DHash: Enabling Dynamic and Efficient Hash Tables

Given a specified average load factor, hash tables offer the appeal of constant time lookup operations. However, hash tables could face severe hash collisions because of malicious attacks, buggy applications, or even bursts of incoming data, compromising this practical advantage. In this paper, we present DHash, a hash table that overcomes this challenge by allowing programmers to dynamically change its hash function on the fly, without affecting other concurrent operations such as lookup, insert, and delete. DHash is modular and allows programmers to select a variety of lock-free/wait-free set algorithms as the implementation of hash table buckets. With this flexibility, they can make trade-offs between the algorithm's progress guarantee, performance, and engineering efforts, and create DHash implementations that meet their requirements best. Evaluations on three types of architectures show that DHash noticeably outperforms other practical alternatives under heavy workloads. With a load factor of 20, DHash outperforms the other three most widely used hash tables by factors of 1.4-2.0, and when the load factor increases to 200, DHash is 2.3-6.2 times faster.

Estimation of Passenger Route Choice Pattern Using Smart Card Data for Complex Metro Systems

Nowadays, metro systems play an important role in meeting the urban transportation demand in large cities. The understanding of passenger route choice is critical for public transit management. The wide deployment of Automated Fare Collection(AFC) systems opens up a new opportunity. However, only each trip's tap-in and tap-out timestamp and stations can be directly obtained from AFC system records; the train and route chosen by a passenger are unknown, which are necessary to solve our problem. While existing methods work well in some specific situations, they don't work for complicated situations. In this paper, we propose a solution that needs no additional equipment or human involvement than the AFC systems. We develop a probabilistic model that can estimate from empirical analysis how the passenger flows are dispatched to different routes and trains. We validate our approach using a large scale data set collected from the Shenzhen metro system. The measured results provide us with useful inputs when building the passenger path choice model.

OpenFunction: Data Plane Abstraction for Software-Defined Middleboxes

The state-of-the-art OpenFlow technology only partially realized SDN vision of abstraction and centralization for packet forwarding in switches. OpenFlow/P4 falls short in implementing middlebox functionalities due to the fundamental limitation in its match-action abstraction. In this paper, we advocate the vision of Software-Defined Middleboxes (SDM) to realize abstraction and centralization for middleboxes. We further propose OpenFunction, an SDM reference architecture and a network function abstraction layer. Our SDM architecture and OpenFunction abstraction are complementary to existing SDN and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies. SDM complements SDN as SDM realizes abstraction and centralization for middleboxes, whereas SDN realizes those for switches. OpenFunction complements OpenFlow as OpenFunction addresses network functions whereas OpenFlow addresses packet forwarding. SDM also complements NFV in that SDM gives NFV the ability to use heterogenous hardware platforms with various hardware acceleration technologies.
