Chronicles-OCR: A Cross-Temporal Perception Benchmark for the Evolutionary Trajectory of Chinese Characters

Vision Large Language Models (VLLMs) have achieved remarkable success in modern text-rich visual understanding. However, their perceptual robustness in the face of the continuous morphological evolution of historical writing systems remains largely unexplored. Existing ancient text datasets typically focus on isolated historical periods, failing to capture the systematic visual distribution shifts spanning thousands of years. To bridge this gap and empower Digital Humanities, we introduce Chronicles-OCR, the first comprehensive benchmark specifically designed to evaluate the cross-temporal visual perception capabilities of VLLMs across the complete evolutionary trajectory of Chinese characters, known as the Seven Chinese Scripts. Curated in collaboration with top-tier institutional domain experts, the dataset comprises 2,800 strictly balanced images encompassing highly diverse physical media, ranging from tortoise shells to paper-based calligraphy. To accommodate the drastic morphological and topological variations across different historical stages, we propose a novel Stage-Adaptive Annotation Paradigm. Based on this, Chronicles-OCR formulates four rigorous quantitative tasks: cross-period character spotting, fine-grained archaic character recognition via visual referring, ancient text parsing, and script classification. By isolating visual perception from semantic reasoning, Chronicles-OCR provides an authoritative platform to expose the limitations of current VLLMs, paving the way for robust, evolution-aware historical text perception. Safe, or Simply Incapable? Rethinking Safety Evaluation for Phone-Use Agents

When a phone-use agent avoids harm, does that show safety, or simply inability to act? Existing evaluations often cannot tell. A harmful outcome may be avoided because the agent recognized the risk and chose the safe action, or because it failed to understand the screen or execute any relevant action at all. These cases have different causes and call for different fixes, yet current benchmarks often merge them under task success, refusal, or final harmful outcome. We address this problem with PhoneSafety, a benchmark of 700 safety-critical moments drawn from real phone interactions across more than 130 apps. Each instance isolates the next decision at a risky moment and asks a simple question: does the model take the safe action, take the unsafe action, or fail to do anything useful? We evaluate eight representative phone-use agents under this framework. Our results reveal two main patterns. First, stronger general phone-use ability does not reliably imply safer choices at risky moments. Models that perform better on ordinary app tasks are not always the ones that behave more safely when the next action matters. Second, failures to do anything useful behave like a capability signal rather than a safety signal: they are concentrated in more visually and operationally demanding settings and remain stable when the evaluation protocol changes. Across models, failures split into two recurring patterns: unsafe choices in settings where the model can act but chooses wrongly, and inability to act in more visually and operationally demanding screens. Overall, a harmless outcome is not enough to count as evidence of safety. Evaluating phone-use agents requires separating unsafe judgment from inability to act.

Uni-OPD: Unifying On-Policy Distillation with a Dual-Perspective Recipe

On-policy distillation (OPD) has recently emerged as an effective post-training paradigm for consolidating the capabilities of specialized expert models into a single student model. Despite its empirical success, the conditions under which OPD yields reliable improvement remain poorly understood. In this work, we identify two fundamental bottlenecks that limit effective OPD: insufficient exploration of informative states and unreliable teacher supervision for student rollouts. Building on this insight, we propose Uni-OPD, a unified OPD framework that generalizes across Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), centered on a dual-perspective optimization strategy. Specifically, from the student's perspective, we adopt two data balancing strategies to promote exploration of informative student-generated states during training. From the teacher's perspective, we show that reliable supervision hinges on whether aggregated token-level guidance remains order-consistent with the outcome reward. To this end, we develop an outcome-guided margin calibration mechanism to restore order consistency between correct and incorrect trajectories. We conduct extensive experiments on 5 domains and 16 benchmarks covering diverse settings, including single-teacher and multi-teacher distillation across LLMs and MLLMs, strong-to-weak distillation, and cross-modal distillation. Our results verify the effectiveness and versatility of Uni-OPD and provide practical insights into reliable OPD.

TRUST: An Accurate and End-to-End Table structure Recognizer Using Splitting-based Transformers

Table structure recognition is a crucial part of document image analysis domain. Its difficulty lies in the need to parse the physical coordinates and logical indices of each cell at the same time. However, the existing methods are difficult to achieve both these goals, especially when the table splitting lines are blurred or tilted. In this paper, we propose an accurate and end-to-end transformer-based table structure recognition method, referred to as TRUST. Transformers are suitable for table structure recognition because of their global computations, perfect memory, and parallel computation. By introducing novel Transformer-based Query-based Splitting Module and Vertex-based Merging Module, the table structure recognition problem is decoupled into two joint optimization sub-tasks: multi-oriented table row/column splitting and table grid merging. The Query-based Splitting Module learns strong context information from long dependencies via Transformer networks, accurately predicts the multi-oriented table row/column separators, and obtains the basic grids of the table accordingly. The Vertex-based Merging Module is capable of aggregating local contextual information between adjacent basic grids, providing the ability to merge basic girds that belong to the same spanning cell accurately. We conduct experiments on several popular benchmarks including PubTabNet and SynthTable, our method achieves new state-of-the-art results. In particular, TRUST runs at 10 FPS on PubTabNet, surpassing the previous methods by a large margin.

Learning Global Structure Consistency for Robust Object Tracking

Fast appearance variations and the distractions of similar objects are two of the most challenging problems in visual object tracking. Unlike many existing trackers that focus on modeling only the target, in this work, we consider the \emph{transient variations of the whole scene}. The key insight is that the object correspondence and spatial layout of the whole scene are consistent (i.e., global structure consistency) in consecutive frames which helps to disambiguate the target from distractors. Moreover, modeling transient variations enables to localize the target under fast variations. Specifically, we propose an effective and efficient short-term model that learns to exploit the global structure consistency in a short time and thus can handle fast variations and distractors. Since short-term modeling falls short of handling occlusion and out of the views, we adopt the long-short term paradigm and use a long-term model that corrects the short-term model when it drifts away from the target or the target is not present. These two components are carefully combined to achieve the balance of stability and plasticity during tracking. We empirically verify that the proposed tracker can tackle the two challenging scenarios and validate it on large scale benchmarks. Remarkably, our tracker improves state-of-the-art-performance on VOT2018 from 0.440 to 0.460, GOT-10k from 0.611 to 0.640, and NFS from 0.619 to 0.629.

Towards Accurate Scene Text Recognition with Semantic Reasoning Networks

Scene text image contains two levels of contents: visual texture and semantic information. Although the previous scene text recognition methods have made great progress over the past few years, the research on mining semantic information to assist text recognition attracts less attention, only RNN-like structures are explored to implicitly model semantic information. However, we observe that RNN based methods have some obvious shortcomings, such as time-dependent decoding manner and one-way serial transmission of semantic context, which greatly limit the help of semantic information and the computation efficiency. To mitigate these limitations, we propose a novel end-to-end trainable framework named semantic reasoning network (SRN) for accurate scene text recognition, where a global semantic reasoning module (GSRM) is introduced to capture global semantic context through multi-way parallel transmission. The state-of-the-art results on 7 public benchmarks, including regular text, irregular text and non-Latin long text, verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. In addition, the speed of SRN has significant advantages over the RNN based methods, demonstrating its value in practical use.
