Controlling Decision Drift in Multimodal Sentiment Analysis with Missing Modalities

Multimodal sentiment analysis relies on textual, acoustic, and visual signals, yet real-world data often suffer from modality missing and quality imbalance. Existing methods generate features for modality missing from available ones, but differences in expression mechanisms and sentiment dynamics across modalities may cause the generated features to deviate from true distributions and mislead prediction. In addition, unreliable modalities may dominate fusion, resulting in representation shift across modality combinations and unstable sentiment representations. To address these challenges, we propose a two-level reference alignment framework. The framework introduces stable references at the feature representation and sentiment decision levels to improve robustness under modality missing. First-level reference alignment leverages complete-modality samples to constrain representations and align different modality combinations into a shared sentiment space. Second-level reference alignment enforces cross-modal consistency at the decision level by suppressing unreliable modalities through prototype retrieval and voting. As a result, the framework maintains stable and reliable sentiment predictions under diverse missing-modality patterns. Experiments on CMU-MOSI and CMU-MOSEI show consistent improvements across various missing-modality settings. Under full-modality input, the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance, with ACC of 86.28% and 85.88%, and F1 of 86.24% and 85.86%.

EditEmoTalk: Controllable Speech-Driven 3D Facial Animation with Continuous Expression Editing

Speech-driven 3D facial animation aims to generate realistic and expressive facial motions directly from audio. While recent methods achieve high-quality lip synchronization, they often rely on discrete emotion categories, limiting continuous and fine-grained emotional control. We present EditEmoTalk, a controllable speech-driven 3D facial animation framework with continuous emotion editing. The key idea is a boundary-aware semantic embedding that learns the normal directions of inter-emotion decision boundaries, enabling a continuous expression manifold for smooth emotion manipulation. Moreover, we introduce an emotional consistency loss that enforces semantic alignment between the generated motion dynamics and the target emotion embedding through a mapping network, ensuring faithful emotional expression. Extensive experiments demonstrate that EditEmoTalk achieves superior controllability, expressiveness, and generalization while maintaining accurate lip synchronization. Code and pretrained models will be released.

GenCAMO: Scene-Graph Contextual Decoupling for Environment-aware and Mask-free Camouflage Image-Dense Annotation Generation

Conceal dense prediction (CDP), especially RGB-D camouflage object detection and open-vocabulary camouflage object segmentation, plays a crucial role in advancing the understanding and reasoning of complex camouflage scenes. However, high-quality and large-scale camouflage datasets with dense annotation remain scarce due to expensive data collection and labeling costs. To address this challenge, we explore leveraging generative models to synthesize realistic camouflage image-dense data for training CDP models with fine-grained representations, prior knowledge, and auxiliary reasoning. Concretely, our contributions are threefold: (i) we introduce GenCAMO-DB, a large-scale camouflage dataset with multi-modal annotations, including depth maps, scene graphs, attribute descriptions, and text prompts; (ii) we present GenCAMO, an environment-aware and mask-free generative framework that produces high-fidelity camouflage image-dense annotations; (iii) extensive experiments across multiple modalities demonstrate that GenCAMO significantly improves dense prediction performance on complex camouflage scenes by providing high-quality synthetic data. A Comprehensive Survey on Video Saliency Detection with Auditory Information: the Audio-visual Consistency Perceptual is the Key!

Video saliency detection (VSD) aims at fast locating the most attractive objects/things/patterns in a given video clip. Existing VSD-related works have mainly relied on the visual system but paid less attention to the audio aspect, while, actually, our audio system is the most vital complementary part to our visual system. Also, audio-visual saliency detection (AVSD), one of the most representative research topics for mimicking human perceptual mechanisms, is currently in its infancy, and none of the existing survey papers have touched on it, especially from the perspective of saliency detection. Thus, the ultimate goal of this paper is to provide an extensive review to bridge the gap between audio-visual fusion and saliency detection. In addition, as another highlight of this review, we have provided a deep insight into key factors which could directly determine the performances of AVSD deep models, and we claim that the audio-visual consistency degree (AVC) -- a long-overlooked issue, can directly influence the effectiveness of using audio to benefit its visual counterpart when performing saliency detection. Moreover, in order to make the AVC issue more practical and valuable for future followers, we have newly equipped almost all existing publicly available AVSD datasets with additional frame-wise AVC labels. Based on these upgraded datasets, we have conducted extensive quantitative evaluations to ground our claim on the importance of AVC in the AVSD task. In a word, both our ideas and new sets serve as a convenient platform with preliminaries and guidelines, all of which are very potential to facilitate future works in promoting state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance further.

A Novel Long-term Iterative Mining Scheme for Video Salient Object Detection

The existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) video salient object detection (VSOD) models have widely followed short-term methodology, which dynamically determines the balance between spatial and temporal saliency fusion by solely considering the current consecutive limited frames. However, the short-term methodology has one critical limitation, which conflicts with the real mechanism of our visual system -- a typical long-term methodology. As a result, failure cases keep showing up in the results of the current SOTA models, and the short-term methodology becomes the major technical bottleneck. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel VSOD approach, which performs VSOD in a complete long-term way. Our approach converts the sequential VSOD, a sequential task, to a data mining problem, i.e., decomposing the input video sequence to object proposals in advance and then mining salient object proposals as much as possible in an easy-to-hard way. Since all object proposals are simultaneously available, the proposed approach is a complete long-term approach, which can alleviate some difficulties rooted in conventional short-term approaches. In addition, we devised an online updating scheme that can grasp the most representative and trustworthy pattern profile of the salient objects, outputting framewise saliency maps with rich details and smoothing both spatially and temporally. The proposed approach outperforms almost all SOTA models on five widely used benchmark datasets.

Log-based Sparse Nonnegative Matrix Factorization for Data Representation

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has been widely studied in recent years due to its effectiveness in representing nonnegative data with parts-based representations. For NMF, a sparser solution implies better parts-based representation.However, current NMF methods do not always generate sparse solutions.In this paper, we propose a new NMF method with log-norm imposed on the factor matrices to enhance the sparseness.Moreover, we propose a novel column-wisely sparse norm, named $\ell_{2,\log}$-(pseudo) norm to enhance the robustness of the proposed method.The $\ell_{2,\log}$-(pseudo) norm is invariant, continuous, and differentiable.For the $\ell_{2,\log}$ regularized shrinkage problem, we derive a closed-form solution, which can be used for other general problems.Efficient multiplicative updating rules are developed for the optimization, which theoretically guarantees the convergence of the objective value sequence.Extensive experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, as well as the enhanced sparseness and robustness.

Weakly Supervised Visual-Auditory Fixation Prediction with Multigranularity Perception

Thanks to the rapid advances in deep learning techniques and the wide availability of large-scale training sets, the performance of video saliency detection models has been improving steadily and significantly. However, deep learning-based visualaudio fixation prediction is still in its infancy. At present, only a few visual-audio sequences have been furnished, with real fixations being recorded in real visual-audio environments. Hence, it would be neither efficient nor necessary to recollect real fixations under the same visual-audio circumstances. To address this problem, this paper promotes a novel approach in a weakly supervised manner to alleviate the demand of large-scale training sets for visual-audio model training. By using only the video category tags, we propose the selective class activation mapping (SCAM) and its upgrade (SCAM+). In the spatial-temporal-audio circumstance, the former follows a coarse-to-fine strategy to select the most discriminative regions, and these regions are usually capable of exhibiting high consistency with the real human-eye fixations. The latter equips the SCAM with an additional multi-granularity perception mechanism, making the whole process more consistent with that of the real human visual system. Moreover, we distill knowledge from these regions to obtain complete new spatial-temporal-audio (STA) fixation prediction (FP) networks, enabling broad applications in cases where video tags are not available. Without resorting to any real human-eye fixation, the performances of these STA FP networks are comparable to those of fully supervised networks. A Deeper Look at Salient Object Detection: Bi-stream Network with a Small Training Dataset

Compared with the conventional hand-crafted approaches, the deep learning based methods have achieved tremendous performance improvements by training exquisitely crafted fancy networks over large-scale training sets. However, do we really need large-scale training set for salient object detection (SOD)? In this paper, we provide a deeper insight into the interrelationship between the SOD performances and the training sets. To alleviate the conventional demands for large-scale training data, we provide a feasible way to construct a novel small-scale training set, which only contains 4K images. Moreover, we propose a novel bi-stream network to take full advantage of our proposed small training set, which is consisted of two feature backbones with different structures, achieving complementary semantical saliency fusion via the proposed gate control unit. To our best knowledge, this is the first attempt to use a small-scale training set to outperform state-of-the-art models which are trained on large-scale training sets; nevertheless, our method can still achieve the leading state-of-the-art performance on five benchmark datasets.

A Novel Video Salient Object Detection Method via Semi-supervised Motion Quality Perception

Previous video salient object detection (VSOD) approaches have mainly focused on designing fancy networks to achieve their performance improvements. However, with the slow-down in development of deep learning techniques recently, it may become more and more difficult to anticipate another breakthrough via fancy networks solely. To this end, this paper proposes a universal learning scheme to get a further 3\% performance improvement for all state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. The major highlight of our method is that we resort the "motion quality"---a brand new concept, to select a sub-group of video frames from the original testing set to construct a new training set. The selected frames in this new training set should all contain high-quality motions, in which the salient objects will have large probability to be successfully detected by the "target SOTA method"---the one we want to improve. Consequently, we can achieve a significant performance improvement by using this new training set to start a new round of network training. During this new round training, the VSOD results of the target SOTA method will be applied as the pseudo training objectives. Our novel learning scheme is simple yet effective, and its semi-supervised methodology may have large potential to inspire the VSOD community in the future.

A Plug-and-play Scheme to Adapt Image Saliency Deep Model for Video Data

With the rapid development of deep learning techniques, image saliency deep models trained solely by spatial information have occasionally achieved detection performance for video data comparable to that of the models trained by both spatial and temporal information. However, due to the lesser consideration of temporal information, the image saliency deep models may become fragile in the video sequences dominated by temporal information. Thus, the most recent video saliency detection approaches have adopted the network architecture starting with a spatial deep model that is followed by an elaborately designed temporal deep model. However, such methods easily encounter the performance bottleneck arising from the single stream learning methodology, so the overall detection performance is largely determined by the spatial deep model. In sharp contrast to the current mainstream methods, this paper proposes a novel plug-and-play scheme to weakly retrain a pretrained image saliency deep model for video data by using the newly sensed and coded temporal information. Thus, the retrained image saliency deep model will be able to maintain temporal saliency awareness, achieving much improved detection performance. Moreover, our method is simple yet effective for adapting any off-the-shelf pre-trained image saliency deep model to obtain high-quality video saliency detection. Additionally, both the data and source code of our method are publicly available.

Depth Quality Aware Salient Object Detection

The existing fusion based RGB-D salient object detection methods usually adopt the bi-stream structure to strike the fusion trade-off between RGB and depth (D). The D quality usually varies from scene to scene, while the SOTA bi-stream approaches are depth quality unaware, which easily result in substantial difficulties in achieving complementary fusion status between RGB and D, leading to poor fusion results in facing of low-quality D. Thus, this paper attempts to integrate a novel depth quality aware subnet into the classic bi-stream structure, aiming to assess the depth quality before conducting the selective RGB-D fusion. Compared with the SOTA bi-stream methods, the major highlight of our method is its ability to lessen the importance of those low-quality, no-contribution, or even negative-contribution D regions during the RGB-D fusion, achieving a much improved complementary status between RGB and D.

Full Reference Screen Content Image Quality Assessment by Fusing Multi-level Structure Similarity

The screen content images (SCIs) usually comprise various content types with sharp edges, in which the artifacts or distortions can be well sensed by the vanilla structure similarity measurement in a full reference manner. Nonetheless, almost all of the current SOTA structure similarity metrics are "locally" formulated in a single-level manner, while the true human visual system (HVS) follows the multi-level manner, and such mismatch could eventually prevent these metrics from achieving trustworthy quality assessment. To ameliorate, this paper advocates a novel solution to measure structure similarity "globally" from the perspective of sparse representation. To perform multi-level quality assessment in accordance with the real HVS, the above-mentioned global metric will be integrated with the conventional local ones by resorting to the newly devised selective deep fusion network. To validate its efficacy and effectiveness, we have compared our method with 12 SOTA methods over two widely-used large-scale public SCI datasets, and the quantitative results indicate that our method yields significantly higher consistency with subjective quality score than the currently leading works. Both the source code and data are also publicly available to gain widespread acceptance and facilitate new advancement and its validation.

Knowing Depth Quality In Advance: A Depth Quality Assessment Method For RGB-D Salient Object Detection

Previous RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) methods have widely adopted deep learning tools to automatically strike a trade-off between RGB and D (depth), whose key rationale is to take full advantage of their complementary nature, aiming for a much-improved SOD performance than that of using either of them solely. However, such fully automatic fusions may not always be helpful for the SOD task because the D quality itself usually varies from scene to scene. It may easily lead to a suboptimal fusion result if the D quality is not considered beforehand. Moreover, as an objective factor, the D quality has long been overlooked by previous work. As a result, it is becoming a clear performance bottleneck. Thus, we propose a simple yet effective scheme to measure D quality in advance, the key idea of which is to devise a series of features in accordance with the common attributes of high-quality D regions. To be more concrete, we conduct D quality assessments for each image region, following a multi-scale methodology that includes low-level edge consistency, mid-level regional uncertainty and high-level model variance. All these components will be computed independently and then be assembled with RGB and D features, applied as implicit indicators, to guide the selective fusion. Compared with the state-of-the-art fusion schemes, our method can achieve a more reasonable fusion status between RGB and D. Specifically, the proposed D quality measurement method achieves steady performance improvements for almost 2.0\% in general.

Recursive Multi-model Complementary Deep Fusion forRobust Salient Object Detection via Parallel Sub Networks

Fully convolutional networks have shown outstanding performance in the salient object detection (SOD) field. The state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods have a tendency to become deeper and more complex, which easily homogenize their learned deep features, resulting in a clear performance bottleneck. In sharp contrast to the conventional ``deeper'' schemes, this paper proposes a ``wider'' network architecture which consists of parallel sub networks with totally different network architectures. In this way, those deep features obtained via these two sub networks will exhibit large diversity, which will have large potential to be able to complement with each other. However, a large diversity may easily lead to the feature conflictions, thus we use the dense short-connections to enable a recursively interaction between the parallel sub networks, pursuing an optimal complementary status between multi-model deep features. Finally, all these complementary multi-model deep features will be selectively fused to make high-performance salient object detections. Extensive experiments on several famous benchmarks clearly demonstrate the superior performance, good generalization, and powerful learning ability of the proposed wider framework.

Rethinking of the Image Salient Object Detection: Object-level Semantic Saliency Re-ranking First, Pixel-wise Saliency Refinement Latter

The real human attention is an interactive activity between our visual system and our brain, using both low-level visual stimulus and high-level semantic information. Previous image salient object detection (SOD) works conduct their saliency predictions in a multi-task manner, i.e., performing pixel-wise saliency regression and segmentation-like saliency refinement at the same time, which degenerates their feature backbones in revealing semantic information. However, given an image, we tend to pay more attention to those regions which are semantically salient even in the case that these regions are perceptually not the most salient ones at first glance. In this paper, we divide the SOD problem into two sequential tasks: 1) we propose a lightweight, weakly supervised deep network to coarsely locate those semantically salient regions first; 2) then, as a post-processing procedure, we selectively fuse multiple off-the-shelf deep models on these semantically salient regions as the pixel-wise saliency refinement. In sharp contrast to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods that focus on learning pixel-wise saliency in "single image" using perceptual clues mainly, our method has investigated the "object-level semantic ranks between multiple images", of which the methodology is more consistent with the real human attention mechanism. Our method is simple yet effective, which is the first attempt to consider the salient object detection mainly as an object-level semantic re-ranking problem.

Two-Dimensional Semi-Nonnegative Matrix Factorization for Clustering

In this paper, we propose a new Semi-Nonnegative Matrix Factorization method for 2-dimensional (2D) data, named TS-NMF. It overcomes the drawback of existing methods that seriously damage the spatial information of the data by converting 2D data to vectors in a preprocessing step. In particular, projection matrices are sought under the guidance of building new data representations, such that the spatial information is retained and projections are enhanced by the goal of clustering, which helps construct optimal projection directions. Moreover, to exploit nonlinear structures of the data, manifold is constructed in the projected subspace, which is adaptively updated according to the projections and less afflicted with noise and outliers of the data and thus more representative in the projected space. Hence, seeking projections, building new data representations, and learning manifold are seamlessly integrated in a single model, which mutually enhance other and lead to a powerful data representation. Comprehensive experimental results verify the effectiveness of TS-NMF in comparison with several state-of-the-art algorithms, which suggests high potential of the proposed method for real world applications.
