indicate that they are consistently produced in excess of what are predicted by electromagnetic bremsstrahlung when hadrons (mostly mesons) are produced, but they agree with electromagnetic bremsstrahlung predictions in the absence of hadron production. These excess soft photons are called anomalous soft photons. The occurrence of anomalous soft photons in association with hadron production reveals the presence of additional QED soft photon sources in QCD hadron production. Many different models have been proposed to explain the anomalous soft production. We shall examine specifically a quantum field theory of simultaneous meson and soft photon production in QCDxQED in which the meson production arises from the oscillation of color charge densities of the quarks of the underlying vacuum in a flux tube. As a quark carries both a color charge and an electric charge, the oscillation of the color charge densities will be accompanied by the oscillation of electric charge densities, which will in turn lead to the simultaneous production of anomalous soft photons during the meson production process.

Analytical Solutions of Landau (1+1)-Dimensional Hydrodynamics

To help guide our intuition, summarize important features, and point out essential elements, we review the analytical solutions of Landau (1+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics and exhibit the full evolution of the dynamics from the very beginning to subsequent times. Special emphasis is placed on the matching and the interplay between the Khalatnikov solution and the Riemann simple wave solution at the earliest times and in the edge regions at later times. These analytical solutions collected and developed here serve well as a useful guide and cross-check in the development of complicated numerically-intensive relativistic hydrodynamical Monte Carlo simulations.

We outline unique aspects of these equations for QED bound states that distinguish them among the various other approaches to the relativistic two body problem. Finally we discuss recent theorectial solutions of new peculiar bound states for positronium arising from the Two Body Dirac equations of constraint dynamics, assuming point particles for the electron and the positron.

Chaoticity parameter $λ$ in two-pion interferometry in an expanding boson gas model

We investigate the chaoticity parameter $λ$ in two-pion interferometry in an expanding boson gas model. The degree of Bose-Einstein condensation of identical pions, density distributions, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlation functions are calculated for the expanding gas within the mean-field description with a harmonic oscillator potential. The results indicate that a sources with thousands of identical pions may exhibit a degree of Bose-Einstein condensation at the temperatures during the hadronic phase in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. This finite condensation may decrease the chaoticity parameter $λ$ in the two-pion interferometry measurements at low pion pair momenta, but influence only slightly the $λ$ value at high pion pair momentum.

Extended Glauber Model of Antiproton-Nucleus Annihilation for All Energies and Mass Numbers

Previous analytical formulas in the Glauber model for high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions developed by Wong are utilized and extended to study antiproton-nucleus annihilations for both high and low energies, after taking into account the effects of Coulomb and nuclear interactions, and the change of the antiproton momentum inside a nucleus. The extended analytical formulas capture the main features of the experimental antiproton-nucleus annihilation cross sections for all energies and mass numbers. At high antiproton energies, they exhibit the granular property for the lightest nuclei and the black-disk limit for the heavy nuclei. At low antiproton energies, they display the effect of the antiproton momentum increase due to the nuclear interaction for the light nuclei, and the effect of the magnification due to the attractive Coulomb interaction for the heavy nuclei.

Foundation of Hydrodynamics of Strongly Interacting Systems

Hydrodynamics and quantum mechanics have many elements in common, as the density field and velocity fields are common variables that can be constructed in both descriptions. Starting with the Schroedinger equation and the Klein-Gordon for a single particle in hydrodynamical form, we examine the basic assumptions under which a quantum system of particles interacting through their mean fields can be described by hydrodynamics.

On the Question of the Point-Particle Nature of the Electron

The electron and the positron treated as point particles in the Two Body Dirac equations of constraint dynamics for QED possess a new and as yet undiscovered peculiar ${}^1S_0$ bound-state which has a very large binding energy of about 300 keV, in addition to the usual ${}^1S_0$ positronium state with a binding energy of 6.8 eV. The production and detection of the peculiar ${}^1S_0$ state provide a test of the electron point-charge property. As the peculiar ${}^1S_0$ state lies lower than the usual ${}^1S_0$ state, the peculiar ${}^1S_0$ state can be produced by a two-photon decay of the usual $^{1}S_{0}$ state. We estimate the rate of the two-photon decay and show how it depends on the probability $P_{up}$ of the admixture of the peculiar component in the predominantly usual ${}^1S_0$ positronium. The produced peculiar ${}^1S_0$ state in turn annihilates into two photons with a total c.m. energy of about 723 keV. Thus the signature for this new peculiar ${}^1S_0$ positronium bound state would be the decay of the usual ${}^1S_0$ state into four photons, with two energies bunching around 150 and two around 360 keV. Such a four-photon decay of the usual ${}^1S_0$ state will not be present if the electron and positron are not point particles, or if the mixing probability $P_{up}$ is very small.

Possible Implication of a Single Nonextensive $p_T$ Distribution for Hadron Production in High-Energy $pp$ Collisions

Multiparticle production processes in $pp$ collisions at the central rapidity region are usually considered to be divided into independent "soft" and "hard" components. The first is described by exponential (thermal-like) transverse momentum spectra in the low-$p_T$ region with a scale parameter $T$ associated with the temperature of the hadronizing system. The second is governed by a power-like distributions of transverse momenta with power index $n$ at high-$p_T$ associated with the hard scattering between partons. We show that the hard-scattering integral can be approximated as a nonextensive distribution of a quasi-power-law containing a scale parameter $T$ and a power index $n=1/(q -1)$, where $q$ is the nonextensivity parameter. We demonstrate that the whole region of transverse momenta presently measurable at LHC experiments at central rapidity (in which the observed cross sections varies by $14$ orders of magnitude down to the low $p_T$ region) can be adequately described by a single nonextensive distribution. These results suggest the dominance of the hard-scattering hadron-production process and the approximate validity of a "no-hair" statistical-mechanical description of the $p_T$ spectra for the whole $p_T$ region at central rapidity for $pp$ collisions at high-energies.

The transverse-momenta distributions in high-energy $pp$ collisions -- A statistical-mechanical approach

We analyze LHC available data measuring the distribution probability of transverse momenta~$p_T$ in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=0.9\,\textrm{TeV}$ (CMS, ALICE, ATLAS) and $\sqrt{s}=7\,\textrm{TeV}$ (CMS, ATLAS). A remarkably good fitting can be obtained, along fourteen decades in magnitude, by phenomenologically using $q$-statistics for a {\it single} particle of a two-dimensional relativistic ideal gas. The parameters that have been obtained by assuming $\textrm{d}N/p_T\textrm{d}p_T\textrm{d}y \propto e_q^{-E_T/T}$ at mid-rapidity are, in all cases, $q \simeq 1.1$ and $T\simeq 0.13\,\textrm{GeV}$ (which satisfactorily compares with the pion mass). This fact suggests the approximate validity of a "no-hair" statistical-mechanical description of the hard-scattering hadron-production process in which the detailed mechanisms of parton scattering, parton cascades, parton fragmentation, running coupling and other information can be subsumed under the stochastic dynamics in the lowest-order description. In addition to that basic structure, a finer analysis of the data suggests a small oscillatory structure on top of the leading $q$-exponential. The physical origin of such intriguing oscillatory behavior remains elusive, though it could be related to some sort of fractality or scale-invariance within the system.

Chaotic parameter $λ$ in Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometry in an anisotropic boson gas model

Using one- and two-body density matrices, we calculate the spatial and momentum distributions, two-particle Hanbury-Brown Twiss (HBT) correlation functions, and the chaotic parameter $λ$ in HBT interferometry for the systems of boson gas within the harmonic oscillator potentials with anisotropic frequencies in transverse and longitudinal directions. The HBT chaotic parameter, which can be obtained by measuring the correlation functions at zero relative momentum of the particle pair, is related to the degree of Bose-Einstein condensation and thus the system environment. We investigate the effects of system temperature, particle number, and the average momentum of the particle pair on the chaotic parameter. The value of $λ$ decreases with the condensed fraction, $f_0$. It is one for $f_0=0$ and zero for $f_0=1$. For a certain $f_0$ between 0 and 1, we find that $λ$ increases with the average momentum of the particle pair and decreases with the particle number of system. The results of $λ$ are sensitive to the ratio, $ν=ω_z/ω_ρ$, of the frequencies in longitudinal and transverse directions. They are smaller for larger $ν$ when $ω_ρ$ is fixed. In the heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energy the large identical pion multiplicity may possibly lead to a considerable Bose-Einstein condensation. Its effect on the chaotic parameter in two-pion interferometry is worth considering in earnest.

Relativistic Hard-Scattering and Tsallis Fits to pT Spectra in pp Collisions at the LHC

Motivated by the good Tsallis fits to the high-pT spectra in pp collisions at the LHC, we study the relativistic hard-scattering model and obtain an approximate analytical expression for the differential hard-scattering cross section at η~ 0. The power-law behaviour of the transverse spectra, in the form of dσ/dpT^2 \propto 1/pT^n, gives a power index n in the range of 4.5-5.5 for jet production as predicted by pQCD, after the dependencies of the structure functions and the running coupling constant are properly taken into account. The power indices for hadron production n are slightly greater than those for jet production.

Tsallis Fits to pT Spectra and Multiple Hard Scattering in pp Collisions at the LHC

Phenomenological Tsallis fits to the CMS, ATLAS, and ALICE transverse momentum spectra of hadrons for pp collisions at LHC were recently found to extend over a large range of the transverse momentum. We investigate whether the few degrees of freedom in the Tsallis parametrization may arise from the relativistic parton-parton hard-scattering and related processes. The effects of the multiple hard-scattering and parton showering processes on the power law are discussed. We find empirically that whereas the transverse spectra of both hadrons and jets exhibit power-law behavior of 1/pT^n at high pT, the power indices n for hadrons are systematically greater than those for jets, for which n~4-5.

Bose-Einstein Interference in the Passage of a Jet in a Dense Medium

When a jet collides coherently with many parton scatterers at very high energies, the Bose-Einstein symmetry with respect to the interchange of the virtual bosons leads to a destructive interference of the Feynman amplitudes in most regions of the momentum transfer phase space but a constructive interference in some other regions of the momentum transfer phase space. As a consequence, the recoiling scatterers have a tendency to come out collectively along the incident jet direction, each carrying a substantial fraction of the incident jet longitudinal momentum. The manifestation of the Bose-Einstein interference as collective recoils of the scatterers along the jet direction may have been observed in angular correlations of hadrons associated with a high-pT trigger in high-energy heavy-nuclei collisions at RHIC and LHC.

Magnetic States at Short Distances

The magnetic interactions between a fermion and an antifermion of opposite electric or color charges in the 1S0 and 3P0 states are very attractive and singular near the origin and may allow the formation of new bound and resonance states at short distances. In the two body Dirac equations formulated in constraint dynamics, the short-distance attraction for these states for point particles leads to a quasipotential that behaves near the origin as -α^2/r^2. Both 1S0 and 3P0 states admit two types of eigenstates with drastically different behaviors for the radial wave function u=rψ. One type of states, with u growing as r^{1+\sqrt(1-4*α^2)/2} at small r, will be called usual states. The other type of states with u growing as r^{(1-\sqrt(1-4*α^2))/2} will be called peculiar states. Both of the usual and peculiar eigenstates have admissible behaviors at short distances. The usual bound 1S0 states possess attributes the same as those one usually encounters in QED and QCD. In contrast, the peculiar bound 1S0 states, yet to be observed, have distinctly different bound state properties and scattering phase shifts. For the 3P0 states, the usual solutions lead to the standard bound state energies and no resonance, but resonances have been found for the peculiar states whose energies depend on the description of the internal structure of the charges, the mass of the constituent, and the coupling constant. The existence of both usual and peculiar eigenstates in the same system leads to the non-self-adjoint property of the mass operator and two non-orthogonal complete sets. The mass operator can be made self-adjoint with a single complete set of admissible states by introducing a new peculiarity quantum number and an enlarged Hilbert space.

Novel Bose-Einstein Interference in the Passage of a Fast Particle in a Dense Medium

The Compactification of QCD$_4$ to QCD$_2$ in a Flux Tube

We show from the action integral that in the special environment of a flux tube, QCD$_4$ in (3+1) dimensional space-time can be approximately compactified into QCD$_2$ in (1+1) dimensional space-time. In such a process, we find out how the coupling constant $g_{2D}$ in QCD$_2$ is related to the coupling constant $g_{4D}$ in QCD$_4$. We show how the quark and the gluon in QCD$_2$ acquire contributions to their masses arising from their confinement within the tube, and how all these quantities depend on the excitation of the partons in the transverse degrees of freedom. The compactification facilitates the investigation of some dynamical problems in QCD$_4$ in the simpler dynamics of QCD$_2$ where the variation of the gluon fields leads to a bound state.

Phenomenological Tsallis fits to the CMS and ATLAS transverse spectra of charged particles were found to extend for p_T from 0.5 to 181 GeV in pp collisions at LHC at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV, and for p_T from 0.5 to 31 GeV at \sqrt{s}=0.9 TeV. The simplicity of the Tsallis parametrization and the large range of the fitting transverse momentum raise questions on the physical meaning of the degrees of freedom that enter into the Tsallis distribution or q-statistics.

Momentum Kick Model Description of the Ridge in (Delta-phi)-(Delta eta) Correlation in pp Collisions at 7 TeV

The near-side ridge structure in the (Delta phi)-(Delta eta) correlation observed by the CMS Collaboration for pp collisions at 7 TeV at LHC can be explained by the momentum kick model in which the ridge particles are medium partons that suffer a collision with the jet and acquire a momentum kick along the jet direction. Similar to the early medium parton momentum distribution obtained in previous analysis for nucleus-nucleus collisions at 0.2 TeV, the early medium parton momentum distribution in pp collisions at 7 TeV exhibits a rapidity plateau as arising from particle production in a flux tube.

On the Mass Difference between pion and rho meson using a Relativistic Two-Body Model

The big mass difference between the pion and rho meson possibly originates from the spin-dependent nature of the interactions in the two states since these two states are similar except for spin. Both pi and rho are quark-antiquark systems which can be treated using the two-body Dirac equations (TBDE) of constraint dynamics. This relativistic approach for two-body system has the advantage over the non-relativistic treatment in the sense that the spin-dependent nature is automatically coming out from the formalism. We employed Dirac's relativistic constraint dynamics to describe quark-antiquark systems. Within this formalism, the 16-component Dirac equation is reduced to the 4-component 2nd-order differential equation and the radial part of this equation is simply a Schroedinger-type equation with various terms calculated from the basic radial potential. We used a modified Richardson potential for quark-antiquark systems which satisfies the conditions of confinement and asymptotic freedom. We obtained the wave functions for these two mesons which are not singular at short distances. We also found that the cancellation between the Darwin and spin-spin interaction terms occurs in the pi mass but not in the rho mass and this is the main source of the big difference in the two meson masses.

Stability of Matter-Antimatter Molecules

We examine the stability of matter-antimatter molecules by reducing the four-body problem into a simpler two-body problem with residual interactions. We find that matter-antimatter molecules with constituents (m1+, m2-, m2bar+, m1bar-) possess bound states if their constituent mass ratio m1/m2 is greater than about 4. This stability condition suggests that the binding of matter-antimatter molecules is a rather common phenomenon. We evaluate the binding energies and eigenstates of matter-antimatter molecules (mu+ e-)-(e+ mu-), (pi+ e-)-(e+ pi-), (K+ e-)-(e+ K-), (p e-)-(e+ pbar), (p mu-)-(mu+ pbar), and (K+ mu-)-(mu+ K-), which satisfy the stability condition. We estimate the molecular annihilation lifetimes in their s states.

Anomalous Soft Photons associated with Hadron Production in String Fragmentation

The bosonized QCD2+QED2 system for quarks with two flavors contains QCD2 and QED2 bound states, with an isoscalar photon at about 25 MeV and an isovector (I=1,I_3=0) photon at about 44 MeV. Consequently, when a quark and an antiquark at the two ends of a string pulls apart from each other at high energies, hadrons and soft photons will be produced simultaneously in the fragmentation of the string. The production of the QED2 soft photons in association with hadrons may explain the anomalous soft photon data in hadron-hadron collisions and e+e- annihilations at high energies.

Anomalous Soft Photons in Hadron Production

Anomalous soft photons in excess of what is expected from electromagnetic bremsstrahlung have been observed in association with the production of hadrons, mostly mesons, in high-energy (K+)p, (pi+)p, (pi-)p, pp, and (e+)(e-) collisions. We propose a model for the simultaneous production of anomalous soft photons and mesons in quantum field theory, in which the meson production arises from the oscillation of color charge densities of the quarks of the underlying vacuum in the flux tube. As a quark carries both a color charge and an electric charge, the oscillation of the color charge densities will be accompanied by the oscillation of electric charge densities, which will in turn lead to the simultaneous production of soft photons during the meson production process. How the production of these soft photons may explain the anomalous soft photon data will be discussed. Further experimental measurements to test the model will be proposed.

Foundation of Hydrodynamics for Systems with Strong Interactions

For a dense and strongly interacting system, such as a nucleus or a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, the foundation of hydrodynamics can be better found in the quantum description of constituents moving in the strong mean fields generated by all other particles. Using the result that the Schroedinger equation and the Klein-Gordon equation can be written in hydrodynamical forms, we find that the probability currents of the many-body system in the mean-field description obey a hydrodynamical equation with stress tensors arising from many contributions: quantum effects, mean-field interactions, and thermal fluctuations. The influence of various contributions to the hydrodynamical motion is expected to vary with the temperature, as the quantum and mean-field stress tensors playing more important roles at low and moderate temperatures.

Klein-Gordon Equation in Hydrodynamical Form

We follow and modify the Feshbach-Villars formalism by separating the Klein-Gordon equation into two coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations for particle and antiparticle wave function components with positive probability densities. We find that the equation of motion for the probability densities is in the form of relativistic hydrodynamics where various forces have their classical counterparts, with the additional element of the quantum stress tensor that depends on the derivatives of the amplitude of the wave function. We derive the equation of motion for the Wigner function and we find that its approximate classical weak-field limit coincides with the equation of motion for the distribution function in the collisionless kinetic theory.

The Ridge Associated with the Near-side Jet in High Energy-Heavy-Ion Collisions

The ridge particles associated with a near-side jet are identified as medium partons kicked by the jet near the surface. They carry direct information on the parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-parton collisions and the magnitude of the longitudinal momentum kick. The extracted early parton momentum distribution has a rapidity plateau structure with a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution. Such a rapidity plateau structure may arise from particle production in flux tubes, as color charges and anti-color charges separate at high energies.

The Wigner Function of Produced Particles in String Fragmentation

We show that QCD4 with transverse confinement can be approximately compactified into QCD2 with a transverse quark mass $m_{{}_T}$ that is obtained by solving a set of coupled transverse eigenvalue equations. In the limits of a strong coupling and a large number of flavors, QCD2 further admits Schwinger QED2-type bosonized solutions. We therefore examine phenomenologically the space-time dynamics of produced particles in string fragmentation by studying the Wigner function of produced bosons in Schwinger QED2, which mimics many features of string fragmentation in quantum chromodynamics. We find that particles with momenta in different regions of the rapidity plateau are produced at the initial moment of string fragmentation as a quark pulls away from an antiquark at high energies, in contrast to classical pictures of string fragmentation with longitudinal space-momentum-time ordering.

Lectures on Landau Hydrodynamics

Landau hydrodynamics is a plausible description for the evolution of the dense hot matter produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We review the formulation of Landau hydrodynamics to pave the way for its application in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. It is found that Landau's rapidity distribution needs to be modified to provide a better quantitative description. In particular, the rapidity distribution in the center-of-mass system should be more appropriately given as dN/dy \exp{\sqrt{y_b^2-y^2}}, where y_b=\ln{\sqrt{s_NN}/m_p} is the beam nucleon rapidity, instead of Landau's original result of dN/dy({Landau}) \exp{\sqrt{L^2-y^2}} where L=\ln{\sqrt{s_NN}/2m_p}. The modified distribution is compared with the Landau distribution and experimental data. It is found that the modified distribution agrees better with experimental $dN/dy$ data than the Landau distribution and it differs only slightly from the Landau Gaussian distribution dN/dy(Landau-Gaussian) \exp{-y^2/2L}. Past successes of the Gaussian distribution in explaining experimental rapidity data arises, not because it is an approximation of the original Landau distribution, but because it is in fact a close representation of the modified distribution.

Tests of Two-Body Dirac Equation Wave Functions in the Decays of Quarkonium and Positronium into Two Photons

Two-Body Dirac equations of constraint dynamics provide a covariant framework to investigate the problem of highly relativistic quarks in meson bound states. This formalism eliminates automatically the problems of relative time and energy, leading to a covariant three dimensional formalism with the same number of degrees of freedom as appears in the corresponding nonrelativistic problem. It provides bound state wave equations with the simplicity of the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation. Here we begin important tests of the relativistic sixteen component wave function solutions obtained in a recent work on meson spectroscopy, extending a method developed previously for positronium decay into two photons. Preliminary to this we examine the positronium decay in the 3P_{0,2} states as well as the 1S_0. The two-gamma quarkonium decays that we investigate are for the η_{c}, η_{c}^{\prime}, χ_{c0}, χ_{c2}, π^{0}, π_{2}, a_{2}, and f_{2}^{\prime} mesons. Our results for the four charmonium states compare well with those from other quark models and show the particular importance of including all components of the wave function as well as strong and CM energy dependent potential effects on the norm and amplitude. The results for the π^{0}, although off the experimental rate by 15%, is much closer than the usual expectations from a potential model. We conclude that the Two-Body Dirac equations lead to wave functions which provide good descriptions of the two-gamma decay amplitude and can be used with some confidence for other purposes.

Quantum Treatment of the Multiple Scattering and Collective Flow in Intensity Interferometry

We apply the path-integral method to study the multiple scattering and collective flow in intensity interferometry in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We show that the Glauber model and eikonal approximation in an earlier quantum treatment are special examples of the more general path-integral method. The multiple scattering and collective flow lead essentially to an initial source at a shifted momentum, with a multiple collision absorption factor that depends on the pion absorption cross section and a phase factor that depends on the deviations of the in-medium particle momenta from their asymptotic values.

Signature of Granular Structures by Single-Event Intensity Interferometry

The observation of a granular structure in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be used as a signature for the quark-gluon plasma phase transition, if the phase transition is first order in nature. We propose methods to detect a granular structure by the single-event intensity interferometry. We find that the correlation function from a chaotic source of granular droplets exhibits large fluctuations, with maxima and minima at relative momenta which depend on the relative coordinates of the droplet centers. The presence of this type of maxima and minima of a single-event correlation function at many relative momenta is a signature for a granular structure and a first-order QCD phase transition. We further observe that the Fourier transform of the correlation function of a granular structure exhibits maxima at the relative spatial coordinates of the droplet centers, which can provide another signature of the granular structure.

The Role of Produced Hadrons in J/psi Suppression

Hadrons produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can suppress the production of J/psi and other charmonium states by charmonium spontaneous dissociation as the hot hadronic environment alters the interaction between the charm quark and charm antiquark. Furthermore, hadrons can thermalize a charmonium to excite it to higher charmonium states which subsequently dissociate spontaneously. They can also collide with a charmonium to lead to its prompt dissociation into an open charm pair.

Heavy Quarkonium Dissociation Cross Sections in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

Many of the hadron-hadron cross sections required for the study of the dynamics of matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can be calculated using the quark-interchange model. Here we evaluate the low-energy dissociation cross sections of $J/ψ$, $ψ'$, $χ$, $Υ$, and $Υ'$ in collision with $π$, $ρ$, and $K$, which are important for the interpretation of heavy-quarkonium suppression as a signature for the quark gluon plasma. These comover dissociation processes also contribute to heavy-quarkonium suppression, and must be understood and incorporated in simulations of heavy-ion collisions before QGP formation can be established through this signature.

Cross Sections for pi- and rho-induced Dissociation of J/psi and psi'

We evaluate the cross sections for the dissociation of $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ by $π$ and $ρ$ at low collision energies, using the quark-interchange model of Barnes and Swanson. The dissociation cross section for $J/ψ$ by $π$ is found to be relatively small with a maximum of about 1 mb and a kinetic energy threshold of 0.65 GeV. The pion-induced $ψ'$ dissociation cross section is found to be much larger, with a maximum of about 5 mb and a lower threshold. Dissociation cross sections for $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ by $ρ$ mesons are also evaluated and are found to be large near threshold.

Signatures of Quark-Gluon Plasma Phase Transition in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

In high-energy nuclear collisions, the new phase of the quark-gluon plasma is indicated by an anomalous increase in pressure, an excess of direct photon production, an excess of strangeness production, and an anomalous J/psi suppression. We review these signatures and discuss how recent high-energy heavy-ion experiments at CERN are consistent with the production of the quark-gluon plasma in high-energy Pb+Pb collisions.

Color-Octet Fraction in J/Psi Production and Absorption

The cross section between a $c \bar c$ pair and a nucleon is small and sensitive to the $c - \bar c$ separation if the pair is in a color-singlet state, but very large and insensitive to the separation if it is in a color-octet state. We use this property in an absorption model involving both color components to deduce the color structure of $c \bar c$ pairs produced in $p(B)A \to ψX$ reactions. Our analysis shows that the NA3, NA38 and E772 data are not inconsistent with the theoretical picture that color-octet and color-singlet precursors are produced in roughly equal proportions if the produced color-singlet precursors are pointlike and transparent. However, if the color-singlet precursors are not transparent but have a cross section of a few mb, these data do show a definite preference for a larger fraction of color-singlet precursors. In either case, the color-octet fraction increases with $x_F$, approaching unity as $x_F$ becomes large.

Heavy Quarkonium Production and Propagation in Nuclei

We describe a precursor in heavy quarkonium production in terms of a coherent admixture of states of different color, spin, and angular momentum quantum numbers, and obtain the production amplitudes for different quarkonium bound states by projecting out this precursor state onto these bound states. The precursor is absorbed in its passage through a nucleus in a pA reaction, and the total cross section between this precursor with a nucleon can be calculated with the two-gluon model of the Pomeron. Such a description of coherent precursors and their subsequent interactions with nucleons can explain many salient features of J/psi and psi' production in pA collisions.

Effects of Final-State Interaction and Screening on Strange- and Heavy-Quark Production

Final-state interaction and screening have a great influence on $q \bar q$ production cross sections, which are important quantities in many problems in quark-gluon plasma physics. They lead to an enhancement of the cross section for a $q \bar q$ color-singlet state and a suppression for a color-octet state. The effects are large near the production threshold. The presence of screening gives rise to resonances for $q\bar q$ production just above the threshold at specific plasma temperatures. These resonances, especially $c\bar c$ and $b \bar b$ resonances, may be utilized to search for the quark-gluon plasma by studying the temperature dependence of heavy-quark pair production just above the threshold.

Effects of Screening on Quark-Antiquark Cross Sections in Quark-Gluon Plasma

Lowest-order cross sections for $q\bar q$ production and annihilation can be approximately corrected for higher-order QCD effects by using a corrective $K$-factor. For energies where quark masses cannot be ignored, the $K$-factor is dominated by the wave function distortion arising from the initial- or final-state interaction between the quark and the antiquark. We evaluate this $K$-factor for $q \bar q$ production and annihilation in a quark-gluon plasma by taking into account the effects of Debye screening through a color-Yukawa potential. We present the corrective $K$-factor as a function of dimensionless parameters which may find applications in other systems involving attractive or repulsive Yukawa interactions. Prominent peaks of the $K$-factor occur for an attractive $q$-$\bar q$ color-Yukawa interaction with Debye screening lengths of 0.835 and 3.23 times the Bohr radius, corresponding to two lowest $s$-wave $q\bar q$ bound states moving into the continuum to become $q\bar q$ resonances as the Debye screening length decreases. These resonances, especially the $c\bar c$ and the $b \bar b$ resonances, may be utilized to search for the quark-gluon plasma by studying the systematics of the temperature dependence of heavy-quark pair production just above the threshold.

Excess Dileptons in High-Energy Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

It has been observed recently that while continuum dilepton production and open charm production in high-energy $pA$ collisions can be described in terms of the superposition of $pp$ collisions, dilepton yields in S+U collisions are in excess of similar extrapolations. This feature can be explained as arising from the interaction of gluons produced in different soft baryon-baryon collisions, leading to additional open-charm pairs in nucleus-nucleus collisions but not in $pA$ collisions.
