Smallest scale clumpy star formation in Stephan's Quintet revealed from UV and IR imaging

The spatial distribution and physical sizes of star forming clumps at the smallest scales provide valuable information on hierarchical star formation (SF). In this context, we report the sites of ongoing SF at ~120 pc along the interacting galaxies in Stephan's Quintet (SQ) compact group using AstroSat-UVIT and JWST data. Since ultraviolet radiation is a direct tracer of recent SF, we identified star forming clumps in this compact group from the FUV imaging which we used to guide us to detect star forming regions on JWST IR images. The FUV imaging reveals star forming regions within which we detect smaller clumps from the higher spatial resolution images of JWST, likely produced by PAH molecules and dust ionised by FUV emission from young massive stars. This analysis reveals the importance of FUV imaging data in identifying star forming regions in the highest spatial resolution IR imaging available.

UVIT view of Centaurus A; a detailed study on positive AGN feedback

$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$ Supermassive black holes at the centre of active galactic nuclei (AGN) produce relativistic jets that can affect the star formation characteristics of the AGN hosts. Observations in the ultraviolet (UV) band can provide an excellent view of the effect of AGN jets on star formation. Here, we present a census of star formation properties in the Northern Star-forming Region (NSR) that spans about 20 kpc of the large radio source Centaurus A hosted by the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. In this region, we identified 352 UV sources associated with Cen A using new observations at an angular resolution of $<$1.5 arcseconds observed with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. These observations were carried out in one far-ultraviolet (FUV; $λ_{\text{mean}}$ = 1481 $Å$) and three near-ultraviolet (NUV; with $λ_{\text{mean}}$ of 2196 $Å$, 2447 $Å$, and 2792 $Å$, respectively) bands. The star-forming sources identified in UV tend to lie in the direction of the jet of Cen A, thereby suggesting jet triggering of star formation. Separating the NSR into Outer and Inner regions, we found the stars in the Inner region to have a relatively younger age than the Outer region, suggesting that the two regions may have different star formation histories. We also provide the UVIT source catalogue in the NSR.

Dermo-DOCTOR: A framework for concurrent skin lesion detection and recognition using a deep convolutional neural network with end-to-end dual encoders

Automated skin lesion analysis for simultaneous detection and recognition is still challenging for inter-class homogeneity and intra-class heterogeneity, leading to low generic capability of a Single Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with limited datasets. This article proposes an end-to-end deep CNN-based framework for simultaneous detection and recognition of the skin lesions, named Dermo-DOCTOR, consisting of two encoders. The feature maps from two encoders are fused channel-wise, called Fused Feature Map (FFM). The FFM is utilized for decoding in the detection sub-network, concatenating each stage of two encoders' outputs with corresponding decoder layers to retrieve the lost spatial information due to pooling in the encoders. For the recognition sub-network, the outputs of three fully connected layers, utilizing feature maps of two encoders and FFM, are aggregated to obtain a final lesion class. We train and evaluate the proposed Dermo-Doctor utilizing two publicly available benchmark datasets, such as ISIC-2016 and ISIC-2017. The achieved segmentation results exhibit mean intersection over unions of 85.0 % and 80.0 % respectively for ISIC-2016 and ISIC-2017 test datasets. The proposed Dermo-DOCTOR also demonstrates praiseworthy success in lesion recognition, providing the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.98 and 0.91 respectively for those two datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed Dermo-DOCTOR outperforms the alternative methods mentioned in the literature, designed for skin lesion detection and recognition. As the Dermo-DOCTOR provides better-results on two different test datasets, even with limited training data, it can be an auspicious computer-aided assistive tool for dermatologists.

UVIT view of dwarf irregular galaxy IC 2574 : Is the star formation triggered due to expanding H$~$I shells?

Star forming dwarf galaxies in the local volume are diverse and are ideal test beds to understand details of star formation in a variety of environments. Here, we present a deep FUV imaging study of a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy IC 2574 using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We identified 419 FUV bright regions with radii between 15 - 285 pc in the galaxy and found that 28.6\% of them to be located in H~I shells, 12.6\% inside holes and 60.1\% to be away from the holes. The H~I column density is found to be more than $10^{21} cm^{-2}$ for 82.3\% of the identified regions. 30 out of the 48 H~I holes show triggered star formation in their shells while 16 holes do not show any related FUV emission. Cross-matching with H$α$ emission, we found that 23 holes have both FUV and H$α$ emission in their shells signifying very recent trigger. Therefore, star formation in the galaxy has been partly triggered due to the expanding H~I holes whereas in majority of the sites it is driven by other mechanisms. Irrespective of the location, larger star forming complexes were found to have multiple sub-structures. We report two resolved components for the remnant cluster of the super giant shell and estimated their masses. The star formation rate of IC 2574 is found to be 0.57 $M_{\odot}$/yr, which is slightly higher compared to the average value of other nearby dwarf irregular galaxies.

In-orbit Performance of UVIT on ASTROSAT

We present the in-orbit performance and the first results from the ultra-violet Imaging telescope (UVIT) on ASTROSAT. UVIT consists of two identical 38cm coaligned telescopes, one for the FUV channel (130-180nm) and the other for the NUV (200-300nm) and VIS (320-550nm) channels, with a field of view of 28 $arcmin$. The FUV and the NUV detectors are operated in the high gain photon counting mode whereas the VIS detector is operated in the low gain integration mode. The FUV and NUV channels have filters and gratings, whereas the VIS channel has filters. The ASTROSAT was launched on 28th September 2015. The performance verification of UVIT was carried out after the opening of the UVIT doors on 30th November 2015, till the end of March 2016 within the allotted time of 50 days for calibration. All the on-board systems were found to be working satisfactorily. During the PV phase, the UVIT observed several calibration sources to characterise the instrument and a few objects to demonstrate the capability of the UVIT. The resolution of the UVIT was found to be about 1.4 - 1.7 $arcsec$ in the FUV and NUV. The sensitivity in various filters were calibrated using standard stars (white dwarfs), to estimate the zero-point magnitudes as well as the flux conversion factor. The gratings were also calibrated to estimate their resolution as well as effective area. The sensitivity of the filters were found to be reduced up to 15\% with respect to the ground calibrations. The sensitivity variation is monitored on a monthly basis. UVIT is all set to roll out science results with its imaging capability with good resolution and large field of view, capability to sample the UV spectral region using different filters and capability to perform variability studies in the UV.
